A Good Night Out: Reimagining the Night-Time Economy in Malta
The Culture Directorate is organising “A Good Night Out: Reimagining the Night-Time Economy in Malta”, an event forming part of the Malta Festival of Ideas, taking place on 11 September at Hide Out, Pembroke, from 5pm onwards.
The event will bring together cultural practitioners, artists, industry stakeholders and members of the public to explore Malta’s night-time economy, its development and its potential future.

Malta boasts a prolific night-time economy, closely linked to tourism, the arts and the creative industries. Extending beyond traditional nightlife, the night-time economy encompasses business and cultural spaces operating between approximately 6pm and 4am, including bars, restaurants, concert venues, theatres, clubs, outdoor areas and other public spaces transformed for night-time activities.
While Malta’s contemporary nightlife became particularly visible during the late 1980s and early 1990s, with Paceville emerging as the island’s main entertainment hub, the night-time economy has since expanded beyond St Julian’s. Today, it continues to evolve alongside Malta’s creative industries, cultural communities and audiences.
With a vision of reimagining Malta’s night-time economy by 2030, the event will provide an opportunity to assess the current landscape while exploring how it can develop into a more sustainable, inclusive and responsive social and cultural space.
Discussions will address a range of important questions: How can good practices and protocols respond to the changing nature of Malta’s night-time economy? How can the rights of artists and creative practitioners be better represented and safeguarded? And what role do audiences and consumers play in sustaining the scenes and subcultures they are part of?
Adding an international perspective to the discussion, the event will welcome Bryony, Sarj and Felipe from the UK, who will contribute their experience and expertise while helping participants develop a set of recommendations for the future. Bryony and Sarj are part of the Good Night Out Campaign, a UK initiative working towards safer and more inclusive nightlife environments.
The event is being organised in collaboration with Oracles Productions, Tuff Drinks, Arts Council Malta and Hide-Out, as part of the wider Malta Festival of Ideas programme.
