- Albert Bell's Sacro Sanctus
Albert Bell's Sacro Sanctus Alexia Baldacchino < Back Sometime in 2011 Albert started working on the music for his solo project, later named ALBERT BELL'S SACRO SANCTUS. By autumn of 2012 he was able to present 2 demo songs to Metal On Metal Records with whom he'd been co-operating because of NOMAD SON . It wasn't what most would expect from the veteran of the doom scene... it was more of a return to the roots when it comes to his influences and musical career. And it was also the first time Albert's vocals were to be heard on a recording. This darker and much more "evil" sounding side of Albert's musical expression appealed right away to the label and the sides agreed to work with each other again. The debut album, "Deus Volt" was recorded during 2013 and 2014 at Chris Grech's (NOMAD SON guitarist) studio as well as at the renowned Temple Studios with sound engineering and music production guru David Vella. Albert handles most of the instrumentation on the album (vocals, lead and rhythm guitars, and bass of course) with Robert Spiteri - Malta's drumming prodigy from hard rockers FIRE recruited on drums to masterful effect. ALBERT BELL'S SACRO SANCTUS is the next step in Albert's heavy metal trajectory, where his song-writing, lyrical talents and musicianship all come to the fore. "Deus Volt" - Albert's debut solo album captures and pays tribute to the myriad influences that have inspired him to date - from the formative influences of BLACK SABBATH, JUDAS PRIEST, MOTORHEAD, VENOM and CELTIC FROST to Bell's passion and love for classic doom metal as epitomised by NEMESIS, CANDLEMASS, TROUBLE and SAINT VITUS. On "Deus Volt" one can also trace nods to epic metal and the dark, arcane soundscapes typical of the Italian and Hellenic metal scenes that Bell has always felt strong affinity to, reflective of the influences of Mediterranean culture on the music and thematic concepts that he has and continues to explore in his musical forays. Lyrically, "Deus Volt" sees Albert drawing on both myth and historical fact. It centres on a fictional tale that charts the conjuring and embracing of arcane forces by the higher echelons of the Fatimid dynasty in the midst of efforts of rival caliphates to oust their supremacy. As Fatimid power is ascertained, a bolder challenge arises in the form of successive crusader incursions, spearheaded by the rise of the Knights Templar and other Christian military orders, including the Knights of Outremer and the Knights Hospitalier (Knights of St.John). As their banners rise and battle-cries holler in the East, Christianity's ever-increasing military and political power and expansive ambitions resonate across uncharted territory. Blood is spilled across the battlefields of Hattin and Ascalon as these opposites clash! Drawing upon myth, belief, superstition, courage and the search for glory; both sides vie for ultimate supremacy under the panoptical gaze of the Monolith - the all-encompassing God! Deus Volt! (God Wills It!) ALBERT BELL'S SACRO SANCTUS debut album was released on November 14th, 2014 through Metal on Metal Records. It brings savage epic blackened doom metal that you can raise your fist and headbang to! Primeval metal intended for the discerning and elite old-schoolers! Albert started working on his sophomore album still long before the debut was out. For the second SACRO SANCTUS album "Ad Aeternum", Albert uses the same musical and song-writing formula explored on "Deus Volt", though perhaps now somewhat more refined with his increasing studio experience as a solo artist. This said, Albert's approach remains steadfast and resolute in its commitment, dedication and celebration of old school metal, without any compromises whatsoever. Lyrically, "Ad Aeternum" revisits Templar history, combining fact, myth and fiction once more. After the Templars' rise to supremacy over the Saracen hordes, the Knights Templar continue on their primary quest in the Holy Land - to unravel the secrets of the Temple of Solomon. On this journey, the Knights Templar encounter, among other things, ancient Hermetic texts that spoke of a monolithic, all-encompassing God well before the origins and rise of Christendom. The Knights' interactions with Fatimid and Saracen traditions and lore also made them privy to other forces of esoteric and arcane knowledge, including the rudiments of ancient Sumerian/Babylonian magick. Armed with such arcana imperii, the Templars become even more invincible and a growing threat to the Papacy and theological orthodoxy - the very foundations of the Christian world are thus threatened. Steps are taken by the Papacy, cajoled by the French Monarchy (one of the principle power brokers at the time) to crush the Templars and destroy their influence throughout Europe. A brutal Templar inquisition is undertaken (this is where the album draws on historical fact) with the Order facing charges of witchcraft, demonology, devil worship and so forth. All this is documented on the track titled "Hex and Heresy". As referenced in the mid-section of the track, while the last Templar Grand Master de Molay is being burned at the stake, he and his associates curse their persecutors (Pope Clement and King Philip of France) who eventually die within a year of de Molay's torture and burning. Following the proclamations made by their Grand Master while burning at the pyre, the surviving Templars invoke dark Sumerian demi-gods and deities and unleash the foulest of deaths on their foes (as documented on both "Seal of Damnation" and "Invocations of Unlight"). Despite their persecution, many Templars survived and continued to wield untold power worldwide till this very day (hence the last track "Illuminati (Will to Power)" on the album - and the title track "Ad Aeternum"). "Ad Aeternum" was again recorded at Chris Grech's studio, between July 2014 and August 2015, while drums were recorded by Robert Spiteri at the Temple Studios of David Vella, who contributed some keyboards and who again co-produced, mixed and mastered the album. Sparing no quarter, this gauntlet-clad fist in the face of all hipster pretenders and new metal trenders was released on April 29th, 2016 through Metal on Metal Records. Albert continued following up his forays into Templar history and myth with a third album (the final instalment in Sacro Sanctus' Knights Templar trilogy), which delved into the Templars' diaspora after their coerced disbanding and their links with contemporary esotericism and various secret societies. Titled "Liber III: Codex Templarum", the album focuses on the Order of 13's fate following their coerced dissolution including their alleged involvement in insurrections against despotic rule in Scotland and the Alpine lands in the 14th century. Templar myth and fiction are combined to masterful effect once more as our erstwhile protagonist unleashes riff upon riff of untainted and feral old school, blackened heavy metal forged from a cauldron of pedigree influences from Celtic Frost to Trouble, to Motorhead, Bathory and Venom. With "Liber III: Codex Templarum", Sacro Sanctus continues to successfully tread along the true footprint of the genre with all its best ingredients meshed in a chalice of metalized blood that should satiate the thirst of elite metal aficionados. We find some changes in band personnel on "Liber III" - Steve Lombardo (well known in Malta for his pounding and malevolent drumming with local punk legends B NI plus his studio work with myriad Maltese bands) now joined on drums and Owen Grech (one the island's most talented shredders) on lead guitar. Owen (KILLERWITCH, ex-12TH ODE, MALTA DIO DISCIPLES) handles most of the guitar solo work on the album after being enrolled together with Steve and organ player Luciano Schembri on Sacro Sanctus cover of "The Shrine in the Gloom" - which featured in “Terror Tales” - a Death SS tribute released by Black Widow Records in 2018. Albert retained vocal, bass and all the rest of guitar duties together with his now tried and tested song writing and composition skills. All the pre-production work was completed between November 2017 and January 2018 at Steve Lombardo's Hell Next Door Studios (Gudja, Malta) while the album was mixed and mastered once more by Albert's erstwhile collaborator David Vella at Temple Studios, Mistra Bay, Malta. "Liber III: Codex Templarum" was released on September 5th, 2018 by Metal on Metal Records. Raw and primal as you can get, Bell sounded the clarion of battle once more with his third declaration of war! With his Templars trilogy now complete, Albert went about the task of forging a new exciting concept for his fourth album. “Sword of Fierbois” is the fruit of this intense labour, charting circa 700 years of European history, from 732 AD to the 1430s. With his penchant for story-telling very evident once more, Albert explores how the fate of myriad chief protagonists of the Middle Ages, including most notably, Charles ‘The Hammer’ Martel, Charlemagne and Joan of Arc, was intimately tied to the possession of the allegedly miraculous and mythical blade – the Sword of Fierbois. Throughout the process we meet several other important historical personages, from the Umayyad Caliphate Commander Abdul Rahman, Henry V, the Daughin of France (Charles VII) and the Cardinal of Winchester, Henry Beaufort. Milestone battlescapes, including the Battle of Tours (732 AD), the Battle of Agincourt (1415) and the Siege of Orleans (1428-9), are also visited and retold in all their ferocious glory. Recorded during the height of the Covid pandemic late 2021 at Steve Lombardo’s Hell Next Door Studios and mixed by Grammy Award winner Marcus Jidell (AVATARIUM, THE DOOMSDAY KINGDOM, CANDLEMASS, etc.), the album features 11 blistering, no-holds-barred and merciless tracks of crushing old school metal. Steve Lombardo retains his position behind the drum stool for this album. Various and much-esteemed guests from both Maltese shores and beyond also join Albert (vox, bass and guitars) in animating his vision for “Sword of Fierbois”, including the likes of Mantas (VENOM.INC), Alan Jones (PAGAN ALTAR), JOHN GALLO (ORODRUIN), and the afore-mentioned Marcus Jidell. The album is mastered by CJ Grimmark from Lighthouse Mastering (Norway) and was released through Metal on Metal Records once more on September, 30th, 2022.September 30th, 2022. - Alex Carachi, Vocals
< Back Alex Carachi Vocals Alexia Baldacchino A medical doctor by profession, Alex’s lyrics are influenced by his interest in poetry, literature and history, most prominently eighteenth century UK poets such as Alfred Lord Tennyson, Rudyard Kipling, and William Wordsworth, as well as nineteenth century Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. In his own words, “lyrics, like life are poetry, and in their sorrow we find the end so that anew we can gain life”. Lyrics throughout the songs touch upon themes of betrayal (as in the track Yudah), war, and the frailty of mankind in a world that is concerned more with imagery and corruption rather than the individual himself. The emotional charge in his singing strongly reflects the intensity of the lyrics whilst also imbuing the songs with a creative element at the appropriate moments. The stylistic trait comes mostly to life along his occasional use of the ancient Italic language of Latin as well as verses that come with direct poetic and literary references. - Decline the Fall
Decline the Fall < Back Hailing from Malta, a relentless work ethic and strength of will has propelled metal band Decline The Fall into a string of successes since forming back in 2015. In 2017, the five-piece band proved they are a force to be reckoned with, playing alongside genre legends like Mayhem, Rotting Christ and most notably, Lacuna Coil. This was followed by their first invite in 2019 to perform at the well-known Hills of Rock festival in Plovdiv, Bulgaria with over 50,000 attendees. The release of their debut album ‘Our Own Demise’ has been received with praise, both locally and internationally. Such was also the case with the release of their first single, ‘Nemesis’ – a gut-punching, melodic track which has amassed thousands of views on YouTube alone. 2020 saw the bandmates relocate to Slovenia, where they currently reside. This move brought about a change in the line-up. As the world sat in silence in the wake of a global pandemic, the bandmates put their heads down and started working on material for their second full-length album. With plenty of gigs and festivals in the pipeline, Decline The Fall are currently gearing up for a return to the live music scene and to explode onto the metal world with their compelling and refreshing music. Their electric live performances have thus far left international crowds hungry for more. This is just the beginning. - Paul Formosa, Drums
< Back Paul Formosa Drums Modern Tribe Photography Paul Formosa is a drummer originating from the island of Gozo, who has been active in the local underground scene since 2012. He picked up the drumsticks at the age of 16 after being enchanted by the performance of Metallica’s Lars Ulrich in their San Diego gig in 1992, on the DVD ‘Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge’. Ascendor: (2012 – present) Paul was the founder of the Gozitan Metal band Ascendor. Guitarists Andy Fava and Joe Costa, bassist Blasio Muscat and vocalist Steve Muscat completed the line-up and performed several gigs across both islands. They had the honour of sharing the stage with massive bands such as Angel Witch and Evil Invaders as well as making it to the finals of the Hard Rock Rising Battle of the bands in 2013. Between 2012 and 2018, Ascendor released three studio albums; ‘Becoming’, ‘Drive my Demons Away’ and ‘Disturb the Dust’, all of which were heavily influenced by thrash metal. They released their most recent record ‘Circle of Violence’ in 2020 and the latter is considered as a pure old school thrash metal album from start to end. Upper Lip: (2018 - 2019) In the summer of 2018, Upper Lip’s founding member, lead guitarist Joseph Azzopardi asked Paul to temporarily fill in as the band’s drummer until they find a permanent replacement. During his time with the Gozitan rock band, Paul played numerous gigs as well as recording six of the ten tracks on Upper Lip’s debut album ‘Deep Within’. Angelcrypt: (2018 - 2019) Paul occupied the drum stool of local Melodeath titans Angelcrypt in 2018 and during the following year, he played at the annual editions of ‘Metal Over Malta’ and ‘Metal United Worldwide’ as well as touring with the band in Croatia, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Germany. The pinnacle of this experience was when Paul got the opportunity to contribute to and record the drums for Angelcrypt’s album ‘Dawn of the Emperor’. Paul had to reluctantly part ways with Angelcrypt solely due to the hectic and demanding nature of their touring schedule. Sonic Storm: (2020 - present) While working on Ascendor’s 2020 release ‘Circle of Violence’, Paul was asked to join Karl Friggieri and Francesco Degabriele in Sonic Storm. He has played a number of gigs with Sonic Storm while contemporarily working on the release of their debut album ‘Keys to Your Ruin’, which should be released in 2023. Zabbeth: (Session) In 2022 Sean Attard (Chaos) produced and released a Bathory worship album called ‘Zabbeth’ and asked Paul to contribute his drumming to the record. - Weeping Silence
Weeping Silence < Back Weeping Silence is a Melodic Metal band with Death and Progressive Metal influences based in Malta. The band has evolved steadily since its formation in 1998 and has since released four albums with record labels, the latest one being through Massacre Records (DE). Originally established in the late 90’s as a Gothic Metal act, Weeping Silence started its journey with its first milestone being the release of “End of an Era” in 2008. After a series of lineup changes, the band morphed into the Female-Fronted, Gothic Metal band it was mostly known for. In 2011, Weeping Silence released its second album ‘Theatre of Life’ that was characterised by mid-pace gothic elements and grandiose orchestrations. The track ‘Dark Waters’ off this album was voted first in the EKR A-List People’s Choice Poll. After the release of this album, the band decided to open the door for international festivals and tours, and opportunities started presenting themselves immediately. Weeping Silence entered the studio again to record ‘For the Unsung’. Released in deluxe digipack edition in 2012 by Ravenheart Rec (UK), it features male backing vocals for the first time, and marked a step towards a more pronounced Doom Metal element in the band. Within this more aggressive, gothic-doom framework, Anders Jacobsson of renowned Swedish act Draconian featured as guest vocalist. Towards the end of 2012, Weeping Silence made a change in the vocal line-up. Diane Camenzuli & Dario Pace Taliana joined ranks and a year later the band was nominated for the ‘Best Heavy Metal Band’ award in the National Malta Music Awards (MMAs), and won the ‘Best Band of the Year 2012’ in the Female Metal Webzine awards. The fourth album ‘Opus IV Oblivion‘, released with heavy-weights Massacre Records (DE), was a Gothic Doom Metal album that brought together the best that Weeping Silence had to offer: Heavy, melodic, dark and full of ambience with doom-laden riffs. This album was listed in Top 20 Best-of Album lists of 2015 in several webzines & Top-10 Awards in Metal Storm, with an array of great reviews & press-clips in magazines such as Metal Hammer, Legacy & Orkus. 2018 was a pivotal year for Weeping Silence that saw a significant member and style reshuffle of the band. Founding member and guitarist Mario Ellul, vocalist Dario Pace Taliana and keyboardist Alison Ellul decided to continue with Weeping Silence and look for new members. Drummer Julian ‘Julinu’ Mallia, guitarist Glenn Paul Pace, and eventually bassist Manuel Spiteri brought in new influences that markedly developed the band’s creative direction. The eclectic mix of old and new members led Weeping Silence to evolve into the male-fronted, melodic metal (with death and prog metal influences) band that it is now. The current album, due to be released in 2023, is a solid manifestation of the band’s artistic statement and is intended to propel the band into a promising creative path. - X-Vandals
X-Vandals facebook.com < Back The early 1980's were dominated by political tension throughout Europe and Malta was no exception. Towns and villages had gangs of teens ready to destabilize society and in Tarxien, something was coming to a boil with young metalheads disturbing the peace at 'The Bandli’ and running havoc in the narrow streets of this quiet village. A group of teens including 5 musicians tried to form a band!! Ray Micallef (Hamiemu) assumed the responsibility to form the army, Ray Schembri (Il-Bahri) came with the name, VANDALS. Mysterious circumstances occurred simultaneously to forge the name that would become every mother's nightmare. Mark Crusher joined the band in the beginning of 1984 and soon the band started writing material and played 2 gigs in Tarxien, of which one ended with the police arresting Il-Bahri concerning some violent accidents which occurred a week before. In 1985 the band played the Malta Sajf Festival and the Maltese music scene was shocked by the fast speed metal riffs the Vandals introduced to a generally laid-back audience relaxing with drink and pot. The Vandals were loud and fast, and the band started, after some months gaining, momentum by gigging frequently. Soon they had a big following and the concerts were selling during which the crowd started the first slam diving from the stage. This reputation solidified the band's participation in the much-awaited Malta Sajf festival for years, while playing gigs around the island. During that time, the band recorded some tapes, which were only distributed amongst friends. Mark left the band in 1989 and moved to the UK which although a major setback, the band managed to eventually find replacements in Albert Bell on bass and Rusty on vocals. The band also recruited Mark's brother Al Crusher to join for a heavier sound. With this line up the band started to write new material and prepared a set up for a number of shows titled BACK THROUGH THE AGES with Barbarian style of clothing, backdrops and a heavier Thrash Metal style. At this time someone brought up the idea of a Thrash Metal Live Opera and BEDROCK 1991-2091 was conceived, a fiction story of Modern Federal Europe dominated by wars and conflicts in which the band played 6 new songs. The cast was made from other bands musicians and people from the Vandals’ concerts crowd. During those years, the band released a video titled 'Crusading Sinners', and a demo tape called 'The Rise of Evil', which they tape traded in many countries around the world. Soon after Albert, Rusty and Aldo left the band to start other projects, while Josem on vocals, James on bass and Jason on guitar were recruited and the band moved into a more Thrash/Death Metal style. With this line up the band played 2 gigs in Torri Tigne, a venue they weren't allowed to play before, because of a policy made by the AST organisation. Around 1994 the band went on a hiatus. Ray Micallef, Ray Schembri and James Spiteri continued to gig with Abstrass, a band formed by Erich Azzopardi in the 80's. Micallef also played in Lord Adder together with ex Vandals Mark Crusher, who moved back from the UK and his brother Al. Schembri started the anarcho punk band SUBCULTURE and RAGE AGAINST SOCIETY + many other punk bands! During an ABSTRASS band practice, Rusty paid a visit and came up with the idea of a Vandals revamp, to which the band agreed after some more meetings and beer. In 2003 the band changed the name to X-VANDALS and work on what was the band's full-length debut album 'Erosion Of Our Liberties' commenced. The album was influenced by Thrash/HC Punk both lyrically and musically and the band played gigs and festivals frequently. A couple of years later the band recorded the second album 'Breach The Silence', which was released on 13th June 2009. At this stage the band decided to add another guitarist for a more heavier sound, and the choice fell on Mark Azzopardi (ex-Martyrium). With Mark the band flirted with a darker music style and laid the foundations for the next album titled 'Exhume The Truth', which was released in 2016, when Mark had already left the band and went to live in Sweden. 2018 was the band's 35th anniversary. DJ Noel Mifsud (ONE Radio/allRock Radio insisted that a celebration is a must! Ray Micallef came up with the idea to ask Albert Bell (ex Vandals bassist) to join and play on some tracks from the 1990's catalogue as a guest. Their first practice was exciting and felt as if it was 1990 again. During this celebration Mark Crusher and Aldo joined the band for a set from the 1980's catalogue, while the other guests were drummer Karen 'Grinder' (Delirium), daughter of Ray Micallef and a performance by Kyle and Nick Spiteri, sons of X-Vandals bassist James. During the night the band released their 4th album a compilation titled, 35 Years Of Metal 1983-2018, and the 35th anniversary t-shirts to mark the date. This night could not have happened without the help and support of the band's friend Mark Manicolo from Team Jalen kickboxing club. Organisation was up to REJECTS.COM , who organised a night which will forever be annexed in the story of Maltese metal history. It was a milestone for the band and on Ray Micallef's idea, the band asked Albert Bell to join the band permanently as their guitarist, marking the beginning of a new chapter, with the band immersed into writing new music and playing live around the island. Two appearances at the Farsons Beer Festival led to the release of the DVD 'Who We Are', in 2018 with the support and patience of Alan Zammit, one of the band's videographers. During the Covid-19 period, apathy was haunting X-Vandals, but with the perseverance of Ray Micallef, the band came out of that period with determination to start working steadily on the next album. 2023 marks the band's 40th anniversary and the release of the 5th X-Vandals album.
