- Thrashacre
Thrashacre < Back Thrashacre started at as two piece beginning with James Horton and Spike Refalo. The two being school friends at the time and sharing a love for the same music tastes, decided to take it to the next level and start playing instruments respectively. With a guitarist and drummer sorted the two started to recruit other musicians. The next in line was bassist Francesco 'Cikku' Frendo joining the fold. After sometime with this line-up the band was excited to audition a guitarist they had their eyes set upon for a while. This guitarist would be Noel Ellul. A perfect match up for the band's sound. Armed with the instrumentalists, the band started seeking a vocalist to finalize their line-up. After a couple of vocalists the band settled with Ryan Farrugia. The band had now finalized it's line-up in 2006. This is where the band started song writing and crafting their music. The band was always heavily influenced by the Bay Area Thrash Metal scene that was prominent in the 1980's. Between 2006-2009 the band had already summoned up two album's worth of material. This was time for the band to go live. Thrashacre was actively performing their music between the years 2009-2013 building a reputation in the local scene. It was from 2013 that the band hibernated until the year 2019 when the band re-joined without fellow guitarist Noel Ellul. Thrashacre continued to accept gigs and one of them being a gig supporting Irish thrash metallers Gama Bomb. The aim for the band was clear from this moment that they will record some of the songs made between 2006-2009 as the opportunity was lost during the active years of the band. The year 2019 saw the band ready to record for the first time and 'Live & Let Thrash' was born. Thrashacre released their album in 2021 and are proud to have finally put out some of their material into physical form. The band is currently on hiatus mode until further notice. - TACT
TACT < Back Formed in November 2009 by bandleader Franco Tartaglia, Tact (Tartaglia's Act) has a tune for every mood and a soundtrack for every season. Operating within the realm of introspective music, Tact's fusion of influences ranges from Classical, Jazz, Rock and Soundtrack music. Starting as compositions by Tartaglia, Tact's music takes shape into fully-fledged arrangements as the rest of the band add and lay down their hues, embellishments and creativity. Also, Tact's repertoire now includes other member's compositions. As a classical guitarist and a performer since a very young age, Tartaglia was never much interested in mainstream music. His first interests, apart from the classical guitar were musicians of notable stature who “strived to show the artistic aspect at the heart of music.” Rock and a newly found love for the electric guitar brought with it an interest in other genres such as blues, funk, fusion and eventually jazz fusion. Tact is also composed of another three members. On bass guitars is Charles Cassar, an electric bass guitar player influenced by funk, jazz and rock music also being the founder and band leader of local band Djun. On piano and vocals is Paul Torpiano, a classically-trained jazz pianist with a love of many contemporary styles, allowing him to bring a unique playing approach to Tact, also being the keyboardist with Djun and leading his solo project PT etc. Rounding off Tact is drummer and percussionist Carl Matthew Camilleri, a regular performer with the big band Versatile Brass and on productions by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Tact released its first album 'Brushworks' in 2015 launched at Robert Samut Hall Floriana supported by Arts Council Malta recorded at Lito's Place. In 2017 Tact released a music video for the track 'All Is True' from the Album 'Brushworks'. The launch was at the Splendid Hotel in Valletta. In 2019 Tact recorded three compositions at the Church of St Ubaldeska in Paola which were released as three music videos collaborating with 'Late Interactive' for light design, Francesco Debeno as videographer, Sergio Costa as recording engineer and Temple Studios for mixing and mastering. In 2018 Tact was a supporting act at the V18 events opening for guitarist Carlos Bojarski held at the Bacchus in Mdina. In 2019 Tact put up a performance together with Andre Mangon and Marceline Galea as literature contributors alongside music by Tact and choreography by dancers Florinda Camilleri and Zoe Camilleri. - Ascendor
Ascendor unknown < Back Ascendor is a Heavy Metal quintet surging from the island of Gozo (MALTA) which was formed in July 2011 by drummer Paul Formosa who had been looking for members to form a Metal band. Guitarists Andy Fava and Joe Costa met up for a jam with Paul, from which all three perceived the apparent chemistry present both in the style of playing as well as in the writing of original material. The trio started out by composing their first original songs as well as covering a number of songs by their idols and main influences, namely Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Slayer and Judas Priest. When a solid foundation was established, the band began looking to complete their line-up. In the fall of 2011 they auditioned Steve Muscat, who immediately secured and cemented his place as the frontman with his powerful vocals and stage attitude along with the energy and vitality added to cover songs (not to mention the infinite amount of body art, which compliments nicely the aesthetics of the band’s image). By the turn of 2012 the band contacted Blasio Muscat, an old friend to take up bass duties. Blasio gladly accepted the offer and not only did he bolster the band’s sound with his solid rhythms but also brought in grooves which took the song writing to the next level. The band needed to establish an identity which reflected each member as well as their sound. Having seen the final line up the name Ascendor was chosen, reflecting the notion of a Phoenix reborn and ascending from the ashes in a similar way of how the band was formed from the remnants of previous local acts. Ascendor prepared a set consisting of numerous covers as well as a handful of original songs which they delivered to the local metal fans on their debut gig at a local bar in Gozo. Ascendor spent 2013 planning and playing further gigs in Malta and Gozo; such as participating in the annual edition of XMA (Xtreme Metal Assault) and also making it to the final of the ‘Hard-Rock Rising’ battle of the bands, while simultaneously working on the recording of their first album. The eight-track album titled ‘Becoming’ was released in August 2013, preceded by the releases of their first ever singles titled ‘In the Hands of the Enemy’ and ‘War Machine’, giving just a little taste of what the album will be offering. Even before the release of Becoming, Ascendor had already finalised two brand new songs and spent the rest of 2013 and the first half of 2014 writing further material. After opening for the NWOBHM titans Angel Witch in May, the band hit the studio again in Summer to record their second album, with the aim of delivering a more established and consistent sound. Following a turbulent period for all the members, the album was titled ‘Drive my Demons Away’ as all the songs on the album represent the band's recent adverse experiences. While keeping 2015 busy with live performances, including supporting Belgian Thrashers Evil Invaders as well as participating in the annual edition of the XMA, Ascendor released their second record online in April and launched it officially in August during a show with fellow metal band Angelcrypt (whom in 2019, Paul would temporarily join as their drummer for a European tour, as well as recording the drum tracks for their 2020 release ‘Dawn of the Emperor’). After relocating from their original rehearsal space Ascendor had planned to start working on new material and preparing for more live shows but were faced with unfortunate health issues which put the band on halt for over a year. When everyone thought Ascendor were dead and buried, on the 13th October 2017 Ascendor marked their comeback by releasing their first ever music video for the single “Metalhead”, off of their third album “Disturb the Dust”. The record was released in May 2018, preceded by the band's long-awaited live performance at the 2018 edition of Shellshock Metal Fest. 2019 saw the band focusing solely on the writing and recording of their new record. In 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing everyone to stay locked inside, Ascendor ensured they finalised the production of their fourth studio record ‘Circle of Violence’. In June of the same year, the title track of the album was released as the first single off the album, accompanied by a music video. July and August saw the release of a further two singles; opening track ‘Silver Bullet’, accompanied by a quarantine-style music video, and ‘Creatures of the Shadow’ respectively. On the 25th September, Circle of Violence was released for online streaming as well as physical distribution Band Members Blasio Muscat Vocals, Bass Blasio Muscat Paul Formosa Drums Paul Formosa Andy Fava Guitars Andy Fava Steve Muscat Vocals Steve Muscat Joe Costa Guitars Joe Costa Discography Date Title Type Listen Buy the band's merch Follow the band Previous Band Next Band

- Claire Cordina, Singer
< Back Claire Cordina Singer Claire Cordina passion for music began at a very young age. Music was always present in her home, whether on the radio, her father’s LP player, or the television, and from an early age she dreamed of becoming a singer and dancer. Her musical influences are wide-ranging, spanning Italian pop music, artists such as Prince, flamenco, and 70s rock. During her teenage years, she developed a deep love for alternative rock, with a particular admiration for female singer-songwriters such as Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, and Fiona Apple. At the age of 7, Claire began training in classical guitar and music theory. During her sixth form and university years, she performed as the singer in several bands, mainly covering songs while also performing some original material. Over the years, she collaborated with various musicians, including guitarist and composer Franco Tartaglia, Djun’s Charles Cassar, and musician James Baldacchino. After obtaining her medical degree, she moved to Scotland to pursue postgraduate training and specialise in medical microbiology. While living in Scotland, she joined a blues rock band. After returning to Malta in 2015, Claire felt a strong desire to give a voice to personal experiences and the subjects closest to her heart, which led her to focus more seriously on songwriting. Her songs are largely inspired by personal experiences and events that stir strong emotions within her. The themes she explores include the environment, personal struggles, motherhood, relationships, social issues such as corruption, and humanity’s alienation from nature. Naturally introverted, her songwriting tends to be introspective and self-analytical. “You Want Me” is the first single from her first EP. For this EP, she collaborated with James Baldacchino, who produced and recorded it, Franco Tartaglia on guitar, and Luke Briffa on drums. - Weeping Silence
Weeping Silence < Back Weeping Silence is a Melodic Metal band with Death and Progressive Metal influences based in Malta. The band has evolved steadily since its formation in 1998 and has since released four albums with record labels, the latest one being through Massacre Records (DE). Originally established in the late 90’s as a Gothic Metal act, Weeping Silence started its journey with its first milestone being the release of “End of an Era” in 2008. After a series of lineup changes, the band morphed into the Female-Fronted, Gothic Metal band it was mostly known for. In 2011, Weeping Silence released its second album ‘Theatre of Life’ that was characterised by mid-pace gothic elements and grandiose orchestrations. The track ‘Dark Waters’ off this album was voted first in the EKR A-List People’s Choice Poll. After the release of this album, the band decided to open the door for international festivals and tours, and opportunities started presenting themselves immediately. Weeping Silence entered the studio again to record ‘For the Unsung’. Released in deluxe digipack edition in 2012 by Ravenheart Rec (UK), it features male backing vocals for the first time, and marked a step towards a more pronounced Doom Metal element in the band. Within this more aggressive, gothic-doom framework, Anders Jacobsson of renowned Swedish act Draconian featured as guest vocalist. Towards the end of 2012, Weeping Silence made a change in the vocal line-up. Diane Camenzuli & Dario Pace Taliana joined ranks and a year later the band was nominated for the ‘Best Heavy Metal Band’ award in the National Malta Music Awards (MMAs), and won the ‘Best Band of the Year 2012’ in the Female Metal Webzine awards. The fourth album ‘Opus IV Oblivion‘, released with heavy-weights Massacre Records (DE), was a Gothic Doom Metal album that brought together the best that Weeping Silence had to offer: Heavy, melodic, dark and full of ambience with doom-laden riffs. This album was listed in Top 20 Best-of Album lists of 2015 in several webzines & Top-10 Awards in Metal Storm, with an array of great reviews & press-clips in magazines such as Metal Hammer, Legacy & Orkus. 2018 was a pivotal year for Weeping Silence that saw a significant member and style reshuffle of the band. Founding member and guitarist Mario Ellul, vocalist Dario Pace Taliana and keyboardist Alison Ellul decided to continue with Weeping Silence and look for new members. Drummer Julian ‘Julinu’ Mallia, guitarist Glenn Paul Pace, and eventually bassist Manuel Spiteri brought in new influences that markedly developed the band’s creative direction. The eclectic mix of old and new members led Weeping Silence to evolve into the male-fronted, melodic metal (with death and prog metal influences) band that it is now. The current album, due to be released in 2023, is a solid manifestation of the band’s artistic statement and is intended to propel the band into a promising creative path. - X-Tend
X-Tend < Back In 1984, in a house tucked away in an alley in the locality of St Julian’s, Godwin De Bono, Chris Cassar, and Sandra Sammut came together. A short time later, Eric “Ace” Calleja also joined them. From there, the members began a journey of experimentation, creating electronic music using a selection of synthesisers they owned. The melodies they composed started coming together into the group’s first musical compositions. The four members felt that the sound and style of the songs they were producing had something special. So, they decided to record some demos at a proper recording studio. It was Vince Fabri who suggested to Eric that the group should use the services of Dalli Studios in Valletta. They didn’t hesitate, they contacted Charles Dalli right away and visited the studio to showcase the material they had been working on. Charles immediately noticed that the group’s music was very similar to what he himself was creating. He even told them he was working on a similar electronic music project. The inevitable happened; it was clear that Charles and the other four members would join forces. Together, they started producing and recording their first songs in a new and innovative style of that era known as New Wave, which was the global craze at the time. Thirty-nine years have passed since those early days, and Charles, Godwin, and Eric are still producing music to this day. Ever since the release of their first single, “I Can Feel”, which won the Passaporto per San Remo Festival at the prestigious Ariston Theatre and the launch of their debut album "EXTEND" in 1985, they never looked back. Since then, they have managed to produce an impressive amount of music: no less than 12 albums, along with numerous singles and music videos, filmed both in Malta and in major European cities such as Paris, Monaco, San Remo, Val D’Aosta, and Rome. Beyond Malta and Gozo, where X-Tend have performed in practically every town and village, they’ve also shared the stage with international stars like Marc Almond (Soft Cell), Haddaway, Imagination, Wet Wet Wet, Jive Bunny, Bonnie Tyler, Mattia Bazar, and many more. X-Tend have been invited to perform concerts in Italy, Germany, Turkey, Tunisia, and even as far as Australia. There, they were warmly welcomed by the Maltese emigrant community in Sydney and Melbourne, where they performed a total of four concerts and also launched a CD album during that tour. Over the years, other musicians such as Noel D’Anastas, Mark Attard, and Mark Abela were also part of X-Tend, each contributing to the group at different points in time. Additionally, Danny Dalli, Robert G., and Lorna Fiorini were also members of the group for a period. Many of the group’s songs were written by Charles and Eric, while Godwin and Charles dedicated themselves to the production, arrangements, and mixing of most of the songs they released. An interesting fact is that several of the songs written back in the 1980s are still popular today among radio station listeners and other media platforms. X-Tend have frequently appeared on local television stations and were recently invited as Classic Artists at the prestigious "Mużika Mużika" festival, where they performed their first hit “I Can Feel” in Maltese for the very first time. The song, titled "Inħoss Ġo Qalbi", featured lyrics and music by Charles Dalli and was performed by X-Tend together with the emerging Maltese band OXYGYN Band Members Discography Date Title Type Listen Buy the band's merch X-Tend 1984-2024 [CD] | X-Tend More Details X-Tend 1984-2024 [LP] | X-Tend More Details X-Tend Re-Mixes 2024 [LP] | X-Tend More Details Follow the band Previous Band Next Band

- Vinyl Paradise
Vinyl Paradise < Back Vinyl Paradise is a Maltese blues/blues-rock power-trio made up of Ben Bailey (guitar/vocals), Patrick Camilleri (drums) and Antoine Tonna (bass). Their collective love for the blues and knowledge of its conventions and techniques have resulted in the band delivering their own masterful take on the genre to audiences right across Malta and the UK. The three have had years of musical focus to develop their unique style, first meeting in the band The Creepers - another blues band focused on replicating the sound of ‘vintage American blues’ - and later forming the trio Vinyl Paradise in January 2017. The band spent the next few years honing their skillset and playing countless festivals, clubs, and concerts to an ever-growing audience. In February 2023, the band wrote and recorded a five-song live EP called “Live at Winehouse”, which they toured around London and Kent a few months later, with stops at venues including the Troubadour, the St Moritz Club Soho, and the Bourne Music Club. With the release of their debut album “Vinyl Paradise”, written entirely by the band and recorded at David Vella’s outstanding Temple Studios, the band is now geared and ready to take their bluesy sound and exhilarating live show to the global stage. Vinyl Paradise takes inspiration from the likes of the “3 Kings”, Cream, Gary Clark Jr, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer, Jimi Hendrix, amongst others. Their style blends blues, funk, rock n‘ roll, and soul, with deep grooves on the bass and drums laying the foundation for deft guitar-work and 60s-soul-inspired vocals. These elements are immediately recognisable in their original work, as well as any covers in their set, which are always reworked to satisfy these criteria.
