The Art of Preparation: A Musician’s Journey to the Stage

Having recently performed at Mużika Mużika, the Maltese Song Festival, I was once again reminded of the intense yet deeply rewarding process that goes into preparing for a major event. Whether it’s a festival, a concert, or a special collaboration, every performance brings its own set of challenges and demands a level of preparation that goes beyond just knowing the music.
The journey to the stage starts long before the first note is played in front of an audience. It begins with countless hours of practice—refining technique, memorizing arrangements, and ensuring that every musical phrase is not just executed, but felt. As a bass player, this also means locking in with the rhythm section, adapting to different arrangements, and making sure my tone and dynamics support the overall sound of the performance.
But technical preparation is only one piece of the puzzle. Physical and mental endurance play a huge role, especially when rehearsals stretch for hours. Staying focused, maintaining energy levels, and keeping a clear mind under pressure are just as important as mastering the music itself. Many musicians, myself included, develop routines to handle the adrenaline of live performance—some rely on meditation or deep breathing exercises, while others thrive on the ritual of pre-show warm-ups.
Then, of course, there’s the live setting itself. Every venue has its own acoustics, and soundchecks are crucial in making last-minute adjustments. Whether it’s tweaking amplifier settings, adjusting in-ear monitor levels, or simply getting used to the stage layout, these final moments before a show can make all the difference.
Despite all the preparation, live performance always carries an element of unpredictability. A sudden technical issue, a last-minute change in the arrangement, or even the unexpected energy of the audience can shift the experience in real time. But that’s what makes performing so exhilarating—when everything comes together, when the hard work transforms into music that connects with people, the feeling is unmatched.
With Mużika Mużika now behind me, I’m already looking ahead to upcoming performances, each bringing new challenges and new opportunities to grow as a musician. No matter the stage, the process remains the same: practice, refine, adapt, and, most importantly, enjoy every moment of making music.
Until next time,
Simon
