- My Freespirit – Real Life
A Tribute to Music and Memory by Pierre Caruana In 2009, Pierre Caruana introduced the world to My Freespirit , a personal project and pseudonym under which he released his debut solo album. This marked a new chapter in Caruana’s career, following his tenure with bands like Structure and Scar. His journey took a significant turn when he collaborated with Dave Goodman, an accomplished record producer and musician. Goodman was best known as the live sound engineer for the Sex Pistols and the producer of three of their studio demo sessions. Over his career, Goodman also worked with early punk acts such as Eater, Chelsea, The Cannibals, Maniacs, and UK Subs, and later co-produced with Darryl Read in 2002. Eventually, Goodman established Mandala Music, a studio and label based in Malta. The collaboration between Caruana and Goodman was initiated by Stefan Dimech (Fish id-Drummer), who introduced the two musicians. They conceptualized a music project titled Earth , but this endeavor was cut short when Goodman tragically passed away from a heart attack at the age of 53. Despite this loss, Caruana formed a strong bond with Goodman and his partner, Kathy Manuell, who continued to manage Mandala Music on a smaller scale. Between his commitments and composing for Earth , Caruana amassed a significant collection of songs. At Kathy's encouragement, he began recording these tracks, with her overseeing the process. Over the years, Kathy had gained production expertise while working alongside Goodman, enabling her to guide the project effectively. The resulting album, Real Life , is deeply personal, reflecting pivotal moments from Caruana’s life. Among the most significant tracks are those dedicated to his late mother, Annie, who lost her battle with cancer. The song Mother Love features Annie’s voice, the only recording of her singing, something she did daily at home when she was engaged in her daily routines but never professionally. The album’s lyrics chronicle Caruana’s life journey, with photographs from various stages of his life adorning the CD booklet’s back cover. Caruana dedicated Real Life to two central figures in his life: his mother, for her unwavering support, and Dave Goodman, whose musical influence was transformative. All songs were written and composed by Caruana, except for Outcast , which features music composed by Jewls Verse. Verse also contributed drum programming and backing vocals. Additional musicians included George Hershey, Mark Tonna, and Liam on guitars, with Mike Hershey on bass. The album was recorded at Mandala Studios, produced by Jewls Verse and Kathy Manuell, and featured cover art by Ahmed Dgibli. Released in 2009, the album owes its completion to Kathy, whose determination brought the project to fruition. Tragically, Kathy passed away from cancer a few years later, ending a cherished friendship and delaying Caruana’s second album, which remains unreleased. Real Life consists of 10 progressive rock tracks, influenced by Genesis (Caruana’s favorite band), Marillion, and Pink Floyd. The album also marked Caruana’s vocal debut. Despite a turbulent period following the album’s release, which led to his semi-retirement from music, Caruana has hinted at a return in 2025, expressing hopes to rekindle his passion for music and his beloved keyboard. The album Real Life is currently available at Melodija.eu . - Teatru Salesjan: A Historical Gem and a Musical Haven in Sliema
Teatru Salesjan, established in 1908, is the oldest existing theatre in Sliema and one of Malta's cherished cultural landmarks. Originally founded by the Salesians of Don Bosco, the theatre, then known as Juventutis Domus, served as a hub for young intellectuals to engage in cultural and educational pursuits. Over the years, Teatru Salesjan has evolved into a vibrant space dedicated to the arts, with a strong emphasis on music. Original facade The Salesian Co-operators in Malta The Salesian presence in Malta began in the late 19th century, driven by the vision of Don Bosco. Although the first Maltese Salesian Co-operators formed in the 1870s, it wasn't until the 1880s that requests were made for Salesian missionaries to come to Malta. The Salesians focused on youth education and charitable works, continuing Don Bosco’s legacy after his death in 1888. Today, the Salesians remain dedicated to improving the lives of young people through education and service in Malta. A Rich History of Artistic Endeavors During the 1930s, Carmelo Galea, a Maltese Salesian Brother with a profound love for music, spearheaded efforts to enrich the theatre’s artistic output. After returning to Malta from Modica, Sicily, in 1931, Galea dedicated much of his life to the oratory in Sliema, focusing particularly on enhancing the theatre's artistic offerings. His passion for music led to a significant increase in the theatre's musical productions. Notably, on November 11, 1934, he composed both the music and lyrics for "La Canzone Internazionale," a piece presented at the Salesian Theatre. Galea's contributions established a strong foundation for Teatru Salesjan’s musical traditions, many of which continue to influence the theatre’s programming today. Teatru Salesjan 1925 Another notable historical feature of Teatru Salesjan is the proscenium fresco created by Giuseppe Calì in 1910, two years after the theatre’s inauguration. Titled "The Virtues of Mankind," this oil-on-stone lunette adorns the theatre's proscenium arch and is surrounded by rich bas-relief, pre-art deco The Virtues of Mankind by Giuseppe Cali' stucco decorations filled with symbolism. Recently, the fresco underwent meticulous restoration to reveal its original vibrant colors, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Calì’s contribution to Teatru Salesjan remains a testament to his significant impact on Maltese art and culture. Recent and Upcoming Events Teatru Salesjan continues to shine as a beacon for cultural and musical events. Recently, the theatre celebrated its grand reopening on May 31, 2024, with a concert featuring popular Maltese acts such as Red Electrick, The New Victorians, Claire Tonna, and Auntie’s Yellow Sofa. Renovation work began in 2019, and aimed to modernise the venue, bringing it up to current standards while ensuring it remains a professional space for performers. With support from the Planning Authority’s Development Planning Fund, the theatre underwent significant upgrades to enhance its accessibility, creating a comfortable and welcoming environment for audiences of all abilities, ages, and mobility levels. The newly-contemporary theatre, seats around 450 people. The renovation reflects the community's commitment to preserving the theatre’s legacy while making it a more inclusive space for future generations. During the summer months of 2024, the Harlem Starlight Series brought jazz and dance performances to the stage, captivating audiences with its vibrant energy and artistry. Teatru Salesjan's Reopening Concert 31-05-24 Steve Rothery’s concert in Malta, part of the celebrations marking 45 years of making music, took place at Teatru Salesjan in Sliema on October 4th and 5th. The performances featured two different setlists, combining Rothery’s solo material with iconic tracks from Marillion. Organized by Rock 'N Malta and NnG Promotions, the event offered fans a unique opportunity to experience Rothery’s legendary guitar work live at this historic venue, further cementing Teatru Salesjan’s reputation as a premier cultural and musical hub in Malta. Restoration in progress: Workers diligently refurbish a historic site between 2019 and 2024, preserving intricate architectural details and structural integrity. Looking ahead, February 2025 is packed with exciting events. "Tipsy Tunes," a series of musical evenings, will take place on February 6, 13, and 20, offering a relaxed yet engaging atmosphere for music lovers. From February 10 to 16, the theatre will present "The Love Letters I Never Sent," a poignant theatrical performance exploring untold stories of love and missed connections. On February 28, "Speakeasy Swing: A Carnival Cabaret" will transport audiences back to the roaring 1920s with a jazz-infused carnival celebration. In March, the theatre will host "The Coarse Acting Show" from March 14 to 16, a comedic production that humorously embraces the art of "bad acting" in an endearing way. A Hub for Creativity Teatru Salesjan remains steadfast in its mission to support young creatives and foster a cohesive community. Through workshops, performances, and collaborative projects, the theatre provides an invaluable platform for emerging artists to hone their craft and share their talents. As it embarks on its next chapter, Teatru Salesjan continues to uphold its legacy as a cultural cornerstone in Malta. Whether it’s through the timeless art of music, theatre, or dance, this historic venue is sure to inspire and entertain for generations to come. References: Teatru Salesjan GuideMalta.com

The music blended symphonic elements with progressive structures, making it a compelling introduction to the band’s sound. Shortly after, in 2008, the ambitious concept album The Sounds of Silence began taking shape. Initially conceived as a double album, it was divided into two parts due to logistical and financial constraints. The first instalment was released in 2011, solidifying Different Strings' reputation as a band unafraid to tackle expansive and thought-provoking themes. Throughout its history, Different Strings has seen numerous lineup changes, with Mallia remaining the creative anchor. Notable collaborators include Kurt Aquilina on guitar, Errol Cutajar and Alan Mayo on vocals, Julian Mallia and Karl Dingli – drums, Trevor Tabone and Johann Tabone on bass plus various other musicians who contributed to the band’s evolving sound. The band’s discography grew with the release of the Victims of Love EP in 2010, featuring alternate versions of tracks from The Sounds of Silence and unique instrumental pieces. This release included a poignant tribute to the late artist Noel Cauchi, showcasing Mallia’s ability to imbue his music with personal and emotional depth. Over the years, the band has reissued key works, such as a re-recorded version of Dead Man Walking in 2014 and released significant albums like The Sands of Time in 2021. In 2014, they achieved a milestone by winning the Hard Rock Rising Global Battle of the Bands and earning a top-ten placement in the international competition. Despite the challenges posed by lineup changes and logistical difficulties, live events have remained an integral part of the band’s identity. International recognition has been a defining feature of Different Strings’ journey. The band has been featured in prominent magazines like Classic Rock – Prog, Fireworks, and Big Bang. In 2012, their track was included in a special edition distributed at the inaugural Prog Rock Music Awards in the UK, placing them alongside legendary figures such as Steve Hackett and Steven Wilson. Notable songs include the energetic "Out of Time", the expansive title track "The Sands of Time", and the haunting "Broken Childhood". The album also includes reprises of "The Hourglass Overture" and "Out of Time" , adding a cyclical thematic layer to the project. Chris Mallia serves as the creative force behind the album, performing all instruments and providing backing vocals. Supporting the project are Andrea Casali (lead vocals), known for his work with Astra, Iced Fish, and No Gravity, and AnneMarie Spiteri (vocals on track 8), from Viper Soup Complex. Additional contributions include Kurt Aquilina (guitar solo on track 11), Jeanpierre Zammit (guitar solo on track 10), and Arthem Zhulyev (tenor saxophone solo on track 4). Singles such as Legacy of War (2012) and Ten Dollar Love (2021) further illustrate the diversity and depth of Different Strings’ output. - Philip Rokarja Pace (1954–2024)
Philip Rokarja Pace, a prominent figure in Malta's rock music scene, passed away alone at his home in Ħaż-Żebbuġ following a heart attack on January 28, 2024. He was 69 years old, born on June 9, 1954. His body remained in the mortuary at Mater Dei Hospital until October 16, 2024, as no one came forward to organize his funeral. Ultimately, he was laid to rest by the Government in a communal grave at Addolorata Cemetery, East Division EA-A-548. Sadly, there is no marker on the grave to indicate his final resting place. Next week will mark the first anniversary of his passing.* Philip Pace’s contributions to Malta’s music community were both foundational and transformative, particularly during the vibrant rock era of the 1980s. Prior to his involvement with ROKARJA and his prominent years with the Tigné Barracks scene, Philip honed his skills as a DJ and sound engineer. His technical expertise and passion for music laid the groundwork for the role he would later play in shaping the Maltese rock scene. A dedicated supporter and active promoter of local music, he played an instrumental role in the development of the Maltese rock movement, with a special focus on the Tigné Barracks venue, which became a hub for emerging bands. From 1982 to 1984, he worked tirelessly behind the scenes, organizing concerts, providing technical support, and encouraging bands to evolve creatively. He was deeply involved in the creation of ROKARJA , a movement that was central to Malta’s music scene during that period. In addition to his efforts in promoting local talent, Philip was well-known for his sound engineering skills and his commitment to ensuring that concerts and events ran smoothly. He played an essential role in the success of multiple gigs, including the historic Nazareth concert at Tigné and the seminal performances held at the Tigné Chapel and open-air concert spaces. His expertise in sound and lighting made him a trusted collaborator for several bands for whom he provided technical support. His contributions went far beyond the stage, offering guidance and mentorship to young musicians, always encouraging them to pursue professionalism and continually improve. December 3, 1983, when Maltese Rock and Pop music was officially integrated into Maltese culture. Philip’s passion for music was not limited to live performances. He was a lifelong enthusiast of David Bowie and The Beatles , developing a deep knowledge and appreciation of their work. His collection of Beatles memorabilia was legendary, though a devastating fire tragically destroyed much of it. Despite this loss, Philip’s love for the music remained undiminished, and he continued to support and promote the genre with undying fervour. In 2023, Philip spoke with fellow music enthusiast Eric Montfort for an interview on Fuzzbox , where they discussed Bowie’s iconic albums from the 1970s and '80s. Even in his later years, he maintained his status as an expert and a guide for those exploring rock music, both local and international. His humble, down-to-earth personality made him beloved not only by musicians but also by fans, who knew him as a dedicated supporter who lived and breathed the music scene. On 'Tfuliti u Żgħożiti' NET FM 4th February 2021 photo: Noel D'Anastas Philip also made his mark in local culture by overseeing technical aspects of events like the MCC concert by Mirage in 1982. His role in advancing the Maltese music scene culminated in the official inclusion of rock and pop music in the national cultural agenda in 1983, cementing his place in the history of the nation’s musical evolution. Philip is remembered not only for his professional contributions but also for his deep personal connections with those he worked with. As Ray Schembri (X-Vandals) poignantly recalled, "Philip always had the right advice on how to develop the bands and approach professionalism, even when we didn’t realize it at the time." His passing marks the end of an era for Malta’s music community, but his legacy lives on in the many bands he helped, the memories he created, and the culture he helped build. Philip’s work, passion, and dedication to the Maltese music scene will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Philip. Thank you for your tireless dedication and your unwavering belief in the power of music to bring people together. Your legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians. A Mass for the repose of the soul of our beloved Philip Pace will take place on Sunday, 9th February, at 8:30 AM at the Oratory Chapel, Salesian Oratory, Sliema. Let us come together in prayer as we remember him one year after his passing. *Thanks to Mr. Eman Bonnici, Nello Rizzo Naudi, Tony Micallef for providing the corrected information and Noel D'Anastasi and Toni Sant for sharing.

- Haine - Fertile Void - Album Release
Haine Unleashes Their Debut Album: Fertile Void - Press Release Malta’s deathcore act Haine are proud to announce the release of their highly anticipated debut album, Fertile Void . This release follows the success of their self-titled EP (2021) and marks a new era for the band as they continue to push the boundaries of extreme music. With their signature blend of heavy grooves, crushing breakdowns, and melodic overtones, Haine is set to make waves both locally and internationally. A Bold Conceptual Journey Fertile Void is more than just an album—it is an immersive narrative experience that explores the complexities of human emotion and personal growth. Taking inspiration from the Gestalt Cycle of Experience, the album’s concept is also influenced by psychotherapy, particularly the transformative process of navigating the Fertile Void. This stage represents a moment of emptiness that fosters self-awareness and growth. The ten tracks take the listener on a profound journey through the stages of the cycle, where each stage is represented through both lyrics and music, creating a deeply layered narrative that invites introspection and personal interpretation. The protagonist’s journey is a metaphor for self-discovery, turning moments of uncertainty into opportunities for transformation and empowerment. Collaborations with Metal Heavyweights Haine has elevated the album’s impact by collaborating with some of the metal world’s most respected figures. Ben Duerr of Shadow of Intent delivers a commanding vocal performance on "The Lake," a track that exemplifies the album’s intensity and depth. Andreas Bjulver of Cabal brings his unique energy to "Insentient," a track that fuses Haine’s sound with global deathcore influences. These collaborations not only enrich the album’s sound but also introduce Haine to new audiences worldwide. The Creative Process The creation of Fertile Void was an intricate and collaborative endeavor, divided into several key stages. The band developed a cohesive narrative that intertwines deeply personal emotions with universal themes, serving as the foundation for the album's lyrics and musical direction. The lyric writing was a deliberate process, aligning each track with specific emotional or psychological stages as part of the storytelling. During pre-production, led by Claudio, the band produced detailed demos that acted as blueprints, refining arrangements and experimenting with additional instrumentation and effects. Recording took place at SpineSplitter Studio under the guidance of David Depasquale, whose expertise in mixing and mastering brought a polished yet raw quality to the sound, encapsulating the album’s essence. The visual aspects were equally deliberate, with Claudio collaborating with Bjorgvin from MetalCover.art to design artwork that complements the album’s themes. Photography by Etienne Bugeja and videography by Nicholas Bonello further enriched the project, with the release of two music videos—“The Lake,” featuring Ben Duerr, and “Blood Moon”—and a third video set to premiere soon, adding layers to the album’s immersive narrative. Future Releases and Performances Haine is committed to providing a comprehensive experience for their fans. Alongside the album’s release, the band has developed exclusive new merchandise and plans for extensive international promotion. Released and upcoming music videos will continue to explore the album’s themes, offering fans a deeper connection to the concept. Live performances will be a key component of the album’s promotion. Haine is slated to perform at major local events such as The Farsons Beer Festival and Rock the South, as well as international festivals alongside some of deathcore’s biggest names. These shows will serve as a platform to showcase Fertile Void to diverse audiences, solidifying Haine’s reputation as innovators in the genre. Tracklisting : Empowering the Outcasts Haine’s mission with Fertile Void is to give a voice to the voiceless, challenging conventional norms and fostering a sense of empowerment among listeners. By addressing self-awareness and personal growth, the band aims to break the stigma surrounding these topics within the metal community and beyond. Release Date and Availability Fertile Void will be available on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Bandcamp, and YouTube as of 24th January 2024. Subsequently, physical copies and exclusive merchandise can be purchased through the band’s official channels and throughout live shows. - Kewn Records press release
Robert Farrugia releases the official soundtrack album ‘Natura Maltija’ Maltese ambient artist Robert Farrugia releases soundtrack album ‘Natura Maltija’, providing a playful, ambient-inspired score of hardware synthesis and orchestral instrumentation to beautiful multi-part Maltese nature documentary. Album ‘Natura Maltija’ out now Phantom Limb / Kewn Records | KINO008 / KWN020 | DIG | 17th January 2025 Photo Credit: Kris Polidano "Offers something near holy and yet alien...An ambient evocation of nature in its habitat. Natura Maltija sounds at times like Brian Wilson, John Cage, Tangerine Dream, Harold Budd." - Monolith Cocktail About 'Natura Maltija' [Official Soundtrack] Farrugia’s ‘Natura Maltija’ score marries traditional and organic orchestration with contemporary ambient-aligned sound design to support the narrative of the documentary series - itself a rare and deeply engaging longform experience, unique to the tiny Mediterranean archipelago Just as the series, Farrugia’s soundtrack captures the breadth and beauty of Malta's diverse wildlife. Each track corresponds a specific lifeform, both fauna and flora, while recurring motifs and instrumentation bind the album and series into an overarching narrative. Recorded, as usual, in his home studio, Farrugia worked closely with the series producers to offer both celebratory and wistful storytelling. Series producer and director Saviour Bonnici's inspiration to create Natura Maltija [Eng: Maltese Nature] stems from a young age, largely influenced by his father, who shared his knowledge and passion for the natural world. Bonnici came to understand that Maltese nature, rich in biodiversity - there are over 11,000 species, 130 of which endemic - was under threat. Sensing a want of environmental education in the Maltese school system, he took action. Natura Maltija, a beautifully shot and directed, entirely Maltese-language documentary series showcasing the island’s unique flora and fauna, was broadcast on One, a key terrestrial channel on Maltese television Bonnici met Robert Farrugia through mutual friend in Malta’s small but fraternal music scene, proposing that Farrugia’s ambient prodcution matched the tone envisioned for the series. The soundtrack became essential in conveying each species’ story: wonderment for the rare weasel (‘“Ballottra’”) and sadness for the endangered Maltese freshwater crab (“Qabru”). The first series, now completed, and already domestically broadcast, Natura Maltija is to expand its reach., with plans to make the series internationally available across online media platforms, with newly added English language subtitles. The second series of Natura Maltija will be integrated into the local education system via the Maltese Ministry of Education, helping to promote nature education among students and foster a long lasting awareness of Malta's biodiversity. About Robert Farrugia Robert Farrugia is a dynamic and continually evolving ambient artist whose palette has, over years of releasing solo music, grown to touch on drone, neoclassical, downtempo, and IDM. Drawn to acoustic instrumentation with significant personal value, such as his family’s Weinbach piano, these instruments become more than just tools for his compositional practice, they act as unique characters, each adding its own voice and depth. Milestones in his career include the releases of Tines in 2016 and Slow Morning in 2017, both on Spain’s Archives Records. He has also collaborated with Dylan Henner for one-off track "Xochitlatcan", and reworked Past Inside the Present boss zakè's "New Dawn" for the latter’s remix collection. - Watching The Music: A Landmark Compilation
"Watching The Music" is a notable CD compilation that showcases the vibrant Maltese music scene of the early 1990s. Produced and released by Radio 101 in 1992, the album features ten tracks, with two songs each from five prominent Maltese bands: E-Zee Way Out, No Strings Attached, Brainstorm, Acid, and Bigfoot. This compilation was a spin-off from a radio show about the Maltese music scene, hosted by John Bundy. Tracklisting: E-Zee Way Out "Running Out Of Time" / "Sweet Little Angel" No Strings Attached "Seize The Day" / "The Good Life" Brainstorm "Only Time Will Tell" / "One Track Mind" Acid "Electric Lady" / "Rock City Limits" Bigfoot "Typecasted Entities" / "Angel Turning" The album was directed by John Bundy, with Robert Longo and David Vella serving as producers and engineers. Recording sessions took place at Temple Studios in Mġarr, Malta, between January and May 1992. The linear notes for "Watching The Music" were penned by then-chairman of Radio 101, Lou Bondi. Reflecting on the project's origins, Bondi wrote: "Shortly after launching RADIO 101 in 1991 we started airing a programme on Maltese bands. Week after week we met a lot of intelligent and talented musicians who were edging to take the music scene by storm. We liked what we heard and wanted to capture their sounds on CD. This project is the result of enthusiasm, team spirit and a genuine belief in the potential of these bands. It was great working with each of them. The people behind the scenes who made it all possible were Victor Formosa, John Bundy, Robert Longo, David Vella, Charles Stroud and Mario Muscat. At RADIO 101 we're proud to have helped put this CD together. I wish the boys and girls in these bands the best of luck... Rock on and keep watching the music." The compilation was dedicated to Chris Zammit, the late drummer of No Strings Attached, highlighting the heartfelt connection between the project and Malta’s close-knit music community. "Watching The Music" holds a special place in Malta's musical history, capturing the essence of the local rock scene during a transformative period. The early 1990s were a time of significant growth and experimentation for Maltese bands, building upon the pioneering efforts of the 1980s. Bands like E-Zee Way Out and No Strings Attached contributed to this dynamic era, blending various rock influences to create a unique Maltese sound. In 2012, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of "Watching The Music," Michael Bugeja of Radio 101 released a digital compilation titled "Rockna Live and Unplugged." - One Ring....J.R.R. Tolkien ruled metal!
English writer and philologist John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892 – 1973). History tends to repeat itself. In the 1990’s fantasy author J.K. Rowling set pen to paper, or fingers to keys, to write some bedtime stories for her children. The rest is history. Her seven books concerning Harry Potter sold millions of copies and were turned into a very successful film series by Warner Bros. Pictures. There is nothing new under the sun, this was done before by the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien when between 1937 and 1949 he wrote The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The books and gained a cult following and were turned into a film trilogy by Peter Jackson. In short the books narrate how the Rings of Power that were given to men, dwarves and elves ended up forged into One Ring by the main antagonist Sauron, the Dark Lord, in order to allow him to rule over all. In a quest to destroy this ring and bring down Sauron, hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin, set out from the Sire with this mission in mind. Guided by Gandalf the Company of the Ring is formed in order to rally all factions to aid the Free Peoples of Middle-Earth against Sauron’s armies. Men are represented by Aragon and Boromir, the elves by Legolas and the dwarves by Gimli. Frodo has to fight a personal battle against the power exerted by the ring as he fights to accomplish the feat of destroying it in the fires of Mount Doom. Well, this is a very simplistic approach of telling the tale. It’s basically another take at describing in a fantastic way the battle between good and evil and the triumph of the former. I’m sure most of you have seen the films. Try your hand at reading the books. It’s a feat in itself, but truly worth your time. Mysticism, fantasy and doomy Mordor were the perfect fodder for a heavy metal fire. Lord of the Rings books have directly and indirectly influenced innumerable bands and artists, here are a few metal bands that have taken this story at heart. The song ‘The Wizard’ on Black Sabbath ’s self-titled debut album was inspired by Gandalf. Geezer Butler was reading Lord of the Rings at the time and loosely based the lyrics to reflect the wizard ………. and allegedly the provider of narcotics who supplied the band with his ‘magic’ potions. “Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul/ ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum -ishi krimpatul.” J.R.R. Tolkien went into such detail as creating fictional languages for the different races. Translated from the Black Speech spoken in Mordor this phrase would mean, “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them / One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.” Varg Vikerns got the inspiration for the name of his black metal project Burzum from Tolkien. This should come as no surprise as his first band was named Uruk-Hai, with reference to the Orcs in Mordor. Also his pseudonym Count Grishnackh is a reference to the captain of the Orcs Grishnákh. Norwegian black mettalers Dimmu Borgir are more subtle in their approach but without a doubt their frontman’s namesake Shagrath is a play of words on the orc captain of Cirith Ungol, Shagrat. Not to be left out of the most epic battle of all times, Swedish power metal band Sabaton included the track ‘Shadows’ in their 2007 album ‘Metalizeris.’ This song is about the army of Sauron, the Dark Lord of Mordor. “Facing the wind as they ride through the sky Shadows of Mordor black horses they fly Black Shadow King, find the ring Search for the Halfling you lords of the dark The hobbit with Sauron's ring he is your mark Unholy light, in the night Black Knights of Sauron You're made of iron Black shadows of Mordor Wield one-eyed shields Unholy ring wraiths with armor of steel Kings of the past to no one you kneel Hearts filled with hate, that's your fate Facing the wind as they ride through the sky Shadows of Mordor black horses they fly Ride Shadow King, find the ring.” Led Zeppelin also make references to Lord of the Rings for example in songs such as ‘Misty Mountain Hop’, referring to the Misty Mountains and ‘The Battle of Evermore’ and ‘Ramble On’, to name a few. Contrary to popular belief one of their most popular tracks ‘Stairway to Heaven’ is not Tolkien inspired. Not the same can be said on Megadeth ’s ‘This Day We Fight’ from their 2009 album ‘Endgame.’ Dave Mustaine had Aragon’s battle speech from The Return of the King when he penned down the lyrics. “...I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the Age of Men comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight !” It is not a secret that former Rush drummer Neil Peart (1952 – 2020) was into literature, including the epic Tolkien works. He incorporated Lord of the Rings themes into Rush songs such as ‘Rivendell’ (1975), named after the Elven city. A year later he penned ‘The Necromancer’, which is a reference to a nickname Gandalf coined for Sauron in The Hobbit. This musical opus comes in three parts, just like the novel. Another band that have their namesake inspired by Lord of the Rings are the Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth . Their name translates to ‘hill of doom’, which is another name for Orodruin, the volcanic ‘Mount Doom.’ Another band named after a landscape from Lord of the Rings is Gorgoroth , who get their inspiration form The Plateau of Gorgoroth, which is a wasteland of volcanic ash in the heart of Mordor. The place where Sauron’s army waits for commands to attack any potential intruders. There are a multitude of other bands that have been inspired by Tolkien and his works, but none will outdo German power metal band Blind Guardian in their devotion. Not only do we find numerous references in their songs, but taking it a step further, the band even based a concept album based on the tales by Tolkien. Their sixth studio album, ‘Nightfall in Middle-Earth’, released in 1998, is based upon The Silmarillion, a book from the First Age of Middle-earth, recounting the troubled history of Beleriand, as the Elves battle the Dark Lord Morgoth. Apart from the songs the album includes narrated parts of the story. Rumors were milling that the Blind Guardian were to provide the score for the film series, but this never materialized. All that remains is for you to create a playlist of Tolkien inspired metal songs and pay homage to the one who ruled they all by reading his books. Let the adventure begin!

Sonic Storm Parts Ways with Guitarist Miguel Ángel Sarmiento photo: Rachel Mifsud Thrash metal band Sonic Storm has announced a major lineup change, parting ways with guitarist Miguel Ángel Sarmiento. The decision, shared in a heartfelt Facebook post on January 4, was described as “entirely amicable” and rooted in logistical challenges. In their statement, the band wrote: "After much thought, we have taken the difficult decision to part ways with our guitarist, Miguel Ángel Sarmiento. This is an entirely amicable split as it is mainly due to logistical reasons. Miguel has been an amazing part of our journey, bringing his unique energy to the stage and countless laughs to our rehearsals. We’re incredibly grateful for his contributions and the memories we’ve created together. Looking ahead, we’ve decided not to seek a replacement as instead, we’ll be returning to our roots as a three-piece thrash ensemble — the way we originally envisioned this band. We wish Miguel nothing but the best in his personal life and with his other bands. He’ll always be a part of the Sonic Storm family, and we’re excited to see what he accomplishes next. Gracias Miguelito, ha sido un placer!” Miguel Ángel Sarmiento also shared his thoughts on the transition via his own Facebook page, expressing pride in his time with Sonic Storm and gratitude toward the band and its fans. "As some of you may know, Sonic Storm and I have parted ways. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and grateful for all the support that you guys have given me and the band. I am in eternal gratitude with Sonic Storm members, Paul, Karl, and Frans, who have been incredibly supportive in every aspect of my life. See you in the mosh, next time I’ll be joining you guys in the pit. Thank you, Sonic Storm! ” The decision marks a return to Sonic Storm’s origins as a three-piece thrash outfit, a direction the band says reflects their original vision. While the split brings the end of an era, both parties emphasized the enduring camaraderie and mutual respect between them. Fans of Sonic Storm and Miguel Ángel Sarmiento can look forward to seeing both continue to thrive, with the band evolving as a trio and Miguel remaining active in his musical pursuits. As Sonic Storm put it, Miguel will “always be a part of the Sonic Storm family.” In the meantime, both Sonic Storm and Miguel's other band, No Humano, have been announced to perform alongside Damaged & Co at their annual event, "Damaged & Co Present: Cirque Du Carnival," taking place at The Garage on Saturday, February 22nd.
