  • Valerie Cassar, Vocals

< Back Valerie Cassar Vocals Mandy Calleja Valerie started out singing when she was 6 years old and participated in festivals until the age of ten. Her love for singing rekindled at 24 years of age when she met colleagues at work who asked her to join a band. She started out as a backing singer, later taking the role of a singer with Dislost, a rock ballad band. During this time she put into practice her natural gift of song writing and writing lyrics also in other projects with various musicians. In the meantime, she was asked to be a backing vocalist for Oblique visions which she happily accepted. After some time with the band, Valerie became one of the leading vocalist singing clean vocals together with a male growler singer. She participated with Oblique Visions at the Extreme Metal Festival in 2013 which was her last show with the band in Buskett. She made her way back into the metal scene in 2018 in an Iron maiden tribute band and again in 2024 where she performed several songs at The Garage and Beerfest. In the meantime she started in a new project called Rogue, a 70s and 80s cover band with some of Malta's old time musicians, who went live the first time in June and aiming to go live again soon. She loves to sing heavy metal and rock, especially from the 80s era but also any type of genre. Her passion for music, singing and performing grow stronger, and she believes that the vibe music creates is magical, especially when a project is being put together and when performing live. • Carl Cassar, Bassist

< Back Carl Cassar Bassist Facebook Carl Cassar’s musical journey began during his secondary school years, influenced by friends who played instruments and his brother’s eclectic CD collection. These early inspirations set him on a path that would lead to a lifelong passion for music, though he never pursued it professionally. Instead, Carl describes himself as a musician who follows his passion while maintaining a day job outside the music world. One of the most significant periods in Carl's life was his adolescence, where his love for music took root. While he may not be a full-time musician, music is a deep passion that shapes much of his identity. He’s had formal training in guitar for several years but is a self-taught bass player, a role he particularly enjoys. Over the years, Carl’s approach to music has been shaped by a multitude of influences, making it difficult for him to single out a particular artist or style that defines his work. This multitude of inspirations contributes to the unique and diverse nature of his musical approach. Carl is most drawn to genres like jazz fusion and progressive rock, which allow for diversity and complexity, but he doesn’t like to be pigeonholed. “There’s good music in any genre,” he explains, which reflects his broad musical exploration and open-mindedness. This ethos has guided his involvement in several bands, although many have not made it beyond the rehearsal space. One of his standout projects was Xidja, a hip-hop band performing original songs in Maltese, where the bass played a pivotal role. Though Xidja didn’t break through commercially, it remains a special project for Carl. Currently, Carl is part of From Sheep to Wolves, a collaboration that has lasted for nearly four years—his longest and most stable band involvement to date. He attributes this to the successful balance of expectations and ambitions within the band, acknowledging the challenges that come with maintaining harmony in a group. For Carl, the dynamics within a band can be tricky, and in the past, drama and conflicting visions have caused issues. However, with From Sheep to Wolves, Carl feels like they are “doing something right.” Carl’s musical experiences are diverse, but one of his most cherished memories was his first live performance at the age of 12, where he played guitar for a school band. Moments like this, and every instance where he sees people enjoying his music, are his proudest achievements. He is especially excited about the upcoming debut album with From Sheep to Wolves and the ongoing work on their second album. The band’s sound has evolved, and Carl believes that’s a healthy progression. Outside of the band, Carl is also exploring the possibility of working on non-metal projects, keeping his creative horizons wide open. Carl's hopes for his audience are simple but profound. In an age where 30-second clips dominate attention spans, he wishes for listeners to experience the full album journey, appreciating the depth and thoughtfulness of a complete body of work from start to finish. If given the opportunity, Carl would love to jam with Tim Commerford from Audioslave, particularly to play something from their first album. As a nod to his deep admiration for the band’s late frontman, Carl jokes that he’d also give Chris Cornell a big hug during the session. A fun fact about Carl that might surprise his audience is that, although he is left-handed, he plays the bass guitar right-handed—a unique quirk that reflects his unconventional approach to both music and life. Through his rich musical experiences and diverse collaborations, Carl Cassar embodies a deep commitment to his art, driven by passion rather than profession. Whether in a rehearsal space or on stage, Carl continues to explore new musical frontiers while staying true to the joy and freedom that music brings him. • Steve Muscat, Vocals

< Back Steve Muscat Vocals Modern Tribe Photography Before Joe (Costa, Guitars) was invited to join up with Ascendor, he had been jamming with Steve and two other Gozitan musicians (who later formed the Classic Rock band ‘Upper Lip’). While the band had been on what seemed the impossible task of looking for a Metal frontman, Joe mentioned he was jamming with a vocalist who “loved Metal, has a Phil Anselmo-ish voice and was covered in body art”. This mouth-watering description led to the guys inviting Steve for an audition. No auditions needed; as soon as Steve picked up the mic, everyone knew he was the ideal guy to front the band. The band’s decision of giving Steve the frontman’s role was further proved as the correct one when he started writing lyrics for the band’s original tunes. Steve is also an experienced musician, having fronted ‘Sacratress’ as well as playing the keyboards for ’Malevolous Cadaver’, both Gozitan Metal bands active in the 1990s. Steve also spent a number of years in the USA where he fronted the American band ‘Scarred’ with whom he managed to play the Legendary CBGBs. • Albert Bell, Vocals, Bass, Guitars

< Back Albert Bell Vocals, Bass, Guitars Born on 6th November, 1967, Albert “Dr.Doom” Bell has been championing heavy metal ever since his entry into the Maltese metal since the 1980s. Handling bass duties, he formed his first band Exorcist (later renamed Kremation) in 1984, which was one of the Island’s incipient speed/thrash metal bands. Kremation hit the local stages regularly and passionately in their hey-day and released a full-length album on cassette titled “Guardian of the Realm” in 1987, which was launched at City Hall theatre in Floriana (previously called ABC). Following Kremation’s untimely demise in 1988, Albert joined Malta’s most seminal speed/thrash metal band Vandals on bass in 1989, leaving the band in 1991 to help establish Forsaken and doom metal as a powerful force in Malta and beyond. With five full-length albums, two EPs and one split EP and countless live shows both locally and abroad, Forsaken remain a mainstay in epic doom metal, and have helped to internationalise the Maltese metal scene. In 2006, Albert co-founded Nomad Son – a band with combines vintage, classic rock elements with doom metal, which is presently working on its long-awaited fourth full-length album while still hitting the stage with the same furore and fervour that characterised the band’s live shows in Malta and abroad since their inception. In 2011, Albert decided to start his own studio project , Albert Bell’s Sacro Sanctus , which sees Albert handling all the song-writing, vocals and most of the instrumentation, while paying homage to his formative influences, from Venom and Celtic Frost, to Motorhead and Black Sabbath. A fourth full-length album (charting 700 years of medieval European history) titled “Sword of Fierbois” was released in September, 2022 once more on Italy’s Metal on Metal Records. In 2019, Albert re-joined Vandals (now called X-Vandals ) on second guitar. The band are presently focused on writing a new album to which Albert is also contributing to. Albert is also the founder of the Malta Doom Metal festival, which is now on hiatus after 10 memorable editions (between 2009-2018) where Albert and his team secured memorable shows by various doom and old school metal bands to the gratification of the Island’s passionate doom and old school metal community. In 2021, Albert was recruited by the historic Brazilian doom band The Cross to handle all the bass work for their new album “Act II: Walls of the Forgotten”. The album was released by Cyprus’ Pitch Black Records early 2023. Discography Date Title Type Listen Member of : Albert Bell's Sacro Sanctus Forsaken Nomad Son X-Vandals Follow the artist
