Dean Montanaro: A Harmonious Journey from Rock Roots to Jazz Virtuosity

Dean Montanaro, a dynamic and versatile musician, has carved a niche for himself in the world of jazz and beyond. Born and raised in Malta, Montanaro's journey in music began early, fuelled by a passion that saw him transitioning from the vibrant rock and heavy metal scenes of his homeland to the sophisticated and complex realms of jazz and improvisation.

Montanaro's musical journey began in his teenage years when he played rock and heavy metal in dark garage complexes across Malta. His significant early stint was with the progressive rock band Colourblind. With Colourblind, Montanaro experienced a formative period that included numerous live performances. Notably, on his 18th birthday with Colourblind, he played at The Farsons Beer Festival and, catching a flight just hours later with the band to perform at the Aya Napa Youth Festival in Cyprus. Followed later on (in 2014) with another performance in Sweden with Angela Vella Zarb (Swing Nuages and Blue Tangerine), who was sharing vocal duties with Paul Sky at the time. This period of intense activity and exposure to live audiences set the foundation for Montanaro’s professional career and deepened his love for performance and collaboration.

Montanaro’s formal education in music is a testament to his dedication and pursuit of excellence. He embarked on his higher education journey at Codarts Rotterdam in 2017, where he pursued a Bachelor of Music in jazz electric bass. His time at Codarts was marked by academic excellence, culminating in a cum laude graduation in 2021. During his undergraduate studies, he also spent an Erasmus exchange semester at ESMUC Barcelona, a period that enriched his musical outlook and exposed him to diverse influences.


In 2021, Montanaro continued his academic pursuits at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he undertook a Master of Music in jazz electric bass. His master's degree, completed in 2023 with an outstanding final score of 9.5/10, further solidified his expertise and artistry. Throughout his academic journey, Montanaro had the privilege of studying under some of the most renowned bass teachers, including Gary Willis, Glen Gaddum, Mario Rossy, Jeroen Vierdag, Theo de Jong, Alessandro Fongaro, and Ruud Ouwehand. His education was not limited to performance; he also studied composition with acclaimed teachers such as Reinier Baas, Stefan Lievestro, Oscar van Dillen, and Amit Gur.


Montanaro’s career is marked by a blend of performance, recording, and teaching. As a performer, he has been a fixture on the international jazz scene, gracing stages at prestigious festivals and venues. His notable performances include appearances at the Malta Jazz Festival, the November Music Festival in Den Bosch, the Düsseldorfer Jazz Rally, and the North Sea Jazz Festival. He has toured extensively, performing in Paris, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Dubai, and more, collaborating with a diverse array of artists and ensembles.

In addition to his performance career, Montanaro has a rich discography that showcases his versatility and creativity. His recordings span various genres and styles, reflecting his eclectic musical tastes. Notable recordings include "First Impression" with Antares Flare, "Inner Scars" with BRiMBA, "Santuário and Barra do Ribeiro" with Plankton Orchestra featuring Yamandu Costa, and many others. His projects often push the boundaries of conventional jazz, incorporating elements of electronic music, afro-beat, and improvisational experimentation.


Montanaro's teaching career is equally impressive. He has been teaching privately for over six years, working with students ranging from beginners to advanced levels and spanning a wide age range. His approach to teaching is informed by his extensive performance experience and academic training, allowing him to offer a comprehensive and nuanced perspective to his students.


One of the defining aspects of Montanaro’s career is his commitment to collaboration and innovation. He is actively involved in several bands, including Antares Flare, a psychedelic afro-beat jazz outfit; Su Nichel, an eclectic jazz collective with ethnic and folk influences; and Mipa & the Best Language Ever, a unique collaboration between musicians and a literary artist. Each of these projects reflects Montanaro’s ability to blend different musical elements and create something uniquely his own.

His ongoing projects, including new material with Brimba, who shall return on stage at Offbeat on the 2nd August, promise to bring fresh and exciting music to his audience.
