Malta Spring Festival to Host International Strings Academy in April 2025

The Malta Spring Festival is set to feature the Malta Spring Festival International Strings Academy, a week-long intensive program running from April 21 to 26, 2025. Open to string players enrolled in music institutions or universities, the Academy offers a comprehensive package including free tuition and accommodation. Participants will benefit from masterclasses, chamber music collaboration, and orchestral training led by esteemed European musicians and educators.
Each student will receive a minimum of three individual lessons and engage in carefully curated chamber ensembles featuring faculty members. Classes will be held in prestigious venues across Valletta, such as the Malta Society of Arts, the Manoel Theatre’s Nicolò Isouard Music Room, and the National Library. Afternoons will focus on rehearsals for the string orchestra, culminating in a final concert on April 26. The program includes performances of Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, Op. 110a, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade, and Arvo Pärt’s Fratres, featuring renowned soloist Dmitry Sitkovetsky.

Thea Aquilina and Giorgio Anici Camilleri Triumph at Sixth Kantamagħna Festival

The sixth edition of the Kantamagħna Festival took place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the Astra Theatre in Victoria, Gozo. The event, hosted by Keane Cutajar, showcased the talents of 30 singers divided into two categories: Kantamagħna Junior for ages 11-15 and Kantamagħna Festival for ages 16-35.
Thea Aquilina emerged as the winner of the main festival with a stunning performance of I Will Survive. Nicole Hammett and Ema claimed second and third places, respectively. Aquilina’s victory includes a one-year contract with the DCapitals Big Band, offering her the chance to perform in numerous concerts locally and abroad.
In the junior category, Giorgio Anici Camilleri won with his rendition of What a Wonderful World, followed by Aaliyah Grech in second place and Joy Xerri in third.
All finalists were accompanied by the DCapitals Big Band, an 18-piece live ensemble directed by Maestro George Apap. The festival, held with the support of the Cultural Heritage Directorate within the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, highlighted local talent and provided a platform for emerging singers.
