Malta Jazz Festival 2026 Returns to Valletta with a Week of World-Class Performances

The Malta Jazz Festival 2026 is set to return to Valletta between 6 and 11 July, reaffirming its position as one of the Mediterranean’s most significant jazz gatherings. The festival will once again centre its programme around the historic Ta’ Liesse waterfront overlooking the Grand Harbour, while also expanding performances to other key cultural venues in the capital, including the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) and the Valletta Campus Theatre. This multi-venue approach continues to reflect the festival’s intention to merge contemporary jazz performance with Malta’s distinctive architectural and cultural landscape.

Under the artistic direction of Sandro Zerafa, the festival maintains a clear focus on contemporary jazz and creative expression, prioritising artistic exploration and innovation over commercial trends. This curatorial vision has helped establish the Malta Jazz Festival as a respected platform within the international jazz circuit, consistently attracting musicians who work at the forefront of modern improvisational and compositional practices.

The 2026 programme brings together a diverse selection of international and local artists. Among the most anticipated performances is Brazilian jazz guitarist Toninho Horta, who will appear with a quartet featuring Seamus Blake, Mathias Allamane, and Jeff Ballard, presenting a collaboration that unites influential figures from across generations of jazz. Another major highlight is Ghost-Note, the high-energy funk and jazz collective founded by Robert Searight and Nate Werth, known for their rhythmically complex and electrifying live shows.

American pianist Aaron Parks is also featured, bringing his distinctive approach that blends lyricism with modern harmonic textures. The festival further showcases European innovation through French drummer and composer Guilhem Flouzat with his project Bottommost, alongside Maltese bassist and composer Pete Galea with his ĦOSS Project, reflecting the growing international presence of Maltese jazz musicians.

Guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel is listed among the festival’s major names, contributing to a programme that continues to emphasise artistic depth and contemporary relevance. According to the official programme, additional highlights include performances such as the Dominic Galea Quartet opening night tribute at Valletta Campus Theatre, featuring Maltese jazz composers, which anchors the festival in the local jazz tradition while connecting it to its international scope. The programme also includes family-oriented performances that introduce younger audiences to jazz through interactive and educational formats.

The Malta Jazz Festival 2026 continues its tradition of combining world-class international performers with a strong representation of local talent, set against one of Europe’s most atmospheric waterfront stages. With further announcements expected in the lead-up to the event, the festival is positioned to continue its legacy as a key meeting point for contemporary jazz in the region.
