- X-Vandals
X-Vandals facebook.com < Back The early 1980's were dominated by political tension throughout Europe and Malta was no exception. Towns and villages had gangs of teens ready to destabilize society and in Tarxien, something was coming to a boil with young metalheads disturbing the peace at 'The Bandli’ and running havoc in the narrow streets of this quiet village. A group of teens including 5 musicians tried to form a band!! Ray Micallef (Hamiemu) assumed the responsibility to form the army, Ray Schembri (Il-Bahri) came with the name, VANDALS. Mysterious circumstances occurred simultaneously to forge the name that would become every mother's nightmare. Mark Crusher joined the band in the beginning of 1984 and soon the band started writing material and played 2 gigs in Tarxien, of which one ended with the police arresting Il-Bahri concerning some violent accidents which occurred a week before. In 1985 the band played the Malta Sajf Festival and the Maltese music scene was shocked by the fast speed metal riffs the Vandals introduced to a generally laid-back audience relaxing with drink and pot. The Vandals were loud and fast, and the band started, after some months gaining, momentum by gigging frequently. Soon they had a big following and the concerts were selling during which the crowd started the first slam diving from the stage. This reputation solidified the band's participation in the much-awaited Malta Sajf festival for years, while playing gigs around the island. During that time, the band recorded some tapes, which were only distributed amongst friends. Mark left the band in 1989 and moved to the UK which although a major setback, the band managed to eventually find replacements in Albert Bell on bass and Rusty on vocals. The band also recruited Mark's brother Al Crusher to join for a heavier sound. With this line up the band started to write new material and prepared a set up for a number of shows titled BACK THROUGH THE AGES with Barbarian style of clothing, backdrops and a heavier Thrash Metal style. At this time someone brought up the idea of a Thrash Metal Live Opera and BEDROCK 1991-2091 was conceived, a fiction story of Modern Federal Europe dominated by wars and conflicts in which the band played 6 new songs. The cast was made from other bands musicians and people from the Vandals’ concerts crowd. During those years, the band released a video titled 'Crusading Sinners', and a demo tape called 'The Rise of Evil', which they tape traded in many countries around the world. Soon after Albert, Rusty and Aldo left the band to start other projects, while Josem on vocals, James on bass and Jason on guitar were recruited and the band moved into a more Thrash/Death Metal style. With this line up the band played 2 gigs in Torri Tigne, a venue they weren't allowed to play before, because of a policy made by the AST organisation. Around 1994 the band went on a hiatus. Ray Micallef, Ray Schembri and James Spiteri continued to gig with Abstrass, a band formed by Erich Azzopardi in the 80's. Micallef also played in Lord Adder together with ex Vandals Mark Crusher, who moved back from the UK and his brother Al. Schembri started the anarcho punk band SUBCULTURE and RAGE AGAINST SOCIETY + many other punk bands! During an ABSTRASS band practice, Rusty paid a visit and came up with the idea of a Vandals revamp, to which the band agreed after some more meetings and beer. In 2003 the band changed the name to X-VANDALS and work on what was the band's full-length debut album 'Erosion Of Our Liberties' commenced. The album was influenced by Thrash/HC Punk both lyrically and musically and the band played gigs and festivals frequently. A couple of years later the band recorded the second album 'Breach The Silence', which was released on 13th June 2009. At this stage the band decided to add another guitarist for a more heavier sound, and the choice fell on Mark Azzopardi (ex-Martyrium). With Mark the band flirted with a darker music style and laid the foundations for the next album titled 'Exhume The Truth', which was released in 2016, when Mark had already left the band and went to live in Sweden. 2018 was the band's 35th anniversary. DJ Noel Mifsud (ONE Radio/allRock Radio insisted that a celebration is a must! Ray Micallef came up with the idea to ask Albert Bell (ex Vandals bassist) to join and play on some tracks from the 1990's catalogue as a guest. Their first practice was exciting and felt as if it was 1990 again. During this celebration Mark Crusher and Aldo joined the band for a set from the 1980's catalogue, while the other guests were drummer Karen 'Grinder' (Delirium), daughter of Ray Micallef and a performance by Kyle and Nick Spiteri, sons of X-Vandals bassist James. During the night the band released their 4th album a compilation titled, 35 Years Of Metal 1983-2018, and the 35th anniversary t-shirts to mark the date. This night could not have happened without the help and support of the band's friend Mark Manicolo from Team Jalen kickboxing club. Organisation was up to REJECTS.COM , who organised a night which will forever be annexed in the story of Maltese metal history. It was a milestone for the band and on Ray Micallef's idea, the band asked Albert Bell to join the band permanently as their guitarist, marking the beginning of a new chapter, with the band immersed into writing new music and playing live around the island. Two appearances at the Farsons Beer Festival led to the release of the DVD 'Who We Are', in 2018 with the support and patience of Alan Zammit, one of the band's videographers. During the Covid-19 period, apathy was haunting X-Vandals, but with the perseverance of Ray Micallef, the band came out of that period with determination to start working steadily on the next album. 2023 marks the band's 40th anniversary and the release of the 5th X-Vandals album. - Valiantis
Valiantis facebook.com/Valiantismt < Back Valiantis is a band hailing from Marsa, formed in December 2018. The initial seeds of the band were sown when members Baġiġu and Jonathan, who previously played together in "Black State Believers," reunited to jam after the former band disbanded. Their harmonic resonance soon attracted the vocals of André 'Judas' Mallia, and the rhythm of Jean Pierre Gatt on drums. The core ensemble thus established, continued to play together till 2020, post which Glen Cassar on guitar, Lorna Fiorini and Alison Gatt on backing vocals and keyboards respectively, joined the troupe, enriching the band’s sonic tapestry. The musical style of Valiantis is a unique blend, mainly rooted in classic heavy, power, and thrash metal. However, their sound doesn't stop here; it extends to incorporate elements from a myriad of genres including cinematic and orchestral music, modern metal, pop, and at times, veers into the realms of gothic and electro. The classic heavy metal genre continues to be a major influence on the band. The name 'Valiantis' emerged from a meticulous quest for a moniker that resonated with the band's ethos and style. Derived from the word "Valiant," signifying bravery, and suffixed with 'is' reminiscent of a domain or place, Valiantis metaphorically stands for 'Land of the Brave.' Much of Valiantis’ music narrates tales from a post-apocalyptic world, portraying events leading to such an apocalypse. There's also a reflection on the metal music genre, life's journey, its inherent challenges, and the valor to overcome the fear of failure through their compositions. Their first public performance was held at the Garage in September 2021, a delay from the originally planned date in October 2020 due to the pandemic. Despite the restrictions allowing only a hundred attendees, the event saw a full house, an encouraging testament to the local following the band had garnered. As of now, Valiantis has not ventured into recording, as their journey has been extensively about live performances, which are often sought after. They harbor plans to take a respite from live performances to focus on recording their original material, sufficient for a full-length album. The November 2021 performance at the Epic Camp and their participation in the Rock/Metal City Festival in March 2022 at City Theatre, Valletta, are among the memorable performances cited by the band. They share a camaraderie with other bands and artists, often supporting or being supported in gigs, and inviting guest artists on stage. Valiantis looks forward to their upcoming performances at the Epic Camp on November 25th and supporting X-Vandals at the Garage in Żebbuġ on December 8th. While they don’t have an ambitious long-term roadmap, their journey is about enjoying the ride, taking one step at a time, and continuing to do what they love most—creating resonant music that strikes a chord with the audience. - Rising Sunset
Rising Sunset < Back RISING SUNSET is a symphonic blackened death metal band hailing from the island nation of Malta, founded by Carlo Calamatta in 2001. The band is known for their unique blend of brutal and melodic riffs, orchestration, and intricate songwriting that takes listeners on a journey through mysticism, divinity, and the profoundness of life. RISING SUNSET released their debut EP, RHEMA, in 2006, showcasing their commitment to delivering a meaningful message through their music. In 2012, the band released their first full-length album, EQUINOX, which was widely regarded as a milestone in symphonic power metal. With EQUINOX, RISING SUNSET found the perfect balance between symphony and metal, cementing their place in the Maltese metal scene. After the release of EQUINOX, the band underwent a major lineup change and shifted their musical style to symphonic gothic metal. With their third release, DECRETUM, RISING SUNSET demonstrated their ability to deliver powerful guitar riffs, darker lyrics, and the introduction of male growls. DECRETUM was another successful album for the band and an important stepping stone in their evolution. In 2020, RISING SUNSET released their latest album, DE MYESTERIUM TENEBRIS, which represents a matured genre that has evolved to symphonic blackened death metal. The album takes listeners on a dark, apocalyptic, and prophetic journey through brutal, black, and death metal riffs, melancholic melodies, growls and screams, solid drumming, and elaborate songwriting. DE MYESTERIUM TENEBRIS is akin to the 'Book of Revelation,' offering a glimpse into the stages of metamorphosis that will happen on Earth as the souls of humanity align with the supreme being or are condemned for eternity. The band's lineup includes Carlo Calamatta on rhythm and solo guitars, death growls, and drum compositions; Joseph Camilleri on rhythm guitars and black metal scream vocals; Clifford Smith on bass, and Ian Spiteri on keyboards. RISING SUNSET is signed to WormHole Death, a record label known for supporting underground and independent metal bands. RISING SUNSET's commitment to delivering a meaningful message through their music, their unique blend of symphony and metal, and their willingness to evolve and experiment with different styles have made them one of the most respected metal bands in Malta and beyond. - Tryst Arcane
Tryst Arcane facebook.com < Back Tryst Arcane is a duo from Malta, formed by Alexia (vocals – Memento Nostri) and Julian (keys -Nomad Son). Taking Alexia’s ethereal vocals and layering them over haunting cinematic soundscapes, organ sounds or brooding piano riffs, the duo strikes a deviant balance between traditional song standards and music that you’d find accompanying a dramatic moment on screen. ‘Minimal Dark’ is a term that the duo coined for this genre of music that is particularly pronounced in their debut album, AUTUMN. Being it shorn of percussive instruments but rather composed of only two elements, that of keys and vox, this album is imbued with a solemn dreaminess and serenity. The Tryst Arcane project was reimagined with the introduction of the 3rd element which will be featuring in their upcoming album, Sun of Other Days. Their return sees an alliance with Emanuel Portelli ( Victims of Creation, Hemplifier) and his Mediterranean-inspired guitar tunes which led to conceptualise their compositions as an extended version of their minimalistic approach. While Julian’s synths hover over prog/post and space rock territories, the lyrics and chants transpire from a deep nostalgic place within a mystical atmosphere and metaphorical parallelism with science fiction’s time and space travel. Tryst Arcane have composed 35 minutes of conceptual and heterodox music that seamlessly entwines their various influences into an immersive experience that represents their artistic expression. “Music creation of our like will find a place in the hearts of a niche audience who feel the honesty that is within it and absorb what they need at that moment from it.” – Tryst Arcane Band Members Julian Grech Keyboards Julian Grech Alexia Baldacchino Vocals Alexia Baldacchino Discography Date Title Type Listen Buy the band's merch Autumn [CD] | Tryst Arcane More Details Autumn [Vinyl] (Graphite Limited Edition) | Tryst Arcane More Details Follow the band Previous Band Next Band

Rogue < Back Rogue is an electrifying new band that brings together a diverse array of musical talents. The lineup includes singer Juan Xerri from Animamortua and backing singer Valerie Cassar, known for her work with the Iron Maiden Tribute band as well as Oblique Visions and Dislost. Adding a touch of vintage rock is guitarist Adrian Mercieca, formerly of the prog rock band Sphinx. The rhythm section features bassist Philip "Bagigu" Camilleri, who currently performs with Valiantis, Rock Troupers, and the Iron Maiden Tribute band, and drummer Luciano Borg, an ex-member of Ivory Cross with a rich history in bands like Kraken, Scimitar, and Frantic. Andre Schembri on Keyboards, formerly with Ivory Cross and now with Stoned, a Rolling Stones tribute band, completes the lineup. The name "Rogue" was suggested by Luciano Borg, who explained, "Rogue means 'an unprincipled person with savage or destructive tendencies.' We thought the meaning was appropriate to the band being wild and destructive in nature." The band's origins trace back to jam sessions between Luciano and Adrian in a garage. They eventually invited other members to join, fostering a strong chemistry and a shared passion for music. After honing their sound with covers, they made their live debut at The Garage, sharing the stage with Rankin. This debut performance marked the beginning of their journey, characterized by high energy and a raw, powerful sound. - The Rifffs MT
The Rifffs MT < Back Every band has a story to tell and legendary cult band ’The Rifffs‘ (not to be mistaken with ‘The Riffs’) are definitely a band worthy of that story. - Scarlet Pimpernel
Scarlet Pimpernel < Back Scarlet Pimpernel, a band originating from the scenic town of Mellieha in Malta, was officially formed in 2019. However, the roots of the band can be traced back to 2014 when Chris and Jessica Grech, the founding members, became a couple. United by a shared love for music, their casual jamming sessions evolved into a more focused endeavor, culminating in the formation of the band. Jessica Grech serves as the vocal powerhouse of the band, contributing not only her voice but also her skills in lyrics and songwriting. Chris Grech is the versatile backbone of the band, handling multiple roles from playing guitars and bass to songwriting and production. Together, they create a unique blend of dark vintage rock, heavy rock, and blues rock, drawing inspiration from iconic bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Rattles, The Doors, and Moody Blues. The name Scarlet Pimpernel is more than just a label; it's a symbol that encapsulates the essence of the band. Inspired by a flower known as 'harira hamra' in Maltese, which has become increasingly rare, the name reflects the band's affinity for nostalgia and vintage elements. The flower's faded orangey-red hue further complements the band's aesthetic and musical style. Musically, Scarlet Pimpernel aims to convey a range of emotions and themes. Their songs often exude a dark yet nostalgic vibe, touching upon various subjects from folk tales and historical events like the gruesome episode of 1551, to more universal life experiences that offer a message of encouragement. In terms of discography, the band has been quite active since its inception. They released singles "March of the Trolls" and "Breaking the Spell" in 2020, followed by "1551" in 2021, which also saw a music video release. Their self-titled album, released in 2021, received nominations for Top Album (Non-Maltese language) and Top Music Video (Non-Maltese language) at the Muzika Mod Iehor ma' Toni Sant (MMI 2021). While Scarlet Pimpernel has not yet ventured into collaborations as a band, both Jessica and Chris have individually contributed to other musical projects. Specifically, they were featured as guests on Albert Bell's Sacro Sanctus album "Sword of Fierbois" on the song "Ember Eyes." Additionally, Chris has been instrumental in recording for a variety of artists, including Frenzy Mono, Nomad Son, Joe S. Grech, Forsaken, and several others. Currently unsigned to any record label, the band is focused on its long-term goal of continuing to create music that resonates with them and their audience. - Sceptocrypt
Sceptocrypt < Back The original Sceptocrypt formed on the island of Malta in 1992. A band from the smallest European nation yet with big intentions – to forge a sound distinctively its own, an extreme metal (at a time where the tag was not yet penned to define bands cross-bordering death, doom, black metal and more) looking out of its own box (embracing non-metal styles, but without loosing its abrasive edge!), its members ardently into the 90s underground scene running Rancid Soup zine & radio show , and music scholars alike, always keen for original sounds, as inspirations and as their own. Releasing only a demo & a rehearsal tape in its timespan to 1999, Sceptocrypt’s idea was received warmly by the leading press of the time – like Aardschock (NL), Fight Amnesia (DE), Ill Literature (USA), Koito (IT), MorticiaNumskull (NL), Dusk Woerot (Colombia), Death Bite (Lith), Fanfare (BE), Brutalism.com (NL), Eternal Darkness (USA), etc. – with worldwide reviews as “demo of the month” “one of the best demos of 1996” “ALL labels interested in progressive extreme metal please check in with Sceptocrypt” “not your everyday kind of metal” “a hell of a musical masterpiece” “one of the most brilliant demotapes I have heard in years” “Sceptocrypt have good solutions for their music, something that the majority of underground bands have not” “don’t know where to put this band in, maybe a big positive plus-point for them” “recommended for a zine editor with 5000 bands yet no-one sounding like Sceptocrypt” “such different and sophisticated music”. There was also label interest back then. Some, like Holy Records (FR), defined Sceptocrypt as “experimental music, very well structured, unbelievable!!!”, whereas non-metal label Bliss Records (UK) opined that “death metal usually does absolutely nothing for me, but Sceptocrypt are more melodic, innovative and original than I was expecting”. Others, in turn, were interested to hear more, so much so that Sceptocrypt self-financed and recorded a full-length !26 Hrs 72 mins …. the need to differ) in 1999. Sadly, bad luck stroke, and Sceptocrypt disbanded later that year due to a string of adverse effects (including financial), with this CD never released or promoted to any label/zine. In fact, apart from some tracks featuring in compilations (Underground Media, Ematofagia, and Mass Metal), only few close contacts had listened to the whole !26 Hrs 72 Mins …. the need to differ) when it was recorded. But this was mended later in 2014 when it was made available for all at our Bandcamp , also to co-incide with the an attempt to revive Sceptocrypt yet again with a different sound, this time in London (where Malcolm now resides)! Not being able to complete a line-up, this was put on ice in 2015. Despite all odds, the idea of reviving Sceptocrypt never left founding member Malcolm, and since late 2022 he started jamming some of the 2014 songs & newer ideas with different musicians. Near to 2 LPs running time of music have been composed, one of which will be shared in 2024 in the form of “The Wards Outside”. - The Myth
The Myth Etienne Farrell < Back Dion Farrell and Mark Galea formed The Myth in September 1990. The band's first live appearance was two months later, during which they performed two cover versions. Their early style is described by some as 'bridging American melodic rock with the more classic European influences' (The Times, November 1996). Such tracks include Master Of Death, The Anthem and the self-titled The Myth. These songs featured long guitar solos with powerful drumming and melodic bass lines. During this period the band released two singles, Can't Stop The Fire and Midnight. Although both singles were aired on radio stations and played on TV channels, they were not released for sale to the public. From 1996 The Myth began experimenting with a completely different sound. Panpipes and tambourines replaced the long guitar solos, and the songs became quieter and more acoustic in nature. Wise Men and The Truth are just two of such songs. In early 2005, The Myth ventured into the commercial scene. Although written in 1996, Sworn Independent was finally recorded in 2007 and was released as a single in the same year. The success of the track led to more radio-friendly tracks such as Star and Animal being written. Animal was the band's first single to have an official music video. Further radio hits followed with How Does It Feel? and Dreams. On 8 August 2011, The Myth released its first album. Dreams, which featured all the singles that the band released. In November of the same year the band was nominated for the Best Website Award in the Malta Music Awards. Referred to as the Pop Rock era, it was obvious right from the launch of the single Sadness in your Eyes in 2012 that the band was once again playing a completely different sound. A few months later this single was followed up by a dance remix version by DJ/Producer DJ Toby. Both versions of this single were featured in the movie Silhouette in 2013. Southern Scum @rocknroll_malta < Back Representing the knife's edge of the south, Southern Scum are hell bent on bringing rock and roll back to Malta, southern style. Formed in 2021, they are a 4-piece band whose original riffs are Hard Rock and Heavy Blues influenced, with their own virile twist that will tear the house down whether it's at a local bar or large scale event.
