Also known as La Bormliża, għana fil-għoli takes its name from the city of Bormla, where it was once popular. This distinctive style of Maltese għana is characterized by its high-pitched, soaring vocal lines, demanding vocal control. While other types of għana - such as Spirtu Pront and tal-Fatt- focus on verbal dexterity and storytelling, għana fil-għoli prioritizes melodic beauty and vocal expression.
The singer’s voice weaves intricate melodic contours over the steady pulse of the guitar accompaniment, with prolonged melisma drawing the listener into the sound itself. Rather than focusing on the meaning of the words, the audience is invited to experience their emotion, texture, and musicality.
