  • Geistmaschine

Geistmaschine Maria Baldacchino < Back Geistmaschine originated from the creative aftermath following Timothy and Michael’s departure from their previous band, Goldstein. They were soon joined by Gabriel in May 2023, and together, they began a new musical journey. The trio, each bringing a unique set of influences and passions, formed a cohesive unit driven by a desire to explore and redefine the boundaries of post-metal music. Timothy, the band’s guitarist and effects aficionado, draws inspiration from the intricate narratives of graphic novels and the expansive sounds of bands like Russian Circles and We Lost the Sea. Michael, the bassist, incorporates his love for cinema and dark, atmospheric music from groups such as Ulver and Mogwai, enriching the band's soundscapes. Gabriel, on drums, brings a blend of grindcore punk and experimental music, adding an unpredictable edge to the music with his noisy, chaotic bursts. The name Geistmaschine, which translates to 'Ghost Machine,' was inspired by the haunting atmospheres of the German television series ‘Dark’. This name holds personal significance for each member, embodying the spirit of their musical and thematic explorations which often delve into themes of loss, intense change, and the vastness of space. Currently, Geistmaschine is preparing for their debut full-length album, focusing on refining their songs and live performances. With aspirations to sign with a record label and tour internationally, the band is poised to make significant strides in the music world, inviting listeners into their evocative and otherworldly sonic universe. • Forsaken

Forsaken Michael Sammut < Back Forsaken, one of Southern Europe’s longest standing and premier doom metal outfits, were formed in 1990 under the moniker "Blind Alley". Based in Malta, the band adopted the epithet "Forsaken" in 1991, opting for a resounding doom metal soundscape in the process. The band released their debut demo "Requiem" toward the end of that same year. In 1993 the band signed to Arkham Productions (France) for the release of a 7" Ep entitled "Virtues of Sanctity". Between Feb – March 1994, together with French thrash metal band Oddmongers, the band toured France and Spain to promote the Ep's release. Forsaken moved to local label Storm Records for their debut full-length "Evermore" (1997). After a lengthy absence from the studio the band returned to Temple Studios (Malta) to record a cover version of "Neon Knights", which was featured in the Black Sabbath MK II (Dio-era) tribute called "Dehumanized Witch" (Mid-West Metal Records - USA). In 2002 the band released a three-track promo demo, which attracted considerable label interest. In the same year the band signed to Golden Lake Productions (Scotland, UK) for the long-awaited "Iconoclast" Ep. Forsaken’s second full-length album called "Anima Mundi" (also released on Golden Lake Productions), was issued in February 2004 to widespread critical acclaim and remains the band’s best-selling release to date. This album was also licensed for a CD re-press on Russia’s CD Maximum in 2005 for an exclusive Russia and Baltic States deal. Golden Lake Productions also re-released the band’s 1996 debut album “Evermore” in early 2005. During the summer of 2006 the band relocated to Temple Studios for the recording of their third full-length and most widely acclaimed full-length album to date -“Dominaeon”. Focusing on a conceptual lyrical theme dealing with man’s pathway to spirituality and divine revelation and with famed Polish artist Jowita Kaminska (Exodus, Manilla Road, Emerald, Dantesco, Attacker etc) handling cover artwork duties, “Dominaeon” has been applauded by various critics as one of the milestones in contemporary doom metal, even clinching the No 1 spot in December 2005’s studio test by Heavy Mag (Germany). All the band’s catalogue on Golden Lake Productions were released in subsequent on vinyl (in DLP format) on the German label Immortal Vinyl Records featuring various exclusive bonus tracks. The band’s 2009 album “After the Fall” was released on Sweden’s I Hate Records on both CD and vinyl 12” format and gathered strong reactions in Malta and worldwide. This was followed up with the release of a 12” Split EP with Finland’s Fall of the Idols (on vinyl only) on the same label in 2010 titled “Tales of Doom and Woe”. For their fifth album Forsaken titled “Pentateuch” the band switch to Denmark’s Mighty Music Records, released in digital, CD and vinyl (LP) format. The album focuses on a thematic lyrical concept based on the first five books of the Old Testament and musically sees the band exploring epic doom metal pastures to new heights. The band is now working on songs intended for their sixth full-length album. Forsaken have also built a strong reputation as a powerful and emotionally charged live doom act. Apart from countless local gigs and their mini-European tour in 1994, the band played in various reputable heavy metal festivals all over Europe, including, the first and fifth editions of the Doom Shall Rise festival (2003, 2007 Germany), the Headbangers Open Air festival VII ( 2004, Germany), Keep it True V (2005, Germany), Elements of Rock Festival (2007,Switzerland), Dutch Doom Days Festival (2007, Netherlands), Doom Metal Inquisition (July 2008, Bradford, England), Cross Music Metalfest (October 2008, Friedewald, Germany), Day of Doom (November 2008, Dortmund, Germany), Brainstorm Festival (November 2009, Netherlands), Hammer of Doom festival (October 2011, Wurzburg, Germany), Neuborn Open Air festival (August, 2012, Germany), Play it Doom Festival (Brescia, Italy, January, 2015 and followed up with another gig in Italy at the Nero Extrema Club at Reggio Calabria in April 2015), Dordrecht Doom Day (May, 2015, Netherlands), SpringDoom Depression Festival (April, 2016, Vienna, Austria), Rock Hard Ride Free festival, Poland (June, 2016) , exclusive club shows at La Saletta in Reggio Calabria in March, 2017 with Nuclear Detonation and in Athens at the Modu club together with Hellenic epic metal giants Reflection and Achelous (May, 2017). Other important shows in Malta include supporting Candlemass at the latter’s House of Doom show at the Aria Complex in June 2018. Forsaken also supported Ross the Boss at the same venue in 2022, which marked a return to the stage (together with the band’s Haunting the Theatre appearance in the same year) following the lift on Covid restrictions. In 2022, Forsaken returned to the studio to record a cover for the Warlord track “Lucifer’s Hammer” which featured in a Bill Tsamis tribute album titled “A Crack in the Sky” released on Pitch Black Records released on both cd and vinyl (DLP) in May, 2022. The band's current line-up reads: Leo Stivala (Vocals), Sean Vukovic (Guitars), Albert Bell (Bass) and Simeon Gatt (Drums). Forsaken clinched the MMA (Malta Music Awards) Best Heavy Rock/Heavy metal band award twice – in 2003 and 2009 and were also nominated for the same award in 1997. What the press says: « Forsaken have their very own way of playing their Doom materials that is simply fantastic. I'm impressed by the quality of this band from Malta, everything is nearly perfect from musician skill to song writing to ambience ». Franag Webzine, France. « If indeed doom metal is to live on, its bands such as Forsaken that will consist of its backbone » . Alternative Webzine, Israel. « If a band like Candlemass has competition, then the main competitor will be Forsaken » . Quintessence Webzine, The Netherlands. « I first came across Forsaken a couple of years ago on doom metal CD compilation called ‘A Dark World’, the track on there ‘Carpe Diem’ made me hunt down their debut album ‘Anima Mundi’ which was an awesome slab of epic doom metal so on receiving Dominaeon I was hopeful that they had continued in the same direction as ‘Anima Mundi’ left off and I can tell you in all certainty that they have excelled themselves with ‘Dominaeon’…. Without a doubt this is one of the best epic doom albums released in 2005 and hopefully I will get the chance to catch Forsaken live in 2006. Hail Forsaken, for you are the future of epic doom metal! » Live For Metal Webzine, UK. « Forsaken are on their way to become one of the most important Doom bands of all times, and possibly, they are already so. Wonderful! » Metal District Web Zine, Germany. « It’s unbelievable how much impact a band can have on you. Forsaken is a band that had that much impact on me. Pure Doom of the way only the masters can do itself. » Vampire Zine, The Netherlands. « With bands like Forsaken the genre (doom metal) will survive in eternal greatness...! » Blood of the Ancients Mag, Germany. « FORSAKEN give us a very complete package! For sure the best pure Doom Metal album of the year and dearly recommended to every friend of epic Doom sounds! » The Metal Observer, Germany. « It's my personal belief that Forsaken are with this album making a huge step forward and climbing up the “hierarchy” in the doom scene's scalar chain. Make sure you at least listen to their album, I'm sure that just one listening is enough to be convinced to bow to their supremacy!! » Forgotten Scroll Mag, Greece. « I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Forsaken to hardcore devotees of the genre (who probably have it already) or to metal fans who just appreciate well-written, masterfully produced and arranged material » Erebus Magazine, USA. • Drowning Sorrows

Drowning Sorrows JM Photography < Back Formed in the spring of 2019, Drowning Sorrows emerged from a familial bond steeped in a shared passion for good music. The band's inception took place when Gordon O’Reilly, alongside his brother-in-law, Raymond Galea, and nephew, Dylan Ray Galea, decided to transform their familial ties and mutual love for music into a cohesive musical project. Gordon, taking the helm as the guitarist and lead vocalist, is complemented by Dylan on the bass and backing vocals, with Raymond anchoring the rhythm on drums. Drowning Sorrows is a testament to the timeless appeal of rock 'n' roll, embodying the spirit of the genre as fervently as icons like Lemmy famously declared for Motorhead. Their musical influences span a broad spectrum, from the foundational rock 'n' roll of the '50s through the evolutionary sounds of the '60s garage rock, '70s punk, and glam, to the '80s thrash, post-punk, and psychobilly. The '90s alternative scene and the eclectic mix from the 2000s onwards also play a significant role in shaping their sound, creating a rich tapestry of influences that define their music. The band's name, Drowning Sorrows, speaks to the transformative power of music, offering an escape to listeners and inviting them to momentarily forget their troubles. This ethos is mirrored in the themes of their songs, which often revolve around perseverance and confronting personal issues over time, resonating with fans on a deeply personal level. Drowning Sorrows marked their public debut in 2021 at the Rock/Metal City event held in Valletta GWU, a momentous occasion that set the stage for their journey ahead. While the band has yet to formalize their discography with albums or EPs, they have taken a modern approach to sharing their music, releasing weekly content on their YouTube channel and major streaming platforms. This strategy not only keeps their fans engaged but also showcases their evolving production skills, with a mix of covers and original tracks. Despite not having received any formal awards or recognitions yet, Drowning Sorrows has already created memorable live experiences, notably their performance at Diamond City in Rabat, described as a mid-summer meltdown. Their participation in the Farsons Beerfest in 2023 marked their first festival appearance, setting the stage for future live events and tours. Looking ahead, Drowning Sorrows is focused on self-recording and producing their material, aiming to eventually self-produce an album to a high standard. With weekly releases on YouTube, they are not only working through their extensive back catalogue but also honing their production skills. The band aspires to tour abroad and expand their fan base, dedicating themselves to delivering authentic and impactful music to a global audience. For fans and followers of Drowning Sorrows, the future holds a promise of more original music, continuous engagement through their digital platforms, and the potential for live performances that capture the energy and essence of rock 'n' roll. As they navigate the challenges and triumphs of the music industry, Drowning Sorrows remains a beacon for perseverance, familial bonds, and the enduring power of music. In late 2024, drummer Raymond Galea departed, with Morsrot's Alex Fenech stepping in on drums for the live shows through the end of the year. • Different Strings

Different Strings < Back Different Strings is among the best prog rock bands from the Maltese Islands. Although not very much on the front line of the commercial music scene, Chris Mallia, the mind behind the band, was always involved into music. Chris has been learning the guitar, piano and music theory since the early nineties achieving various certificates of music from the London College of Music including the LLCM (TD) in guitar teaching from RGT. "I love all kind of music although the rock scene was always on top of everything and being more selective with prog-rock in particular", Chris said. Prog is very much alive again with hundreds of new bands emerging from all over the world and surviving a band of this genre of music takes some stamina and dedication. Chris continued "I was involved in various bands and recordings. I was a session musician for the metal band Achiral in ’98 and been part of the voices choir in 2000 with the recording “Voices - Jazz afloat”. That same year I created the solo project with the name of Different Strings which is the main focus today." Released first CD single “Dead man walking” in 2004 and debut album “…it’s only the beginning” in 2007 having the voice of Alan Mayo (ex-Limestone Kick). From 2008, Different Strings started the ambitious project of the next concept album titled “The sounds of silence” with the release of “Victims of love” EP in 2010. The idea was to be a double disc album but financially was very difficult. This project, “The sounds of silence” part I and II were released separately. In November 2011 the album was released having a DS live appearance. "The sounds of silence - part II" was released in March 2015. The band continued to play live for about 4 years with great success locally. Winners of the Hard Rock Rising competition in 2014 and followed by many others live events. In between the 2 albums there were some other releases including "legacy of war" single version and "Dead man walking 10th anniversary edition" with the participation from the live lineup musicians at that time. Throughout those years there were some lineup changes. The musicians that helped the band both in recordings and live events were Alan Mayo, Errol Cutajar and Paul Sky vocalists, Trevor Catania, Johann Tabone, Dean Montanaro bass, Kurt Aquilina guitars, Karl Dingli and Julian Mallia Drums and David Ciantar keyboards. Different Strings continues to have various internationally positive reviews of album releases which can be viewed in the reviews section. Among those important achievements, we had a review on the UK rock magazine Fireworks including the track ‘3 o’clock overture’ on their free CD in September 2012. In the same month we were short listed to be featured in a more popular prog magazine, Classic rock’s PROG as a freebie for their first ever Prog awards. The following month’s edition of Prog featured a review of the band. More magazines reviewed the band including the Spanish This is Rock magazine and the more prog dedicated French magazine Big Bang.Different Strings played live at various important venues around the Maltese islands including the Prog the Islands Prog Rock festival, Hard Rock Rising competition in 2013 and 2014 being voted best band on the Malta Hard Rock Facebook page and winners in 2014, Music from elsewhere, Puttinu Cares marathon, Simon's fest, Farsons Beer fest and Notte Bianca. For various reasons the band had a break in performing live at the moment but there is still work going on. In February 2017 the band released the reissue of the debut album "...it's only the beginning" totally remixed and remastered with some new added material. The album includes a new version of the instrumental track "Beyond infinity" and also 4 live bonus tracks. The fourth album, which is entitled "The sands of time" was planned to be released in 2020 but due to COVID19, a number of problems arose and had to be postponed and eventually released on 31st of March 2021. From this album two singles were already released, an alternate version of the title track "The sands of time" and "Ten dollar Love". The latter features the voice of the talented Annemarie Spiteri, vocalist of the Maltese prog band Viper soup complex. This album features none the less but the voice of Italian singer Andrea Casali from bands Astra and Icefish. For those unfamiliar with Icefish, this band consists of legendary drummer Virgil Donati, guitarist Marco Sfogli and keyboardist and producer Alex Argento. Andrea delivered stunning vocals to complement this prog rock masterpiece. “The sands of time” is considered to be the best work from Different Strings due to its compositional grandeur and an increase in sales and reviews. The whole album was scored and presented to the University of West London and it was awarded the FLCM in composition in November 2021. Since no live performances are scheduled for the near future, more music is being composed. In January 2024, Different Strings released a single entitled “Words unspoken”. This track is totally instrumental and features the ex-Dream Theater member and keyboard player, Derek Sherinian. Derek’s playing needs no introduction and his performance on this track is exceptional and raised the bar higher in terms of quality. More music is in the pipeline but there are no concise plans of when and how album number 5 will be released. They were later joined by bassist Aidan Falzon, then by guitarist Noel Zarb and eventually also vocalist Cezar Adrian Pinzaru. Delirium’s first album, “State of Delirium” focuses on mental illness and mental health issues in a society which deems many illnesses and issues untreatable or ‘an exaggeration’ of an issue. It takes the perspective of people with mental health problems and shows their side of the story. It also refers to the mental health issues caused by the pandemic of COVID-19 In February 2025, the band confirmed the departure of Cezar and Maria and revealed that Noel Zarb, the band’s long-time guitarist, will now be taking on vocal duties as well. • Destiny Band Oz

Destiny Band Oz < Back Destiny Band Oz is a multi-award winning duo comprising husband and wife singer-songwriters, Thomas and Tessa Libreri. Their versatile music and vocal styles range from soulful ballads to pumpy, country rock; ('Country, Rock and Soul! ) They have already released 3 albums and 2 EPs and are excited to have just released their new album of original songs with new producer, Damian Cafarella of EOR Studios called 'Who I Might Be'. As children, Thomas and Tessa grew up in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. Thomas in Reservoir and Tessa in Kilsyth. They were both musically inclined and tutored in music and singing. Thomas formed his first band at 12 playing bass guitar and had singing lessons from Normie Rowe. He played in many bands over the years. Tessa performed in musicals, went to the Johnny Young Talent School and was classically trained by Suzanne Steele then with Audrey Duggan. Thomas and Tessa met in a line-dancing country band based in Kinglake in 1996 which seemed like 'destiny' and they soon branched out on their own as a duo and later with various full band line-ups performing at clubs and functions. They married, had children and settled in Kinglake. They didn't perform much whilst their children were very young and then the horrific Black Saturday bushfires struck. Thomas and Tessa fought and saved their home and family and some of their neighbours but not all - and in the aftermath they decided to move their family away to Gippsland for a new start. (Thomas received a 'BM' - Bravery Medal from the Governor-General of Australia for his actions in saving a neighbour after the fire who sadly died a few weeks later in hospital) both Thomas and Tessa were heavily involved in the relief and rebuilding effort personally and through their building business at the time. After moving to Gippsland, they devoted themselves to the activities of their primary school aged daughters, joined community groups and clubs in the area and soon found themselves performing full-on again. They decided to record an album of their original songs written over the years because of their life-changing experience and knowing how fragile life is, so it was more for posterity than anything but they were encouraged by local radio hosts who'd heard them perform their songs to release a song to radio, which they did in 2017. • Dawn of Anguish

Dawn of Anguish unknown < Back Dawn of Anguish is a heavy doom metal band formed in 2008. The band employs down-tuned guitars to create the heavy atmosphere found in contemporary doom metal music while at the same time injecting sombre elements from diverse musical lineages. Amongst others, the musical direction of the band follows the likes of Doomshine, Place of Skulls Trouble and Wall of Sleep. The inception of the band dates back to early 2008 when Efrem and Simeon first started discussing the possibility of a side project. The two were brought together through common acquaintances in the local metal community and while other musical commitments severely damaged the initiation of their project, their common goal held both of them interested in the idea of forming a new band. Meanwhile, Alex and Efrem had been habitually rehearsing together with a number of different line-ups and as soon as they teamed up with Simeon in early 2008, the three were able to start working on the material that was to become the band’s first songs. Although having initially briefly experimented with a number of musical styles, the musical direction of the three-piece line-up quickly gravitated towards the ‘Doom Metal’ genre. The musical style of the band continued to strongly consolidate itself in short time by mid-2008 when the final elements of the band were successfully brought together. During this time, Andrew and Gregory were brought in to fulfil additional guitar and bass duties respectively. Having all the necessary tools in place for the pursuit of their musical vision, the five formed Dawn of Anguish. The band successfully entered its first year of being with a strong presence in the local live scene having played to relatively sizeable audiences and having participated in a number of important events within the local metal scene. The band has since been periodically involved in events such as ‘Malta Doom Metal’ festival, as well as the ‘Xtreme Metal Assault’ festival and ‘Doom Metal Assault’ events. Overall the band has played in three editions of the Malta Doom Metal festival (2009, 2010, 2013) as well as two editions of the Xtreme Metal Assault festival (2010, 2012) which together represent the largest events related to the ‘underground’ heavy metal genre of music in Malta. During such events as well as other shows in Malta and Gozo, the band has played alongside notable bands in the genre from a number of countries such as Reflection (Greece), Contradiction (Germany), Doomshine (Germany), Dark Quarterer (Italy), and The Prophecy (UK) to name a few. In September 2012 the band entered a collaboration with French company ‘Two-Notes audio-engineering’ whose hardware and software products represent a tool that us very well aligned to the band’s live needs and especially more so for the various stages of the creative and recording process. Efrem uses the ‘Torpedo Live’ which is permanently lodged in his lice rack while also using it during the recording process, whereas Andrew uses the ‘Torpedo Reload’ for recording. Both guitarists also use the ‘Wall of Sound III’ plug-in from Two-Notes. A short video showcasing some of the band’s songs and recordings using the ‘Torpedo Live’ can be found here In January 2013, Simeon also entered a collaboration with the then Exodus Cymbals company which he used on the recording of the band’s first release, Prologue in Black Band Members Alex Carachi Vocals Alex Carachi Gregory Calleja Bass Gregory Calleja Efrem Arpa Guitars Efrem Arpa Andrew Attard Guitars Andrew Attard Simeon Gatt Drums Simeon Gatt Discography Date Title Type Listen Buy the band's merch Follow the band Previous Band Next Band
