The album comprises 12 original tracks that showcase the band's distinctive blend of blues, soul, funk, and rock. Notable songs include "Seventeen Suits," "Amsterdam," and "Same Old Mistakes," each highlighting the group's dynamic rhythms and compelling guitar work. Running for approximately 34 minutes, "Alka" takes listeners on a meditative yet vibrant experience, blending traditional instruments with modern production techniques. Listen Here X-Tend - 1984–2024 Owen Leuellen - Out of the Darkness Electronic A Lily - Saru l-Qamar A Lily's album "Saru l-Qamar," released on April 5, 2024, is a poignant exploration of Maltese emigrant experiences, blending archival recordings with ambient compositions. The project was inspired by historical practices where Maltese families received reel tapes from relatives abroad, often featuring traditional għana songs and personal messages. Through collaboration with Malta's nonprofit heritage foundation Magna Żmien, A Lily (James Vella) accessed these archival tapes and crafted new musical works in response. The album's nine tracks, totaling approximately 38 minutes, include pieces like "Żeżina Ddoqq is-Sħab" and "Ħajti Kollha, Qalbi," which intertwine storytelling with hardware synthesis to create a dreamlike, nostalgic atmosphere. "Saru l-Qamar" is available for streaming on platforms such as Apple Music and Spotify, and can be purchased through Bandcamp. Listen Here Acidulant - Let's go Melchior Sultana - Underground Metal Storace - Crossfire Marc Storace, renowned for his tenure as the lead vocalist of Krokus, released his second solo album, "Crossfire," on November 22, 2024, under the moniker STORACE. The album comprises 12 tracks, including "Screaming Demon," "The New Unity," and "Rock This City," encapsulating a blend of hard rock anthems characterized by powerful choruses and dynamic guitar riffs. Produced by Tommy Henriksen, known for his work with Alice Cooper, and mixed by award-winning engineer Olle Romo, "Crossfire" delivers a robust hard rock experience. The album is a deeply introspective collection of 11 tracks, reflecting themes of resilience, personal growth, and the complexities of modern life. Songs like "Teatime" and "Mad Race" showcase the band’s hallmark lyrical vulnerability, accompanied by rich acoustic arrangements and heartfelt vocals. The album strikes a balance between melancholic ballads and uplifting melodies, capturing the essence of Chasing Pandora's storytelling style that first won them acclaim in the mid-2000s. Their earlier works, characterized by intimate performances and poignant lyrics, have earned them a loyal following both locally and internationally. 3Ts – a teatime concert with SCJ Soloists Schola Cantorum Jubilate, in collaboration with the Malta Trust Foundation, presents 3Ts – Tea, Tunes, Togetherness!  It promises to be a tuneful afternoon bringing people together for a freshly brewed cup of tea with treats and different forms of art. Music, art, literature and the rural backdrop will join together for a good cause since all proceeds will go to the Malta Trust Foundation. The Malta Trust Foundation, chaired by H.E. President Emeritus Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, is committed to sustainable solutions addressing poverty and vulnerability. Its work focuses on key areas such as disability, mental health and wellbeing, education (both formal and non-formal) and youth empowerment. The Foundation continually invests in resources to ensure tangible results. SCJ Soloists – Marouska Attard, Hannah Tong, Bianca Simone and James Agius – will perform a jovial repertoire, filled with moments of soaring drama, ease and capriciousness. This is the first concert of a year-long celebration marking the 25th anniversary of SCJ. The programme includes pieces by Donizetti, Rossini, Bizet, Tosti, Head and the late Prof. Joe Vella. The concert will conclude with a special arrangement of local works by composer-in-residence Paul Portelli. Philip Rokarja Pace, a prominent figure in Malta's rock music scene, passed away alone at his home in Ħaż-Żebbuġ following a heart attack on January 28, 2024. He was 69 years old, born on June 9, 1954. His body remained in the mortuary at Mater Dei Hospital until October 16, 2024, as no one came forward to organize his funeral. Ultimately, he was laid to rest by the Government in a communal grave at Addolorata Cemetery, East Division EA-A-548. Sadly, there is no marker on the grave to indicate his final resting place. Next week will mark the first anniversary of his passing.* Philip Pace’s contributions to Malta’s music community were both foundational and transformative, particularly during the vibrant rock era of the 1980s. Prior to his involvement with ROKARJA  and his prominent years with the Tigné Barracks scene, Philip honed his skills as a DJ and sound engineer. His technical expertise and passion for music laid the groundwork for the role he would later play in shaping the Maltese rock scene. A dedicated supporter and active promoter of local music, he played an instrumental role in the development of the Maltese rock movement, with a special focus on the Tigné Barracks venue, which became a hub for emerging bands. From 1982 to 1984, he worked tirelessly behind the scenes, organizing concerts, providing technical support, and encouraging bands to evolve creatively. He was deeply involved in the creation of ROKARJA , a movement that was central to Malta’s music scene during that period. In addition to his efforts in promoting local talent, Philip was well-known for his sound engineering skills and his commitment to ensuring that concerts and events ran smoothly. He played an essential role in the success of multiple gigs, including the historic Nazareth concert at Tigné and the seminal performances held at the Tigné Chapel and open-air concert spaces. His expertise in sound and lighting made him a trusted collaborator for several bands for whom he provided technical support. His contributions went far beyond the stage, offering guidance and mentorship to young musicians, always encouraging them to pursue professionalism and continually improve. December 3, 1983, when Maltese Rock and Pop music was officially integrated into Maltese culture. Philip’s passion for music was not limited to live performances. He was a lifelong enthusiast of David Bowie  and The Beatles , developing a deep knowledge and appreciation of their work. His collection of Beatles  memorabilia was legendary, though a devastating fire tragically destroyed much of it. Despite this loss, Philip’s love for the music remained undiminished, and he continued to support and promote the genre with undying fervour. In 2023, Philip spoke with fellow music enthusiast Eric Montfort for an interview on Fuzzbox , where they discussed Bowie’s iconic albums from the 1970s and '80s. Even in his later years, he maintained his status as an expert and a guide for those exploring rock music, both local and international. His humble, down-to-earth personality made him beloved not only by musicians but also by fans, who knew him as a dedicated supporter who lived and breathed the music scene. His role in advancing the Maltese music scene culminated in the official inclusion of rock and pop music in the national cultural agenda in 1983, cementing his place in the history of the nation’s musical evolution. Philip is remembered not only for his professional contributions but also for his deep personal connections with those he worked with. As Ray Schembri (X-Vandals) poignantly recalled, "Philip always had the right advice on how to develop the bands and approach professionalism, even when we didn’t realize it at the time." His passing marks the end of an era for Malta’s music community, but his legacy lives on in the many bands he helped, the memories he created, and the culture he helped build. Philip’s work, passion, and dedication to the Maltese music scene will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Philip. Thank you for your tireless dedication and your unwavering belief in the power of music to bring people together. Your legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians. During pre-production, led by Claudio, the band produced detailed demos that acted as blueprints, refining arrangements and experimenting with additional instrumentation and effects. Recording took place at SpineSplitter Studio under the guidance of David Depasquale, whose expertise in mixing and mastering brought a polished yet raw quality to the sound, encapsulating the album’s essence. The visual aspects were equally deliberate, with Claudio collaborating with Bjorgvin from MetalCover.art to design artwork that complements the album’s themes. The soundtrack became essential in conveying each species’ story: wonderment for the rare weasel (‘“Ballottra’”) and sadness for the endangered Maltese freshwater crab (“Qabru”).  The first series, now completed, and already domestically broadcast, Natura Maltija is to expand its reach., with plans to make the series internationally available across online media platforms, with newly added English language subtitles.  The second series of Natura Maltija will be integrated into the local education system via the Maltese Ministry of Education, helping to promote nature education among students and foster a long lasting awareness of Malta's biodiversity. About Robert Farrugia Robert Farrugia is a dynamic and continually evolving ambient artist whose palette has, over years of releasing solo music, grown to touch on  drone, neoclassical, downtempo, and IDM. "Watching The Music" is a notable CD compilation that showcases the vibrant Maltese music scene of the early 1990s. Produced and released by Radio 101 in 1992, the album features ten tracks, with two songs each from five prominent Maltese bands: E-Zee Way Out, No Strings Attached, Brainstorm, Acid, and Bigfoot. This compilation was a spin-off from a radio show about the Maltese music scene, hosted by John Bundy. Reflecting on the project's origins, Bondi wrote: "Shortly after launching RADIO 101 in 1991 we started airing a programme on Maltese bands. Week after week we met a lot of intelligent and talented musicians who were edging to take the music scene by storm. We liked what we heard and wanted to capture their sounds on CD. English writer and philologist John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892 – 1973). History tends to repeat itself. In the 1990’s fantasy author J.K. Rowling set pen to paper, or fingers to keys, to write some bedtime stories for her children. The rest is history. Her seven books concerning Harry Potter sold millions of copies and were turned into a very successful film series by Warner Bros. Pictures. There is nothing new under the sun, this was done before by the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien when between 1937 and 1949 he wrote The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The books and gained a cult following and were turned into a film trilogy by Peter Jackson. In short the books narrate how the Rings of Power that were given to men, dwarves and elves ended up forged into One Ring by the main antagonist Sauron, the Dark Lord, in order to allow him to rule over all. In a quest to destroy this ring and bring down Sauron, hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin, set out from the Sire with this mission in mind. Guided by Gandalf the Company of the Ring is formed in order to rally all factions to aid the Free Peoples of Middle-Earth against Sauron’s armies. Men are represented by Aragon and Boromir, the elves by Legolas and the dwarves by Gimli. Frodo has to fight a personal battle against the power exerted by the ring as he fights to accomplish the feat of destroying it in the fires of Mount Doom. Well, this is a very simplistic approach of telling the tale. It’s basically another take at describing in a fantastic way the battle between good and evil and the triumph of the former. I’m sure most of you have seen the films. Try your hand at reading the books. It’s a feat in itself, but truly worth your time. Mysticism, fantasy and doomy Mordor were the perfect fodder for a heavy metal fire. Lord of the Rings books have directly and indirectly influenced innumerable bands and artists, here are a few metal bands that have taken this story at heart. The song ‘The Wizard’ on Black Sabbath ’s self-titled debut album was inspired by Gandalf. Geezer Butler was reading Lord of the Rings at the time and loosely based the lyrics to reflect the wizard ………. and allegedly the provider of narcotics who supplied the band with his ‘magic’ potions. “Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul/ ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum -ishi krimpatul.” J.R.R. Tolkien went into such detail as creating fictional languages for the different races. Translated from the Black Speech spoken in Mordor this phrase would mean, “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them / One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.” Varg Vikerns got the inspiration for the name of his black metal project Burzum from Tolkien. This should come as no surprise as his first band was named Uruk-Hai, with reference to the Orcs in Mordor. Also his pseudonym Count Grishnackh is a reference to the captain of the Orcs Grishnákh. Norwegian black mettalers Dimmu Borgir are more subtle in their approach but without a doubt their frontman’s namesake Shagrath is a play of words on the orc captain of Cirith Ungol, Shagrat. Not to be left out of the most epic battle of all times, Swedish power metal band Sabaton included the track ‘Shadows’ in their 2007 album ‘Metalizeris.’ This song is about the army of Sauron, the Dark Lord of Mordor. “Facing the wind as they ride through the sky Shadows of Mordor black horses they fly Black Shadow King, find the ring Search for the Halfling you lords of the dark The hobbit with Sauron's ring he is your mark Unholy light, in the night Black Knights of Sauron You're made of iron Black shadows of Mordor Wield one-eyed shields Unholy ring wraiths with armor of steel Kings of the past to no one you kneel Hearts filled with hate, that's your fate Facing the wind as they ride through the sky Shadows of Mordor black horses they fly Ride Shadow King, find the ring.” Led Zeppelin also make references to Lord of the Rings for example in songs such as ‘Misty Mountain Hop’, referring to the Misty Mountains and ‘The Battle of Evermore’ and ‘Ramble On’, to name a few. Contrary to popular belief one of their most popular tracks ‘Stairway to Heaven’ is not Tolkien inspired. Not the same can be said on Megadeth ’s ‘This Day We Fight’ from their 2009 album ‘Endgame.’ Dave Mustaine had Aragon’s battle speech from The Return of the King when he penned down the lyrics. “...I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the Age of Men comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight !” It is not a secret that former Rush  drummer Neil Peart  (1952 – 2020) was into literature, including the epic Tolkien works.  He incorporated Lord of the Rings themes into Rush songs such as ‘Rivendell’ (1975), named after the Elven city.  A year later he penned ‘The Necromancer’, which is a reference to a nickname Gandalf coined for Sauron in The Hobbit.  This musical opus comes in three parts, just like the novel.   Another band that have their namesake inspired by Lord of the Rings are the Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth .   Their name translates to ‘hill of doom’, which is another name for Orodruin, the volcanic ‘Mount Doom.’   Another band named after a landscape from Lord of the Rings is Gorgoroth , who get their inspiration form The Plateau of Gorgoroth, which is a wasteland of volcanic ash in the heart of Mordor.  The place where Sauron’s army waits for commands to attack any potential intruders.  There are a multitude of other bands that have been inspired by Tolkien and his works, but none will outdo German power metal band Blind Guardian in their devotion.   Not only do we find numerous references in their songs, but taking it a step further, the band even based a concept album based on the tales by Tolkien.   Their sixth studio album, ‘Nightfall in Middle-Earth’, released in 1998, is based upon The Silmarillion, a book from the First Age of Middle-earth, recounting the troubled history of Beleriand, as the Elves battle the Dark Lord Morgoth.  Apart from the songs the album includes narrated parts of the story.  Rumors were milling that the Blind Guardian were to provide the score for the film series, but this never materialized.    All that remains is for you to create a playlist of Tolkien inspired metal songs and pay homage to the one who ruled they all by reading his books.  Let the adventure begin!

Sonic Storm Parts Ways with Guitarist Miguel Ángel Sarmiento photo: Rachel Mifsud Thrash metal band Sonic Storm has announced a major lineup change, parting ways with guitarist Miguel Ángel Sarmiento. The decision, shared in a heartfelt Facebook post on January 4, was described as “entirely amicable” and rooted in logistical challenges. In their statement, the band wrote: "After much thought, we have taken the difficult decision to part ways with our guitarist, Miguel Ángel Sarmiento. This is an entirely amicable split as it is mainly due to logistical reasons. Miguel has been an amazing part of our journey, bringing his unique energy to the stage and countless laughs to our rehearsals. We’re incredibly grateful for his contributions and the memories we’ve created together. Looking ahead, we’ve decided not to seek a replacement as instead, we’ll be returning to our roots as a three-piece thrash ensemble — the way we originally envisioned this band. We wish Miguel nothing but the best in his personal life and with his other bands. He’ll always be a part of the Sonic Storm family, and we’re excited to see what he accomplishes next. Haine , Malta’s premier deathcore band, has dropped the music video for "Blood Moon," the second single from their upcoming full-length album, Fertile Void , following the release of "The Lake (feat. When John was exiled to Patmos and started to scribble down his annotations for what was to become the Book of Revelation or Apocalypse, little could he imagine that he was creating a thematic paradise for heavy metal lyrics. These are some of the topics he brought into being: whore of Babylon, Beast of Revelation, Abbadon, the four horsemen of the apocalypse, Jezebel, Balaam, destruction, Wormwood (the star), angels, elders, the chosen ones, the number of the beast, keys of death and hades, the book of life, new Jerusalem, scroll with seven seals, four living creatures, day of wrath, seven churches, seals, horns and eyes, dragons, serpents and all the rest. I bet you get the gist by now. These themes have been used and abused since heavy metal came into being as they make excellent themes. By all means, this is not an exhaustive list of songs or albums inspired by this book, but just the tip of the iceberg. “Woe to you, oh earth and sea For the Devil sends the beast with wrath Because he knows the time is short Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast For it is a human number Its number is six hundred and sixty-six.” One of the most famous takes is centrally Iron Maiden’s song ‘The Number of the Beast’. The title track, penned by Steve Harris, from the album bearing the same name, was released in 1982 and is still one of the fan favourites. The song was inspired by a nightmare, Harris had, after watching the film Damien: Omen II. “Tam o’Shanter”, a poem by Robert Burns is also quoted as an inspiration. The lyrics open by quotes from Revelation 12:12 and 13:18, read out by English actor Barry Clayton. When released it stirred up a controversy due to the subject involved. Iron Maiden where falsely accused of being Satanic, like many other bands before and after them. This is not the only reference from the book in Iron Maiden songs. Another example is ‘Moonchild’, from their album ‘Seventh Son of the Seventh Son’ (1988). Another band inspired by Revelation were Metallica, who in their album Kill‘Em All (1984), included a track entitled ‘The Four Horseman.’ The riders are mentioned also in songs by Onslaught (‘Let There be Death’), Count Raven (‘The Coming’), Saracen (‘Horsemen of the Apocalypse’), Savatage (‘Devastation’), Tormentor (‘Apocalypse’), Cruel Force (‘Under the Sign of the Moon’) and many more. “And when the lamb opened the seventh seal There was in heaven a silence Seven angels, seven trumpets Preparing to sound God has sent his punishment over us We shall all perish in the blackest death” This is how the lyrics from ‘Seven Angels, Seven Trumpets’ by Marduk begin, inspired by Chapter 8 verses 1-2 and 6. This song can be found on their album ‘Plague Angel’ (2004), another reference from the book. In 1983, Manowar gave us ‘Revelation (Death’s Angel), as part of their album ‘Into Glory Ride.’ On their second album ‘Too Late to Pray’ (1987), Tyrant, hailing from the U.S.A. give us ‘Beginning of the End,’ with lyrics based on many apocalyptic themes. “A new time has come A new time is here “The one from the pit has risen And soon he'll make us fear This is the time, yeah, this is the time Now listen to this song I'm gonna tell You a little story Foretold by the prophet John.” Count Raven let us make no mistake on where they got the inspiration for their song ‘True Revelation.’ This is to be found in their album ‘Strom Warning,’ released in 1990. A reference to the four horsemen can also be found in ‘Standing on the Sun’ by Internal Void. This track form part of their album bearing the same name, released in 1993. Agent Steel, on their album ‘Skeptics Apocalypse’ (1985), give us another referral with their songs ‘Back to Reign’ and ‘144,000 Gone.’ A reference to the beast upon the earth can be found in Trouble’s ‘Revelation (Life or Death)’, from their album ‘Psalm 9’ (1984). Manilla Road gave us two related songs ‘Seven Trumpets’ and ‘War in Heaven.’ More songs are ‘Seven Gates’ by Grotesque, ‘Seven Churches’ by Possessed, ‘Wormwood’ by Callisto, ‘A Wormwood Star’ by World Burns to Death, ‘Towards Babylon (Apollyon)’ by Behemoth, ‘The Whores of Babylon’ by Tiamat and many, many more. There are hundreds of other direct and indirect influences that can be found in metal songs. Try your hand at finding some of those that are not mentioned here. Who knows? Maybe you can create your own awaiting apocalypse playlist. Time is short………enjoy life while it lasts.

In a recent article where I explored the brief history of some bands that played a significant role in the local rock scene of the 1980s (read here ), I mentioned how difficult it is to find documented information about that era and its protagonists. While some of us lived through those times, fading memories and the loss of key figures have made it increasingly challenging to piece together the full story. However, the article seems to have sparked interest, and several artists from that time have reached out to share valuable information. This has opened the door to further exploration, and this article is a continuation of that journey into the past, with more to follow. In the early 1980s, Malta’s music scene thrived in the AST (Associazzjoni Sportiva Tigne) in Sliema, a hub for burgeoning rock bands. This former British military barracks, converted into rehearsal spaces, witnessed the rise and fall of numerous groups. Out of this vibrant environment, Structure was born in the autumn of 1983. Emerging from the remnants of two other bands, Shaktonyx and Chi2, the group quickly distinguished itself with its progressive rock style and evocative themes. Drummer Joe “Dusty” Farrugia and bassist Mike Harrison from Shaktonyx joined forces with keyboardist Pierre Caruana, whose compositions became the cornerstone of the band’s sound. They were soon joined by Mike Bukouski of Chi2 and synth player George Falzon, completing the instrumental lineup. The group’s first composition, “3 Min to Midnight,” was an instrumental overture inspired by the nuclear clock, reflecting the existential fears of the era. With their debut piece, Structure established themselves as a progressive band, exploring themes of war and global tension. In December 1983, the band expanded with the addition of vocalist Toni Sant St. John, whose dynamic presence introduced funk elements into their repertoire. Tracks like “Into the Black Door” and “Off Key” demonstrated the band’s evolving style. By early 1984, Structure debuted live at the AST grounds, delivering a performance that resonated with audiences. Their set-list included the powerful “Personal Message” and the pop-rock anthem “Structure of My Mind.” By 1985, Structure underwent significant transformations. Vocalist Toni Sant St. John departed, and Giorgina Sammut briefly took over as lead singer before pursuing a solo career. Claudio Tonna, with his robust and husky voice, joined as the new frontman. The departure of guitarist Mike Bukouski and synth player George Falzon, who left to work abroad, necessitated a shift in the band’s style and roles. Keyboardist Pierre Caruana described this period: “With this came a change in music direction. Without a guitar and George Falzon also leaving the band to work abroad, I became a more important frontman, apart from the fact I composed practically all the compositions. Also, the music became more new wave style as that was the mid-80s, and a change in clothes and looks style.” As technology improved and electronic music gained popularity, Structure adapted their sound, drawing inspiration from artists like Visage, Howard Jones, and Gary Numan. Pierre’s expanded role in the band saw him using arpeggiators and synthesizers to create intricate melodies, compensating for the absence of a guitarist. “This 2nd version of Structure endured far longer,” Pierre recalled. “We also took part in Kanzunetta Maltija with ‘Windsurfer,’ a song penned by Alfred C. Sant and Ray Mahoney. We had various concerts, more singles out including ‘Shout’ and ‘Personal Message,’ and played with foreign acts like Dee D. Jackson at venues in Malta and Gozo.” The addition of Mark Tonna, Claudio’s brother, on guitar and backing vocals in the band’s final year added further depth to their sound, supported by session musicians during live performances. By 1987, Structure had achieved nearly everything a local Maltese band could aspire to. Their disbandment marked the end of an era, but their influence remained strong. Pierre Caruana ventured into new musical projects in the years that followed. In the early 1990s, he collaborated with singer Mark Tonna to form Megapulse, releasing one of the first CDs produced on the island. Together with David Cassar Torregiani, Pierre formed Scar in the late 1990s, contributing to the band’s first local success with the song “Calling Out.” Pierre then joined Earth, a band featuring drummer/percussionist Fish and vocalist Kathy Manuel. This collaboration deepened Pierre’s creative range and culminated in his evolution as a solo artist. Adopting the name My Freespirit, he released his debut CD, Real Life, in 2009. This album marked a shift toward intimate and personal songwriting, tackling themes such as societal outcasts, the terminally ill, and global tragedies like the tsunami disaster. “My Freespirit” allowed Pierre to explore freedom of expression in both music and lyrics, creating a deeply personal and evocative body of work. The album, recorded at Mandala Studios and produced by Kathy Manuel and Jewls Verse, featured collaborations with artists including Liam, Mark Tonna, and Mike and George Hersey. It was dedicated to Dave Goodman, producer for the Sex Pistols and a mentor to Pierre, and to Pierre’s late mother, Anne Caruana. Pierre followed Real Life with his double album Tnejn in 2015, further solidifying his reputation as a solo artist. Meanwhile, Mark Tonna pursued a flourishing solo career, winning local music festivals and exploring theatrical and choral avenues. Both Pierre and Mark ensured that Structure’s legacy endured through their continued contributions to Malta’s music scene. Structure with manager Vince Pisani ( Far Out Magazine) , showcasing the early lineup. From their origins in the rehearsal spaces of AST to their reinvention in the new wave era, Structure was a band that captured the essence of musical adaptability and innovation. Their legacy, rooted in powerful compositions and evocative themes, lives on through the artistic journeys of their former members. Strummin' Foundation Celebrates 20 Years and Announces 2025 Events The Strummin' Foundation recently celebrated a significant milestone with their "Strummin’ 20 Years of Gold" concert, held on November 8th and 9th, 2024, at St. Agatha’s Theatre. The event attracted a record-breaking audience and featured over 100 guitarists, singers, band members, and volunteers, all dressed in their finest attire. Proceeds from the concert were donated to Dr. Klown, an organization dedicated to bringing joy to children in hospitals through clown doctor visits. Looking ahead, the foundation has announced the return of Akustika for their 10th concert, scheduled for March 7th and 8th, 2025, at Sala San Duminku in Valletta. This event will reunite the original lineup after a decade. Early bird tickets are expected to go on sale in mid-January 2025. Scheduled for 25 January 2025 at 8:30 PM at Teatru Salesjan, this fusion of Baroque and rock classics promises to be an unforgettable highlight of the festival. Headlined by The Rock Troupers  and the ProMużika Ensemble , the performance will reimagine iconic works by musical titans such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Jon Lord, Antonio Vivaldi, and even Pink Floyd. Audiences can expect a thrilling blend of Baroque precision and rock’s raw energy in an evening that pays homage to the pioneering spirit of Baroque Rock. The BaRock programme draws on research by musicologist Sara Gulgass, exploring the Baroque Rock phenomenon that emerged in the 1960s. Combining the intricate counterpoint, fugues, and ostinato basslines of Baroque music with the electrifying beats and instrumentation of rock, this genre has produced unforgettable reinterpretations of classical works. This year’s performance goes a step further, incorporating elements of progressive rock, with its extended solos and multi-movement compositions, alongside tributes to rock legends such as Keith Emerson and The Beatles. The Rock Troupers , a powerhouse of Malta’s rock scene since 2014, will lead the charge with their dynamic lineup made up of Daryl Ebejer  (vocals), Patrick Camilleri  (drums), Robert Galea  (bass), Josef “Fofi” Farrugia  (keyboards), Sean Vukovic  and Marc Galea  (guitars). Joining them are the virtuosos of the ProMużika Ensemble , including Sarah Spiteri  and Tatjana Chircop (violins), J oseph Mallia  (viola), Simon Abdilla Joslin  (cello), Tom Armitage (piano/harpsichord) and Cliff Zammit Stevens  (tenor). The album takes its name from the 789 species that have gone extinct in the past 400 years, offering a powerful reflection on humanity's relationship with the planet, animals, and each other. Miguel Debattista, a prominent figure in the Maltese and European punk scenes, has carved a remarkable path through music history. From pioneering punk rock in the Maltese language with Batteries Not Included (B.N.I.) to shaping melancholic post-punk landscapes with UltraNothing, his journey reflects a commitment to innovation and raw expression. BNI live at Zion B.N.I., co-founded by Debattista in the early 1990s, is celebrated for introducing punk rock in Maltese. Their 1999 debut album, Ilsien Pajjiżi (Native Tongue) , featured groundbreaking tracks like “L-Imġissem” and “Qrunha f'Butha.” These songs, written in Maltese, fused the raw energy of punk with ska, reggae, and rock influences, resonating deeply within their community. Inspired by the rebellious spirit of Sham 69’s If the Kids Are United , B.N.I. thrived on creating music that reflected Maltese angst while tackling everyday realities with a tongue-in-cheek approach. Their vibrant performances at venues like Dempsey’s Bar and The Edge rock bar became legendary, providing a platform for Malta’s burgeoning punk scene. Over the years, B.N.I. expanded their sound. Their second album, Force Majeur  (2004), embraced a more refined punk style infused with ska and reggae. This evolution continued with On and On…  (2006), combining raw energy with polished songwriting, and their 2022 release, Exponential Self-Destruction , which marked a triumphant return to their roots. UltraNothing In 2023, Debattista embarked on a new musical journey with UltraNothing, a post-punk trio based in Luxembourg. Formed with Mich and Pit, the band emerged from the ashes of their previous project, Office of Weird. UltraNothing’s sound is a distinctive blend of post-punk and noise rock, described by the band as “melancho-punk”—a raw, defiant ode to existential ennui and modern exhaustion. In July 2024, UltraNothing recorded their self-titled debut EP at Holtz Sound Studio, with mastering by Julien Rosenberger. Released on October 26, 2024, the EP features four tracks: “The Grace of Time,” “Fight It Out,” “Elation,” and “Animosity.” The launch event at Mix ‘n’ Kawa Bar in Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg, was a resounding success, supported by instrumental noise rock band TVESLA and rising stars FULVOUS. The EP, released on 10” vinyl, has garnered acclaim for its intricate soundscapes and thematic depth. The single “Fight It Out” was accompanied by a visually striking music video, earning attention from platforms like Metal Hammer and DIY Conspiracy. UltraNothing’s ethos rejects clichéd punk ideologies while maintaining a staunch opposition to racism, fascism, and sexism. Rather than relying on slogans, the band channels its defiance into music that critiques societal fallacies and human struggles with an understated intensity. Looking ahead, UltraNothing is set to perform at the prestigious Out of the Crowd Festival in 2025, joining an impressive lineup that includes Karate (USA) and Bambara (USA). This milestone highlights their growing influence within the European alternative music scene. Maltese artist Myles has just released his latest single (03/01/25), Lil Din l-Art Helwa , a bold and raw take on the state of his homeland. Inspired by the Maltese national anthem, the song flips its original sentiment, turning a hymn to Malta's beauty into a reflection on the bitter realities of power, corruption, and societal struggles. "I grew up loving the anthem's message, but I can't ignore what's happening around me," says Myles. "This song is my way of expressing how it feels to see a place you love being taken advantage of. It's not just music; it's a callout." The track is a collaboration with DJ Mac, who brings his signature scratching artistry to the mix, and Simon Deguara from Kill The Action, adding depth to the song's production. Mixed and mastered at Valhalla Music Studio, the sound is polished but carries a raw emotional punch. The accompanying video, directed and produced by Myles himself, is as visceral as the song. "I wanted the visuals to reflect my feelings-abduction, helplessness, and the cold reality of what's happening to our land," he explains. "Rockna Live and Unplugged," a unique compilation showcasing the vibrant Maltese music scene, was initially released as a digital album in November 2012 and later as a CD in a very limited number in the same year. Curated by Michael Bugeja, host of the weekly Rockna radio show on Net Radio, the album features 13 tracks recorded live and unplugged during the show. It serves as a tribute to the raw talent and diversity of Maltese artists, while also marking the 20th anniversary of the influential 1992 compilation Watching the Music . “ In truth, the album is officially a digital release – I made the CD only as a thank-you to the artists who gave me permission to use their work in the compilation (apart from some copies that I gave to people in the scene who appreciate it and who have been or are supportive of the scene, as well as helpful to me and the program)." Watching The Music 20th anniversary show 2012 "I only made 101 copies since, at the time, the station was called Radio 101, so the CD is somewhat of a collectable item also because it is not available in any store” Michael Bugeja explained when asked about this venture and, went on to elaborate: “ The idea for the compilation arose as the 20th anniversary of the compilation CD Watching the Music , which Radio 101 had released in 1992, was approaching. I had also prepared a program about Watching the Music , and since Rockna focuses on the local scene, I thought it would be a good idea to release another collection of tracks from local talent, with the difference being that all the tracks would be recorded live and unplugged during the program. There were many tracks to choose from, but I felt it was better to focus on emerging and/or lesser-known artists, and in fact, practically all the artists/groups were just starting out at the time. This includes The Shh , which, although made up of two members of the Beangrowers , was a new project at the time. It's also worth mentioning Alexandra Alden, now a well-known name in the scene, who was at the beginning of her career back then. The same goes for Claire Tonna, who, although we already knew her as part of the Particle Blue  project, was starting her solo career at the time. There is also a track by the English (of Maltese descent) singer-songwriter Victor Chetcuti, who was very active locally at the time. KulTural (top) and Errormantics (bottom) The Gozitan scene is also represented through the group Divine Sinners , Monobrow Musical Produce , and Joseph Portelli, an Australian/Gozitan singer-songwriter who was also starting to establish himself in the local scene at the time. And since I mentioned Australia, I'll mention Clayton Micallef, who was based in Malta at the time but now lives in Australia, and who performed a new song that he had just finished and spontaneously decided to dedicate to Rockna  during the interview itself. Victor Chetcuti The collection also includes two tracks in Maltese – one by KulTural , which is actually a poem by Kilin with a very original musical interpretation, and the other by Mistura , a group that is still active today. Joe Grech, a revered figure in Maltese music and Malta’s first representative at the Eurovision Song Contest, has passed away at the age of 90. Born in Cospicua (Bormla) on February 9, 1934, Grech leaves behind a remarkable legacy that spanned over seven decades. Grech is best known for his 1971 Eurovision performance of Marija l-Maltija , a song that not only brought Malta to the international stage but also celebrated the Maltese language and culture. The track remains an enduring favorite and a testament to his contribution to Maltese music. Joe Grech began his career as a trumpeter with the Żejtun Band Club before transitioning to singing, where he quickly gained recognition for his vocal talent. His breakthrough came in 1960 when he won the inaugural Malta Song Festival with his self-composed song Vola Uccellino , a competition that marked the start of his meteoric rise in the local music scene. He repeated this success in 1962 and gained international acclaim in 1964, winning the Best Singer/Composer Trophy at the International Song Festival in Bari, Italy, with the song Dorina . In 1971, Grech made history as the first Maltese artist to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest, performing Marija l-Maltija  in Dublin. This achievement firmly established him as a pioneer in Maltese music, opening doors for future artists. Grech's music resonated far beyond Malta’s shores. He toured extensively in Canada, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, often performing for the Maltese diaspora. His albums, including Eviva l-Maltin  (1995) and Katarin  (2000), and hit singles such as Il-Kaċċatur  and Saħħa Malta , cemented his reputation as a beloved artist among Maltese communities worldwide. In addition to his musical accomplishments, Grech was deeply committed to philanthropy, frequently supporting Caritas Malta, an organization founded by his brother, Mgr. Victor Grech. Proceeds from his music sales often went toward charitable causes, and he actively contributed his time and talent to support those in need. Tributes to the iconic singer have poured in from across Malta and beyond. Culture Minister Owen Bonnici hailed Grech as a cultural trailblazer, emphasizing his historic achievements in Eurovision and the Malta Song Festival. The Żejtun Band, where Grech began his musical journey, honored him as a cherished member of their community. The Maltese rock scene flourished in the 1980s, building on foundations laid in the 1960s and 70s. This decade marked an unprecedented evolution of rock music in Malta, thanks to the establishment of community hubs like Rokarja AST and improved accessibility for organizing concerts and festivals. Numerous bands left an indelible mark on the scene, and while articles on melodija.eu have already celebrated bands like X-Tend , Mirage , Atlam , V-Gile , Artwork , and High ‘N’ Dry , this article focuses on nine key bands that helped shape the future of Maltese rock music. Acid during the launch of 'Watching The Music' 1991 Acid Acid was a Maltese heavy rock band active from the early 1980s through the 1990s. They were a mainstay of the Rokarja AST scene in Tigne, regularly performing across Malta. The band included Mario Bonnici (vocals), Charles Camilleri (guitar), Roger Vella (drums), William Christie (bass), and Robert Cuschieri (keyboards). One of their landmark performances took place on 28 May 1983 at the Tigne Chapel alongside Overdose. Acid also contributed two tracks, Electric Lady  and Rock City Limits , to the 1992 compilation CD Watching the Music , recorded at Padded Cell Studio. Overdose 1983 Overdose Overdose was one of Malta's pioneering heavy metal bands, based in the Rokarja AST scene during the 1980s. The original lineup consisted of Miriam Spiteri (Miriam Gafa) on vocals, Andrew Zammit and Joe "Spider" Fenech on guitars, Stephen Spiteri on bass, and Joseph Buttigieg on drums. They performed alongside Acid at the Tigne Chapel in May 1983. Overdose saw significant lineup changes over the years, but unfortunately, they never recorded any tracks, leaving behind no studio or live recordings. Franky Camilleri playing with Fluid at MaltaSajf 1983 Fluid Fluid was a progressive rock band active in the early 1980s. Originating from the Rokarja AST hub, their initial lineup included Twanny Mifsud ic-Chimbillai (guitar and vocals), Saviour Bartolo (bass), Franky Camilleri (keyboards), and Dominic (drums). Although the band dissolved in 1984, they reunited briefly in 1986 to perform at the MaltaSajf concert organized by the YMCA. Mifsud later co-founded the band Artwork. Rough Trade Rough Trade was a short-lived band that emerged in the Rokarja AST compound in 1984 after guitarist John Borg left Subverts. The lineup included Ivan Vella (lead guitar), Simon Sammut (bass), John Borg (guitar), Joseph "Blackie" Farrugia (vocals), and Vince Abela (drums). Despite their brief existence, Rough Trade left a mark on the vibrant Tigne music scene. Subverts Subverts was one of Malta's first alternative rock bands, active throughout the 1980s. Founded by singer/guitarist Mike Bonnici and percussionist Sebastian Debono, the band later expanded to include John Borg (guitar), Pierre Portelli (Pete Portelli) on bass, and Charles Cutajar (Chalkie) on drums. Their notable gigs include a performance at the Tigne Chapel on 18 March 1983. Over the years, the band saw significant lineup changes and eventually disbanded in 1988. Subverts: photo Alfie Fabri Sphinx: photo Joe Demicoli Sphinx Formed on 13 September 1983, Sphinx consisted of Joe Demicoli (vocals), Adrian Mercieca (guitar), Bernard Scerri (bass), and Eric Schembri (drums), with later additions of Ivan Bonett on keyboards and Iman Schembri. The band faced tragic losses with the early deaths of Schembri in 2000 and Scerri in 2002. Abstrass Abstrass was Malta’s pioneering punk band, founded in 1980 by Erich Azzopardi. Inspired by punk icons like the Sex Pistols, Abstrass became a cornerstone of the Tigne punk scene. The band’s rehearsal space at Tigne Fortress became a hub for alternative bands of the time. Abstrass celebrated their 25th anniversary Erich Azzopardi with a special album release. Erich, affectionately known as Erich il-Punk, passed away in 2019, leaving behind a legacy of uncompromising dedication to punk ideals and a deep influence on the local music scene. He was remembered as a strong idealist and a caring, positive individual who shaped Malta's punk culture. The Unexplained Formed by Paul Borg (Pawlu tal-Pitrolju), The Unexplained’s lineup included John Sammut (lead and rhythm guitar), Saviour Pace (bass), and Anthony Cesare (drums). One of their significant performances was at the Radio City Theatre in Ħamrun on 20 April 1990, a recording of which can be found on Archive.org . Tragically, Paul Borg passed away in 1998, leaving behind a legacy not just as a musician but also as a community leader in Birkirkara, where he served as a councilor during the first and second Legislatures (1993 and 1997). The Unexplained - John Sammut, Saviour Pace, Tony Cesare and Paul Borg StratKast Stratkast 1988 Another prominent name in Malta’s 1980s rock scene was the hard rock band StratKast. With a diehard following, their gigs were high-energy experiences. Fronted by Joe Mizzi, StratKast was among the few local bands to release a single, So Sorry . The band featured Mark Vella, Jon Vella Zarb (later Mirage), Joe Mizzi (later High ‘N’ Dry), and Joe Vella Zarb (later Fire). Mizzi's musical journey later took him to Germany, where he joined High n’ Dry alongside former B3 bandmate Gino Micallef. Notable Gigs of the 1980s The 1980s witnessed several memorable gigs that defined the era's rock culture. These included the First Rock-A-Buzz Festival in 1987, hosted at Kennedy Grove and featuring acts like DJ Lito and Ivan Filletti’s project Filletti & Friends. Other standout performances included MaltaSajf ’86 , the Subverts and Hangover gig at Tigne Chapel on 18 March 1983, the Overdose and Acid concert at the same venue on 28 May 1983, and the Davy Jones, Tony Grimaud, and Atlam show on 9 July 1983. For sure, there were many more bands that were as important as any mentioned in this article, but unfortunately, information about their stories and achievements is very hard to come by. In 1994 Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, a voluntary, non-profit organisation, dedicated to promote awareness, safeguard and restore Malta’s historical patrimony, launched the Fort Rinella Rehabilitation Project.  The restoration of the fort was estimated to cost Lm150,000 and a number of fund raising initiatives were organised for this aim. Fort Rinella Situated at Kalkara, the Victorian battery was constructed between 1878 and 1886 and covers an area of 6,300 square meters.  Though it is commonly referred to as Fort Rinella, it was officially a battery and was never classified as a fort.  The main attraction is an Armstrong 100-ton gun, which survives and still fires.  The battery was in use between 1886 and 1965.  The Rinella Battery was taken over by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna in 1991, and after exhaustive restoration works opened its doors to the public as an open-air museum in 1996.  Rock for the Fort Bands from across the local rock and metal spectrum gathered together for a three day event to raise funds for the restoration of the fort.  Rock for the Fort took place inside the battery between Friday, 26 and Sunday, 28 August 1994.  Doors opened at 7p.m. and tickets, for the price of Lm1.50 (€3.49) per show or Lm3 (€6.99) for the three evenings, where sold from the Rock Shop in Old Theatre Street, Valletta and at the door.  Special public transport arrangements, to and from Kalkara, were made for the event. The groups entertaining the well attended event included:  Myth, Realida, Fatal Aggression, Beaheded, Granny, Forsaken, Trial by Fate, No Name Yet, Norm Rejection, Lithomancy, Oblique Visions, Sanity, Electric Blues, Disinterred, Manix, Masada, Jaipur, Eric il-Punk and the crowds were delighted by a guest appearance by the Gozitan Hard Rock Party Leader, Patrick Girma (Ħanfusa).  References: The Sunday Times, August 21, 1994 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Rinella  ________________________________________________________________________ Note from the editor It appears that most, if not all, of the performances were recorded, yet only one has been made available for purchase over the past 30 years.
