Alternative rock band OutBound has officially made their mark on the music scene with the release of their debut single, Nothing Comes Easy. The title is more than just a name—it’s a reflection of the band’s journey, from its spontaneous formation to its revival, and now, its long-awaited first official release.

Founded in November 2022, OutBound came to life following an impromptu gig at Valletta’s Wild Honey Bar—back when it was still nestled in Santa Lucia Street. The original line-up featured Steve Galea (guitar), Catherine Gatt (vocals), Louie Farrugia (drums), and Mikhail Farrugia (bass). Since that night, the band quickly carved out a presence on the local circuit, playing at popular venues including Exiles, La Bottega, Zion Reggae Bar, Crossroads Spinola (now closed), Front Gozo, Thirsty Barber, and the Corinthia Hotel, among others.
Drawing inspiration from iconic acts such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Arctic Monkeys, The Police, The Killers, and U2, OutBound has built a dedicated following through their vibrant performances and growing social media presence.
The band’s creative roots trace back to a humble rehearsal space—affectionately known as “Nannu Mike’s” basement in the heart of St. Julian’s. It was in this space that the band bonded over jam sessions, covers, and songwriting, including the creation of their very first original track: Nothing Comes Easy.

However, the road to their debut wasn’t without its bumps. Following a busy summer of writing and performing, the band disbanded due to internal disagreements, particularly after declining a recording opportunity in September 2024. But music has a way of pulling people back together. In February 2024, OutBound reformed with a refreshed lineup—Steve Galea, Catherine Gatt, Louie Farrugia, and new bassist Matthew Drago—ready to breathe life into their creative vision once again.
Recording resumed with producer Chris Gatt, alongside the band members themselves as co-producers. Once completed, the track was sent across the Atlantic to acclaimed mixing engineer Matt Wallace, best known for his work on Maroon 5’s Songs About Jane. Wallace praised the track for its “muscular and melodic, powerful sound.” The final touch came from Grammy Award-winning mastering engineer Dave Collins, who mastered Nothing Comes Easy, bringing the song to a world-class standard.

The single officially dropped on March 19, 2025, and is now available on all major streaming platforms. A music video has also been released on YouTube, visually capturing the spirit and perseverance behind the track.
Nothing Comes Easy is more than just a rock anthem—it’s an empowering tribute to perseverance, passion, and artistic authenticity. With bold instrumentation and an unforgettable chorus, the track encourages listeners to stay committed to their goals despite adversity. It’s a sentiment that’s sure to resonate with many navigating their own creative or personal journeys.
OutBound describes the song as “a sensational, catchy radio track that stays true to our sound while delivering a meaningful message.” The band is back in the studio working on future releases, promising more collaborations with Wallace, Collins, and producer Chris Gatt in the months to come.
