Different Strings, led by the visionary Chris Mallia, is a progressive rock band hailing from the Maltese Islands. Known for its intricate compositions, conceptual depth, and the ability to merge progressive rock’s classic ethos with contemporary elements, the band has carved a distinct niche in the global prog-rock scene. Despite not being a mainstream commercial entity, Different Strings has consistently delivered music that resonates deeply with fans of the genre, earning international acclaim and recognition in esteemed music publications.

The genesis of Different Strings dates back to 2000, when Chris Mallia embarked on a solo project to bring his compositions to life. Driven by a passion for progressive rock icons such as Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Rush, Dream Theater, and Spock’s Beard, Mallia envisioned a project that could honour these influences while presenting a unique artistic voice. In November 2004, Different Strings debuted with the single Dead Man Walking. This marked the beginning of a journey that would see the release of multiple albums, EPs, and singles, each exploring new creative territories.
The debut album, ...It’s Only the Beginning, was released in February 2007, featuring Alan Mayo on vocals. This album was a testament to Mallia’s compositional prowess and his ability to craft intricate arrangements. The music blended symphonic elements with progressive structures, making it a compelling introduction to the band’s sound. Shortly after, in 2008, the ambitious concept album The Sounds of Silence began taking shape. Initially conceived as a double album, it was divided into two parts due to logistical and financial constraints. The first instalment was released in 2011, solidifying Different Strings' reputation as a band unafraid to tackle expansive and thought-provoking themes.

Throughout its history, Different Strings has seen numerous lineup changes, with Mallia remaining the creative anchor. Notable collaborators include Kurt Aquilina on guitar, Errol Cutajar and Alan Mayo on vocals, Julian Mallia and Karl Dingli – drums, Trevor Tabone and Johann Tabone on bass plus various other musicians who contributed to the band’s evolving sound. Aquilina, an award-winning guitarist recognized as Malta’s Young Musician, brought youthful energy and technical brilliance to the project.

The band’s discography grew with the release of the Victims of Love EP in 2010, featuring alternate versions of tracks from The Sounds of Silence and unique instrumental pieces. This release included a poignant tribute to the late artist Noel Cauchi, showcasing Mallia’s ability to imbue his music with personal and emotional depth. Over the years, the band has reissued key works, such as a re-recorded version of Dead Man Walking in 2014 and released significant albums like The Sands of Time in 2021. The latter is widely regarded as a pinnacle in the band’s career, blending conceptual storytelling with masterful musicianship and featuring an international ensemble of guest artists.
Different Strings has also made its mark in live performances. The band participated in various festivals, including Simon’s Music Fest, the Farsons Beer Festival, and Notte Bianca. In 2014, they achieved a milestone by winning the Hard Rock Rising Global Battle of the Bands and earning a top-ten placement in the international competition. Despite the challenges posed by lineup changes and logistical difficulties, live events have remained an integral part of the band’s identity.

International recognition has been a defining feature of Different Strings’ journey. The band has been featured in prominent magazines like Classic Rock – Prog, Fireworks, and Big Bang. In 2012, their track was included in a special edition distributed at the inaugural Prog Rock Music Awards in the UK, placing them alongside legendary figures such as Steve Hackett and Steven Wilson. These accolades underscore the band’s influence and its ability to connect with a global audience.

The Sands of Time released in 2021 by Progdome Records, is a concept album featuring a compelling mix of tracks that explore themes of time, struggle, and self-awareness. Notable songs include the energetic "Out of Time", the expansive title track "The Sands of Time", and the haunting "Broken Childhood". The album also includes reprises of "The Hourglass Overture" and "Out of Time" , adding a cyclical thematic layer to the project. Chris Mallia serves as the creative force behind the album, performing all instruments and providing backing vocals. Supporting the project are Andrea Casali (lead vocals), known for his work with Astra, Iced Fish, and No Gravity, and AnneMarie Spiteri (vocals on track 8), from Viper Soup Complex. Additional contributions include Kurt Aquilina (guitar solo on track 11), Jeanpierre Zammit (guitar solo on track 10), and Arthem Zhulyev (tenor saxophone solo on track 4). The diverse instrumentation and collaborative effort make The Sands of Time a standout release in progressive music.
The band’s rich discography includes albums like The Sounds of Silence – Part I & II (2008), The Sands of Time (2021), and remastered editions of earlier works. Singles such as Legacy of War (2012) and Ten Dollar Love (2021) further illustrate the diversity and depth of Different Strings’ output.
Today, Different Strings continues its evolution under the leadership of Chris Mallia. In 2024, Mallia unveiled the single Words Unspoken, showcasing his unwavering commitment to expanding the horizons of progressive rock.
Through perseverance, innovation, and a commitment to artistic integrity, Different Strings has established itself as a cornerstone of progressive rock. The band’s journey is a testament to the power of music to transcend borders and touch hearts, making it a cherished name not only in Malta but in the global prog-rock community.
