New DIY fanzine launches 20th February, continuing local punk tradition.
Malta’s punk community will celebrate the launch of Smashed to Shit: The Maltapunks Zine, a new independent publication documenting the local punk scene on February 20th at Kixott in Mosta.
The zine continues the legacy of the original Maltapunks fanzine Pissed and Fucked Up, created by local scene veterans including il-Baħri, iż-Żgħiru, Kinnie, Dr Ċiż, and others in the 1990s/early 2000s. Smashed to Shit bridges generational gaps within the local punk community by featuring both established musicians from the ‘90s era and new bands shaping the scene’s future.
Smashed to Shit is a raw, unfiltered look at Malta’s punk scene across generations. Expect candid conversations with local punk musicians and other members of the community.
Inside Issue #1
Issue #1 features unpolished interviews with punk veterans and emerging bands, exploring how the scene formed, evolved, and where it’s heading. The zine also rescues forgotten recordings from obsolete formats, and discusses what punk means in contemporary Malta. Readers will also find a lyrics section featuring songs they may have never heard of, or for some, a nostalgic reminder of the past.
Created entirely through DIY methods without digital design software or AI tools, Smashed to Shit maintains the authentic cut-and-paste aesthetic of zine culture.
Launch Event Details
The first issue will be available for purchase at the launch event on February 20th at Kixott, Mosta. Doors open at 8:00pm. The zine will be sold for €3, with limited copies available.
