Mary Rose Mallia, born on May 9, 1953, in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Malta, has been a cornerstone of the Maltese entertainment industry for over five decades. Her multifaceted career encompasses singing, acting, and international performances, making her a beloved figure both locally and abroad.
At the tender age of 14, Mary Rose immersed herself in the festival scene, and by 15, she clinched victory at the Malta Song Festival. Her talent soon transcended national borders, leading her to participate in esteemed events such as the Split International Song Festival in Yugoslavia and the Yamaha Festival of Song in Japan. In 1972, she proudly represented Malta at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo with the song Id-Dinja Tagħna

In 1971, Mary Rose achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Maltese singer to record a stereo long-play album in Maltese. Titled Għanjiet Minn Malta (Songs from Malta), the album was recorded in London and featured compositions by Maestro Charles Camilleri with lyrics by poet Joe Friggieri. Notable tracks include It-Tfajla Tal-Irdum, Rajt Raġel, Il-Bejjiegħa tal-Ward, and Il-Pont ta' Wied Rummiena. Reflecting on this collaboration, Mary Rose credits her father, Philip, for his unwavering support, stating, "My father was always my mentor."
Her international acclaim extended to Germany, where she adopted the stage name Mary Charles. During her 16-year tenure there, she released the 1985 hit Blue Summer Lies and starred in the musical La Piazza, touring Western Germany for over a year. Her portrayal was so compelling that finding an understudy proved impossible.

Mary Rose's versatility shines through her extensive acting career. She has graced both stage and screen, with memorable roles in television series such as Simpatiċi, where she portrayed Lieni, and performances in productions like Ir-Ronnie, Il-Madonna taċ-Ċoqqa, and Il-Mandraġġara. Her stage presence has been felt in operettas like Die Fliedermaus, Orpheus in the Underworld, and The Merry Widow, as well as in Maltese musicals including Ġensna, Taħt Tlett Saltniet, and Karmena Abdilla.
In 2018, marking over 50 years in the industry, Mary Rose released a self-titled album produced by Michele Centonza. The album features nine English tracks, including Wings of a Dove, The Music in Me, and Forever Young. Each song holds personal significance, with Wings of a Dove and The Room dedicated to her father. Discussing her enduring passion, she remarked, "At 65, I feel more energetic than at the age of 25."

Mary Rose's commitment to Maltese culture continues with her role as Nanna Manna in a children's cartoon series produced by the National Literacy Agency in collaboration with Turi Studio. This initiative aims to impart wisdom and entertainment to young audiences through engaging storytelling.

Reflecting on her illustrious career, Mary Rose emphasises the importance of positivity and humility. She advises, "Always be positive, even when the ship is sinking... It's never too late to do what you love."
Mary Rose Mallia's enduring legacy is a testament to her talent, resilience, and unwavering dedication to her art, solidifying her status as a cherished icon in Maltese culture.
