- Freddie Portellli, Singer
< Back Freddie Portellli Singer Freddie Portelli was born on May 5, 1944, in St. Paul's Bay, Malta. He received his early education at St. Paul’s Bay Primary School and later attended the Technical Institute, where he earned the City & Guilds of the London Institute Standard. Throughout his career, Freddie primarily worked as a draughtsman. Portelli's musical career began over 40 years ago as a member and chief songwriter of the group, The Malta Bums. The group toured America, Canada, and Germany for five months, and upon returning to Malta in 1966, Freddie wrote the iconic song "Viva Malta" followed by "Mur Hallini". His recordings have been released internationally, including in Australia, Canada, America, and England. Freddie also led the legendary band "Black Train", which produced several hit records. Apart from his musical accomplishments, Freddie was an accomplished water polo player. He played for his hometown’s Sirens water polo team as well as Neptunes and Valletta, winning the premier championship with Neptunes in 1964. He also played with Malta's national team, securing the International Independence Tournament cup the same year. Freddie's musical journey began with encouragement from his father to learn the guitar. His first lessons were with Carmelo Muscat, a close family friend. By the age of 13, Freddie was playing in various bands. In the early sixties, he formed The Malta Bums, sharing his musical expertise with the group members. The band underwent several lineup changes, eventually solidifying its members and gaining significant popularity. Initially reluctant to participate in song contests, Freddie and The Bums decided to enter one, reaching the finals despite being the least equipped band. This experience was a turning point in Freddie’s career. In 1973, Freddie founded The Black Train after leaving The Malta Bums. The band quickly became Malta's top local band, performing regularly at prominent venues and receiving international invitations. However, the demanding schedule led Freddie to temporarily put his career on hold. In 2001, Freddie made a successful solo comeback, spurred by encouragement from Martin Schembri and KTA Records. His return led to the release of the double album "Ghall Dejjem", which included a new recording of "Viva Malta" and broke national sales records. Freddie participated in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest three times in the mid-90s and continued to release numerous singles and albums, writing approximately 400 songs over his career. He performed internationally, including notable concerts and television appearances. Freddie married Carmen Darmanin on December 5, 1972, and they have two daughters, Claudette and Yvette. Claudette is a specialist in clinical psychology, while Yvette pursued a career in television and radio before relocating to Italy. Freddie was honored with the Medal for Service to the Republic in 2016 by the President of Malta and received several other accolades, including the golden medal and the Ġieħ San Pawl il-Baħar for his contributions to Maltese music and culture. Reflecting on his life, Freddie expressed contentment with his achievements, from musical success to his career as a draughtsman and water polo player. His legacy continues to inspire many in Malta and beyond. - Valerie Cassar, Vocals
< Back Valerie Cassar Vocals Mandy Calleja Valerie started out singing when she was 6 years old and participated in festivals until the age of ten. Her love for singing rekindled at 24 years of age when she met colleagues at work who asked her to join a band. She started out as a backing singer, later taking the role of a singer with Dislost, a rock ballad band. During this time she put into practice her natural gift of song writing and writing lyrics also in other projects with various musicians. In the meantime, she was asked to be a backing vocalist for Oblique visions which she happily accepted. After some time with the band, Valerie became one of the leading vocalist singing clean vocals together with a male growler singer. She participated with Oblique Visions at the Extreme Metal Festival in 2013 which was her last show with the band in Buskett. She made her way back into the metal scene in 2018 in an Iron maiden tribute band and again in 2024 where she performed several songs at The Garage and Beerfest. In the meantime she started in a new project called Rogue, a 70s and 80s cover band with some of Malta's old time musicians, who went live the first time in June and aiming to go live again soon. She loves to sing heavy metal and rock, especially from the 80s era but also any type of genre. Her passion for music, singing and performing grow stronger, and she believes that the vibe music creates is magical, especially when a project is being put together and when performing live. - Alexia Baldacchino, Vocals
< Back Alexia Baldacchino Vocals facebook.com Alexia Baldacchino, born in 1981, Maltese, painter and Artisan from Sliema, Malta. Alexia is the founding member of the acclaimed metal band Memento Nostri (currently inactive). The band she created focused on promoting Maltese history, in particular the Great Siege of 1565 which was the theme chosen for the concept album. In August 2006, the band launched their first single to much critical acclaim. Memento Nostri launched their promo album Pro Patria at Montekristo Estates on August 21, 2010 in an event that also featured the official launch of the band and the video of the CD's title track. They were warmly received by the general public, and quickly established Memento Nostri as one of the more unique bands our local music scene has produced. The band was nominated for 2 awards at the Malta Music Awards 2010, namely Best Heavy Metal Band and Best website, winning the latter. It was a great honour to be nominated for two awards especially having entered the awards with an EP, not a full-length album. Given the unique music combination and theme, the band received various requests from offshores record labels and touring possibilities but circumstances concerning the other band members, the band had to decline. During 2013 and 2014, she also was the vocalist of a Medieval inspired band called Bibita where together with her fellow band members she performed all around Malta in various events. Since then Alexia together with her husband, formed a duo named Tryst Arcane, creating a unique style of music which style they are calling ‘Minimal Dark’. Deliberately shorn of any conventional percussive arrangements, Tryst Arcane’s music emanates simply from an esoteric rendezvous of sweeping keys’ riffs combined with mystifying vocal melodies. Lyrics garner elements of mysticism mixed with realism pertinent to our existence. The first EP ‘Autumn’ was released on most digital platforms on the 7th October 2019 and the CD was released on 4th November, 2019. The Vinyl version was released on 7th November 2021, accompanied by a live virtual launch, released on Youtube, during Covid times. The second EP ‘Sun Of Other Days’, (featuring Emanuel Portelli, a great musician and good friend from Victims of Creation, Hemplifier, Thy Legion & Animamortua) will be released on most digital platforms on 11th August 2023, and later in 2023 this will also be released on Vinyl. From this EP, the single LURA will be released on most digital platforms on 23rd June 2023. 2023. Currently Alexia is also involved with various bands and musicians featuring as guest vocalist. - Noogie's Crew
Noogie's Crew < Back Noogie’s Crew was the dream of Nigel ‘Noogie’ Buttigieg, who at the age of sixteen, wanted to form a Hard Rock / Heavy Metal band with the intention of providing the rock scene a different sound, a sound that merged old school rock melodies and riffs with the rougher edges of modern metal. So when Noogie, on guitars and lead vocals, was joined by Charles Buttigieg and drummer Mario Dalli, they hit the ground running writing songs for Noogie’s Crew. Initially they perfomed as a trio, but in 2011 they were joined by guitarist Clive Brincat, playing at available musical venues on the Maltese islands. Another differnet thing in Noogie’s Crew was that both Charles and Mario did backing vocals to support Noogie in creating a differnet sound. In 2012, when Clive left the band, Noogie decided to concentrate more on his other venture, Infinite Loop . Noogie’s Crew took form again in 2017 , initially again as the original trio, when the first self-titled EP Noogie’s Crew, was recorded. In 2017 the band was joined by David Cassar Torreggiani on lead guitar, particpating in festivals, one of which was headlined by Blaze Bailey at the Orpheum in Gzira. When David Cassar Torrgiani decided to move on, Jonathan Camilleri joined the crew. With the inclusion of Jonathan, the band continued to improve its song writing abilites and gig performances. In 2019 the band supported Dee Snider, Kryptos and Kiss Forever. 2019 was also the year when Noogie’s Crew launched a full album entitled ‘ Till Dark Returns’. This was an album that had something to offer to all types of metalheads; classic rock sounds, headbanging riffs plus speed, tightness, power and melody. An album that was given rave reviews by foreign rock magazines and podcasts. Noogie’s Crew did their last gig on 30th October 2021, when Noogie and Jonathan both separately decided to continue their musical life in different form.
