  • Nomad Son

Nomad Son < Back Formed in early 2006, doom metal band NOMAD SON brings together the creative forces of Jordan Cutajar (vocals), Chris Grech (guitar), Julian Grech (keyboards), Edward Magri (drums), all members of FRENZY MONO (one of Malta's most prolific heavy rock bands), and Albert Bell - a veteran of the Maltese metal scene and bassist of FORSAKEN (established in 1991 and now at the forefront of the European doom scene). The inception of the band owes much to Temple Studios owner and music production guru David Vella. While FRENZY MONO were recording their debut album "Unorthodox", David deciphered another, darker and meaner dimension to the band which could be nurtured to develop into a doom metal oriented project, distinct from the traditional rock edge of the guys' musical endeavours to date. One phone call away, Albert Bell responded to David Vella and FRENZY MONO's invitation to team up for a studio recorded jam, which resulted in two molten, raw, Hammond-driven, doom-laden tracks in one afternoon session! Enthused by the result of this session, the strong vibe that each of the guys felt during their jams, and moreover, mutual respect for each member's creative abilities, the guys continued to rehearse and build their repertoire in between meeting their commitments with their main bands. What had simply started as a studio jam/project - NOMAD SON - has now developed into a fully-fledged doom band with a characteristic sound influenced by BLACK SABBATH and other '70s classic bands, '80s heavy metal and milestone doom acts such as TROUBLE, PENTAGRAM, SAINT VITUS and CANDLEMASS. In the fall of 2007 NOMAD SON played live for the first time, at Doom Nite, together with FORSAKEN and UNSILENCE. In December 2007 the newly started Metal On Metal Records, upon hearing the 2 demo tracks, immediately offered NOMAD SON a deal for releasing their CD. The band's debut album "First Light" was recorded in March 2008 and released on July 19th 2008. It came like an earthquake upon the unexpecting doom fanatics worldwide, instantly gaining fantastic acclaim. A molten slab of addictive, apocalyptic, heavy doom metal with a '70s dark touch was forged in the small isle of Malta. Apart from encouraging sales worldwide, the international metal press' reaction superseded expectations, with the album described as a ground-breaking effort in doom metal circles by leading metal web and printed zines. Various tracks from the album also appeared in a number of compilations featuring metal bands worldwide, like the "Metal Crusade" vol. XVII sampler of one of the most important German metal magazines, Heavy. A limited vinyl edition of the album was released co-jointly by Metal On Metal and France's Emanes Metal records exactly one year after the CD version, in July 2009. The band embarked on a mini European tour titled "The Light of Doom" tour in the same month to commemorate the vinyl edition's release. The tour saw NOMAD SON hitting various cities throughout Germany and the Netherlands and also included an appearance at the highly-acclaimed Headbangers Open Air warm-up show in Itzehoe, Germany. This series of foreign gigs continued to consolidate the band's reputation as a solid, non-comprising live act as also evidenced by many local gigs at packed clubs, including Malta Doom Metal Assault in May 2009, at which they shared stage with FORSAKEN and DARK QUARTERER among others. NOMAD SON's unrelenting efforts since their inception were recognized at the 2009 Malta Music Awards held in November 2009 at the MFCC in Ta' Qali where the band were nominated for Best Album, Best Heavy Metal Band and Best Album Artwork. Following the second edition of the Malta Doom Metal Assault in February 2010, in April this year NOMAD SON featured at the 7th edition of the reputable Doom Shall Rise festival in Goeppingen, Germany, alongside acts like ISOLE, THE 11TH HOUR, DOOMSHINE, SEAMOUNT, MIRROR OF DECEPTION and many others. The band's performance at DSR was very positively received by those present and continued to highlight NOMAD SON's ability to mesmerize audience with their ferocious brand of heavy doom metal. In June the same year they were chosen to support PARADISE LOST at Mediterranean Metal Gathering in Malta, so a big crowd of headbangers had the chance to experience the irresistible, crushing power that NOMAD SON bring forward. Meanwhile, in April 2010, the band entered Temple Studios again and with Malta's sound engineering guru David Vella at the helm, recorded the second and much awaited album "The Eternal Return". Their sophomore effort saw the light of day on July 16th 2010 and brought dark, Hammond-driven, ominous heavy doom metal tinged with epic and obscure soundscapes - the perfect tapestry for the band's take on the spiritual, social and moral decay afflicting humankind in today's unrepentant world. NOMAD SON won the Best Heavy Metal Band and Best International Achievement awards at the Malta Music Awards in November 2010. Other 2010 achievements worth mentioning are: "The Eternal Return" being voted the Best Doom Metal Album of 2010 (with 246 votes out of 559 voters) on Delaware's SilenceSoLoud.com website and Album of the Year on Vampster.com (Germany) by doom master Frank Helweg (Doom Shall Rise Festival). After "The Eternal Return" CD release more NOMAD SON live performances followed: several gigs in Malta (including the annual Malta Doom Metal festival), headlining show at Pax Julia Metal Fest II in Portugal in October 2010 (together with DAWNRIDER, WILD and PRAYERS OF SANITY) and in February 2011 a 3-days headlining UK tour with MORTALICUM, THE PROPHECY and IRON VOID, including Doomsday IV festival in Wakefield, together with IRON HEARSE, ARKHAM WITCH, just to mention the more important names. On October 29th 2011 NOMAD SON got to play at the second most important and biggest doom festival (besides Doom Shall Rise): Hammer of Doom in Wuerzburg, Germany. They shared the stage with MANILLA ROAD, FORSAKEN, DOOMSWORD, THE 11TH HOUR, LORD VICAR, ORCHID, BATTLEROAR, YET SO FAR, BLOOD CEREMONY and several other bands. One week later NOMAD SON played at the Malta Doom Metal festival, together with PAGAN ALTAR, FORSAKEN, ARKHAM WITCH, OFFICIUM TRISTE, MIRROR OF DECEPTION, TEMPLE OF PAIN, FOCUS INDULGENS, VICTIMS OF CREATION, VOID MOON, MOUNTAIN THRONE, FANGTOOTH and GRIFFIN DEVICE. Coinciding with the band's appearance at the much feted Hammer of Doom festival in Germany, on October 28th 2011, "The Eternal Return" was released co-jointly by Metal On Metal and Emanes Metal on vinyl, as gatefold LP. Following the successful gigs abroad and in their own country, in the fall of 2012 NOMAD SON started recording their 3rd opus "The Darkening". During the following months the band focused on the studio work, making a break for only one show: in March they went to Switzerland to play at the 10th edition of Elements of Rock festival. The new album was completed in May 2013 and, like their two previous albums, mixed, mastered and produced by David Vella at Temple Studios. "The Darkening" sees the band upping the dose of high-octane traditional doom metal mixed with '70s hard rock, NWOBHM and '80s classic heavy metal and was released on August 30th 2013. NOMAD SON's triumphant march continues... On the same day Metal On Metal Records re-released the band's sold-out debut "First Light", however not alone, but on DVDplus format together with "Pilgrimages of Doom" DVD. Get ready for a true doom metal feast with over 2 hours of exclusive material showing the band on 4 stages between 2009 and 2011... enter the domain of NOMAD SON's world of apocalyptic, heavy doom! • Leo Stivala, Vocals

< Back Leo Stivala Vocals unknown Leo Stivala, a true head banger, highly influenced by old school traditional heavy metal and pure traditional epic heavy doom. In the mid-late eighties he decided to start learning guitar and formed a band called North Winds which lasted only for a year. A few months later Leo attempted bass guitar duties in another band, very Mercyful Fate/King Diamond influenced, tentatively called Nightfall but ended too soon. In 1989 he was approached by Kevin Azzopardi to try to sing in his new band called Blind Alley. Leo took a try and things seemed to work out. History goes that Blind Alley went through some member changes in the early days and after the inclusion of Albert Bell on bass guitar the band’s moniker changed to Forsaken. Leo kept the vocal duties in Forsaken but also contributed musically and lyrically every now and then. As years passed Forsaken grew stronger as an outfit and so did Leo vocally and as a front man, gaining experience in studio and in gigs locally and abroad with Forsaken. In 2006 Leo was approached by the Greek Epic Metal band Reflection to be the vocalist for the band. Leo’s first gig with Reflection was as support to the mighty Solitude Aeturnus which was an instant success. Leo’s adventures in Greece continued with other gigs and also recording vocals for Reflection’s third full length album called “When Shadows Fall” released in 2008 by Cruz del Sur redords. Unfortunately in 2012 Leo had to amicably leave from Reflection but still continued with his vocals responsibilities in Forsaken. Leo has also contributed and guested vocals in various releases from bands namely Lucid Dreaming (Germany), Martyrium (Malta), Arkham Witch (UK) and Vestal Claret (USA), Monasterium (Poland), Void Moon (Sweden), Draugul (Sweden), The Cross (Brasil) Leo now also sings with a new Epic Doom band called Anchorite, a band formed by himself and Void Moon bassist Peter Svensson. Anchorite released their debut album “Further From Eternity” on GMR Records in November 2020 and are penning new songs for a follow up album Discography Date Title Type Listen Member of : Follow the artist

  • Issac Azzopardi, Guitarist | Singer

< Back Issac Azzopardi Guitarist | Singer Isaac’s journey with the guitar began at the age of five, inspired by playing his father’s classical guitar at home. Despite struggling to find a teacher at such a young age, he eventually started classical guitar lessons at six under Evan Plumpton and later also started learning electric guitar at eight with Marc Galea. His first public performance came at the age of seven. More recently, he began vocal training last summer, aiming to refine his voice to a professional level for the band. Isaac is currently working towards his classical DipLCM Diploma and electric guitar ALCM Diploma while also preparing for his Music A-Level this summer. His musical influences span jazz, rock, blues, and funk, and he draws inspiration from guitar legends such as Slash, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Matteo Mancuso and a lot of others. Within RELOAD MT, Isaac enjoys writing original music, trying out new covers, and performing live. Reflecting on the band’s journey, he notes how their second gig attracted a larger and more engaged crowd, while their performances at Wild Honey Valletta marked a significant milestone as their first paid gigs. Isaac notes how their performance at 97 NOTES' Music Wars competition helped boost the bands confidence since the crowd were cheering for the band throughout all of their songs. He also enjoyed speaking with the other bands (The Glades and Memphis Mac) since they had the same music taste. Isaac also finds their 3rd gig at Muddy Waters fun and enjoyable, being their first 2 hour set. Looking ahead, he hopes to help the band grow, secure larger gigs, and expand their original music catalog, which currently includes two completed songs. He also wishes to produce more content for their social media page. Isaac is particularly excited for their new gigs including playing in Earth Garden 25' which could help boost their popularity and meet other bands. • X-Vandals

X-Vandals facebook.com < Back The early 1980's were dominated by political tension throughout Europe and Malta was no exception. Towns and villages had gangs of teens ready to destabilize society and in Tarxien, something was coming to a boil with young metalheads disturbing the peace at 'The Bandli’ and running havoc in the narrow streets of this quiet village. A group of teens including 5 musicians tried to form a band!! Ray Micallef (Hamiemu) assumed the responsibility to form the army, Ray Schembri (Il-Bahri) came with the name, VANDALS. Mysterious circumstances occurred simultaneously to forge the name that would become every mother's nightmare. Mark Crusher joined the band in the beginning of 1984 and soon the band started writing material and played 2 gigs in Tarxien, of which one ended with the police arresting Il-Bahri concerning some violent accidents which occurred a week before. In 1985 the band played the Malta Sajf Festival and the Maltese music scene was shocked by the fast speed metal riffs the Vandals introduced to a generally laid-back audience relaxing with drink and pot. The Vandals were loud and fast, and the band started, after some months gaining, momentum by gigging frequently. Soon they had a big following and the concerts were selling during which the crowd started the first slam diving from the stage. This reputation solidified the band's participation in the much-awaited Malta Sajf festival for years, while playing gigs around the island. During that time, the band recorded some tapes, which were only distributed amongst friends. Mark left the band in 1989 and moved to the UK which although a major setback, the band managed to eventually find replacements in Albert Bell on bass and Rusty on vocals. The band also recruited Mark's brother Al Crusher to join for a heavier sound. With this line up the band started to write new material and prepared a set up for a number of shows titled BACK THROUGH THE AGES with Barbarian style of clothing, backdrops and a heavier Thrash Metal style. At this time someone brought up the idea of a Thrash Metal Live Opera and BEDROCK 1991-2091 was conceived, a fiction story of Modern Federal Europe dominated by wars and conflicts in which the band played 6 new songs. The cast was made from other bands musicians and people from the Vandals’ concerts crowd. During those years, the band released a video titled 'Crusading Sinners', and a demo tape called 'The Rise of Evil', which they tape traded in many countries around the world. Soon after Albert, Rusty and Aldo left the band to start other projects, while Josem on vocals, James on bass and Jason on guitar were recruited and the band moved into a more Thrash/Death Metal style. With this line up the band played 2 gigs in Torri Tigne, a venue they weren't allowed to play before, because of a policy made by the AST organisation. Around 1994 the band went on a hiatus. Ray Micallef, Ray Schembri and James Spiteri continued to gig with Abstrass, a band formed by Erich Azzopardi in the 80's. Micallef also played in Lord Adder together with ex Vandals Mark Crusher, who moved back from the UK and his brother Al. Schembri started the anarcho punk band SUBCULTURE and RAGE AGAINST SOCIETY + many other punk bands! During an ABSTRASS band practice, Rusty paid a visit and came up with the idea of a Vandals revamp, to which the band agreed after some more meetings and beer. In 2003 the band changed the name to X-VANDALS and work on what was the band's full-length debut album 'Erosion Of Our Liberties' commenced. The album was influenced by Thrash/HC Punk both lyrically and musically and the band played gigs and festivals frequently. A couple of years later the band recorded the second album 'Breach The Silence', which was released on 13th June 2009. At this stage the band decided to add another guitarist for a more heavier sound, and the choice fell on Mark Azzopardi (ex-Martyrium). With Mark the band flirted with a darker music style and laid the foundations for the next album titled 'Exhume The Truth', which was released in 2016, when Mark had already left the band and went to live in Sweden. 2018 was the band's 35th anniversary. DJ Noel Mifsud (ONE Radio/allRock Radio insisted that a celebration is a must! Ray Micallef came up with the idea to ask Albert Bell (ex Vandals bassist) to join and play on some tracks from the 1990's catalogue as a guest. Their first practice was exciting and felt as if it was 1990 again. During this celebration Mark Crusher and Aldo joined the band for a set from the 1980's catalogue, while the other guests were drummer Karen 'Grinder' (Delirium), daughter of Ray Micallef and a performance by Kyle and Nick Spiteri, sons of X-Vandals bassist James. During the night the band released their 4th album a compilation titled, 35 Years Of Metal 1983-2018, and the 35th anniversary t-shirts to mark the date. This night could not have happened without the help and support of the band's friend Mark Manicolo from Team Jalen kickboxing club. Organisation was up to REJECTS.COM , who organised a night which will forever be annexed in the story of Maltese metal history. It was a milestone for the band and on Ray Micallef's idea, the band asked Albert Bell to join the band permanently as their guitarist, marking the beginning of a new chapter, with the band immersed into writing new music and playing live around the island. Two appearances at the Farsons Beer Festival led to the release of the DVD 'Who We Are', in 2018 with the support and patience of Alan Zammit, one of the band's videographers. During the Covid-19 period, apathy was haunting X-Vandals, but with the perseverance of Ray Micallef, the band came out of that period with determination to start working steadily on the next album. 2023 marks the band's 40th anniversary and the release of the 5th X-Vandals album. < Back Nigel 'Noogie' Buttigieg Vocals, Guitars Nigel grew up around music. Following his dad and fellow band member, Charles Buttigieg around, during his rehearsals with his old bands, taking him to gigs and telling him stories of how Malta was rich in live music during the eighties, a scene which was dominated by rock, punk, metal and new romantics. Listening to these stories Nigel strongly believes that he was born in the wrong era. And agrees that he really got into music when his dad put on Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid' on their old stereo. His father says that after his son heard that song, no one could stop him from singing. He was 10. Then he heard Iron Maiden's 'Number of the Beast' and at that time the thing that impressed him the most wasn't Bruce Dickinson's vocals, (which by the way he was, still is and will always will be the best vocalist that ever lived in his opinion) it was Maiden's musicianship and the chemistry together, and that's when he decided to start playing an instrument. He started off by learning and playing the drums, but after 4 years Nigel realised, he wanted something more up front facing the crowds, so he switched to guitar and had been hooked ever since.
