Back Here, With a Heavy Heart 💔

I have not written here in a while, mainly because I have been busy working on new material and dealing with the logistics of new projects that have been taking a lot of my time and energy.

I did not expect my return to this newsletter to be for this reason.

Two days ago, we lost Aurelio Belli, a legend in Maltese music, a gentleman, and someone I had the privilege of working with. His passing has affected me in a way I did not expect, and I felt I could not simply let this moment pass without saying a few words.

Aurelio was one of those rare people whose presence carried both authority and warmth. He was deeply respected in the musical world, not only for his talent and professionalism, but also for the way he treated people. He brought seriousness to the work, but never without humanity. In an industry that can sometimes be stressful and demanding, that combination is not something you forget. Many tributes this week shall remember him as a conductor, educator, and a key figure in the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as in important Maltese productions and events over the years.

For me personally, this is not just the loss of a respected musician. It is the loss of someone I knew, worked with, and admired. And that is always felt differently.

There are people in music who leave behind performances. Then there are people who leave behind a mark on the people around them. Aurelio was one of those. He will be remembered not only for what he did, but for how he did it.

My thoughts are with his family, his friends, and all those in the music community who are feeling this loss today.

Rest in peace, Aurelio. Thank you for your music, your work, your dignity, and your kindness.
