- Beangrowers
Beangrowers n/a < Back Beangrowers, an indie rock band, is known for its unique blend of indie rock, punk, and goth influences. The trio, composed of Alison Galea (vocals, guitar), Mark Sansone (bass), and Ian Schranz (drums, electronic noise), formed in the 1990s and quickly gained a reputation for their energetic sound and engaging lyrics. Originally from St. Julian's, Malta, the band has a strong following in Europe, particularly in Germany, where they released music through Rough Trade’s German division. With Galea’s distinctive, subtly British-accented vocals and a mix of guitar-driven melodies and quirky keyboard sounds, Beangrowers produced hits like "José Clemente" and "The Priest," the latter of which was featured in Wim Wenders’ film Land of Plenty. Their music is inspired by alternative giants like Joy Division, The Pixies, and Depeche Mode, while their lyrics often reflect social themes. In 2019, they released "Dystopia," a track that critiques the impact of modern industrialization, accompanied by a DIY-style music video that evokes a retro feel. Throughout their career, Beangrowers has released four studio albums, including 48K (1999) and Not in a Million Lovers (2008), maintaining a unique place in the indie rock scene with a passionate fanbase that continues to grow. - Drowning Sorrows
Drowning Sorrows JM Photography < Back Formed in the spring of 2019, Drowning Sorrows emerged from a familial bond steeped in a shared passion for good music. The band's inception took place when Gordon O’Reilly, alongside his brother-in-law, Raymond Galea, and nephew, Dylan Ray Galea, decided to transform their familial ties and mutual love for music into a cohesive musical project. Gordon, taking the helm as the guitarist and lead vocalist, is complemented by Dylan on the bass and backing vocals, with Raymond anchoring the rhythm on drums. Drowning Sorrows is a testament to the timeless appeal of rock 'n' roll, embodying the spirit of the genre as fervently as icons like Lemmy famously declared for Motorhead. Their musical influences span a broad spectrum, from the foundational rock 'n' roll of the '50s through the evolutionary sounds of the '60s garage rock, '70s punk, and glam, to the '80s thrash, post-punk, and psychobilly. The '90s alternative scene and the eclectic mix from the 2000s onwards also play a significant role in shaping their sound, creating a rich tapestry of influences that define their music. The band's name, Drowning Sorrows, speaks to the transformative power of music, offering an escape to listeners and inviting them to momentarily forget their troubles. This ethos is mirrored in the themes of their songs, which often revolve around perseverance and confronting personal issues over time, resonating with fans on a deeply personal level. Drowning Sorrows marked their public debut in 2021 at the Rock/Metal City event held in Valletta GWU, a momentous occasion that set the stage for their journey ahead. While the band has yet to formalize their discography with albums or EPs, they have taken a modern approach to sharing their music, releasing weekly content on their YouTube channel and major streaming platforms. This strategy not only keeps their fans engaged but also showcases their evolving production skills, with a mix of covers and original tracks. Despite not having received any formal awards or recognitions yet, Drowning Sorrows has already created memorable live experiences, notably their performance at Diamond City in Rabat, described as a mid-summer meltdown. Their participation in the Farsons Beerfest in 2023 marked their first festival appearance, setting the stage for future live events and tours. Looking ahead, Drowning Sorrows is focused on self-recording and producing their material, aiming to eventually self-produce an album to a high standard. With weekly releases on YouTube, they are not only working through their extensive back catalogue but also honing their production skills. The band aspires to tour abroad and expand their fan base, dedicating themselves to delivering authentic and impactful music to a global audience. For fans and followers of Drowning Sorrows, the future holds a promise of more original music, continuous engagement through their digital platforms, and the potential for live performances that capture the energy and essence of rock 'n' roll. As they navigate the challenges and triumphs of the music industry, Drowning Sorrows remains a beacon for perseverance, familial bonds, and the enduring power of music. In late 2024, drummer Raymond Galea departed, with Morsrot's Alex Fenech stepping in on drums for the live shows through the end of the year. - About Us | Melodija
Our Story The idea of Melodija came into our mind through a life experience followed by a brief moment of realization. One of our founders once attended a gig and genuinely enjoyed the performance of the bands there. She tried to purchase the merch of her favorite bands through their website and social media only to learn that most of them needed a digital presence. This led her to realize how hard it must be for local bands and artists to grow without a platform to promote their work. While so many local musicians struggle to establish their name and earn appraisal through years and years of hard work, there are hardly any platforms to empower their talent. That’s when the concept of building a digital space as Melodija.eu originated. Our Vision Founded by a group of like-minded music enthusiasts, Priscilla, James and Noel, Melodija.eu is the digital hub for anything related to music. We are an online community that provides local music artists a platform to unleash their creative potential and showcase their talent to the world. We aim to support and uplift local bands and musicians and make them feel their voices are being heard. Through putting efforts into building a solid digital space, we envision a future where local bands and artists of Malta emerge and gain recognition. We strive to create a platform where you can effortlessly discover old and new musical bands, learn about different artists, view performances and events, stay updated with the latest news and releases, find recording studios and rehearsal garages, shop musical instruments and bands’merch, and much more. We are on our way to creating a surreal world of music that you can’t help falling in love with. Thus, we want to become the go-to digital space for music lovers, known for empowering local music and talent. Meet the Team Noel's journey in the music industry began in the early '90s, marking the start of a decades-long career driven by a passion for rock and dedication to Malta's music scene. Starting as a co-presenter on the "Rock Café Rock Show" at One Radio from 1991 to 1993, he laid the foundation for his multifaceted career. As the resident DJ at Harlequin Rock Club in Paceville from 1992 to 1994, Noel became a pivotal figure in Malta's vibrant nightlife, setting the stage for his future endeavors. In 2009, Noel expanded his influence by founding Sensible Noise distro and co-founding Prog The Islands, initiatives aimed at promoting Maltese talent and progressive rock. He managed and advised bands such as Twenty-Six Other-Worlds, Sepia, and Colourblind, offering his seasoned insights to guide their musical journeys. His passion for radio broadcasting was reignited with "Rock Moods" on One Radio, showcasing local music talent since 2009. Noel's contributions to the Maltese music industry are extensive. He organized charity events like Rock For Haiti and celebrated milestones with the Mirage comeback and the X-Tend 35th Anniversary Show. His work in event organization and music journalism, including judging at the Malta Music Awards and contributing to the Malta Doom Metal Festival, has left a lasting impact on the industry. In 2021, Noel joined Melodija.eu as an Advisor, Administrator, and Content Contributor. In this role, he engages with artists to feature their bios and merchandise, writes press releases, and updates the community on the latest Maltese music news. Noel's efforts at Melodija bridge the gap between artists and audiences, ensuring the preservation and celebration of Malta's rich musical heritage. Through his dedication and passion, Noel has played a pivotal role in nurturing and promoting Malta's local music scene, making it more accessible and vibrant for all involved. His journey through the Maltese music industry is a testament to his enduring commitment and the significant impact he continues to make. Priscilla's musical journey began in childhood, serenaded by the radio and notably shaped by Noel, a family friend. He introduced her to iconic bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden, sparking a passion for music that would define her future. Attending local gigs and festivals, often with Noel and his wife, Priscilla was immersed in the Maltese music scene's talent and energy, inspiring the foundation of Melodija. Melodija's inception was fueled by a moment at a 2021 festival when Priscilla sought a band T-shirt, only to find limited online presence for Maltese artists. This realization drove her to create a digital space to showcase and make local music more accessible. With Noel's industry connections and James's strategic insights, the trio turned the concept into a reality, overcoming challenges to engage artists and the community. Priscilla's role at Melodija is multifaceted, focusing on keeping the platform dynamic and engaging. She oversees website maintenance, content updates including events, merch, and artist profiles, and manages social media to promote local talent. Behind the scenes, she analyzes traffic and coordinates with artists to enrich the user experience. Her vision for Melodija is to establish it as the ultimate hub for the Maltese music community, offering everything from band member recruitment to resources like instrument shops and music teachers. Priscilla aims to enhance accessibility and support within the music scene, embodying her passion and commitment to Maltese music. From the beginning, James showed a strong talent for business and a deep love for music, especially Maltese Rock & Metal. His work in the music industry is characterised by thoughtful planning and a strong dedication to supporting local artists. As the manager of bands like Frenzy Mono and Nomad Son, James has been key in helping gain international recognition. His passion for music is also shown by his frequent attendance at concerts and festivals in Malta, (before he had children ) where he deeply engaged with the local music scene. This direct experience gave James a thorough understanding of the music scene's needs and desires, driving his efforts to help it grow. Besides managing bands, James has been important in organising events and has been a central member of the Malta Doom Metal committee. James's work with Melodija started when Priscilla introduced her initial idea. Seeing the potential in her concept for a website for Maltese artists, James quickly helped broaden the project. He was crucial in adding the events calendar feature to Melodija, which has become very popular among users for finding music events in Malta. As a pivotal figure in shaping Melodija, James continues to lend his strategic insights and business savvy to the platform. His forward-thinking has not only enhanced Melodija's features but also ensured its sustainability and relevance in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. James's contributions are a testament to his belief in the power of innovation and strategy to foster a vibrant music community. Today, James is still a major force at Melodija, always looking for ways to enhance and grow the platform. His goal for Melodija is to make it a comprehensive centre that not only highlights Maltese artists but also acts as a guide for the local music industry. Reach out to us Get In Touch. - Different Strings
Different Strings < Back Different Strings is among the best prog rock bands from the Maltese Islands. Although not very much on the front line of the commercial music scene, Chris Mallia, the mind behind the band, was always involved into music. Chris has been learning the guitar, piano and music theory since the early nineties achieving various certificates of music from the London College of Music including the LLCM (TD) in guitar teaching from RGT. "I love all kind of music although the rock scene was always on top of everything and being more selective with prog-rock in particular", Chris said. Prog is very much alive again with hundreds of new bands emerging from all over the world and surviving a band of this genre of music takes some stamina and dedication. Chris continued "I was involved in various bands and recordings. I was a session musician for the metal band Achiral in ’98 and been part of the voices choir in 2000 with the recording “Voices - Jazz afloat”. That same year I created the solo project with the name of Different Strings which is the main focus today." Released first CD single “Dead man walking” in 2004 and debut album “…it’s only the beginning” in 2007 having the voice of Alan Mayo (ex-Limestone Kick). From 2008, Different Strings started the ambitious project of the next concept album titled “The sounds of silence” with the release of “Victims of love” EP in 2010. The idea was to be a double disc album but financially was very difficult. This project, “The sounds of silence” part I and II were released separately. In November 2011 the album was released having a DS live appearance. "The sounds of silence - part II" was released in March 2015. The band continued to play live for about 4 years with great success locally. Winners of the Hard Rock Rising competition in 2014 and followed by many others live events. In between the 2 albums there were some other releases including "legacy of war" single version and "Dead man walking 10th anniversary edition" with the participation from the live lineup musicians at that time. Throughout those years there were some lineup changes. The musicians that helped the band both in recordings and live events were Alan Mayo, Errol Cutajar and Paul Sky vocalists, Trevor Catania, Johann Tabone, Dean Montanaro bass, Kurt Aquilina guitars, Karl Dingli and Julian Mallia Drums and David Ciantar keyboards. Different Strings continues to have various internationally positive reviews of album releases which can be viewed in the reviews section. Among those important achievements, we had a review on the UK rock magazine Fireworks including the track ‘3 o’clock overture’ on their free CD in September 2012. In the same month we were short listed to be featured in a more popular prog magazine, Classic rock’s PROG as a freebie for their first ever Prog awards. The following month’s edition of Prog featured a review of the band. More magazines reviewed the band including the Spanish This is Rock magazine and the more prog dedicated French magazine Big Bang.Different Strings played live at various important venues around the Maltese islands including the Prog the Islands Prog Rock festival, Hard Rock Rising competition in 2013 and 2014 being voted best band on the Malta Hard Rock Facebook page and winners in 2014, Music from elsewhere, Puttinu Cares marathon, Simon's fest, Farsons Beer fest and Notte Bianca. For various reasons the band had a break in performing live at the moment but there is still work going on. In February 2017 the band released the reissue of the debut album "...it's only the beginning" totally remixed and remastered with some new added material. The album includes a new version of the instrumental track "Beyond infinity" and also 4 live bonus tracks. The fourth album, which is entitled "The sands of time" was planned to be released in 2020 but due to COVID19, a number of problems arose and had to be postponed and eventually released on 31st of March 2021. From this album two singles were already released, an alternate version of the title track "The sands of time" and "Ten dollar Love". The latter features the voice of the talented Annemarie Spiteri, vocalist of the Maltese prog band Viper soup complex. This album features none the less but the voice of Italian singer Andrea Casali from bands Astra and Icefish. For those unfamiliar with Icefish, this band consists of legendary drummer Virgil Donati, guitarist Marco Sfogli and keyboardist and producer Alex Argento. Andrea delivered stunning vocals to complement this prog rock masterpiece. “The sands of time” is considered to be the best work from Different Strings due to its compositional grandeur and an increase in sales and reviews. The whole album was scored and presented to the University of West London and it was awarded the FLCM in composition in November 2021. Since no live performances are scheduled for the near future, more music is being composed. In January 2024, Different Strings released a single entitled “Words unspoken”. This track is totally instrumental and features the ex-Dream Theater member and keyboard player, Derek Sherinian. Derek’s playing needs no introduction and his performance on this track is exceptional and raised the bar higher in terms of quality. More music is in the pipeline but there are no concise plans of when and how album number 5 will be released. - Lord Adder
Lord Adder facebook.com/LordAdder/ < Back Lord Adder made a comeback in 2019 and they haven’t looked back since. They are on a mission to inject their strong dose of heavy metal into the music scene and they’re not planning on slowing down anytime soon. The band was one of the most followed bands in the ’90s, filling every venue they were playing at and were supporting acts to big names like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Saxon, Girls School, and Smokie. They were the first local band to release a live album which also included a VHS of the live recording studio session which was filmed in front of an audience, making it the first of its kind during that time. The band to fans’ dismay was dismantled and all members went their separate ways and ventured onto other projects. Fast forward to 2019 and frontman, musician, and songwriter Mark Spiteri wanted to reform the band this time with a slight change in lineup and with a heavier sound than that which they had bowed out of the scene with. Lord Adder’s lineup now features original members Mark Spiteri (Songwriter, frontman, and bass player) and Raymond Micallef (drummer) plus new members Robert Tomasuolo and Charles Muscat both on guitars. Just before covid hit they were part of the lineup at the warm-up party for the renowned event ‘Shellshock Festival’ and more gigs were lined up for 2020/2021 however like many artists alike everything was halted and put on hold. Frontman Mark Spiteri tells us that he used the time of the pandemic to write some of his best material yet. ‘’The pandemic gave me the time to focus more on songwriting without all the distractions and life in general getting in the way. I wrote over 16 songs and as soon as restrictions eased and we could get back to rehearsing, the songs came to life with the rest of the band’’. He goes on to tell us ‘’ We could have waited and released the albums separately but with all the doom and gloom going on the world right now we wanted to give a glimpse of hope and courage to all those listening through the best way we know how – our music’’ Band Members Robert Tomasuolo Guitars Robert Tomasuolo Ray "Hamiemu" Micallef Drums Ray "Hamiemu" Micallef Mark Spiteri Bass, Vocals Mark Spiteri Discography Date Title Type Listen Buy the band's merch Follow the band Previous Band Next Band
