< Back Melissa Portelli Vocals Matt Hush Melissa Portelli is the lead vocalist and writer in the band Chasing Pandora. After her graduation in 2004 she found a job at Tickety-boo, an artist management company which managed comedian Billy Connolly and was owned by Steve Brown, Elton John’s producer for many years. Working as Brown’s PA, her job took an unexpected twist one day when he heard her sing and offered to help her realise her dream of becoming a singer/songwriter. Chasing Pandora was formed in 2006 and their first EP was released that October at a launch concert in Malta. Their single “Feel the Rain” reached the top of the charts in Malta and won “Best Newcomer Award” at the Bay Music Awards. In May 2007, Chasing Pandora released their debut album, “Mocking the Mocking Bird”, receiving great local acclaim. December of that year also saw the band receive 3 Malta Music Awards. Chasing Pandora released the EP “Two” in April 2008. Notably, “Two” featured the popular track “Memories”, which thus far has been a favourite with audiences for years and was nominated for “Best Song” at the Malta Music Awards. Throughout 2008, Mel performed with Chasing Pandora at various concerts around Malta and London, and in November they released their second EP, “Wide Eyed Beautiful”. With the launch of Chasing Pandora’s second full album, “The Driver and the Dancer” in June 2009, Mel performed a series of gigs in London and received positive reviews from “The Fly”, “Acoustic Music Magazine” and “Rock N Reel”. The end of 2009 marked the release of the first Chasing Pandora single to be released in the UK, “Running in Circles”, which was subsequently played on BBC Radio 2 and featured in another week of London-based gigs. The success paved the way for “The Driver and the Dancer” to also be released in the UK in 2010, which was then performed live to a full house at the RoundHouse Music Room, enjoyed a review in The Independent newspaper, and was performed live as part of the Janice Long BBC Radio show. After the release of their fourth EP, “People”, Chasing Pandora were invited to perform at the North by North-East Festival in Toronto, being chosen from 600,000 applicants to be amongst 6,000 bands to perform at the event. Various concerts in Malta followed for Chasing Pandora throughout 2010 and 2011, until the duo disbanded in October 2011. Apart from other projects, such as Ant in Alaska with guitarist Alex Mallia where they release the song ‘Wildflowers’ and her solo EP ‘Mel Xkejfa - Who me?’ recorded with Peter Borg at Railway Studios, Melissa also wrote and performed for Naupaca’s Dance Factory ‘Divina’ , which were shows held at the MCC in Valletta and the Aurora Theatre in Gozo. Melissa recently started working on creating her e-book with poetry called ‘The Beast Called Grief’ in order to share her love for words & experiences. Mel has also performed as Ira Losco’s special guest at her concerts , as well as other performances with local musicians at events such as Xirka Rock & Strait to the Blues. Apart from that, Melissa works with guitarist Danny Magro, where they perform around Malta & Gozo under her solo stage name ‘ Mel Xkejfa’. In 2023, Melissa and Keith Anthony reunited for a concert called ‘ Memorji’ where they performed a few songs to a packed audience in Victoria. At the moment, Melissa is writing with Chasing Pandora and they are preparing to release the new album in September/ October 2024 where it will be launched at the Oratory of Don Bosco on the 5th of October with a full band concert. - Sceptocrypt
Sceptocrypt < Back The original Sceptocrypt formed on the island of Malta in 1992. A band from the smallest European nation yet with big intentions – to forge a sound distinctively its own, an extreme metal (at a time where the tag was not yet penned to define bands cross-bordering death, doom, black metal and more) looking out of its own box (embracing non-metal styles, but without loosing its abrasive edge!), its members ardently into the 90s underground scene running Rancid Soup zine & radio show , and music scholars alike, always keen for original sounds, as inspirations and as their own. Releasing only a demo & a rehearsal tape in its timespan to 1999, Sceptocrypt’s idea was received warmly by the leading press of the time – like Aardschock (NL), Fight Amnesia (DE), Ill Literature (USA), Koito (IT), MorticiaNumskull (NL), Dusk Woerot (Colombia), Death Bite (Lith), Fanfare (BE), Brutalism.com (NL), Eternal Darkness (USA), etc. – with worldwide reviews as “demo of the month” “one of the best demos of 1996” “ALL labels interested in progressive extreme metal please check in with Sceptocrypt” “not your everyday kind of metal” “a hell of a musical masterpiece” “one of the most brilliant demotapes I have heard in years” “Sceptocrypt have good solutions for their music, something that the majority of underground bands have not” “don’t know where to put this band in, maybe a big positive plus-point for them” “recommended for a zine editor with 5000 bands yet no-one sounding like Sceptocrypt” “such different and sophisticated music”. There was also label interest back then. Some, like Holy Records (FR), defined Sceptocrypt as “experimental music, very well structured, unbelievable!!!”, whereas non-metal label Bliss Records (UK) opined that “death metal usually does absolutely nothing for me, but Sceptocrypt are more melodic, innovative and original than I was expecting”. Others, in turn, were interested to hear more, so much so that Sceptocrypt self-financed and recorded a full-length !26 Hrs 72 mins …. the need to differ) in 1999. Sadly, bad luck stroke, and Sceptocrypt disbanded later that year due to a string of adverse effects (including financial), with this CD never released or promoted to any label/zine. In fact, apart from some tracks featuring in compilations (Underground Media, Ematofagia, and Mass Metal), only few close contacts had listened to the whole !26 Hrs 72 Mins …. the need to differ) when it was recorded. But this was mended later in 2014 when it was made available for all at our Bandcamp , also to co-incide with the an attempt to revive Sceptocrypt yet again with a different sound, this time in London (where Malcolm now resides)! Not being able to complete a line-up, this was put on ice in 2015. Despite all odds, the idea of reviving Sceptocrypt never left founding member Malcolm, and since late 2022 he started jamming some of the 2014 songs & newer ideas with different musicians. Near to 2 LPs running time of music have been composed, one of which will be shared in 2024 in the form of “The Wards Outside”. Exploring Antonin Artaud released from a mental asylum and asking if it was him or society that was going doolally, in a way we found ourselves back in a music industry that operates differently than we left it. So let’s see where this goes.In the interim, a newer song “The Unwanted Requiem” was composed, recorded & released in Nov 2023, a bit different than our usual sound, but then again, we like to surprise. - The Rifffs MT
The Rifffs MT < Back Every band has a story to tell and legendary cult band ’The Rifffs‘ (not to be mistaken with ‘The Riffs’) are definitely a band worthy of that story. From landing a record deal in the early 80s with Alternative music distributed by Pinnacle, to having their debut single ‘Dance Music for the 80s Depression’ played by the world famous DJ John Peel which also hit high in the British Alternative charts , this band has more than a story to tell. But the greatest story of all is the fact that their first single stood the test of time and till today is considered a timeless classic . Since reuniting in 2006, The Rifffs MT, as they are now known, have released two albums. Moonstomp in 2009 and Can’t Stop the People in 2014. This enabled the band to tour outside of their home country of Malta and play numerous gigs in the Czech Republic and Germany. In 2015 they fulfilled their dream of performing in the UK at the International Ska Festival and various other venues throughout the country. The following year they performed at the Boomtown Fair Festival in Winchester, UK. The band are now working on their third album which is scheduled for release in 2021. - Nigel 'Noogie' Buttigieg, Vocals, Guitars
< Back Nigel 'Noogie' Buttigieg Vocals, Guitars Nigel grew up around music. Following his dad and fellow band member, Charles Buttigieg around, during his rehearsals with his old bands, taking him to gigs and telling him stories of how Malta was rich in live music during the eighties, a scene which was dominated by rock, punk, metal and new romantics. Listening to these stories Nigel strongly believes that he was born in the wrong era. And agrees that he really got into music when his dad put on Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid' on their old stereo. His father says that after his son heard that song, no one could stop him from singing. He was 10. Then he heard Iron Maiden's 'Number of the Beast' and at that time the thing that impressed him the most wasn't Bruce Dickinson's vocals, (which by the way he was, still is and will always will be the best vocalist that ever lived in his opinion) it was Maiden's musicianship and the chemistry together, and that's when he decided to start playing an instrument. He started off by learning and playing the drums, but after 4 years Nigel realised, he wanted something more up front facing the crowds, so he switched to guitar and had been hooked ever since. - Rogue
Rogue < Back Rogue is an electrifying new band that brings together a diverse array of musical talents. The lineup includes singer Juan Xerri from Animamortua and backing singer Valerie Cassar, known for her work with the Iron Maiden Tribute band as well as Oblique Visions and Dislost. Adding a touch of vintage rock is guitarist Adrian Mercieca, formerly of the prog rock band Sphinx. The rhythm section features bassist Philip "Bagigu" Camilleri, who currently performs with Valiantis, Rock Troupers, and the Iron Maiden Tribute band, and drummer Luciano Borg, an ex-member of Ivory Cross with a rich history in bands like Kraken, Scimitar, and Frantic. Andre Schembri on Keyboards, formerly with Ivory Cross and now with Stoned, a Rolling Stones tribute band, completes the lineup. The name "Rogue" was suggested by Luciano Borg, who explained, "Rogue means 'an unprincipled person with savage or destructive tendencies.' We thought the meaning was appropriate to the band being wild and destructive in nature." The band's origins trace back to jam sessions between Luciano and Adrian in a garage. They eventually invited other members to join, fostering a strong chemistry and a shared passion for music. After honing their sound with covers, they made their live debut at The Garage, sharing the stage with Rankin. This debut performance marked the beginning of their journey, characterized by high energy and a raw, powerful sound. - Different Minds
Different Minds Charisse Agius < Back Different Minds is a local pop rock band. It was originally formed more than 20 years ago but the band's ambitions were cut short because all instruments and sound systems were stolen from the garage they used to hire for reherseals. The original single 'I Can Change' was recorded during that period but eventually it was released 20 years later, when in Summer 2019 the founding members - lead singer Robert G and acoustic guitarist Jason Mizzi - decided to regroup Different Minds again. Former keyboardist Elton Abela joined as well. Jeff Hailey on lead guitars, Godwin Debono on bass guitar and Julio Quintero on drums are the new members for this 6-men band. A total of 6 original singles were released by Different Minds. 'Across the Borderline' in 2020 and Helping Hand in 2022 are their most popular songs and both made it to the top places in the PRS Malta Airplay Chart and 'L-Aqwa 20 - Klassifika tal-Maltin'. The latest single 'Different Not Less' was released in April 2023. The band gig's are also popular for all-time pop rock cover versions.
