The 2000’s (first part)



Abnoba


Active between 2003 and 2007, Abnoba was a black metal band that incorporated power metal and progressive elements into their sound. Their 2005 demo Revelation featured tracks like "It All Comes to an End" and "Monsters of Depravity." The demo was recorded live in a garage and later mastered, resulting in some minor quality issues. The band's lineup consisted of Charles (vocals), Owen Galea (guitar), Joshua Attard (keyboards), Oliver Grech (bass), and Luke Briffa (drums). Formerly known as En-raged, Abnoba earned recognition in the underground metal scene for their genre-blending style before disbanding in 2007.


Dying Signals


Dying Signals, a deathcore band formed in 2006, was known for its technical prowess and emotive compositions. Their 2011 album Intuitive Senses (released by Rising Records, UK) featured tracks such as "Forged Imprisonment" and "Plagued Year," demonstrating their complex structures and emotional intensity. The lineup included Ant Micallef (guitar), Malcolm Alden and Christian Said (vocals), Daniel Said (drums), and Clint "Skat" Briffa (bass). Past members included Owen Galea and Nicky Manche on guitar, Matthew Mangion on bass, Richard Bastock on guitar, and Melchior Borg and Karl Grech on vocals. Despite their innovative contributions to deathcore, the band disbanded in 2012.


Dysmenorrhea


Dysmenorrhea, a goregrind band, was known for their raw aggression and technical musicianship. Their 2001 demo Bloody Tears of the Big Bad Wolf featured brutal tracks like "The Sound of Pus" and "Cannibal Autopsy." The band included Conrad Borg (vocals), Malcolm Callus (guitar), Kurt Loveskirt (bass), and Jaz Bukaz (drums). Conrad Borg now fronts Oblique Vision, and Callus went on to be involved with other acts like Sceptocrypt (as did Conrad Borg) and Weeping Silence. Dysmenorrhea left a lasting impression on extreme metal fans before disbanding.


Erythuria


Active from 2003 to 2008, Erythuria was a brutal death metal band that combined intense compositions with complex song structures. Their 2007 EP Annihilate to Repent included tracks like "Prelude" and "Touched by the Gods." The band's lineup consisted of Melchior Borg (vocals), Max Vassallo (drums and vocals) also known for his work with Abysmal Torment, Loathe, and former member of Arachnid, Item, Lady Lizard, and Knockturn Alley, Andrew "Xiby" Sciberras (guitar), John Azzopardi (guitar), and former Thy Legion Shaun McCarthy (bass). Erythuria's music resonated with fans of extreme metal, making a lasting impact on the underground scene before their disbandment.


Hemlock


Hemlock was a death metal and grindcore band formed in 2001, recognized for their aggressive blend of death and thrash metal elements. Their 2003 demo, Vomiting Forth Intestinal Remnants, included tracks like "Butchered Alive," "Vomiting Forth Intestinal Remnants," and "Choking on Vaginal Discharge," exemplifying their raw intensity and dark, grotesque aesthetic. The band solidified their brutal style with their 2004 demo, Molested Cervical Tissue, featuring tracks such as "Hacked After Birth," "Molested Cervical Tissue," and "Stench of Rotting Innards," maintaining their tradition of unrelenting, extreme compositions.


The band's lineup included Julian Dingli on bass (also of In the Name Of), Andrew Mifsud on drums, Steve Vassallo on vocals (formerly of In the Name Of), Campos on guitars (known for his work with Arachnid, Angel Blade, Angelcrypt, Blind Saviour, and Martyrium), and Joey Zammit on guitars.


Hemlock's music struck a chord with fans of extreme metal, leaving a lasting impact on the underground scene with their fusion of grindcore ferocity and death metal brutality.


Hydra


Formed in 2003, Hydra blended symphonic metal with heavy guitar riffs, incorporating classical elements into their music. Their 2004 demo Night of the Titans showcased their cinematic soundscapes with tracks like "Final Judgment (Rev 13:14)" and "Riding the Wings of Destiny." In April 2005, they released another demo, "Demo 2005," which included the tracks "Riding the Wings of Destiny (Revisited)" and "Shadow of the Cross."


Hydra's lineup included Nathan Brimmer (vocals), Mark Ciscaldi (lead guitar), Cesco (rhythm guitar), Thomas (keyboards), Warrior (drums), and Zir (bass). Their symphonic metal approach left a mark on the underground scene.


Improbus Atrum

Improbus Atrum, a melodic black metal band, created a dark and immersive atmosphere with their raw and unrelenting sound. Their 2007 EP Bearing the Mark featured tracks like "Soul Fucking in Eternal Dark" and "Endless Desecration." The band's lineup included Ayrton Tonna (guitar), Alesio Torrisi (drums), Keith Muscat (keyboards) (now with Damaged & Co.), and Keith Farrugia (vocals), with Jean Paul Vella (bass) playing briefly between 2007 and 2008. Other members included 'MaiDen' Ellul (vocals), Kurt Dimech (bass) and Theo Torrisi (guitars). Their dedication to the genre left a lasting impact on the melodic black metal scene.


In The Name Of


Formed in 2014, In The Name Of was a deathcore band known for their visceral breakdowns and intense vocals. Their EP Glutton Kings featured tracks such as "Glutton Kings" and "Evolution Comes from Chaos." The band's lineup included Fallen Icon’s Clive Scerri (bass), Stefan Schembri (guitar), Steve Vassallo (drums), Leli Apap (guitar/vocals), and Melchior Borg (lead vocals). Steve Vassallo was also a member of Hemlock, and Melchior Borg was associated with bands such as Abysmal Torment, Erythuria, Beheaded, Dying Signals, and Despised..
