Sunday, June 9th marked the closing of this year’s edition of Earth Garden, a festival that surely needs no introduction. Since its inception in 2007, Earth Garden has stealthily gained a reputation as one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, basking in the radiant allure of the sun-soaked island of Malta. Garnering recognition as one of the top 20 festivals in Europe on two occasions, Earth Garden stands as a testament to its unparalleled charm and magnetic appeal. But the day will remain special for the return on stage, after five years, of one of Malta’s iconic bands, ‘Xtruppaw’. The rumours that this might happen started during last year’s edition of Rock The South, but none of the band members or any of the organisers from both festivals ever confirmed any of the rumours until announcing them earlier this year. Although they were not billed as the headliner (Kula Shaker headlined Sunday), the news caused a furore amongst music lovers from all genres. Of course, putting on a show after years of hibernation is no small feat. Once this was confirmed, the band started planning, but rehearsals came first. This was not as easy as one might think, with two members of the band living abroad, Rex in Saudi Arabia and Jeffrey in Spain. The time when the individual members started practicing varied, but they began a few months earlier. The members in Malta started rehearsing one month and a half months before Earth Garden. Rex joined them three weeks before the concert. As for "full band rehearsals," all the members were in Malta two weeks before the gig, rehearsing almost every day. Rehearsals with the session musicians were conducted separately. Although the buzz that Xtruppaw was playing live again had been stirred months before, the festival grounds had a certain atmosphere since early Sunday afternoon. The build-up for Xtruppaw actually, commenced a few days before when a hilarious advert popped up on Facebook. Most of the metalheads were spotted mostly at the Music Playground, where some of the best jams took place during the four days of the festival. They made their way towards the Roots Stage, where preparations were underway by a numerous group of hazmat suit-covered stagehands, plus the band members in incognito, hurrying to set up the stage. Once done, it was time for the show. Of course, an explanation of why Xtruppaw were not seen around was necessary, and a small docu-film was presented on the big screen on stage. In short, the narrator asked about the band members, ultimately showing that they had been cryogenically frozen for five years. A lab assistant searching for a wall socket to charge his Nokia 3310 accidentally unplugged the one giving power to the cryogen units, thus five thawing guys were assisted on stage with a ‘Sci-Fi Opening Theme Song’ in the background, prompting the band into one of their most famous songs, ‘Diska Cool Għar-Radio’. We asked the band whose idea was the intro and choreography during the concert. They replied, “We wanted to come up with a funny concept of why Xtruppaw 'vanished.' During group chats and calls that we made regularly for the preparation of the concert, we came up with various ideas, but the idea that we were cryogenically frozen stuck the most. Then we started trying to come up with ideas of how we could present ourselves during the concert. Jeffrey had the idea to make it a form of a television program. But the other pieces, such as the mobile phone and someone cutting the light of the tanks where we were frozen, etc., which together created the opening of the concert, came from brainstorming and collective ideas from all members of the band.” From the first notes of the first song, it was clear that this was not going to be just another Xtruppaw gig. Maybe the long wait to see them perform again, maybe the alcohol, or the heat of that afternoon, but the energy shown by the crowd was amazing, and I have not witnessed it for a long time at any concert on the island. The crowd (probably in thousands) danced, crowd surfed, jumped, cheered, and sang every lyric with every song the band performed on stage. The setlist was as follows: Diska Cool Għar-Radio, Ħabbtu ma’ Rizza, Min Ħexa Mexa, L-Avventuri Meraviljużi ta’ Żaren Elvis Ciappara u Ħrejjef Simili, Rajt ma Rajtx, Frutsalad, El Cupa Hangue, Dear Poni, (Ewro) Viżjoni ta’ Mħabba, Hot Rock, Ġibtha B’Idejja, Dlam Cappa u Riħa ta’ Ħara, Għanja ta’ l-iXtruppaw, Il-Puberta’, Pudina, Iċ-Ċawl Iċul, Glorja Tonna, Għana, Malta, Innu Marċ (Viva l-Kbir San Ċipress), Ġenerazzjoni ta’ Meqrudin: basically the best from their releases: ‘Is-CD Ta' L-iXtruppaw’ (2006) and ‘Xtruppozitorju’ (2013). We again asked the band, “Surely you expected the people in front of you, but did you expect how you were welcomed?” to which they replied, “Although people's comments in the weeks and days before the concert were very positive, we were not expecting the crowd participation and buzz to be so great. Of course, we are very honoured, and we greatly appreciate the support we have had.” Unfortunately, the time allocated for the band ran out, and they had to vacate the stage for Kula Shaker. They surely were a hard act to follow. Everybody was left with the same impressions after that ecstatic show, and not even one from the crowd was disillusioned. The band gave their best, and the crowd reacted to both the show and the music, making it an evening to remember. Hopefully, the show was recorded for the future. It would be nice for the fans to have a memento of the night, maybe on DVD or just a CD (double probably) to remember the evening when Xtruppaw returned from the depths of the cryogenic abyss. As mentioned before, two members work and live abroad, thus making it very difficult for us to get another performance soon, hence a memento of the gig would be very appropriate.

Zabbeth and Vaulderie Set to Release Split Album In an exciting development for metal fans, Zabbeth will be returning with a new split album featuring American band Vaulderie. This collaboration promises to deliver a powerful and darkly atmospheric experience, drawing heavily on the influences of iconic metal bands like Bathory, Sabbat, and Venom. Hailing from Tacoma, Washington, Vaulderie is a formidable presence in the metal scene. The band comprises of Archfiend Vukodlak on bass and vocals, Nostenebris on drums, and guitarists Draconoth and Khamazotz. Their debut, self-produced EP, "Fiends of the Night," written in 2022, marked their entry into the metal world with a bang. Initially a three-piece, Vaulderie's first performance took place at the legendary Central Saloon in Seattle, where they played alongside Kömmand in support of Ares Kingdom. Following this, Khamazotz joined the band, and they began recording as a four-piece, self-releasing the EP in December 2022. Three months later, they signed with Witches Brew for an official release. Vaulderie's sound is deeply influenced by the legendary Bathory, as well as Sabbat and Venom. Their live performances have seen them share the stage with notable acts such as The Accüsed A.D., Spiter, Desolus, Mortiferum, Physique, Funeral Chant, and Aberration. In 2023, their band shirt even made a cameo in the Skeletal Remains music video for "Relentless Appetite," underscoring their growing influence in the metal community. This latest release came about when Cheryl from Witches Brew approached Zabbeth about a split album with Vaulderie. Zabbeth enthusiastically agreed, and the collaboration began. Both bands drew inspiration from Bathory's early works, with Zabbeth focusing on unreleased demos recorded before Bathory's yellow goat album, while Vaulderie added their own vampiric twist to the classic sound. Vaulderie recorded their tracks at The Blood Shed in Tacoma, Washington, and sent them to Chaos (Zabbeth) for mixing and mastering at Subterranea Studios. The album’s artwork was a collaborative effort between Chaos and Vukodlak, brought to life by Shaun Farrugia, guitarist of Rankin and Mur.Doc 104. For this recording, Chaos recruited Zain Gauci, from Halcyon, Pilgrimage, Saint Vermin and Horned Majesty on drums. The split album is set to be released on CD and 10” Vinyl formats, with editions available in Black and White splatter, Translucent Red, and Black. The release dates are scheduled for June 24th and July 24th, respectively. The Grand Harbour will come alive on Saturday 22nd June with the fifth edition of the Valletta Pageant of the Seas. Starting at 9pm, the show will feature traditional dgħajjes tal-pass and regatta boats, followed by an impressive light projection show with an original score by Cyprian Cassar. With over 35 years of experience in producing large-scale events, including the Paris Olympics, Aquatique Show promises a mesmerizing experience. Created by the multifaceted Toni Sant, this podcast series stands as a testament to Malta's rich musical tapestry and the evolving realm of digital media. Each weekly episode typically features a diverse selection of four or five tracks, introducing listeners to a broad spectrum of Maltese musical talent. Occasionally, special editions deviate from this format, either focusing on fewer tracks or exploring specific themes in depth. Such variety has kept the series fresh and engaging, continually drawing in audiences with its eclectic offerings. The Evolution of a Digital Pioneer In the early days of the series, Toni Sant coined the term poddata (plural: poddati), establishing the Maltese lexicon for podcasts. Last week while celebrating a fantastic performance at one of our favourite Maltese festivals, Earth Garden, we were informed by the organizers that all their social media channels were down, potentially for reasons connected to our band. Upon investigation, we discovered that this disruption was caused by Jogy Bo Smid, a former member who was officially dismissed from the band in 2019 due to misconduct, violence, theft and misappropriation of band funds. Since his departure, Jogy Bo Smid has engaged in a series of malicious actions aimed at sabotaging our online presence on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Spotify. He is fully aware that Manatapu holds a pre-existing trademark in Malta, and holds rights under Maltese and European law to use the name Manatapu for our music distribution and live performances. Despite this knowledge, he continues to file unfounded and bad faith content takedown requests to undermine our presence. We want to make it clear that Jogy Bo Smid's attempts to register multiple trademarks under the name "Manatapu" are invalid and in bad faith - aimed only at causing disruption, by abusing of the trademark registration system. Our original and Malta-registered trademark holds precedence, and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has confirmed this and ruled against his claims on classes and services related to music, particularly with the trademark number 018093527, which he frequently references. His actions appear to be driven by an intent to mislead and damage our band's reputation and commercial interests. After failing to impact us directly, he has now targeted our trusted partners, including some of Malta’s largest festivals and most prominent organizers in the local music industry. This escalation to a direct attack on the Maltese music scene has prompted us to file multiple police reports. His attempts appear to be not only vindictive and maliccious, but are now also allegedly criminal in nature. We are prepared to take all necessary legal measures to prevent further damage to Manatapu and our partners. We want to reassure our fans that despite our current Facebook page being down, Manatapu remains strong. We will continue to release new music and deliver exceptional performances. ‘The Collector’ Music Video Receives “Honorable Mention” at the Berlin Music Video Awards In a thrilling achievement for the band Weeping Silence, the music video for ‘The Collector’ from their latest album 𝗜𝗦𝗟𝗘𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗟𝗢𝗥𝗘 has been awarded an “Honorable Mention” at the prestigious Berlin Music Video Awards 2024. This captivating video draws inspiration from the Maltese folklore character “Ċensa l-Mewt” - a spectral female entity cloaked in an “ghonnella” who gathers souls at life’s end. The band’s drummer, Julian Mallia, not only directed but also conceptualized and storyboarded this visually arresting narrative. His creative vision was brought to life with the expertise of seasoned video creator Cedric Vella (Ched Rick), who managed the filming, editing, and visual effects. This collaborative effort also featured the talent of veteran Maltese actors Mikhail Basmadjian as the male protagonist and Sandra Davis embodying Death (Ċensa l-Mewt). The stunning makeup was crafted by Violet Vella. William Smith Earns Master of Music in Jazz Drums from Manhattan School of Music William Smith, has recently graduated with a Master of Music degree in jazz drums from the renowned Manhattan School of Music in New York. During his studies, Smith had the privilege of learning from esteemed musicians and educators such as Kendrick Scott, John Riley, Buster Williams, Marc Cary, and Christopher Rosenberg. Throughout his time at the Manhattan School of Music, Smith showcased his skills in various high-profile performances. Notably, he played at Dizzy’s Club with the MSM Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Darcy James Argue, sharing the stage with acclaimed trumpet player Ingrid Jensen and saxophonist Melissa Aldana. Smith also performed alongside emerging talents in the New York jazz scene, including the exceptional trombonist Marty Scott. Smith's graduate recital was a significant milestone, featuring mostly new original compositions as well as pieces from his debut album, "Nomad," and a work by his musical idol, Thelonious Monk. Smith’s decision to produce "Nomad" was influenced by the positive reception of his compositions during his final recital at the HKU Conservatory in Utrecht. Encouraged by his tutors' praise, he decided to turn these pieces into a recorded album. The album features performances by three musicians and friends he met in the Netherlands: Prashant Samlal on electric guitar, Murat Ali Cengiz on piano, and Jonathan Ho Chin Kiat on double bass. In August 2023, Smith embarked on a new chapter, relocating to the United States to pursue his master’s degree in jazz drums at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, following a successful audition. In the early 1980s, a cultural renaissance began on the Tigne' promontory in Sliema, Malta, with the formation of Rokarja AST. This organization, spearheaded by Philip Pace, aimed to encourage, and support various cultural initiatives, most prominently establishing a vibrant music commune in the former British Army barracks. These barracks, with their thick, historical walls, soon resonated with the sounds of rock, punk, and metal, becoming a haven for musicians and fans alike. Fort Tigné, located at Tigné Point in Sliema, Malta, is a polygonal fort constructed by the Order of Saint John between 1793 and 1795 to defend the entrance to Marsamxett Harbour. As one of the oldest polygonal forts worldwide, it underwent significant modifications by the British in the 19th century and continued to serve military purposes until 1979. Rokarja AST's journey began with the transformation of the ex-ammunition depot in the fort into a rehearsal space. The first band to occupy this space was the punk outfit Abstrass, followed swiftly by the hard rock band Acid. These initial occupants set the tone for the diverse musical experimentation that would define the community. The bands forming part of the AST community were given numerous opportunities to perform live. The former St. Luke's Chapel, situated on the edge of the barracks, was renamed Ċentru Ħin Ħieles (Free Time Centre). This venue, along with other spaces within the barracks, including a stretch of land large enough for outdoor concerts overlooking Marsamxett Harbour, became central to the AST experience. The chapel and the outdoor concert area hosted a variety of events, from intimate performances to large gatherings, drawing crowds who came to experience the energetic and eclectic music scene. The AST community played a vital role in the Maltese music scene, spawning numerous bands that would go on to become staples of the local music landscape.Some of the bands that were part of Rokarja AST at various points include 43 Ltd, Abstrass, Access, Acid, Artwork, Asgard, Atlam, B3, Blind Distress, Chi-2, Dance The Ghost, Davy Jones Band, Export, Fluid, General Lee, Gone Bonkers, Hangover, Kraken, Man and White, Members Only, Overdose, Passion Blade, Prinz Eugene, Red Led, Resumb, Rough Trade, Sphinx, Shaktonyx, Something In Ash, Structure, Subverts, Talisman, The Faith, The Joy Circuit, The Ophidian Twin, The Rifffs, Valdacry and Witchcraft. Among the most notable were three concerts: the performance by Subverts and Hangover on Friday, 18 March 1983; the show featuring Overdose and Acid on Saturday, 28 May 1983; and the triple bill with Davy Jones, Tony Grimaud, and Atlam at Tigne Chapel on Saturday, 9 July 1983. Tigné also hosted one of the most attended gigs on the island during Maltafest on August 9 and 10, 1985. Headlined by Nazareth, the festival featured performances by Acid, Prinz Eugen, Fluid, Witchcraft, Spectres, Structure, and Subverts. In 1986 Gloria Gaynor attracted the same amount when she headlined that year’s edition. The decline of the association began when rehearsal spaces were frequently broken into and equipment was stolen or set on fire, leading some bands to seek more secure locations. This disruption caused some bands to split up or go on hiatus, which may have also contributed to the downturn of the rock and metal music scene experienced in the late 90s. During the early 2000s, the area underwent redevelopment that transformed it beyond recognition, becoming yet another casualty of modernization and so-called 'progress.' Decades after its inception, Rokarja AST's legacy was celebrated with a reunion. On Saturday, 31 March 2012, former band members, roadies, relatives, and friends gathered at the Black Pearl in Ta' Xbiex. Coordinated by Philip Pace, Mark Mallia, Joe Paris, Sonya Tanti, and Paul Spiteri, this event marked 30 years of AST. Michael Bugeja and Michelle Sullivan provided playlists throughout the evening, and 12th Ode, including some former Rokarja musicians, played a live set of classic rock covers. Following the reunion, Philip Pace and Mark Mallia were interviewed by Noel Mifsud on his One Radio show "Rock Moods" on Thursday, 12 April 2012. They revealed that a second reunion event took place on Monday, 30 April 2012, featuring the band Colourblind. During its heyday, the Tigne Barracks were more than just a collection of rehearsal spaces; they were a bustling rock village. Musicians and fans practically lived there, immersed in a mix of rock, punk, new wave, goth, metal, and alternative music. Entering the village, one could hear a symphony of different sounds and feel the powerful, positive energy. The community's concerts, both indoor at the old chapel and outdoor with the stunning backdrop of the port and open sea, were mind-blowing experiences that left a lasting impression on all who attended. Arts Council Malta to Provide Financial Aid to Displaced Musicians in Birkirkara In response to the recent displacement of musicians from their rehearsal spaces in Birkirkara, Arts Council Malta (ACM) has announced a comprehensive support initiative. The council confirmed that it will provide financial assistance to all affected musicians following extensive discussions with officials from the Ministry for Cultural Heritage, the Arts and Local Government (MHAL), and representatives of the displaced bands. ACM’s commitment to supporting Malta's musicians and bands is evident in its proactive approach to this crisis. The eviction from privately owned spaces in ex-Rampol, Birkirkara has disrupted rehearsal routines and imposed significant financial burdens on the musicians. Addressing these issues promptly is crucial to prevent long-term negative impacts on their careers. To alleviate immediate financial hardships, ACM will offer subsidies amounting to €1,500 for the first year, followed by an additional €600 for each of the next two years. This support package, totaling €2,700 per unit over three years, is designed to offset the increased costs associated with securing new rehearsal spaces, including rent, utilities, soundproofing, and maintenance. By reducing these financial strains, the support will enable bands to concentrate on their music, ensuring a smoother and more stable transition. ACM Executive Chairman Albert Marshall emphasized the council's swift response to the crisis, stating: “Arts Council Malta understands the importance of investing in the alternative music sector and believes that musicians in this sector should benefit from public funding schemes. Given that bands previously paid €800-€900 per year, a €1,500 subsidy represents significant support, covering approximately two years of their original expenses. Throughout the years, Freddie's primary occupation was as a draughtsman. Portelli's career has spanned over 40 years and began as a member and chief songwriter of the group, The Malta Bums. He toured America, Canada, and Germany with the group for 5 months, and after returning to Malta in 1966, wrote the song "Viva Malta", and later, "Mur Hallini". His recordings have been released in Australia, Canada, America, and England. Freddie was also the leader of the legendary band "Black Train" with whom he released self-penned hit records. Freddie was a national waterpolo player, involved with his hometown’s Sirens waterpolo team as well as with Neptunes and Valletta with whom he won the premier championship. He was an effective player with Malta's national team with whom he won the International Independence Tournament cup in 1964, the same year he won the premier championship with Neptunes. It was his father who encouraged him to learn the guitar, and that's where Freddie's musical journey began. He took a few lessons from Carmelo Muscat, a laid-back, happy-go-lucky genius nicknamed "Il-Kaptan." Muscat, a friend of Freddie's father from Mellieħa and a fellow music enthusiast who played the guitar and mandolin, became Freddie's first music teacher. Freddie began playing with various bands at a very young age, around 13 years old. In the early sixties he formed The Malta Bums and shared his knowledge with each member of the group. First members where two (Perronis) Mario Perrone and Paul Perrone {both passed away some years ago}, then he met Tony Camilleri, known as il-Bayzo and showed him something on bass playing and they started doing harmonies together. When Mario emigrated to Australia, he was replaced by Tony Muscat, then known as il Maduwi, who started playing rhythm guitar and at times even lead guitar. Later, Paul Perrone could not continue and was replaced by Tony Bartolo Il-Gegu, who was suggested to Freddie by his father, to play drums and that was the final lineup of the ‘originals’ known as The Malta Bums. As a singer, Freddie was initially opposed to participating in song contests of the era. However, with his band, then known simply as The Bums, they decided to enter one. Despite being the least equipped band, they made it to the finals. On the final day, after the curtain rose, one of their amps started distorting, prompting them to walk off the stage. The Boys won the festival, and the two bands celebrated together the next day. Freddie Portelli founded The Black Train in 1973 after he left The Malta Bums. The initial lineup included Freddie Portelli on lead guitar and vocals, Freddie Calleja on drums and vocals, and George Baldacchino on bass and vocals. After George moved to Australia, Joe Vella took over as the bassist. The band's name, Black Train, was chosen spontaneously when local promoter Leli Saliba urgently needed a name for publicity. The band quickly rose to prominence, consistently being voted Malta's best local band in popularity polls. The Black Train performed regularly at venues such as the Phoenicia Ballroom and Palace Hall, and they also held summer concerts across Malta and Gozo. Their hit records and rising popularity led to international invitations for concerts and TV appearances in Canada, the UK, and Italy. During their career, The Black Train released two albums and around twelve successful vinyl records. However, as their commitments increased, managing frequent gigs and appearances became challenging for Freddie Portelli, who was also still working as a draughtsman and involved in water polo, and he decided to put his career on hold. In an interview at the time, he said: “…we were singing every night beside the weekend and was preparing to get married …… so I took a few weeks off!” He found this period of respite quite pleasant as he noticed that people were beginning to pay less attention to him wherever he went. A few weeks turned into years, but music was in Freddie's veins. In 2001, he was strongly urged to make a comeback, particularly by Martin Schembri, known as Ir-Reġin, and Godwin and Mario Difesa of KTA Records. Reluctantly, Freddie began his solo comeback, performing Saturday nights at a venue in St. Paul’s Bay. The outcome exceeded all expectations, leading to the release of the double album "Ghall Dejjem," which included a new recording of the monumental "Viva Malta" and once again broke all sales records in the nation. He participated in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest three times with "Don’t Be Gone Away" (1994), "There’s a Song" (1996), and "Summer Again" (1997). All three songs were later featured on the Hospice Movement CD album released in the summer of 2015. This comeback also led him to perform abroad, with a notable concert alongside Demis Roussos, where each artist performed for an hour and fifteen minutes. Freddie continued to release numerous CD singles and albums, producing around 24 in total, including a triple album titled "Reaching Out." Over his career, he wrote approximately 400 songs. In Freddie’s words: “As long as people kept buying my releases, thus elevating my morale, I’ll keep writing and composing.” He performed internationally many times, visiting countries such as Germany, the USA, Canada, Australia, England, Italy, Greece, North Africa, and even performing on luxury ships. Freddie married Carmen (née Darmanin) on December 5, 1972, and they have two daughters. Claudette, who became a specialist in clinical psychology, recorded some songs as a little girl, including the hit single "Claudette." His other daughter, Yvette, was a presenter on television and radio before moving to Italy. “I can’t imagine what else I could have done. I’ve sold out concerts both abroad and in Malta, appeared on major international TV stations in England, the USA, Canada, Australia, and more, mainly performing live and always mentioning Malta. I’ve released many successful records and been very successful in water polo. I also achieved my wish of becoming a draughtsman and was a principal on various projects around Malta. I can’t imagine achieving more. One regret I have is missing opportunities to meet legendary people, like Elvis Presley, due to my forgetfulness.” In 2019 a smash-hit jukebox musical Il-Kbir Għadu Ġej was staged, making a return in 2022 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre with a bigger and better spectacle than the original show staged in 2019. Created and directed by Sean Buhagiar, based on the music hits of Freddie Portelli, and penned by Malcolm Galea with musical direction by Dominic Galea and choreography by Warren Bonello, the 2022 edition of the musical featured most of the original cast, with some new additions. The coveted lead role of Il-Kredu was once again be played by singer Kevin Borg. Amber, Marilena Gauci, Max Dingli, Michela Galea, Mark Tonna, Petra and Manwel Cassar are also resumed their roles, while Debbie Scerri, Julie Pomorski, Gianluca Mifsud, Sean Briffa and Daron Galea joined the cast. The musical features 30 of Portelli’s hits, including the popular Viva Malta, Flimkien, Xewqat Sbieħ, Se Jkolli Nemmen, Għal Dejjem and Ħallini but also lesser-known numbers like Bħalek Hawn Kemm Trid, Ma Taħraqni B’Xejn and Dak ir-Rock n’ Roll. The producers have also released a remix of Ħallini, by DJ Micimago, which is available on Spotify along with the original cast recording of the musical. Shows were staged between July 30 and August 15, 2022, and was supported by Arts Council Malta and Kinnie and produced by Balzunetta Productions. Freddie Portelli was honored with the Medal for Service to the Republic on Tuesday, December 13, 2016, by the then-President of Malta, the Honorable Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca. Additionally, he received the golden medal and the Ġieħ San Pawl il-Baħar. He was also awarded for being the best Maltese record seller, along with a lifetime achievement award. His upcoming biography, titled "Freddie Portelli 'il-Kbir Għadu Gej," is set to be released soon, while another book “Il-Ħajja u l-Istorja tal-Kantant Malti Freddie Portelli” was published in 2018.

Strummin announces the celebratory 20th anniversary concert — 20 Years of Gold Strummin’ Foundation, during their Annual General Meeting, has unveiled the theme for their 20th anniversary concert. Named ‘20 Years of Gold’, the concert will be looking back at the past 20 editions of the concert — held since 2002 — celebrating the positive impact the experience has left in people’s lives. In the run up to the concert, the Foundation will be sharing the playlists from the past 19 concerts, highlighting the beneficiaries that Strummin’ has collaborated with during the years. The artwork, developed by DNA, brings the guitar and strings to the forefront. The 100 strings surrounding the guitar’s sound hole represent the participants’ guitar strings during the last 20 editions. The play between gold and the different colours of the light spectrum, are symbolic of the cast members’ characters, backgrounds and personalities that come together for a common good. Strummin’ 20 Years of Gold will be held at St Agatha’s Auditorium in Rabat on the 8th and 9th November 2024. All proceeds will be donated to Dr Klown. Damaged & Co. Unveils New Drummer Over the Weekend During last weekend, the renowned band Damaged & Co. announced their new drummer, Ismael Bonello. This revelation followed an extensive audition process where Bonello's preparation, determination, and enthusiasm stood out, making him a natural fit for the band. Bonello's addition to Damaged & Co. marks an exciting chapter for the group. His impressive performance during the auditions left a lasting impression on the band members, solidifying his place in the Damaged & Co. family. In addition to this major announcement, the band also completed filming the remaining scenes of their music video, which had been in progress since last year. Crowned Events - Battle of the Bands Participants Introduced With the participants for Crowned Events - Battle of the Bands now introduced, anticipation is building for their performances. The event will take place at The Garage in Żebbuġ on July 5th and 6th, and attendees are eagerly encouraged to show up and cheer for these emerging bands. St. Paul's Bay Local Council Honours Late Singer Anthony "Bayzo" Camilleri On Tuesday evening, May 28th, the St. Paul’s Bay Local Council held a memorial to honour the late singer Anthony Camilleri, affectionately known as Bayzo. This tribute celebrated his remarkable talent and majestic voice, which left an indelible mark on Maltese music. During the ceremony, St. Paul’s Bay Mayor Alfred Grima expressed his gratitude to Bayzo’s family, fellow singers, and everyone who attended. In his speech, he acknowledged the significance of Bayzo’s contributions to the local music scene and the community's shared loss. The memorial featured the unveiling of a bust of Bayzo, masterfully crafted by the talented sculptor Indri Attard. This lasting tribute stands as a testament to Bayzo’s enduring legacy. Ian J. Vella, a member of the music group CODA, reflected on the event in a heartfelt Facebook post. "It was a privilege to take part in the unveiling of the commemorative bust of the late legendary Tony Camilleri, also known as il Bayzo," he wrote. Claire Marante Releases Introspective Single "You Want Me" Claire Marante has just released a new song titled "You Want Me," influenced by artists like Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, and Fiona Apple. The song addresses themes of sexual violence and abuse and draws inspiration from Elvis Costello's "I Want You" and Michael Winterbottom's film of the same name. "You Want Me" is the first single from an upcoming EP set to be released in September. For this EP, Marante collaborated with James Baldacchino, who produced and recorded the tracks, Franco Tartaglia on guitar, and Luke Briffa on drums. Recently, Marante shared, “I mostly write about my personal experiences and events that evoke strong emotions in me. Aidan Somers Launches Fundraiser for Malta Arts Complex Following last week’s news about rehearsal spaces, many artists and bands voiced their opinions and justified complaints. However, a piece of news that should particularly interest any artist is Aidan Somers’ fundraising campaign to create the Malta Music & Performing Arts Complex. “We are launching this campaign to create a vibrant community of musicians and artists who will co-share facilities in artist residencies, memberships, and educational programs. Many musicians have recently been evicted from their current premises, leading to a high demand for practice spaces for creative practitioners of all forms," Somers explained. He continued, “All contributors to the project will enable us to gather the funding needed to rent an adequate space to host 20+ rooms, giving access to 60+ memberships for creative practitioners. Within two months, 40% of bands need a space ASAP, 30% by September 2024, and 30% by January 2025. Without any direct and immediate governmental support, there is a dire need for such a space, and we're actively seeking the community's help to build this project.” The funding breakdown is as follows: Rent: €150,000 (5-10 year agreement) Renovation and Furnishing: €50,000 Operational Costs (Utilities, Maintenance, Staff): €35,000 Marketing and Outreach: €15,000 “We are seeking to raise €250,000 to secure a rental space for a year, furnish it, and cover the operational costs. Berne Releases "Waves" from Debut Album "789" For fans of: London Grammar, Art School Girlfriend, The xx, RY X and Björk Berne released "Waves" on May 23, 2024. "Waves" was the second track from Berne’s debut album "789," set for release in October 2024, following "Language," which was released in March 2024. The album is inspired by how humans interact with the planet, animals, and each other. In a positive turn of events, the band revealed that James Galea is joining the band as their new guitarist. Galea, returning to the Maltese music scene after several years, is eager to make his debut with the group. He used to form part of Purple Haze and Dreamscape during the 90's. The band reassured fans that they will continue to perform and create new music, expressing excitement for the future. They thanked their supporters and signed off with a message to "stay metal!" Two Artistic Weddings on May 18: Black Metal Guitarist and Soprano, Blues Bassist and Clarinettist Tie the Knot On Saturday, May 18, two weddings took place featuring artists from different musical genres. David Cutajar, a Black Metal guitarist, married soprano Michaela Spiteri. At their reception, Michaela captivated the guests by performing three arias from various composers, dedicating them to her family and friends. David Cutajar is a member of Nokturnal Void, a band previously known as Ammutseba until they changed their name in 2020. Nokturnal Void released their debut album, "Odiiu," on November 17, 2022. Meanwhile, in another part of the island, blues bassist Elton Mifsud married his long-time partner, clarinet player Daniela Cassar. In the early 1960s, the seeds of Malta's musical revolution were sown as a young Freddie Portelli embarked on a quest to form a band. What began as a humble endeavor evolved into a remarkable journey marked by serendipitous encounters, international acclaim, and the birth of two iconic Maltese bands: The Malta Bums and The Black Train. From their origins in small gatherings to electrifying performances on German television, this is the story of how Freddie Portelli and his bands carved their names into the annals of Maltese music history. In nearly 1963, a young Freddie Portelli endeavored to assemble a band. Initially comprised of Mario Perrone, Paul Perrone, and Tony Camilleri, the lineup underwent changes due to various circumstances. Mario's relocation to Australia led to Tony Muscat, known as il-Maduwi, assuming his role on rhythm and lead guitar. Meanwhile, Paul's departure prompted Tony Bartolo Il-Gegu, recommended by Freddie's father, to take up drumming duties. Thus, the new formation of the renowned Maltese band emerged: Freddie Portelli (19), Tony Muscat (18), Tony Bartolo (17), and Tony Camilleri (Bayzo) (16). An interesting anecdote surrounds the band's name. Initially dubbed "THE BUMS" in jest due to their lack of employment, the name evolved to "MALTA BUMS" after their manager, Herr Otto Alf, coined it during their tour in Germany. This name was derived from a misinterpretation in Germany, where it was understood as "Malta’s Explosion." Their journey commenced in West Germany, traversing cities like Essen West, Dusseldorf, Duisbergwen, and Koln, where they performed live on radio and television. The band's opportunity to tour abroad materialized when a German couple, regular attendees of their rehearsals in St Paul’s Bay, offered to sponsor their trip to Germany. Herr Otto Alf facilitated the arrangements, covering expenses for a contracted 20-day tour, which extended to six months. Upon their return to Malta, they were inundated with performance requests, including a documentary feature by KOLN TV titled ‘Malta of the Malta Bums.’ Their distinct sound, characterized by musical proficiency and harmonious vocals from all four members, garnered attention. A pivotal moment arrived when they were invited to perform on Germany's esteemed TV show, following the success of their Maltese-language song "VIVA MALTA." This exposure propelled their popularity in Germany. Despite opportunities in Germany and England, conflicts arose, notably during negotiations with Apple, The Beatles' record company, over the release of their song "OLD OLIVE TREE." Disputes over copyright profits led to its cancellation. The journey of Freddie Portelli and The Malta Bums concluded in 1972 due to Freddie's burgeoning commitments. However, the band continued with new members, achieving success with hits like "L-Ewwel Tfalja Li Ħabbejt" in 1973. Eventually, The Malta Bums disbanded, with Bayzo pursuing a solo career and later forming "Bayzo u Klikka" with Anthony Bartolo (Gigu), Tony Muscat (Pempel), and Freddie Scicluna. Freddie Portelli established The Black Train in 1973. Initially, the lineup comprised Freddie Portelli on lead guitar and vocals, Freddie Calleja on drums and vocals, and George Baldacchino on bass and vocals. However, George later relocated to Australia, and Joe Vella took over as the bassist. The band's name, Black Train, originated from a spur-of-the-moment decision when a local promoter, Leli Saliba, urgently needed a name for publicity purposes. The band quickly gained prominence, consistently voted as Malta's best local band in popularity polls throughout its existence. The Black Train's regular gigs included performances at venues like the Phoenicia Ballroom and Palace Hall, supplemented by summer concerts across Malta and Gozo. They also received invitations for international performances, including concerts and TV appearances in Canada, the UK, and Italy, thanks to their hit records and popularity. During their tenure, The Black Train released two albums and approximately twelve successful vinyl records. However, as their popularity grew, so did their commitments, leading to more frequent gigs and appearances, which became challenging for Freddie Portelli to manage alongside his other endeavors, such as his profession as a draughtsman and his involvement in water polo. After twelve years, Freddie decided to take a hiatus, leading to the band's split in 1985. While Freddie Calleja briefly continued playing before retiring, Joe Vella remained active as a bassist, particularly with jazz bands like the Vinny Vella Jr. Band, until recent years. Sixteen years later, Freddie Portelli made a comeback, releasing his debut solo CD album, "Għall Dejjem," which featured old recordings he composed for both The Malta Bums and The Black Train. This album, issued by KTA Records, achieved tremendous success, undergoing multiple repressings and remaining popular to this day. "Għall Dejjem" marked the beginning of Freddie's ongoing solo career. OK OK OK - The New Song by Anthea Anthea, known as both a singer and a member of the popular ERBA’ group, has just unveiled her latest single, "OK OK OK". This lively R&B track, co-written with Matthew Muxu Mercieca and produced by InSynkAudio, explores themes of mental liberation and navigating complex emotions. On Saturday, May 11th, Zain Gauci made his debut on stage with Pilgrimage at the sixth installment of Little Devil Doom Day in Tilburg, The Netherlands. This marked the band's inaugural live performance for 2024, during which they premiered some of their latest compositions. The band expressed satisfaction with the progress of their upcoming album, suggesting it promises to be a worthy follow-up to their debut. Notably, this second album will include guest contributions, one of which was announced shortly after their performance: Elianne Anemaat has added some remarkable cello arrangements to one of the tracks. Elianne Anemaat is recognized by many for her work with Celestial Season, although she has also made notable contributions to various other projects and albums. Repercussions of Rehearsal Space Sales: A Call for Authorities' Attention After an article was published in a local newspaper on Tuesday, May 14th, concerning bands being asked to vacate their rehearsal spaces unless they purchase them, there was considerable commentary, especially from the musicians using these premises. Some of these spaces have already been sold to third parties. The song is a journal entry that enhances the fact that there are moments where you feel you become only part of this existence and so you feel this is the time to really take a good look at yourself and question if this is how you want to be in this short but fast-paced life. ‘Teatime’ is a song about self-reflection & how one finds themselves navigating life and its challenges all with the introspection that comes with age.
