- ClubMurder Rocks the Stage: A Night of Brutal Metal and New Beginnings
On Saturday, March 15th, ClubMurder once again took the stage in what has become an annual tradition. This year’s event was particularly significant, as it not only celebrated St. Patrick’s Day but also marked the release of their latest EP, History of Gods . This EP serves as the closing chapter of a significant era for the band, as it is the last recording featuring former drummer Steve Muscat. In late October 2024, ClubMurder announced a major lineup change—Steve Muscat stepped down, making way for Victor Hugo Rivera from Halcyon. The band expressed their excitement over the transition: “We are thrilled to introduce Victor Hugo (Halcyon) as the powerhouse driving our new sound forward. After six intense weeks of rehearsals, Victor has reignited our passion, bringing new fire to our performances and pushing us to deliver our hardest-hitting live shows yet.” — ClubMurder Press Release Adding to the momentum, just days before the EP launch party at The Garage, ClubMurder announced another reinforcement—bassist Claudio Toscano (Haine, All Hands Lost, Abysmal Torment) joined the ranks, further strengthening their sonic arsenal. A Night of Pure Metal Mayhem The night kicked off with an electrifying performance by thrashers Grotium, setting the stage ablaze with their signature energy. The setlist featured “Bus From Hell,” a crowd favorite, where the band was joined on stage by Impertex vocalist Kieron Spiteri. Though he admitted on Facebook that he felt “lost without a guitar in hand,” his performance added a special touch to the night, seamlessly blending with Grotium’s intensity. Grotium photos by Sarah German Of the ten songs performed by Grotium, only two—“Bus From Hell” and “The Four Horsemen”—were from their debut EP Judgement Day , released in March seven years ago. The remaining eight were newer compositions, hinting at an upcoming release that fans can eagerly anticipate. ClubMurder Takes Over ClubMurder photo: Priscilla Spiteri As the night progressed, ClubMurder took the stage, ensuring the energy levels only went higher. Their set was divided into two sections, starting with a full live performance of History of Gods . This decision deviated from the usual practice of mixing new songs into a setlist, but the risk paid off, as the audience fully embraced the raw intensity of the new material. The crowd remained engaged, with no one stepping out for a smoke break—a testament to the band’s gripping stage presence. The second half of their performance revisited fan favorites from previous albums, including Derailed and Bound to the Underground from their 2017 self-titled album, as well as Viral, King of the Kill, and New Low from 2019’s Massacre Masterpiece . The band’s ability to deliver a flawless, high-octane performance cemented their reputation as one of the tightest metal acts on the island—if not the tightest. This feat is even more impressive considering their drummer has been with them for less than a year, and their bassist for just a few weeks. Looking Ahead ClubMurder photo: Priscilla Spiteri As guitarist David Depasquale stated in a recent interview , History of Gods is not just an EP—it’s a transition point. It signals both an end and a new beginning, with a promising future for the band and its fans. Known for their relentless energy and ability to command the stage, ClubMurder delivers an explosive live experience filled with intricate rhythms, heavy grooves, and an aggressive vocal attack. Their unique fusion of metal elements creates an intense auditory assault that leaves fans craving more. With their newly solidified lineup and fresh material, ClubMurder is poised to continue their reign of sonic destruction. Whether you are a longtime fan or new to their sound, one thing is certain—this band delivers a show that is not for the faint of heart. Get the EP and Exclusive Merch ClubMurder photo: Priscilla Spiteri While we always recommend getting a physical copy of the release, you can also listen to History of Gods online: Spotify YouTube Additionally, the band unveiled two new t-shirt designs and a unique memorabilia plaque during the launch event. These exclusive items can now be ordered by contacting the band directly. ClubMurder Lineup: David Depasquale – Guitars Victor Hugo Rivera – Drums Claudio Toscano – Bass Lorenz ‘Wenzu’ Joyce – Vocals Keith Falzon – Vocals, Electronics With a well-oiled machine in place, plenty of new material in the works, and an unrelenting passion for metal, ClubMurder is gearing up for even greater things. The only question is—are you ready for what’s next? ClubMurder photo: Priscilla Spiteri

CHILD Releases EP ‘Dyż-Lokazzjoni’ CHILD releases ‘Dyż-Lokazzjoni’ EP - a collection of electronic music tracks inspired by and about the real-life dystopian sci-fi. Check out ' Dyż-Lokazzjoni ' Photo Credit La La Studio About 'Dyż-Lokazzjoni’ CHILD’s newest EP, ‘Dyż-Lokazzjoni’, is a deeply personal sonic exploration of return, displacement, and transformation. Built primarily through analogue production—drum machines, synths, and live reverb and delay effects—it captures both the joy of homecoming and the stark reality of a land undergoing relentless change. Each track is its own universe: Touch Down radiates the innocent thrill of returning home, while Dystopian Sci-Fi channels a dystopian pulse, reflecting on greed, destruction, and political absurdity. Inspired by Malta’s rugged landscapes, Falling Rocks // Breathe evokes both the beauty and the heartbreak of watching natural spaces disappear, while Epilogue offers a hypnotic farewell, an improvised analogue session where synthesis and creative expression dissolve into one. ‘Dyż-Lokazzjoni’ is more than just a collection of tracks by CHILD—it’s a reflection of time, place, and the emotional weight of witnessing changes unfold. Get the EP here ! About CHILD Malta-born, London-based, CHILD transforms the human voice into a boundless instrument of emotion. Born from an innate musical calling and nurtured by preteen years singing in a church choir, CHILD’s journey began amidst the raw energy of her Church Punk roots. Drawing inspiration from electronica pioneers like Autechre and Luke Vibert, CHILD fuses the soul of analogue warmth with the precision of today’s digital landscape. With a strong desire to sing, CHILD set off and started her solo musical journey in Brighton where she fully immersed herself in the creative process. There she spent five years in introspection and experimentation, ultimately sculpting the distinctive sound that defies easy classification. With her first live performances lighting up Brighton’s stages in 2018, and now firmly rooted in London, CHILD invites listeners to explore a realm where the interplay of analogue nostalgia and digital innovation narrates an unspoken story her artistic evolution. Refusing to be confined by genre, CHILD’s sound is an ethereal dialogue. Her signature approach seamlessly blends emotive vocal expression woven with poignant lyrics with minimal hardware beats and vintage synthesis. This dynamic fusion creates a layered soundscape where raw, expressive energy meets her craftsmanship of electronica, embodying both the introspective qualities of dark ambient textures and the pulsating spirit of dance-inflected rhythms. CHILD’s next gig will be at ‘Taħt il-Pont’, Tigullio on the 29th March. Her current live sound is more synth pop and electronica tracks in a performance described as theatrical, powerful and emotional. Copyright (C) 2025 Kewn Records. All rights reserved

- The Realities of Digital Streaming: A Boon or a Burden for Artists?
Hey there, As 2025 unfolds, the landscape of music revenue continues to evolve, with digital streaming now accounting for a staggering 67% of worldwide music industry revenue. This dominance highlights how streaming has reshaped the way we consume music, offering listeners unparalleled access to a global catalogue at their fingertips. But what does this mean for the artists creating the music? The convenience of streaming is undeniable, allowing independent musicians to reach audiences that would have been unimaginable in the physical distribution era. However, the financial model behind it remains a double-edged sword. While streaming democratises exposure, it often fails to provide sustainable income for most artists, especially those outside the mainstream. With fractions of a cent earned per stream, many musicians must find alternative revenue sources—whether through live performances, merchandise, or direct fan support—to continue creating music. Moreover, algorithm-driven discovery has changed how music finds its way to listeners. While this can help emerging artists break through, it also means that visibility is often dictated by platform mechanics rather than organic audience engagement. This raises an important question: Is streaming fostering artistic diversity, or are algorithms reinforcing homogeneity? For those interested in a deeper dive into the latest trends and statistics, I recommend checking out the recent report by Dynamic Media, which explores the evolving dynamics of streaming in 2025. You can read more about it here. On a personal note, all four of my albums, including the latest Visions of Transcendence, are available for streaming on all major platforms. If you prefer a more immersive, tangible experience, all albums are available on CD, and Visions of Transcendence is also available on vinyl. Your continued support of independent music means the world to artists like myself. Thank you for being part of this musical journey. - Binary Suns (Part 1 - Operant Condition) by Different Light: A Retrospective
Progressive rock enthusiasts were treated to something truly special in January 2020 when Different Light released Binary Suns (Part 1 - Operant Condition) through Progressive Gears Records. The album was a bold and melodically rich statement from a band with a long and winding history, one that has seen them evolve from their roots in Malta to establishing a firm foothold in Prague. Now, five years later, with anticipation building for the upcoming Binary Suns (Part 2 - Alternate Reality) , it’s the perfect time to revisit the first part of this expansive work. A Band with a History and a Vision Formed in 1994 in Malta by Trevor Tabone, Different Light initially gained traction with their debut album All About Yourself (1996). The band saw early success, even supporting Fish (ex-Marillion) in 1998 before splitting up in 1999. However, in 2008, Tabone resurrected Different Light in Prague, gradually shaping its sound with new musicians. Over the years, their releases have been well-received, particularly Icons That Weep (2009) and The Burden of Paradise (2016). By the time they entered the studio for Binary Suns (Part 1 - Operant Condition) , the band had solidified its lineup: Trevor Tabone (vocals, keyboards), Petr Lux (guitars, backing vocals), Jirka Matoušek (bass), and David Filák (drums). A Progressive Rock Journey Clocking in at just under 57 minutes, Binary Suns (Part 1 - Operant Condition) offers an immersive sonic experience. The album consists of six tracks, with three multi-part suites that encapsulate Different Light’s signature blend of symphonic and neo-prog elements. From the sprawling 21-minute epic “Spectres and Permanent Apparitions” to the soaring melodies of “Two Faces,” the album presents a nostalgic yet fresh take on progressive rock. One of the highlights, “Amphibians,” is structured into four distinct movements— Water, Land, Sky, and The Message —that weave an intricate tapestry of sound, shifting between atmospheric passages and intricate instrumental interplay. Tracks like “Faith” and “The Answer” deliver shorter, yet equally compelling, compositions that showcase the band’s melodic sensibilities. Released on January 17, 2020, Binary Suns (Part 1 - Operant Condition) was made available in both CD and digital formats under Progressive Gears Records. The full tracklist includes: Amphibians (8:54) i. Water ii. Land iii. Sky iv. The Message Faith (4:12) Spectres and Permanent Apparitions (21:31) i. Ataraxia ii. Two Shadows iii. Small Mercies iv. Hand of Providence v. BarBrera vi. Synestesia vii. Midas Gold The Answer (3:47) Two Faces (7:42) On the Borderline (10:45) i. Talking to Strangers ii. Seduction iii. Obsession iv. Vindication v. Demonic vi. Now Just Go Away The lineup for the album featured Trevor Tabone on vocals and keyboards, Petr Lux on guitars and backing vocals, Jirka Matoušek on bass, and David Filák on drums. The album’s structure and arrangement highlight the band’s ability to craft compelling progressive compositions while maintaining accessibility and strong melodic foundations. Critical Reception photo: Facebook Binary Suns (Part 1 - Operant Condition) garnered praise from critics and fans alike. Reviewer Kev Rowland observed how the album’s sound harkens back to a blend of American melodic rock and commercial progressive rock, evoking a unique combination akin to “REO Speedwagon and Mystery forming a single unit.” He further highlighted Trevor Tabone’s vocals, comparing them to Kevin Cronin, and noted the strong presence of piano-driven melodies layered with lush guitars and intricate harmonies. “A very easy album indeed to get into on the very first listen, it only gets better with repeated plays,” Rowland concluded. Another review by Silly Puppy positioned the album within the realm of 90s symphonic and neo-prog, drawing comparisons to acts like The Flower Kings, Spock’s Beard, and Neal Morse. The review described Binary Suns as an album that embraces the “sunny side of prog” with uplifting melodies, rich harmonies, and a theatrical flair. While acknowledging the album’s proficiency in channeling the golden era of 90s prog, the reviewer noted that it might not break new ground, stating, “Perhaps the lapse in time didn’t close a certain chapter in the book, but one would think by 2020 that a band with a firm command of the neo-prog scene could muster up a little more creativity.” Nonetheless, for fans of symphonic prog’s grandiosity, the album remains a rewarding listen. Looking Ahead: Binary Suns (Part 2 - Alternate Reality) photo: Facebook With the announcement of Binary Suns (Part 2 - Alternate Reality) scheduled for release in 2025 under their new label, Shaded Moon Entertainment, fans eagerly await the continuation of this musical saga. The recently released single, A Fool’s Errand , has already generated excitement, promising another compelling chapter in Different Light’s journey. For those who may have missed Binary Suns (Part 1 - Operant Condition) upon its initial release, now is the perfect time to delve into its intricate compositions and rich textures. Whether you’re a longtime follower of Different Light or new to their music, this album stands as a testament to their ability to craft engaging and emotive progressive rock. With Part 2 on the horizon, the story of Binary Suns is far from over. Spotify link to Binary Suns (Part 1 - Operant Condition)

- The Death Tribute Concert of 2002
A Metal Homage to Chuck Schuldiner On the 1st of September 2002, a group of dedicated local musicians came together to pay tribute to one of metal’s most influential figures, Chuck Schuldiner. The event, aptly named The Death Tribute Concert , took place at Strings, Bahar Ic-Caghaq, and was a heartfelt homage to the late Schuldiner, who had passed away from cancer less than a year prior. Steve Lombardo Attard played drums for all the songs and later reflected on the experience, recalling, "At the time, the mammoth task of playing those songs seemed doable, kind of. One can imagine their complexity, and also the difficulty to organize rehearsals with so many musicians in a time without mobile phones." Despite the logistical challenges, the musicians managed to perform twelve songs from Death’s discography, covering at least one track from each of the band's albums. The event featured an impressive lineup of performers: Drums: Steve Lombardo Attard Guitars: Owen Grech, Adrian Camilleri, Robert Go-Away Agius, Malcolm Gulu Callus Bass and Vocals: Ronald Rex Grech, Charlie Ic-Chal Saliba Bass: Steven Muliett, Matthew Gedim Sammut Vocals: Ray Zammit, Joe "l-Ghawdxi" The setlist included some of Death’s most iconic tracks: Scavenger of Human Sorrow Spirit Crusher Story to Tell Misanthrope Perennial Quest Overactive Imagination The Philosopher Flattening of Emotions Spiritual Healing Pull the Plug Choke on It Zombie Ritual Beyond being a tribute to Schuldiner’s music, the concert also had a charitable aspect. Lombardo noted, "It was also done for charity, we made Lm135 (entrance was Lm1) and we donated it all to Hospice Malta." Promotion for the event was primarily by word of mouth, and the sound and lighting setup was a DIY effort. Despite these challenges, the concert was a success, with each musician giving their all in performing Schuldiner’s complex and technical compositions. Fortunately, a video recording of the event has survived, though its original recorder remains unknown. Lombardo has since uploaded the footage to YouTube, inviting those who attended to relive the experience and urging anyone with additional recordings or photos to share them. As Lombardo aptly quoted Chuck Schuldiner on the night: "Savor what you feel and what you see, things that may not seem important now, but may be tomorrow..." (Symbolic). About Chuck Schuldiner Charles Michael Schuldiner (May 13, 1967 – December 13, 2001) was an American musician and a pioneering figure in death metal. He co-founded the Florida-based band Death in 1983 and remained its only continuous member until his passing. Initially a guitarist, Schuldiner took on vocal duties in 1985 after the departure of Kam Lee. His impact on the metal scene was profound, with Kerrang! describing him as "one of the most significant figures in the history of metal." His contributions to the genre earned him a place among Guitar World ’s 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists and he was ranked No. 10 in Joel McIver’s book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists . Schuldiner’s legacy endures through his music and the devoted fanbase that continues to celebrate his work. The Death Tribute Concert stands as a testament to his influence, bringing together musicians and fans in a shared passion for the underground metal scene. The entire performance can be viewed here .

- Xtreme Metal Assault press release
Xtreme Metal Assault ‘New Blood’ 2025: A Return to Glory for Local Talent The Xtreme Metal Assault (XMA) is back! After a long hiatus, the much-anticipated XMA returns to Tigullio on October 18th, 2025, with a fresh, exciting concept: New Blood. This festival is set to celebrate the younger metal generation and showcase the best of local talent, reigniting the flames of the metal scene once again. For those wondering why XMA is making a comeback after organizer Edward Tagliaferro vowed not to return in 2020, here’s the story: XMA, which was founded in 2007, faced numerous challenges over the years, including cancellations in 2019 and 2020. The festival, which had flourished between 2007 and 2018, faced setbacks due to competition from larger events and, of course, the global pandemic. However, Edward Tagliaferro has been inspired by the growing and vibrant younger metal community, with numerous smaller events and gigs thriving, but a noticeable gap in larger events post-COVID. Now, in 2025, XMA is back to fill that void and celebrate the next generation of metal talent. “This festival is about recognizing and elevating the local talent, particularly the younger generation, who are the future of our scene,” said Edward Tagliaferro, XMA organizer. “I’ve been watching a steadily growing metal movement, and I believe it’s time to come together and build something special again. XMA ‘New Blood’ is all about pushing the scene forward and providing a platform for new and emerging talent.” XMA ‘New Blood’ will focus on supporting and showcasing local bands, ensuring that the emphasis remains on nurturing the scene and providing opportunities for up-and-coming talent to shine. Fans and musicians alike are encouraged to get involved, attend the event, and continue supporting the local metal movement. “I know the scene has had its ups and downs, but this is our chance to take it to the next level. Whether you're a band member or a fan, let’s make this event unforgettable and push our metal community forward together!” added Tagliaferro. The festival promises to deliver an unforgettable experience for fans, with plenty of opportunities to witness exciting live performances and support the future of metal. - Ominous Bloodline: Celebrating Twenty Years of Beheaded’s Brutal Milestone
March 4, 2025, marked the 20th anniversary of Ominous Bloodline, the seminal brutal death metal album by Beheaded. Released in 2005 through Unique Leader Records, the album remains a landmark in extreme metal, showcasing the band’s technical prowess and relentless intensity. To honour this milestone, we take a deep dive into the album’s impact, its creation, and its legacy in the metal scene. Ominous Bloodline was released on March 4, 2005, under catalog ID ULR60020-2, with Unique Leader Records handling the CD release. It later became available in digital format on April 28, 2016. Featuring nine relentless tracks, the album solidified Beheaded’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the death metal underground. The track list includes "Recounts of Disembodiment," "Spare No One," "Esoteric Kin," "Depths of Sore," "Ominous Bloodline," "Rooted in Profundity," "Ill Remains," "Fragments of a Forsaken Vision," and "Vaults of Ageless Pain." At the time of recording, Beheaded’s lineup consisted of Melchior Borg on vocals, Omar Grech and Chris Mintoff on guitars, David Cachia on bass, and Chris Brincat on drums. The album’s intense sound was captured at Temple Studios between July and August 2004. Engineered and produced by David Vella, Ominous Bloodline was mastered at Imperial Mastering in Pacheco, California, by Colin Davis. The cover art, created by Toshihiro Egawa, perfectly encapsulates the album’s dark, otherworldly atmosphere. photo: Darren Grech Purkiss Reviewer autothrall (January 17, 2013) praised the album’s “superior riffing” and “dark production standard,” emphasizing its relentless brutality. He described listening to Ominous Bloodline as akin to “being in a space vessel as it was being swallowed by a black hole.” While he acknowledged its lack of innovation, he highlighted the album’s meticulous balance of aggression and technicality. Svartekrist (August 5, 2011) commended the album’s songwriting and precise musicianship. He noted that while Ominous Bloodline does not introduce new elements to the genre, its composition and atmosphere elevate it beyond standard brutal death metal. Perplexed_Sjel (August 27, 2008) described Beheaded as “Malta’s leading death metal act” and compared Ominous Bloodline favourably to its predecessor, Recounts of Disembodiment. He lauded its refined sound, describing it as a “rollercoaster ride of brutality.” Optimuszgrime (March 22, 2008) called the album a “masterpiece of modern technical death metal,” highlighting its intricate riffing and conceptual depth. He found its themes refreshingly cohesive compared to many brutal death metal releases. Formed in 1991, Beheaded became a pioneering force in the Maltese extreme metal scene. The band initially signed with Mighty Music but later moved to Unique Leader Records in 2004 after a well-received two-track promo. Despite rumours of their disbandment in 2007, Beheaded is still active and continues to unleash their signature brutality. They have a new album set to be released this year through Agonia Records, along with several festival appearances. The current lineup in 2025 consists of David Cachia on bass and vocals, Frank Calleja on vocals, Davide Billia on drums, Simone Brigo on guitars, and Fabio Marasco on guitars. Ominous Bloodline remains a cornerstone of Beheaded’s discography, influencing countless brutal death metal acts. Its seamless blend of relentless aggression and calculated precision continues to captivate listeners two decades later. As the 20th anniversary approaches, Ominous Bloodline stands as a testament to Beheaded’s mastery of their craft, cementing their place in the brutal death metal pantheon. On January 31st, Omar Grech shared a photo of himself with Melkior Borg, recreating a pose from a picture taken two decades ago. He teased in the caption, “Back at it! 20 years since the Ominous Bloodline album recording. Stay tuned.”

- ALL HANDS LOST press release
Instrumental progressive metal outfit All Hands Lost is proud to announce the release of their latest single, "Tethered," set to air on Friday, March 7, 2025 . This new track follows closely on the heels of their previous release, "Reverie," marking a new chapter in the band's evolution from a solo project to a full-fledged two-piece band. ABOUT ALL HANDS LOST Founded in 2020 , All Hands Lost is an instrumental progressive metal project with elements of progressive rock , inspired by artists such as Plini, Intervals, Animals as Leaders, Periphery, The Contortionist, and Jakub Zytecki . Originally launched as a solo project by Jean Vella , the project recently evolved into a collaborative effort with Claudio Toscano on bass, who initially featured on the track Starve Your Burdens , from the EP released in 2022, and has now officially joined as a full-time member. The origins of All Hands Lost stem from a need for a creative outlet beyond the more extreme metal styles of their other bands, including Haine, Bound to Prevail, Abysmal Torment, and Niket among others. The project embraces melodic soundscapes, intricate guitar work and introspection , creating a balance between heavy-hitting technicality with more emotive elements. "REVERIE" – A JOURNEY INTO INTROSPECTION Released earlier this year, "Reverie" displayed a different side of All Hands Lost, embracing a more melodic and melancholic atmosphere compared to previous material. The song represents a dream-like state of reflection , with soaring guitar leads and rhythmic bass patterns that evoke a sense of nostalgia and bittersweet longing . As Jean and Claudio describe it, "Reverie" is a song meant to be experienced as if listening on a rainy day, lost in thought about moments that once burned brightly but now exist as distant echoes . The track offers a more introspective journey, moving away from the more aggressive side, which both are more accustomed to and towards emotive progressions that highlight the duo's natural chemistry as musicians . "TETHERED" – THE NEXT CHAPTER With the release of "Tethered" on March 7, 2025 , All Hands Lost continues to explore musical formats with a track that expands upon the ethereal qualities introduced in "Reverie." The song explores the feeling of fleeting moments and the internal struggle of holding on , capturing an emotional duality that aims to resonates with listeners on a deeper level. "Tethered" reflects on persistence and longing, balancing moments of resignation yet with an unyielding desire to push forward . Through intricate guitar melodies, dynamic bass work, and immersive soundscapes, the track reflects a powerful emotional contrast— a sense of defeat, yet an unwillingness to let go . This new single solidifies the band's refined approach to song writing, focusing on both technical proficiency and emotive storytelling. In keeping with the band's collaborative spirit and connection to the Maltese metal scene , "Tethered" also features a guest solo by Keith Fenech of Bound to Prevail , further enriching the melodic qualities and voicing of the guitars in this track . Keith's contribution adds another dimension to the song’s elaborate composition, reinforcing the sense of depth and expression that also defines All Hands Lost. A NEW ERA OF ALL HANDS LOST With Claudio now a permanent member, All Hands Lost is embracing a new era of creativity and collaboration . Jean remains the principal composer, crafting intricate structures, melodies, and guitar work , while Claudio brings in his rhythmic sensibilities, fresh ideas, and dynamic bass-lines , acting as further inspiration to the band's evolving sound. The band is committed to self-recording and producing their music, allowing for an organic and experimental approach to their sound. This hands-on process not only serves as a learning curve but also ensures that every aspect of their music remains genuine and unfiltered . Looking ahead, All Hands Lost has a series of singles planned for release throughout 2025 and is already working on new material for future projects. With a renewed sense of purpose and a strong collaborative vision, the band is poised for an exciting journey ahead. CLAUDIO SAYS: "It’s always a pleasure working with Jean, and everything feels completely natural—primarily as close friends but also as musicians who understand each other. Joining All Hands Lost as a full-time member is an opportunity for me to explore new creative directions that differs from my past work. The music we create together is something special, and I’m really looking forward to contributing, writing, and releasing more music under All Hands Lost." - Joe Camilleri: A Legacy in Australian Music
Joe Camilleri, born the third of ten children in Malta in 1948, moved with his family to Australia when he was just two years old. They settled in the vibrant, multicultural suburb of Port Melbourne, where Camilleri grew up listening to rock music on the radio. His mother affectionately called him "Zep," a nickname that evolved into "Jo Zep," which he later adopted professionally. Influenced by early rock 'n' roll, R&B, and jazz, Camilleri taught himself to play the saxophone and began performing in local bands as a teenager. His music career began in 1964 when he was literally thrown onstage to sing with The Drollies, marking the start of his lifelong journey in the music industry. His journey gained momentum with The Pelaco Brothers, where he first showcased his talents as a saxophonist and vocalist, laying the groundwork for a prolific career. Camilleri is also a proud father of five children, balancing his family life with his enduring passion for music. In late 1975, Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons were formed in Melbourne as Jo Jo Zep and His Little Helpers. The band emerged from a one-off Christmas single project produced by Ross Wilson. Camilleri, nicknamed "Jo Jo Zep" from a traditional Maltese nickname for "Joseph," fronted the group. The original lineup included John Power, Jeff Burstin, John McInerney, and Wayne Burt, later joined by Gary Young and Wilbur Wilde, creating the classic lineup. Their early work under Oz Records, including singles like "Beating Around the Bush" and "Security," showcased their funky, energetic R&B style infused with reggae rhythms. Albums like Don't Waste It and Whip It Out cemented their place in the Australian music landscape. The band's dynamic live performances became legendary, blending infectious grooves with Camilleri's charismatic stage presence. Signing with Mushroom Records in 1979 marked a turning point. Hits like "Hit and Run," "Shape I'm In," and "All I Wanna Do" propelled them to national fame. Their album Screaming Targets and international tours, including performances at the Montreux Jazz & Blues Festival and supporting acts like Journey, expanded their reach. Despite lineup changes and evolving musical styles, including Latin influences on albums like Cha, the band's spirit endured. The band's music resonated with audiences for its genre-blending approach, seamlessly fusing rock, reggae, and soul. Camilleri's ability to adapt to changing musical landscapes kept Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons relevant throughout their active years. photo: Scott Gelston Camilleri's solo ventures were infrequent but notable. His first solo project was a 1980 single credited to "Joey Vincent," followed by two additional singles in the 1980s and the 1995 maxi single "All Saint's Hotel." These releases highlighted his versatility and ability to experiment beyond his band projects. His solo work often delved into more personal and introspective themes, showcasing his depth as a songwriter. After Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons disbanded in 1981, Camilleri formed The Black Sorrows in 1983, incorporating former Falcons members. The band blended blues, soul, and R&B, achieving hits like "Chained to the Wheel," "Harley + Rose," and "Hold On to Me." Their albums Hold On to Me and Dear Children received critical acclaim and commercial success, further cementing Camilleri's status as a leading figure in Australian music. Camilleri's songwriting prowess and charismatic performances kept The Black Sorrows in the spotlight for decades. His ability to reinvent himself while staying true to his musical roots has been a hallmark of his career. The band's extensive touring schedule, both in Australia and internationally, helped build a loyal fan base that spans generations. Beyond Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons and The Black Sorrows, Camilleri explored various musical projects that showcased his versatility. He formed The Revelators in the 1990s, a side project focused on rootsy, blues-driven sounds with a raw, stripped-back style. The Revelators allowed Camilleri to delve deeper into traditional blues and R&B, reflecting his broad musical influences. Camilleri also fronted Bakelite Radio, a project emphasising acoustic, folk, and jazz elements. This endeavour highlighted his ability to blend different genres and experiment with more laid-back, intimate musical arrangements. Bakelite Radio's albums received praise for their authenticity and musicianship. Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows shot for Golden Plains - Suzanne Phoenix Additionally, Camilleri has been a prolific collaborator, contributing to various artists' recordings and mentoring emerging musicians. His passion for music extends beyond performance, influencing the next generation of Australian artists through his guidance and support. Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons reunited multiple times, notably in 2001, 2003, 2008, 2011, and for a 2013 Australian tour. Their induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007 honored their impact on Australian music. Camilleri's influence extends beyond his bands, inspiring generations of musicians with his dynamic style and relentless creativity. In addition to his work with The Black Sorrows, Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons, The Revelators, and Bakelite Radio, Camilleri's contributions to the Australian music scene are vast. His longevity in the industry is a testament to his passion for music and his ability to connect with audiences across different eras and genres.
