- Celebrating 50 Years of Krokus: A Rock Legacy with Marc Storace
Marc Storace is arguably Malta's most significant contribution to rock music. From his early days with The Boys and Cinnamon Hades in Malta to his time with Swiss prog giants Tea and NWOBHM outfit Eazy Money, Storace ultimately found his place with Krokus, who are now celebrating their 50th year in the industry. Since their formation in 1975, Krokus has become synonymous with high-quality, hand-made power rock. With over 15 million records sold worldwide, gold and platinum awards in the USA and Canada, and a Diamond record for selling one million albums in Switzerland, Krokus stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of rock music. As Chris von Rohr, bassist and producer, aptly said, "It's hard to believe, but we celebrate our 50th year of Krokus! We are looking forward to see you live, easy rockers, when long stick goes boom again!" Krokus began as a progressive rock act with their original lead singer, Peter Richard, who left before their debut album. This led to lead guitarist Tommy Kiefer stepping in for the band's self-titled debut. Chris von Rohr, initially the drummer, switched to lead vocals for their second album, "To You All," but it wasn't until Marc Storace joined in 1979 that Krokus found their definitive sound. Storace, formerly of TEA and Eazy Money, brought a powerful voice and charismatic stage presence that helped catapult Krokus to international fame. Their 1980 album "Metal Rendez-vous" was a breakthrough, followed by "Hardware" in 1981, which included hits like "Easy Rocker" and "Rock City." Marc Storace's arrival marked a turning point for Krokus. Inspired by AC/DC's raw energy, the band shifted towards a harder, more rock-driven sound. Storace's robust vocals became the band's signature, propelling them to new heights. The 1983 album "Headhunter" achieved gold status in the U.S. and included the MTV favorite "Screaming in the Night." Throughout the 1980s, Krokus enjoyed considerable success with albums like "One Vice at a Time" and "The Blitz," which featured the hit "Midnite Maniac," making them the first Swiss band to enter the Billboard Hot 100. Despite lineup changes and evolving musical directions, Storace's presence remained a constant driving force behind their success. The band faced numerous challenges, including lineup changes and the tragic death of former guitarist Tommy Kiefer in 1986. However, Krokus continued to produce music and tour, maintaining their reputation as a formidable live act. The 1990s saw a period of fluctuation, but the core of the band persisted, with albums like "Stampede" and "To Rock or Not to Be." In the 2000s, Krokus experienced a resurgence. The release of "Rock the Block" in 2003 and the live album "Fire and Gasoline" in 2004 reaffirmed their place in the rock world. The band's lineup solidified with Storace, von Rohr, and von Arb leading the charge, producing new music and embarking on tours that delighted fans worldwide. In recent years, Krokus has continued to rock stages across the globe. Their 18th studio album, "Big Rocks," released in 2017, featured covers of classic rock songs, paying homage to the bands that influenced them. Despite announcing their retirement in 2018, Krokus planned a farewell tour that was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As of 2024, Krokus is back on the road, celebrating their 50th anniversary. The current lineup includes Marc Storace on lead vocals, Fernando von Arb on lead and rhythm guitars, Chris von Rohr on bass, Mandy Meyer on lead and rhythm guitars, Mark Kohler on rhythm guitars, and Flavio Mezzodi on drums. Marc Storace's contribution to Krokus cannot be overstated. His powerful voice and stage presence have been instrumental in defining the band's sound and success. Joining Krokus in 1979, Storace's tenure has seen the band through its highest peaks and deepest valleys. His commitment to the band and its fans has made him an enduring figure in rock music. As Krokus celebrates half a century of rock, Marc Storace remains a central figure, embodying the spirit and energy that have kept the band alive and thriving. Here's to 50 years of Krokus and the many more moments of rock 'n' roll they will undoubtedly bring. Rock on, Krokus! An in depth interview with Marc Storace was published on melodija.eu on Jul 7, 2023 titled: Marc Storace: The Melodic Journey from Sliema to the World Stage

Final Days for 'Strait Street to Abbey Road' Crowdfunding Campaign The crowdfunding campaign for the documentary "Strait Street to Abbey Road" is in its final days. This film chronicles the life of Tony Carr, born George Caruana in 1927 in Valletta, Malta, whose story exemplifies the transformative power of music and the resilience of the human spirit. The documentary aims to honor Tony’s contributions to popular music and serve as an important historical record. Tony Carr's life is a tale of ambition and perseverance. Growing up in wartime Malta, Tony sought refuge in underground shelters by day and immersed himself in Valletta’s vibrant jazz scene on Strait Street by night. In 1942, he formed one of Malta’s first jazz trios with friends Frank Camilleri and Joe Curmi, mentored by African-American jazz musicians. Despite the limited opportunities in Malta, Tony moved to London to further his career, eventually joining a European tour with Billy Eckstine and becoming a sought-after session drummer. His collaborations include work with legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sixto Rodriguez, Donovan, Alan Price, and Paul McCartney. The documentary requires funding for several key elements. Licensing fees are needed for iconic tracks Tony performed on, like Donovan’s "Sunshine Superman" and Hot Chocolate’s "You Sexy Thing." Additional funds are required for historical footage from sources such as the BBC and Kinomaster, animated sequences depicting scenes from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and new B-roll footage capturing essential visuals. Voice actors will provide narration to bring the story to life, and sound design will ensure comprehensive editing, mixing, and mastering. At 96, Tony’s memories are fading, making this project urgent to document and celebrate his remarkable story. The team behind the documentary includes Ġuże Camilleri, a seasoned drummer and music educator dedicated to preserving early jazz history in Malta; Cedric Vella, a creative filmmaker ensuring the documentary is visually compelling; and David Vella, a producer at Temple Studios Malta, bringing high-quality sound production to the project. This documentary will celebrate Tony and his peers' contributions to music and the Maltese identity, inspiring future generations. Support the project by spreading the word on social media. Every share helps keep Tony Carr's legacy alive. Supporting this documentary means preserving and sharing the rich musical heritage that Tony and his peers helped shape. - "Dream?": Malta's Landmark Rock Opera of 1974
It is a fact that Malta's first rock opera originated in 1974. The press conference held in Sliema at the "Midas" hotel, on July 5th, 1974, marked the launch of Malta's inaugural Rock Opera titled "Dream?" The event, which took place at the Manoel Theatre, was a significant moment for Maltese music history. The following are excerpts of the press release as reported by the day’s press: ‘Three talented young Maltese musicians, David Agius, Joey Chircop, and Anton Grech, all well-known figures in the local rock music scene, unveiled their ambitious project. Scheduled for October, the Rock Opera comprising entirely original compositions by the trio, the production promised to be a groundbreaking endeavor. During the press conference, attendees learned of the stellar lineup of Maltese vocalists set to participate in the Rock Opera. Notable names included the internationally acclaimed Maltese singer Jon Lukas, the frontman of Malta Bums "Bayzo," and Renato, who had recently made waves at Cantasud. Mr. Joey Chircop, one of the masterminds behind the Opera, shared insights into its origins. He revealed that the project's inception dated back to 1970, during the twilight days of the group "Cinnamon Hades". It all started when ‘Frustrated’, was written by Joey Chircop, then the organist of the band “The Boys” (later known as Cinnamon Hades). When the band came to an end in November 1971, Joey decided to concentrate on writing songs. He discussed the idea with Anton Grech, also former guitarist of The Boys and Cinnamon Hades, and they both agreed to work on developing the song into a stage production. David Agius was approached to assist, given his prior collaboration with Joey in composing other songs. Over the course of two years, the thematic material of "Frustrated" underwent extensive development, eventually evolving into the Rock Opera titled "Dream?" or "Din Holma?" in Maltese. The Opera delved into social issues, addressing some of the most pressing concerns of contemporary society during that time. In addition to the principal vocalists, a choir comprising adolescents would accompany the performance, adding depth and resonance to the musical journey. The unveiling of Malta's first Rock Opera marked a pivotal moment in the country's cultural landscape. With its innovative approach and thought-provoking themes, "Dream?" promised to captivate audiences and leave a lasting impact on the Maltese music scene.’ After completing all the music and lyrics, efforts were made to cast singers for each character and recruit friends and family to form a choir. Rehearsals commenced in a garage in Fgura. Simultaneously, arrangements were made to secure a conductor for the music. Maestro Joe Vella, renowned as one of Malta’s most esteemed conductors, was approached for the task. A meeting was organized at his residence in Attard, during which the songwriters outlined their vision. Initially hesitant, Maestro Vella was won over upon hearing excerpts of the musical played on his piano, and he agreed to orchestrate and direct the music. In addition to securing a conductor, the production team needed a director. Given his previous collaborations with TV Director Mario Ascione, Joey suggested approaching him for the role. Mario readily accepted the responsibility, collaborating with Maestro Joe Vella to devise a plan for staging the musical. As announced at the press conference, Jon Lukas was originally approached for the main role. Regrettably, due to prior commitments, he had to withdraw from the production after a few rehearsals. Subsequently, Enzo Gusman was promptly approached to take over the main part, a role he embraced wholeheartedly. At its core, the story line revolves around a young boy who, was marooned on a deserted island after his family’s yacht was shipwrecked. There on the same island he was found by a sailor (Ben), who, he himself, was marooned and alone for so many years before. After twenty years living together, in solitude, Ben passes away, leaving the boy alone. Dreamer was sentenced to remain on the island, never experiencing life with his fellow man. He was a virgin to the world. Here is where the opera begins: ……with the character of Dreamer, kneeling beside Ben’s grave. Overcome with despair, he eventually falls asleep and begins to dream… Dreamer: “I’ve got a picture in my mind of you Ben. I won’t forget you for some time. If ever I will. Or better still, I will keep you in my heart, So, it will never die……… ……At the end Dreamer turns to the Audience and asks: “What can I do? What can I say? Can it be true? What I’ve dreamed here today?” The performances took place on Friday, October 4th, Saturday, October 5th, and Sunday, October 6th, 1974. The attendance varied, with Friday's show filling three-fourths of the venue, Saturday's reaching full capacity, and Sunday's also selling out, with a significant crowd gathering outside hoping to purchase tickets. Regrettably, due to the theatre being fully booked until the end of the year, the production could not be extended. Despite this, the three young composers managed to make a profit of 30 Maltese pounds after covering all expenses. With the singers, choir and dancers generously performing for free, the profit was used to treat all participants to a meal. - Dominic Grech: The Legacy of a Gozitan Music Icon
Dominic Grech was born on the 3 of April 1950 in Victoria, Gozo, and is best remembered as the main singer-songwriter for The Tramps, Gozo's most celebrated pop band. Born and raised in Victoria, Grech showcased his musical talents early on, participating in local festivals and joining his first vocal group, The Rosebells. He later formed a beat group called Gemini 5, which paved the way for his most significant musical venture: founding The Tramps in the mid-60s. The Tramps made their initial studio recordings in 1974 and soon became known for their international tours, performing in countries like Canada and Australia. Dominic Grech composed numerous songs for the band, with "Xemx" and "Għawdex Inti Djamant" standing out as two of the most famous Maltese songs. In the 1970s, The Tramps rose to prominence with their hit song "Xemx," released in 1975 under the Circle label by R. Brizzi. The song's lyrics and music, crafted by Grech, have endured in popularity, becoming the signature tune for the Gozitan television program "Għawdex Illum." The single's B-side featured "Lilek Irrid," with lyrics by Emmanuel Ellis and music by Grech, also featuring the Gozitan singer Spiro Sillato. In 1976, the band released another single, "Kif Qatt Nista" and "Tfulija," under the Canadian label Duke's Town, produced by Jo Debono. Dominic Grech was one of three brothers who played instruments with the Leone Band Club of Victoria. His musical journey began with The Rosebells, where he performed alongside his brother Alfred and friends from the neighborhood. Even in this vocal group, Dominic and Alfred occasionally played their band club instruments. During his student years, Grech formed Gemini 5, a beat group that eventually evolved into The Tramps. Managed by George Said, known as Id-Dias, The Tramps recorded their first studio tracks in 1974 with a lineup that included Grech (lead vocals and guitar), Joe Cassar (keyboards and vocals), Spiro Sillato (vocals and bass guitar), and Carmel Portelli (vocals, drums, and percussions). The Tramps' international tours began in 1974 with performances in Canada, followed by another tour in 1976 and a subsequent tour in Australia in 1981. The band's popularity in Gozo and Malta was unparalleled, with "Xemx" and "Inti Djamant" being among their most successful recordings. "Xemx" remained a beloved song for decades, even performed by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and Ivan Grech at the annual Rockestra with a musical arrangement by Josef Debrincat. While "Inti Djamant" is not officially Gozo's anthem, it is cherished as such by many Gozitans. In 1981, The Tramps won the Festival Internazzjonali tal-Kanzunetta Maltija with "Sinjur Ġib il-Paċi," a song performed during Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Malta in 2010, accompanied by Dominic's sons Richard and Mark. Beyond music, Dominic Grech managed Exotique's Gozo outlet for several years and owned the Arzella restaurant in Marsalforn. He was married to Pauline née Ellis, and they had four sons: George, Richard, Christian, and Mark. The Tramps' last public performance took place in December 2004, continuing their tradition of Christmas gigs in Victoria for about twenty-five years. Dominic's final performance was at the Nazarene Church in Sliema, where he played with his sons Richard and Mark during a prayer meeting. Dominic Grech passed away at 55 years old at the Gozo General Hospital after a prolonged illness. His legacy was celebrated on October 2019 during the Lovin Music Awards ceremony, where The Tramps reunited for a one-night-only performance of "Xemx." Accompanied by Maltese vocalists Federica Falzon, Amber, Claudia Faniello, and Nicole Frendo, the band's iconic track resonated with the audience, enhanced by historical images projected onto large screens. In recognition of Dominic Grech and The Tramps' contributions to Maltese music, Calypso Radio 101.8FM initiated an online petition on March 2, 2020, advocating for the Gozitan group to be honored with Ġieħ ir-Repubblika and for "Inti Djamant" to be officially recognized as the song of Gozo. Dominic Grech's influence on Maltese pop music remains indelible, with his compositions continuing to inspire and unite the Gozitan community. - Press Release - Manatapu
Manatapu Electrifies Farson’s Beer Festival with Powerful Protest Performance At the massive Farson’s Beer Festival last Saturday, local favourites Manatapu delivered an unforgettable performance, culminating in a stirring acoustic rendition of their song "Fini Tal-Progress." This track confronts the urgent issues of rampant over-development in Malta, exposing a tangled web of corruption, greedy developers, and irresponsible decisions that threaten the nation's quality of life. In a dramatic twist, the rest of Manatapu's members returned to the stage during the song, holding placards and a prominent banner emblazoned with "Tizfnu ghad-daqqa tal-izviluppaturi" (You dance to the beat of the developers). This powerful slogan has been a rallying cry for Moviment Graffiti, a group fiercely advocating against the same injustices. “This song was penned a few years ago, but six years later, the problems persist and have only worsened,” shared Dario, the band’s frontman. “We knew it was the perfect time to perform and release it, hoping to ignite action and awareness.” Adding to the impact, Manatapu released a live video of the song, which can be viewed here:https://youtu.be/AwtQdRBlxqQ. - MNAJDRA ........... Maltese history through extreme metal!
A bandcamp.com advert for a band called Mnajdra definitely got my attention. Being a history buff and a lover of metal, my first thought was, how on earth have I missed this Maltese band? Though very rich in history, Malta is a small island right in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and everyone knows anybody else in the local metal community. Curious on how this secret was so well kept I delved further and noticed that the band was based in the United States of America. Having inquired with local guru, DJ Noel Mifsud, who also had no knowledge of Mnajdra, I took it up on myself to contact the band and here is what the band spokesperson had to say: Musically speaking, Mnajdra basically formed from leftover ideas of other projects. I've got a lot of other things I do and ended up with a pile of incomplete songs and parts that didn't seem to fit anywhere else. They were good ideas that I liked quite a bit so I decided to start something new to see where those songs could go and if they could gel together. That's why the first album has a bit of variety in it. The mix of black, death, doom, etc. In terms of the name Mnajdra and the concept of the material, I've visited Malta a few times and absolutely love everything about it. The culture, history, architecture, temples, all of it. Malta has a such a mysterious nature about it that gets overlooked by the bigger and more talked about ancient cultures like Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Vikings, and so on. I thought it would be fun to explore Malta's ancient temple period for lyrical inspiration and sort of fill in the blanks of who the builders may have been and imagining what their gods were like and what the purpose of everything was. Initially it was going to be just a one-off album but it ended up going over incredibly well with the people that heard it. One music writer gave it his album of the year nod which blew my mind. So at that point I figured why not do more? Malta has such a rich history the ideas of where it could go are endless. Ancient Malta's culture of goddess worship is fascinating so I decided to explore that next, hence the second album being titled In the Name of the Goddess. The songs touch on various goddesses and female figures that are associated with the islands either historically or mythologically. The challenge of the second album was actually intentionally writing music from scratch that fits the same sound since there weren't any leftover ideas to pull from again. So in that regard I feel like this new album sounds more consistent with itself since it was written all together with intent. There is one leftover track titled The Lady of Verdala that will pop up somewhere sooner than later. If the second album goes over well and grows the audience then I'd like to think we'll do more. We've worked with Fiadh Productions for CDs and cassettes on both albums but we've yet to land a vinyl deal. The band member identities are being kept anonymous for now to let the project stand on its own. Well, that is quite the story. It makes me think of how for granted, we Maltese, sometimes take our own history. The first album, which is self-titled, includes eight tracks and was released on May 1st, 2023 via Fiadh Productions. It is themed around Malta’s prehistory as the song titles attest: 1. The Worshipping Stones 2. Giantess 3. Under Earth 4. Place of the Echo 5. Disorder 6. Sleeping Lady 7. Illumination 8. Golden Gate of the Ecliptic The album can be found as a digital version and was issued both on cd’s and cassette. On April 5th, 2024 the band released their single ‘Bastion’. This was followed by another single ‘At Earliest Dawn’, released on May 31st, 2024. The second full length album is set to be released on August 9th, 2024. Entitled ‘In the Name of the Goddess’, it will consist of eight tracks, including the singles released earlier this year. 1. Mouth of the Wind 2. Bastion 3. Anna Perenna 4. The Maymuna Stone 5. Oracle Chamber 6. At Earliest Dawn 7. Calypso 8. For the Son of Bat, the King This is another rendering to Maltese history and mythology. It’s a fascinating way to make history known through extreme, yet beautiful music. The magnificent bay of Fomm ir-Riħ; the island’s unassailable bastions, dating back to the period of the Knights of St. John; Anna Perenna and the last track ‘For the Son of Bat, the King’, both have connections to Malta through Virgil’s Aeneid.; the Maymuna Stone, a beautiful 12th century tombstone found in Gozo; the mysterious underground burial place of the Hypogeum , with its magnificent Oracle Chamber; At earliest dawn is a translation of Ogygian (Calypso’s island) and Calypso is all about the nymph, that had her adobe on the island of Gozo. Well, if you want to learn about the fascinating history of Malta and are allergic to books, here is your chance, courtesy of Mnajdra. - Mill-Garaxx: A Pioneering Achievement
Some weeks ago, melodija.eu featured a couple of articles highlighting the illustrious career of Toni Sant and his numerous accomplishments over the years. One of his most significant and enduring achievements is the television program Mill-Garaxx. The following article is derived from a piece written by Toni Sant himself in 2020, reflecting on this groundbreaking program. During the 1980s, live music was a rarity on the sole Maltese television station, Television Malta. While orchestral performances or solo acts accompanied by a piano were common, rock bands performing live were almost nonexistent. Instead, bands would mime their performances to pre-recorded tracks on popular shows like TeleDisco, Sibtijiet Flimkien, Bonġu Malta, and Arzella. When Toni Sant began working at Xandir Malta and producing programs regularly for Radju Malta, he frequently discussed with his friend Mario Ellul the possibility of introducing live rock music to Television Malta studios. Sant and Ellul had known each other since their days at the New Lyceum, where they both studied Maltese, English, and Philosophy. Mario Ellul had joined TeleMalta before Sant with an aim to work with Television Malta where he eventually became a director and producer of various programs. Ellul was also the lead singer of Fog, a popular band among university students. Sant, too, was active in the music scene, performing with bands like Structure and Artwork in the 1980s. He later joined what remained of Fog in the early 1990s, primarily for theatrical productions by the MADC. Together with colleagues Ray Bajada and Alfie Fabri, Sant and Ellul began designing a television series named Mill-Garaxx. However, shortly after commencing work on the series, Bajada and Fabri were suspended from all Xandir Malta programs due to a controversial radio program they produced that discussed personal cannabis use with language deemed inappropriate for broadcasting at the time. Despite this setback, Sant and Ellul, as regular employees of Xandir Malta, continued developing the Mill-Garaxx program with a different team. They privately supported Bajada and Fabri, despite the taboo nature of the subject at the time. The leaders of Maltese society were far more hypocritical back then, and censorship was much stronger, even though there was a push towards modernity and progressiveness in certain aspects. The primary goal of Mill-Garaxx was to feature musicians playing rock live in the Television Malta studio in Gwardamangia. However, the program also incorporated regular discussions about societal issues in Malta. These discussions, necessary in a politically charged environment, were conducted with great seriousness and balance by Joseph Debono, who later gained fame as a comic and satirical character on Xarabank. Thanks to Debono's handling, the program avoided trouble despite its controversial topics. Mill-Garaxx lasted only about three months. A year later, Sant and his team produced another series, Mill-Garaxx 2, which revisited the musicians from the first series to see their progress. Bands featured in the Mill-Garaxx series included Acid, Big Foot, Ivory Cross, Freeway, The Ophidian Twin, Men and White, Flying Alligators, Catch 22, Fallout, and Winter Moods with Mark Doneo as the singer. Aidan Zammit Lupi also performed live solo, and Sant himself sang live with a group of musicians including Antoine Bonnici Soler (piano), Philip Fenech (guitar), Joe Carr (percussion and vocals), Walter Vella (saxophone), Gino Mifsud (electric bass), and Louis Naudi (drums). Tragically, Mifsud, Naudi, and Ellul passed away at a young age, and Sant fondly remembers them regularly. Reflecting on the program, Sant acknowledges that much of the material was relatively ordinary in quality. Nostalgia often enhances the perception of their work, making it seem better than it might have been at the time. However, what Sant cherishes most from the Mill-Garaxx series is not the live music but the opening theme music by Charles Dalli and the digital graphics created with Chris Agius and Mike Rizzo. In one of the earliest attempts at Maltese rap, Charlie Dalli penned a verse that Sant considers one of the most beautiful in Maltese popular music: "How beautiful is that dream of one day touching the stars, but all value disappears if everything I touch turns to gold."

Dean Montanaro, a dynamic and versatile musician, has carved a niche for himself in the world of jazz and beyond. - Atlam and V-Gile: The Dual Legacy of Maltese Rock and Pop
Atlam, was formed in 1978 by Charles Saliba and his twin brothers, Lizio and Stephen Saliba, in their hometown of Ħaż-Żabbar. Initially, the band performed at local events, gradually expanding their repertoire and influence. With the addition of their cousin, Charles Galea, the band's lineup solidified: Charles on guitars and vocals, Lizio on bass and backing vocals, Stephen on drums, and Charlie on keyboards and backing vocals. Atlam's music was deeply influenced by the rock and roll and pop sounds of the 1960s. Their performances featured covers of iconic bands such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The Shadows. This homage to the sixties helped them build a local fan-base, playing almost every weekend at weddings, bars, and community events. The band began to compose their own material, with most songs written by Charles and Lizio, and contributions from the other members. Their first record, F’Imħabba w fis-Sliem, was recorded at LJR Studio in Żabbar. Inspired by their friend Tony Mugliette, they transformed their practice space into a recording studio. During this time, they recorded several tracks, including Atlam (an instrumental), Kemm Nixtieq, Ninsab il-bogħod, Lilek Irrid, Ġrajja ta’ Sajjied, and Tfajla ta’ qalbi. These songs, reflecting their sixties rock and ballad influences, were released on a cassette titled Imħabba w Sliem around 1982. As their musical style evolved, Atlam began experimenting with harder rock sounds influenced by bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin. This shift was marked by the addition of Tony Mugliette as a vocalist, transforming Atlam into a rock band. Their new style debuted at a three-day rock festival at il-Marsa grounds, followed by a performance at the Ta’ Qali Music Festival. Songs like The End of the World, Ghost Rider, and Desperate Life became staples in their set-list. The departure of Tony Mugliette led to the recruitment of Silvio Bonnici, whose high-pitched vocals inspired new compositions. Atlam's cover versions of Led Zeppelin and their medley Stars of Sabbath, featuring Black Sabbath hits, became crowd favorites. The band's lineup at this time included Silvio Bonnici on vocals, Charles Galea on keyboards, Lizio Saliba on bass and backing vocals, Stephen Saliba on drums, and Charles Saliba on guitars and backing vocals. Their most memorable concert occurred on July 9, 1983, during a Rokarja AST gig at the Tigne Chapel, where Stars on Sabbath had to be performed three times due to popular demand. To differentiate between their commercial pop side and their rock persona, the band adopted a dual identity. They continued to perform as Atlam for weddings and other events while their rock performances were under the name V-Gile, with Ralph Camilleri as their manager. V-Gile's first notable performance was a Rock Mass at The Stones Discotheque, featuring music composed by Charles Saliba and lyrics by Josette Micallef. This mass was also performed at the Birkirkara Parish Church. Parallel to their performances, V-Gile worked on a rock opera titled Victims, written by Lawrence Micallef. The opera, which aimed to raise awareness about drug abuse, was partially performed at various cultural events but never fully staged due to production challenges. Despite attempts to collaborate with Caritas, disagreements over the opera's title halted its full realisation. The band's lineup saw changes over the years, with Anton Scicluna replacing Lizio on bass and Edward Mifsud joining on guitars and vocals. Charles Galea left the band due to work commitments. Atlam continued to perform at venues like Jerma Palace and Corinthia, with a consistent presence at an open-air restaurant in Rabat. From 1995 onwards, performances by Atlam and V-Gile became occasional, with Charles and Stephen remaining the core members. Charles kept the band's legacy alive, performing in Libya and notably headlining a concert for the Commonwealth countries in 2009 alongside German and British bands. Atlam participated in tribute concerts, including “Ir-Rock It-Tajjeb” in 2016 and a performance at SixteenSeven Sports Bar & Grill in 2019. Their journey from a local band playing sixties covers to a prominent rock act reflects their adaptability and enduring appeal, cementing their place in Malta's musical history. - Eyes to Argus Release New Album ‘Reroot’ – Press Release
Atmospheric indie band Eyes to Argus have just released their third full-length album, Reroot (official release date: 19th July) and it’s available to stream on all streaming services. Once more, Eyes to Argus worked with record label Post. Recordings (Indianapolis, US) and the album was pressed on vinyl as a limited run, which is available through Bandcamp. On Reroot, Eyes to Argus have a different energy compared to their 2021 album, in habit. The songs are more charged, more concise, and catchier than ever before. Yet, this is still an Eyes to Argus album through and through, and the band’s signature take on indie, shoegaze, and post-rock is on full display. Reroot is about the trajectory of entering a new decade and getting used to the way it feels. It’s about moving into the next phase of your life with newfound energy and drive, all the while grappling with inevitable fatigue and burnout along the way. It’s the same state of flux that Eyes to Argus went through when they wrote and recorded Reroot, with all members either traversing or fast approaching their thirties and coming face to face with the whirlwind of experiences that this brings – building new families, finding new homes, losing loved ones, and welcoming new life into the world. Prior to the full album release, Eyes to Argus dropped two singles from Reroot – Bloodstream Waterfall Cannonball, which was featured on WherePostRockDwells, and Your Piece. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eqZtG7bpTo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0YR7vjkXFA Bloodstream Waterfall Cannonball is the opening track on Reroot, setting the tone of the album with an affirmative energy that waxes and wanes until the closing track Lifelift, which discovers affirmation beyond the self through the cycle of life, death, and life again. The artwork for Reroot was created by Samwel Mallia using photographic elements by Elisa von Brockdorff and textures from Sam Falzon (Bainmarie). The vinyl release includes an exclusive map of the World of Reroot – featuring terrain, landmarks, and characters inspired by the themes and lyrics on the album. As part of the album’s release cycle, Eyes to Argus are currently playing a run of shows along the Midwest, concluding with a festival appearance on the 27th of July at Post. Festival (Indianapolis), which this year features monumental names in the post-rock scene such as This Willl Destroy You, Caspian, And So I Watch You From Afar, The Ocean, If These Trees Could Talk, and many more. - Rock Moods ……………Fifteen solid years on ONE Radio.
Longevity of radio programmes, dedicated to rock and/or metal in Malta, is not the rarest of occurrences, as some programmes have graced the air for quite a few years. Such as the now defunct Grinta, on air for 18 years, Rock Express on air for more than 22 years, both brainchildren of Brian Micallef and Rockna, hosted by Michael Bugeja, on air for the 14 years this year (2024), just to mention a few. Rock Moods, hosted by Noel Mifsud, will be reaching the 15-year milestone of airing on ONE Radio. The programme was the brainchild of Joe Tanti and aired for a few years on Bay Radio prior to the DJ moving to ONE Radio in 2009. Marc, the son of Joe Tanti, co-hosted the show. Noel Mifsud was asked to be part of the programme as soon as it started airing on One Radio. Documentary Celebrates the Legacy of Tony Carr For several years, Ġuże Camilleri has been dedicated to documenting the life and contributions of Tony Carr, aiming to preserve his memory through a comprehensive film project. This effort has gradually culminated in a documentary that promises to be both entertaining and inspirational. Tony Carr's remarkable ability to adapt his musical style—from jazz to rock and theatre to film—serves as a powerful testament to resilience and creativity. This narrative extends beyond Carr himself, encompassing the many people and places that have influenced his journey, highlighting the countless other stories worth remembering. As the campaign to support this documentary approaches its final days, there is a call for the community to come together in celebrating Tony Carr’s legacy. His story exemplifies the profound impact of music and the enduring human spirit, ensuring that his contributions to popular music are recognized and preserved as an essential part of history. Born George Caruana in 1927 in Valletta, Malta, Tony Carr’s life is one of ambition and resilience. The documentary aims to safeguard his fading legacy while also acknowledging the significant contributions of his peers, who are integral to Malta's cultural history. During World War II in 1942, a young Tony found refuge in underground shelters by day and immersed himself in the vibrant jazz scene of Valletta’s Strait Street by night. Alongside friends Frank Camilleri and Joe Curmi, he formed one of Malta's first jazz trios, guided by stranded African-American jazz musicians who helped him develop his drumming skills and passion for Bebop. Seeking greater opportunities, Tony eventually moved to London to further his musical career. In London, he faced intense competition and took on various jobs to support himself. His perseverance led to a breakthrough when he joined a European tour with the internationally acclaimed Billy Eckstine, which established him as a sought-after session drummer in London's contemporary music scene. By the 1960s, he had become the preferred session drummer for renowned pianist and conductor John Cameron, adapting to the evolving music landscape and collaborating with legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Sixto Rodriguez, Donovan, Alan Price, and Paul McCartney. Despite these significant contributions, Tony's impact remains largely unrecognized in Malta. The documentary requires funding to cover various essential aspects, including licensing fees for iconic tracks like Donovan’s "Sunshine Superman," historical footage, animated sequences that authentically depict the 50s, 60s, and 70s, new B-roll footage, voice actors for narration, and comprehensive sound design. Given Tony's age of 96, the urgency of this project is paramount to ensure his remarkable story is properly documented and celebrated. The dedicated team behind the project includes Ġuže Camilleri, a seasoned drummer and music educator who has devoted years to researching Tony's story; Cedric Vella, a creative filmmaker focused on engaging visual storytelling; and David Vella, a producer at Temple Studios Malta known for his high-quality sound production. This documentary aims to preserve the contributions of Tony and his peers to music and Maltese identity while inspiring future generations. Supporters are encouraged to spread the word on social media, as each share helps keep Tony Carr's legacy alive. By backing this documentary, individuals contribute to preserving and sharing the rich musical heritage shaped by Tony and his contemporaries. More information about the project can be found on gogetfunding.com.
- The Journey of Ray Caruana: From Malta to Eurovision Fame and Beyond
Ray Caruana's life is a compelling story of musical talent, personal battles, and unwavering determination. Born in Malta, Ray moved to the UK at the age of five. As the son of a professional singer, his musical journey began early. By the age of 12, he had already made history as the youngest performer to appear at the London Palladium for "Night of a 1,000 Stars." This early exposure to music set the stage for a career that would see him perform with orchestras and even lead him to the Eurovision stage. Early Life and Musical Beginnings Ray's father, an opera singer, recognised his son's potential and began training him from a young age. "He said that you can sing, and he started training me at the age of five and that went through till I was 16 years old and always with big orchestras, that's why I got a liking for live musicians," Ray recounted in an interview with ESCBubble's Matt in August 2021. This early start fostered a deep appreciation for live music, which would become a hallmark of Ray's performances. Eurovision and Live Report In the late 1980s, Ray became the lead vocalist for Live Report, a band initially called Midnight Blue. The group included talented musicians such as John Beeby, Brian Hodgson, Maggie Jay, Mike Bell, and Peter May. Hodgson, a former member of the UK pop group Matchbox, brought significant experience to the band, having written many hits. Live Report's big break came in 1989 when they competed in the BBC Television's "A Song for Europe" contest with the song "Why Do I Always Get it Wrong?". The song, initially titled "No More Sad Songs," garnered an impressive 111,996 votes, far surpassing the runner-up's 51,449 votes. This victory earned them the right to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in Lausanne, where they finished a close second to Yugoslavia's entry "Rock Me" by Riva. A Battle Against Heroin The success of Eurovision was not the only significant chapter in Ray's life. The 1970s saw him living a life of excess, characterised by substantial earnings, luxury living, and a dangerous addiction to heroin. "Yeah, I had bundles of cash," Ray reminisced in an interview with Jane O'Connell. His addiction spanned 11 years and drained his finances. However, in 1981, Ray made the life-changing decision to quit heroin cold turkey, a feat he describes as "no big deal, like having the flu for a month." Family and Advocacy Ray's personal life took a positive turn when he met Pauline, who would become his wife. Together, they have a son, Cesare, who was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, a condition related to mild autism. Ray's dedication to his son is unwavering, and he has channelled his tenacity into advocating for children with similar conditions. He joined PACT (Parents of Autistic Children Together) and has been actively raising funds and awareness for the organisation. Ray's approach to his son's condition is pragmatic and protective. "If his son has a tantrum and is stared at by passers-by, he will confront the onlooker. 'I say to them: He has a problem. What's yours?'," he stated, highlighting his intolerance for judgemental attitudes. Continued Musical Pursuits Despite the challenges, Ray has never strayed far from music. He even participated in the Maltese heat of the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest with "Scarlet Song," where he finished second. Until a few years ago Ray remained open to the idea of returning to Eurovision, albeit representing a country other than the UK due to past conflicts with the BBC and record companies. Ray Caruana's journey is a testament to resilience and passion. From his early days in Malta to the heights of Eurovision fame, through personal battles and advocacy for his son, Ray's story is one of overcoming adversity and staying true to one's roots. Now in his seventies, Ray continues to inspire with his music and his dedication to family.

- The Rifffs - press release
The Rifffs are back to talk about Modern Society The Rifffs are back ! Originally formed in 1979, The Rifffs managed to capture the imagination of the Maltese youth culture of that time by actively performing around the Island as well as securing a record deal with a UK independent record company, 'Alternative Music’. This culminated in the release of one of the most influential Maltese records of the early 80s, ‘Dance Music for the 80’s Depression’ which is still a local favourite till this day. Fast forward 45 years , the band are still treating their fans to exiting news. Following their return to the music scene with two full length music albums ‘Moonstomp’ and ‘Can’t Stop the People’ as well as a string of singles including a featured track with the legendary Neville Staple from The Specials, the Rifffs are back with a new single called ‘Modern Society’. Front man of the Rifffs , Ray Mercieca explained “It’s almost like we are time travelers from a different time yet we are not. We are still part of this modern society struggling to fit in. Our song modern society is just a window of what some of us see in everyday life. Some good but a lot of bad and terrible sadness. Modern society is it imitation or reality ? is it fake political insanity ? Our world is ever changing extremely fast, but the one thing we are sure of is that one day we will all be saying Goodbye to this world.” The Rifffs aren’t only part of Malta’s music legacy, they are a testament of perseverance through the different trends and time, yet remain to be as relevant and fresh till this day. This is quite an achievement for any band let alone a local act. Besides being pioneers of ska music in Malta, the band are also known and respected outside our shores amongst current Ska bands and often referred to as the legendary Rifffs featuring in various compilations. ‘It was an absolute pleasure working on the new songs in the recording studio and now I can’t wait for everyone to hear them. I’ve been working with Ray Mercieca, lead singer and song-writer for The Rifffs as well as ‘The characters’ fame, for nearly 30 years. We have a chemistry in the studio and having produced the other 2 albums I can honestly say this is some of best work from the Rifffs. The band and current line up are on fire. Ray’s voice is in top form and the songs he’s writing are pure music gems.” said music producer Howard Keith from Jagged House Music Company. The new single ‘Modern Society’ will be accompanied by a music video which was directed by Matthew James and filmed by Ricky Bugeja and Matthew James. The video contrasts the old ways with the new ways, appreciating the pros of both realities while being aware of the cons. Matthew James, who’s also an integral part of the Rifffs both as a performer as well as a creative, added “A special thanks goes to Ivy House for providing the great cinematic venue as well as the audience and Rifffs fans, some of whom can be seen in the music video. ’ The Rifffs are currently working on their 3 rd album and will not be performing as yet . They are currently preparing more singles to follow as well as the new album which will coincide with touring again in prestigious festivals in Europe as they’ve done already in previous years.
