< Back Chanelle Fenech Singer Chanelle Fenech is a 17 year-old, upcoming artist. She’s participated and performed in a good number of events. Her main one being Malta’s Got Talent. She participated on the first season of MGT as a solo act and made it through to the judge’s cuts but then was given the opportunity to re-participate on the second season of MGT with a choir, La Voix Harmonies. Together they got awarded Valentina Rossi’s golden buzzer and allowed them to make it all the way to the live-show and further on to the final. Now she’s broadening her horizon with songwriting and different genres which will lead her to becoming an established artist. < Back Brian Schembri Conductor, Pianist George Scintilla One of the most brilliant musicians to emerge from Malta, Brian Schembri started his music studies under the guidance of his father Carmelo Schembri, very early establishing a reputation as a highly talented concert pianist, frequently performing on TV, radio and at public concert halls. After he became the youngest ever to obtain the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (London) he continued his studies at the Kiev and Moscow “Tchaikowsky” State Conservatories. There he actively participated in the student concert life, both as pianist and conductor, winning first prize in the "Beethoven Concerto Competition". He obtained an M.A.(music) and did post-graduate course in piano with Alexander Snegiriov and Serguei Dorensky as well as conducting with Roman Kofman and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. In 1989, he was appointed assistant conductor with Michel Plasson at the Orchestre du Capitole and the Theatre du Capitole de Toulouse, also collaborating with prestigious conductors James Judd, Edoardo Muller, Serge Baudo, Yuri Temirkanov, Garcia Navarro, Armin Jordan and Emmanuel Krivine. Brian Schembri has been Chief Conductor of the OPF Orchestra, the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Music Director and Consultant of Malta National Theatre “Teatru Manoel” and Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Brian Schembri has been awarded the Malta Cultural Award and the Medal for Service to the Republic. He has collaborated with soloists including Lucia Aliberti, Tatiana Lisnic, Karen Huffstodt, Sandrine Piau, Jose Cura, Joseph Calleja, Gianluca Terranova, Oleg Kulko, Alexandre Da Costa, Alexander Kniazev, Colin Carr, Sergey Antonov, Ludmila Berlinskaia, Oleg Polianksy, Balazs Szokolay, Anne Queffelec, Emma Johnson, Julien Martineau and has performed at the “Festival Massenet”, “Kiev Symphonic Evenings”, “Octobre en Normandie”, “Les Rencontres Musicales d'Evian”, “Festa da Musica”, “Lisboa em Festa”, transmitted live on Eurovision, “Festival MusicAtlantico”, "Fêtes de Genève", “Festival de Piano Vendôme”, “Henley Festival”, “Kings Lynn Festival”, “Colmar International Festival”, “G7 Summit Concert” in Lyon which was televised internationally. He has also conducted opera productions with ARCAL, Ensemble Justiniana, the Atelier Lyrique du Centre, Opera Nomade (Paris), the Rennes and Nancy Opera Theatres, the National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Lvov, Opera Hong Kong, Lübeck Opera Theatre and has composed music for theatre productions at the Manoel Theatre, Teatru Strada Stretta in Malta, the Comédie Française in Paris and the Malta Pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia 2022. < Back Paul Formosa Drums Modern Tribe Photography Paul Formosa is a drummer originating from the island of Gozo, who has been active in the local underground scene since 2012. He picked up the drumsticks at the age of 16 after being enchanted by the performance of Metallica’s Lars Ulrich in their San Diego gig in 1992, on the DVD ‘Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge’. Ascendor: (2012 – present) Paul was the founder of the Gozitan Metal band Ascendor. Guitarists Andy Fava and Joe Costa, bassist Blasio Muscat and vocalist Steve Muscat completed the line-up and performed several gigs across both islands. They had the honour of sharing the stage with massive bands such as Angel Witch and Evil Invaders as well as making it to the finals of the Hard Rock Rising Battle of the bands in 2013. Between 2012 and 2018, Ascendor released three studio albums; ‘Becoming’, ‘Drive my Demons Away’ and ‘Disturb the Dust’, all of which were heavily influenced by thrash metal. They released their most recent record ‘Circle of Violence’ in 2020 and the latter is considered as a pure old school thrash metal album from start to end. Upper Lip: (2018 - 2019) In the summer of 2018, Upper Lip’s founding member, lead guitarist Joseph Azzopardi asked Paul to temporarily fill in as the band’s drummer until they find a permanent replacement. During his time with the Gozitan rock band, Paul played numerous gigs as well as recording six of the ten tracks on Upper Lip’s debut album ‘Deep Within’. Angelcrypt: (2018 - 2019) Paul occupied the drum stool of local Melodeath titans Angelcrypt in 2018 and during the following year, he played at the annual editions of ‘Metal Over Malta’ and ‘Metal United Worldwide’ as well as touring with the band in Croatia, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Germany. The pinnacle of this experience was when Paul got the opportunity to contribute to and record the drums for Angelcrypt’s album ‘Dawn of the Emperor’. Paul had to reluctantly part ways with Angelcrypt solely due to the hectic and demanding nature of their touring schedule. Sonic Storm: (2020 - present) While working on Ascendor’s 2020 release ‘Circle of Violence’, Paul was asked to join Karl Friggieri and Francesco Degabriele in Sonic Storm. He has played a number of gigs with Sonic Storm while contemporarily working on the release of their debut album ‘Keys to Your Ruin’, which should be released in 2023. Zabbeth: (Session) In 2022 Sean Attard (Chaos) produced and released a Bathory worship album called ‘Zabbeth’ and asked Paul to contribute his drumming to the record. < Back Ray Agius Composer Ray Agius has been active in the Maltese music scene since the early 1970s. Over the years, he has successfully participated in numerous festivals both locally and internationally, performing in countries such as Japan, Chile, Egypt, Turkey, Tunisia, Ireland, Slovakia, Romania, Kazakhstan, Australia, and Canada. Throughout his career, Ray has received several prestigious awards and honors. In 1998, he won the Best Composer Award at the Voice of Asia International Song Festival in Kazakhstan. In 2003, he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MegaHit Mediterranean Song Festival in Antalya, Turkey. Ray's songs represented Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest in Ireland in 1995 with the song “Keep Me in Mind,” and again in 1997 with “Let Me Fly.” On both occasions, he also conducted the orchestra. He was honored as Best Composer at the Malta Music Awards in 1995 and 1997. Among Ray’s most popular songs—many written in collaboration with author Alfred C. Sant—are “L-Ewwel Tfajla li Ħabbejt,” “Dak Kien Żmien,” “Fjura fil-Kantina,” “Fejn Tħobb il-Qalb,” and “Sal-Aħħar.” Jazz music also holds a special place in Ray’s heart. Recently, he recorded and released a long-playing vinyl album titled “Supernova,” featuring his original jazz compositions. X-Tend < Back In 1984, in a house tucked away in an alley in the locality of St Julian’s, Godwin De Bono, Chris Cassar, and Sandra Sammut came together. A short time later, Eric “Ace” Calleja also joined them. From there, the members began a journey of experimentation, creating electronic music using a selection of synthesisers they owned. The melodies they composed started coming together into the group’s first musical compositions. The four members felt that the sound and style of the songs they were producing had something special. So, they decided to record some demos at a proper recording studio. It was Vince Fabri who suggested to Eric that the group should use the services of Dalli Studios in Valletta. They didn’t hesitate, they contacted Charles Dalli right away and visited the studio to showcase the material they had been working on. Charles immediately noticed that the group’s music was very similar to what he himself was creating. He even told them he was working on a similar electronic music project. The inevitable happened; it was clear that Charles and the other four members would join forces. Together, they started producing and recording their first songs in a new and innovative style of that era known as New Wave, which was the global craze at the time. Thirty-nine years have passed since those early days, and Charles, Godwin, and Eric are still producing music to this day. Ever since the release of their first single, “I Can Feel”, which won the Passaporto per San Remo Festival at the prestigious Ariston Theatre and the launch of their debut album "EXTEND" in 1985, they never looked back. Since then, they have managed to produce an impressive amount of music: no less than 12 albums, along with numerous singles and music videos, filmed both in Malta and in major European cities such as Paris, Monaco, San Remo, Val D’Aosta, and Rome. Beyond Malta and Gozo, where X-Tend have performed in practically every town and village, they’ve also shared the stage with international stars like Marc Almond (Soft Cell), Haddaway, Imagination, Wet Wet Wet, Jive Bunny, Bonnie Tyler, Mattia Bazar, and many more. X-Tend have been invited to perform concerts in Italy, Germany, Turkey, Tunisia, and even as far as Australia. There, they were warmly welcomed by the Maltese emigrant community in Sydney and Melbourne, where they performed a total of four concerts and also launched a CD album during that tour. Over the years, other musicians such as Noel D’Anastas, Mark Attard, and Mark Abela were also part of X-Tend, each contributing to the group at different points in time. Additionally, Danny Dalli, Robert G., and Lorna Fiorini were also members of the group for a period. Many of the group’s songs were written by Charles and Eric, while Godwin and Charles dedicated themselves to the production, arrangements, and mixing of most of the songs they released. An interesting fact is that several of the songs written back in the 1980s are still popular today among radio station listeners and other media platforms. X-Tend have frequently appeared on local television stations and were recently invited as Classic Artists at the prestigious "Mużika Mużika" festival, where they performed their first hit “I Can Feel” in Maltese for the very first time. This innate enthusiasm propelled him to master a diverse array of instruments, starting with the acoustic, bass, and electric guitars. His musical journey swiftly expanded as he explored and experimented with various instruments, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his craft. This explorative phase in his musical career led him to a brief yet impactful tenure as the drummer for the local band Morsrot. His involvement was pivotal in the band's development, contributing significantly to the recording of their demo. As Zain's musical prowess evolved, he found his niche as the guitarist and lead vocalist of Halcyon, a band that has quickly gained local acclaim for its unique sound and dynamic performances. His musical journey took another exciting turn when he played drums for the Symphonic Death/Black Metal band Chaotic Remains, further highlighting his adaptability and skill across different musical genres. In October 2023, Zain embarked on a new chapter with Pilgrimage, stepping in as the second guitarist, a position previously held by Emanuel Portelli. This role allowed him to further refine his guitar skills and contribute to the band's evolving sound. Zain's profound connection to music also led him to create Saint Vermin, a one-man black metal project that draws inspiration from the traditional black metal scene. His EP “Together As None,” released in January 2023 and produced in collaboration with Mark Azzopardi, showcases his deep understanding of the genre and his ability to create intense, immersive soundscapes. The success of this project paved the way for another collaboration with Azzopardi, resulting in the formation of Horned Majesty in 2023. This new venture signifies Zain's continuous growth as an artist and his relentless pursuit of musical excellence. Through his various musical endeavors, Zain Gauci has established himself as a versatile and innovative musician, constantly pushing the boundaries of his artistry and leaving a significant mark on the local music scene.
