About the event
The first event of the Strada Stretta programme for 2024, TRIBUTE TO THE ROOTS, will be held on Saturday, 24th February @ 7:45pm at 97 Notes (formerly known as The Silver Horse), at ‘the Gut’ in Strait Street, Valletta. The performance promises to be a no-nonsense Jazz extravaganza with the Carlo Muscat Paris Quartet, as they dive into the music of heavy hitters like Joe Henderson, Oliver Nelson, John Coltrane, Horace Silver, and Wayne Shorter amongst others. Featuring Carlo Muscat on saxophone, Simon Martineau on guitar, Mauro Gargano on bass, and Stefano Lucchini on drums, the group will be dishing out some classics from the 20th-century icons that have influenced the evolution of Black-American music… A veritable Tribute to the Roots.
Saxophonist and composer Carlo Muscat kicked off his musical journey at a young age in his native Malta. Growing in reputation, in 2013, he made the move to Paris, immersing himself in the city's vibrant music scene. There, Carlo absorbed diverse sounds and refined his craft by listening to and collaborating with musicians from various backgrounds. Muscat has taken the stage across Europe in cities like Paris, London, Istanbul, Milan, Berlin, Kyiv, and Rotterdam. With six albums as a leader and appearances on five others as a sideman, his musical journey, in his own words, is an endless, expressive process thriving on the freedom of interpretation and an unapologetic embrace of improvisation. Most active in Kyiv, Paris, and Malta, Carlo wears multiple hats as a performer, composer, and dedicated private tutor. Additionally, he proudly serves as the director of the live music venue 'Storeroom'. His music reflects an unwavering commitment to the craft and a steadfast pursuit of a personal musical standard.
