Some weeks ago, melodija.eu featured a couple of articles highlighting the illustrious career of Toni Sant and his numerous accomplishments over the years. One of his most significant and enduring achievements is the television program Mill-Garaxx. The following article is derived from a piece written by Toni Sant himself in 2020, reflecting on this groundbreaking program. During the 1980s, live music was a rarity on the sole Maltese television station, Television Malta. While orchestral performances or solo acts accompanied by a piano were common, rock bands performing live were almost nonexistent. Instead, bands would mime their performances to pre-recorded tracks on popular shows like TeleDisco, Sibtijiet Flimkien, Bonġu Malta, and Arzella. When Toni Sant began working at Xandir Malta and producing programs regularly for Radju Malta, he frequently discussed with his friend Mario Ellul the possibility of introducing live rock music to Television Malta studios. Sant and Ellul had known each other since their days at the New Lyceum, where they both studied Maltese, English, and Philosophy. Mario Ellul had joined TeleMalta before Sant with an aim to work with Television Malta where he eventually became a director and producer of various programs. Ellul was also the lead singer of Fog, a popular band among university students. Sant, too, was active in the music scene, performing with bands like Structure and Artwork in the 1980s. He later joined what remained of Fog in the early 1990s, primarily for theatrical productions by the MADC. Together with colleagues Ray Bajada and Alfie Fabri, Sant and Ellul began designing a television series named Mill-Garaxx. However, shortly after commencing work on the series, Bajada and Fabri were suspended from all Xandir Malta programs due to a controversial radio program they produced that discussed personal cannabis use with language deemed inappropriate for broadcasting at the time. Despite this setback, Sant and Ellul, as regular employees of Xandir Malta, continued developing the Mill-Garaxx program with a different team. They privately supported Bajada and Fabri, despite the taboo nature of the subject at the time. The leaders of Maltese society were far more hypocritical back then, and censorship was much stronger, even though there was a push towards modernity and progressiveness in certain aspects. The primary goal of Mill-Garaxx was to feature musicians playing rock live in the Television Malta studio in Gwardamangia. However, the program also incorporated regular discussions about societal issues in Malta. These discussions, necessary in a politically charged environment, were conducted with great seriousness and balance by Joseph Debono, who later gained fame as a comic and satirical character on Xarabank. Thanks to Debono's handling, the program avoided trouble despite its controversial topics. Mill-Garaxx lasted only about three months. A year later, Sant and his team produced another series, Mill-Garaxx 2, which revisited the musicians from the first series to see their progress. Bands featured in the Mill-Garaxx series included Acid, Big Foot, Ivory Cross, Freeway, The Ophidian Twin, Men and White, Flying Alligators, Catch 22, Fallout, and Winter Moods with Mark Doneo as the singer. Aidan Zammit Lupi also performed live solo, and Sant himself sang live with a group of musicians including Antoine Bonnici Soler (piano), Philip Fenech (guitar), Joe Carr (percussion and vocals), Walter Vella (saxophone), Gino Mifsud (electric bass), and Louis Naudi (drums). Tragically, Mifsud, Naudi, and Ellul passed away at a young age, and Sant fondly remembers them regularly. Reflecting on the program, Sant acknowledges that much of the material was relatively ordinary in quality. Nostalgia often enhances the perception of their work, making it seem better than it might have been at the time. However, what Sant cherishes most from the Mill-Garaxx series is not the live music but the opening theme music by Charles Dalli and the digital graphics created with Chris Agius and Mike Rizzo. In one of the earliest attempts at Maltese rap, Charlie Dalli penned a verse that Sant considers one of the most beautiful in Maltese popular music: "How beautiful is that dream of one day touching the stars, but all value disappears if everything I touch turns to gold."

His significant early stint was with the progressive rock band Colourblind. With Colourblind, Montanaro experienced a formative period that included numerous live performances. Notably, on his 18th birthday with Colourblind, he played at The Farsons Beer Festival and, catching a flight just hours later with the band to perform at the Aya Napa Youth Festival in Cyprus. Followed later on (in 2014) with another performance in Sweden with Angela Vella Zarb (Swing Nuages and Blue Tangerine), who was sharing vocal duties with Paul Sky at the time. This period of intense activity and exposure to live audiences set the foundation for Montanaro’s professional career and deepened his love for performance and collaboration. Montanaro’s formal education in music is a testament to his dedication and pursuit of excellence. He embarked on his higher education journey at Codarts Rotterdam in 2017, where he pursued a Bachelor of Music in jazz electric bass. His time at Codarts was marked by academic excellence, culminating in a cum laude graduation in 2021. During his undergraduate studies, he also spent an Erasmus exchange semester at ESMUC Barcelona, a period that enriched his musical outlook and exposed him to diverse influences. In 2021, Montanaro continued his academic pursuits at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he undertook a Master of Music in jazz electric bass. His master's degree, completed in 2023 with an outstanding final score of 9.5/10, further solidified his expertise and artistry. Throughout his academic journey, Montanaro had the privilege of studying under some of the most renowned bass teachers, including Gary Willis, Glen Gaddum, Mario Rossy, Jeroen Vierdag, Theo de Jong, Alessandro Fongaro, and Ruud Ouwehand. The 25-year-old artist took to his Facebook page to announce the completion of his first film score for the movie I Wish I Never Existed, created by Difyrent and starring Zoe Colletti and Patrick Lyster. "Ticked filmscoring off my bucket list thanks to I Wish I Never Existed," Aleandro posted. "I’ve worked on this score almost every day for the past nine months, making sure every sound and every note in there is serving the right intention. Filmscoring really is a different beast." Aleandro, born on June 9, 1999, has made a name for himself in the local music scene as a versatile keyboardist for the award-winning band Red Electric. His involvement in various projects as a session musician, songwriter, and recording artist has further established his reputation as a multifaceted musician. Reflecting on his collaboration for the film score, Aleandro expressed gratitude to his colleagues Dylan Odom and Maria Grech, highlighting the synergy that transformed their collective efforts into something extraordinary. Atlam, was formed in 1978 by Charles Saliba and his twin brothers, Lizio and Stephen Saliba, in their hometown of Ħaż-Żabbar. Initially, the band performed at local events, gradually expanding their repertoire and influence. With the addition of their cousin, Charles Galea, the band's lineup solidified: Charles on guitars and vocals, Lizio on bass and backing vocals, Stephen on drums, and Charlie on keyboards and backing vocals. Atlam's music was deeply influenced by the rock and roll and pop sounds of the 1960s. Their performances featured covers of iconic bands such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The Shadows. This homage to the sixties helped them build a local fan-base, playing almost every weekend at weddings, bars, and community events. The band began to compose their own material, with most songs written by Charles and Lizio, and contributions from the other members. Their first record, F’Imħabba w fis-Sliem, was recorded at LJR Studio in Żabbar. Inspired by their friend Tony Mugliette, they transformed their practice space into a recording studio. During this time, they recorded several tracks, including Atlam (an instrumental), Kemm Nixtieq, Ninsab il-bogħod, Lilek Irrid, Ġrajja ta’ Sajjied, and Tfajla ta’ qalbi. These songs, reflecting their sixties rock and ballad influences, were released on a cassette titled Imħabba w Sliem around 1982. As their musical style evolved, Atlam began experimenting with harder rock sounds influenced by bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin. This shift was marked by the addition of Tony Mugliette as a vocalist, transforming Atlam into a rock band. Their new style debuted at a three-day rock festival at il-Marsa grounds, followed by a performance at the Ta’ Qali Music Festival. Songs like The End of the World, Ghost Rider, and Desperate Life became staples in their set-list. The departure of Tony Mugliette led to the recruitment of Silvio Bonnici, whose high-pitched vocals inspired new compositions. Atlam's cover versions of Led Zeppelin and their medley Stars of Sabbath, featuring Black Sabbath hits, became crowd favorites. The band's lineup at this time included Silvio Bonnici on vocals, Charles Galea on keyboards, Lizio Saliba on bass and backing vocals, Stephen Saliba on drums, and Charles Saliba on guitars and backing vocals. Their most memorable concert occurred on July 9, 1983, during a Rokarja AST gig at the Tigne Chapel, where Stars on Sabbath had to be performed three times due to popular demand. To differentiate between their commercial pop side and their rock persona, the band adopted a dual identity. They continued to perform as Atlam for weddings and other events while their rock performances were under the name V-Gile, with Ralph Camilleri as their manager. V-Gile's first notable performance was a Rock Mass at The Stones Discotheque, featuring music composed by Charles Saliba and lyrics by Josette Micallef. This mass was also performed at the Birkirkara Parish Church. Parallel to their performances, V-Gile worked on a rock opera titled Victims, written by Lawrence Micallef. The opera, which aimed to raise awareness about drug abuse, was partially performed at various cultural events but never fully staged due to production challenges. Despite attempts to collaborate with Caritas, disagreements over the opera's title halted its full realisation. The band's lineup saw changes over the years, with Anton Scicluna replacing Lizio on bass and Edward Mifsud joining on guitars and vocals. Charles Galea left the band due to work commitments. Atlam continued to perform at venues like Jerma Palace and Corinthia, with a consistent presence at an open-air restaurant in Rabat. From 1995 onwards, performances by Atlam and V-Gile became occasional, with Charles and Stephen remaining the core members. Charles kept the band's legacy alive, performing in Libya and notably headlining a concert for the Commonwealth countries in 2009 alongside German and British bands. Atlam participated in tribute concerts, including “Ir-Rock It-Tajjeb” in 2016 and a performance at SixteenSeven Sports Bar & Grill in 2019. Atmospheric indie band Eyes to Argus have just released their third full-length album, Reroot (official release date: 19th July) and it’s available to stream on all streaming services. Once more, Eyes to Argus worked with record label Post. Recordings (Indianapolis, US) and the album was pressed on vinyl as a limited run, which is available through Bandcamp. On Reroot, Eyes to Argus have a different energy compared to their 2021 album, in habit. The songs are more charged, more concise, and catchier than ever before. Yet, this is still an Eyes to Argus album through and through, and the band’s signature take on indie, shoegaze, and post-rock is on full display. Reroot is about the trajectory of entering a new decade and getting used to the way it feels. Reeferfest 2024: A Blaze of Stoner Metal With Three International Bands Last year, REEFERFEST presented four bands, featuring the incredible OMEGA SUN from Slovenia, making the third edition an unforgettable experience. This year, the festival is raising the bar by including three foreign bands in the four-band lineup. The local band on the night is Hemplifier, formed in 2021 by Bazaz (Lady Lizard) on bass, Dino Mifsud Lepre (Pilgrimage, Victims of Creation) on drums and samples, and Emanuel Portelli (Akem Manah, Animamortua, Thy Legion, Victims of Creation) on guitars and vocals. Hemplifier released their debut album, The Stone Side Of The Doom, on June 2nd, 2023, through Electric Valley Records. Joining them from Belgium is Witch Piss, formed in Mechelen, Antwerp, in 2022. The band features Glenn Van Bael on bass, Dennis Lefebvre on drums, Andoni Lombide Carreton and Stijn Georges Moens on guitars, and Peter Egberghs on vocals. Their self-titled debut album was released on April 7th, 2023, on Saturni Records. Representing the Netherlands, Ditch hails from The Hague. The band consists of Douwe de Wilde on vocals and bass, Eric Hazebroek on guitars, and Alexander de Goede on drums. Their notable releases include Boca do Inferno (2014) and Coldfoot, Alaska (2021). Belzebong, from Kielce, Świętokrzyskie, Poland, has been a prominent name in the stoner doom scene since their formation in 2008. The current lineup includes Rafał Łagowski on bass, Alky Dude and Piotr Sadza on guitars, and Stanisław Malanowicz on drums. Longevity of radio programmes, dedicated to rock and/or metal in Malta, is not the rarest of occurrences, as some programmes have graced the air for quite a few years. Such as the now defunct Grinta, on air for 18 years, Rock Express on air for more than 22 years, both brainchildren of Brian Micallef and Rockna, hosted by Michael Bugeja, on air for the 14 years this year (2024), just to mention a few. Rock Moods, hosted by Noel Mifsud, will be reaching the 15-year milestone of airing on ONE Radio. The programme was the brainchild of Joe Tanti and aired for a few years on Bay Radio prior to the DJ moving to ONE Radio in 2009. Marc, the son of Joe Tanti, co-hosted the show. Noel Mifsud was asked to be part of the programme as soon as it started airing on One Radio. Both father and son then moved on, Joe to host other shows, while his Marc went on to continue with his studies. Since then Noel Mifsud hosts one of the island’s iconic rock shows with Joe’s blessing. For a brief period, Noel was joined by Lito (R.I.P.) till the summer of 2011. Since 2011 Rock Moods was rebranded to cover solely Maltese talent. At a point in time local talent was aired live on the programme. Since then, Rock Moods has been regular every week on ONE Radio. The show is also available on melodija.eu. Rock Moods is one of the few avenues for local rock and metal bands and artists to air their music, make their voices heard and their events promoted. Alongside friends Frank Camilleri and Joe Curmi, he formed one of Malta's first jazz trios, guided by stranded African-American jazz musicians who helped him develop his drumming skills and passion for Bebop. Seeking greater opportunities, Tony eventually moved to London to further his musical career. In London, he faced intense competition and took on various jobs to support himself. His perseverance led to a breakthrough when he joined a European tour with the internationally acclaimed Billy Eckstine, which established him as a sought-after session drummer in London's contemporary music scene. By the 1960s, he had become the preferred session drummer for renowned pianist and conductor John Cameron, adapting to the evolving music landscape and collaborating with legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Sixto Rodriguez, Donovan, Alan Price, and Paul McCartney. Ray Caruana's life is a compelling story of musical talent, personal battles, and unwavering determination. Born in Malta, Ray moved to the UK at the age of five. As the son of a professional singer, his musical journey began early. By the age of 12, he had already made history as the youngest performer to appear at the London Palladium for "Night of a 1,000 Stars." This early exposure to music set the stage for a career that would see him perform with orchestras and even lead him to the Eurovision stage. Early Life and Musical Beginnings Ray's father, an opera singer, recognised his son's potential and began training him from a young age. "He said that you can sing, and he started training me at the age of five and that went through till I was 16 years old and always with big orchestras, that's why I got a liking for live musicians," Ray recounted in an interview with ESCBubble's Matt in August 2021. This early start fostered a deep appreciation for live music, which would become a hallmark of Ray's performances. Eurovision and Live Report In the late 1980s, Ray became the lead vocalist for Live Report, a band initially called Midnight Blue. The group included talented musicians such as John Beeby, Brian Hodgson, Maggie Jay, Mike Bell, and Peter May. Hodgson, a former member of the UK pop group Matchbox, brought significant experience to the band, having written many hits. Live Report's big break came in 1989 when they competed in the BBC Television's "A Song for Europe" contest with the song "Why Do I Always Get it Wrong?". Family and Advocacy Ray's personal life took a positive turn when he met Pauline, who would become his wife. Together, they have a son, Cesare, who was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, a condition related to mild autism. Originally formed in 1979, The Rifffs managed to capture the imagination of the Maltese youth culture of that time by actively performing around the Island as well as securing a record deal with a UK independent record company, 'Alternative Music’. This culminated in the release of one of the most influential Maltese records of the early 80s, ‘Dance Music for the 80’s Depression’ which is still a local favourite till this day. Fast forward 45 years , the band are still treating their fans to exiting news. Following their return to the music scene with two full length music albums ‘Moonstomp’ and ‘Can’t Stop the People’ as well as a string of singles including a featured track with the legendary Neville Staple from The Specials, the Rifffs are back with a new single called ‘Modern Society’. Strummin’ Foundation presents concert proceeds to Foodbank Lifeline Foundation In an event held at the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector in Valletta, Strummin’ Foundation presented the proceeds from last year’s annual charity concert, Turn Back Time, to Foodbank Lifeline Foundation. Strummin’ founder Gwyneth Zammit presented a cheque of €4000 to Lisa Villette from Foodbank on behalf of the foundation, the cast and the committee. Ms Villette expressed her gratitude, urging people to recognise the importance of initiatives like the Strummin’ concert that help in more ways than one. Ms Zammit then went on to announce the beneficiary for the 20th edition of the concert, Dr Klown. Eric Muscat, President of Dr Klown, gave an introduction to the valuable work carried out by clown doctors at Mater Dei Hospital, and how he hopes the monies collected from this year’s concert will contribute to a new preparation room for the clown doctors at the hospital. The event took place on Friday, July 5th, and Saturday, July 6th, at The Garage, captivating audiences with an impressive array of performances. The competition kicked off on Friday evening with six bands each delivering a fifteen-minute set, vying for a spot in the finals. The evening's performances were judged based on both the judges’ scores and attendees’ votes. By the end of the night, three bands advanced to Saturday’s showdown: No Humano, From Sheep To Wolves, and Captain Romance And The Danger Dogs. Enzo Gusman, also known as Laurence Gusman, was a celebrated Maltese singer-songwriter and broadcaster, born on 9 August 1947 in Sliema, Malta. His career, spanning several decades, saw him achieve both national and international acclaim, particularly during the 1970s when he represented Malta in various song contests and festivals around the world. He passed away on 18 December 2021 at the age of 74. Gusman's talent was first discovered by the late comic actor Johnnie Navarro, who invited him to perform as a resident singer on the programme "TIC TAC" transmitted on the now-defunct Malta's Cable Radio system run by Rediffusion. He started his career at the young age of 13, singing as the lead vocalist with the all-Maltese band "The Boys" in the early 1960s. By 1968, he represented Malta in the Olympiade De La Chanson in Athens, Greece, where his romantic ballad performance was met with immediate success. Throughout his career, Gusman participated in numerous prestigious international song festivals, including the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, Japan; Festival Internacional De la Canción in Viña del Mar, Chile; Olympiad De La Chanson in Athens, Greece; Alexandria International Song Festival in Alexandria, Egypt; Castlebar International Song Festival in Castlebar, Ireland; Cavan International Song Festival in Cavan, Ireland; Istanbul International Song Festival in Istanbul, Turkey; Festival Menschen und Meer in Rostock, East Germany; and Festival Golden Orpheus in Slantchev Bryag, Bulgaria. His major achievement was winning the coveted ‘First Prize’ at the Golden Orpheus Festival in Bulgaria. He was also voted Best Foreign Artist at the Cavan International Song Festival in Ireland and declared Best Interpreter at the Istanbul International Song Festival in Turkey. Gusman wrote and composed many of his own songs, which remain popular in Malta and among the Maltese diaspora. He won the Malta Song Festival multiple times, with notable victories in 1974 with "Paċi fid-Dinja" (Peace on Earth) and in 1976 with "Sing Your Song Country Boy." Despite these successes, Malta withdrew from the Eurovision Song Contest on both occasions before he could perform internationally. He competed unsuccessfully in the Malta Song for Europe a further seven times but found success in over 20 international song festivals. In addition to his singing career, Gusman was a well-known radio and television personality. He began broadcasting with Rediffusion in 1969, presenting The Italian Hit Parade weekly, and later hosted the popular radio show "Bejn il-Ħbieb" (Between Friends). He emigrated to Canada in December 1979, continuing his banking career while also being a regular broadcaster on CHIN Radio Toronto. Returning to Malta in 1991, he resumed his work as a singer and broadcaster, performing in various entertainment venues and continuing his beloved radio show on different stations, including Xandir Malta, Bay Radio, PBS, Radio 101, Calypso Radio, and Radju Malta. Enzo Gusman was also an avid campaigner for blood donation, writing the song "Agħtini Pinta Oħra" (Give Another Pint) to promote the cause. He was passionate about the Maltese language and heritage, urging fellow broadcasters to uphold high standards of spoken Maltese on air. Additionally, he performed in local dramas and musicals, further cementing his status as a versatile entertainer. Enzo Gusman was awarded the Midalja Għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika in 2008 for his contributions to entertainment and broadcasting. In September 2021, he was honored with Gieħ l-Għanja during the year's edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu. Gusman was married to another popular Maltese singer, Carmen Schembri, and they had two daughters, Johanna and Greta. He was a grandfather of four and managed to spend time with his family in Canada every January and during the summer months. Many tributes poured in after his passing, with friends and colleagues remembering him as a great artist and a person who truly loved his motherland. His legacy lives on through his music and the indelible mark he left on the Maltese cultural landscape.

Historic Shop Sign at D’Amato Records Destroyed by Construction Crew The iconic HMV sign at D’Amato Records, reputed as the world's oldest record shop located on St John’s Street in Valletta, was smashed overnight between the 3rd and 4th July. Co-owner Anthony D’Amato has attributed the damage to a nearby construction crew. Installed shortly after World War II, this historic sign has been a significant landmark, often cited as the most photographed in Valletta. The destruction occurred due to a crane used by construction workers across the street. The damaged sign, made of perspex, is feared to be irreplaceable. Despite the setback, the contractor, Antain Borg, clarified that the damage was caused by a subcontracted company’s concrete pump. Borg assured that a police report was filed and plans are underway to open an insurance claim to cover repair costs. D’Amato Records, established in 1885, boasts a resilient history, having operated throughout the wartime bombings of Malta. The recent incident is not the only loss of historical artifacts in Valletta; last month, a British-era telephone box was demolished by a delivery truck. The responsible company promptly took accountability, and the Culture Ministry has pledged its restoration. The community now hopes for similar prompt action to restore the beloved HMV sign, preserving a piece of the island’s cultural heritage. Mużika Mod Ieħor Ma' Toni Sant Expands to Radio Broadcast Toni Sant’s long-running podcast, "Mużika Mod Ieħor ma’ Toni Sant," is set to begin broadcasting on Campus 103.7 in Malta, marking a significant new phase for the show. This transition will start today, 4 July 2024. Sant has been producing radio shows on Campus 103.7 since October 2020. After a hiatus of more than 20 years, Sant returned to regular radio broadcasting during the second COVID-19 lockdown and has been on the air weekly since then. His first series, "Vjaġġi Enċiklopediċi," featured interviews with Wikipedians from Malta and other countries, as well as weekly meditations on Wikipedia articles. Following this, Sant produced the research-intensive series "Noti Memorabbli," which aimed to highlight the need for more historiographic sources for the performing arts in Malta. Each 60-minute episode required about 20 hours of research, making it unsustainable beyond one season. In the summer of 2021, Campus FM, as it was then known, broadcast an audiobook version of the award-winning book "Jien-Noti-Jien," co-authored by Sant and Immanuel Mifsud. In October 2021, Sant launched "Mużika 21," offering an hour each week dedicated to the latest releases from the local music scene, exploring oddities, and focusing on albums released in the 21st century. Both "Mużika 21" and "Mużika Mod Ieħor" featured similar playlists, with the podcast including videos for each track and the radio show focusing more on album tracks and oddities. As Sant took on more writing and art curation projects, the weekly podcast was reduced to a monthly offering. This led to the natural progression of bringing "Mużika Mod Ieħor" to the radio while continuing the podcast as an ongoing series. The podcast, which has evolved since its inception in November 2005, will now be broadcast on Campus 103.7. Sant hopes "Mużika Mod Ieħor ma’ Toni Sant" will continue to delight listeners worldwide, documenting the local music scene uniquely. Although the local broadcasting sector has improved in playing more Maltese music, Sant dreams of a time when local musicians no longer struggle for airplay. Weeping Silence Band Update: Some Bad News from the Rhythm Section Back in January, just three weeks after the launch of their 'Isles of Lore' album, Weeping Silence’s drummer Julian Mallia was diagnosed with a knee ligament injury following an unfortunate jogging incident. While the injury is not life-threatening, it has significantly impacted Julian’s ability to perform the intense, double-bass-drum-heavy drumming required by Weeping Silence’s songs. Despite being able to walk, drive, and maintain basic drum practice, Julian has had to take a step back from his full band duties. Earlier this year, as it became clear that the healing process would be lengthy, Julian made the difficult decision to step back temporarily to allow the band to find a replacement drummer. Julian has been making steady progress through physiotherapy sessions. Although the future remains uncertain, there is hope that he will be back on track in a few months if all goes well. In the meantime, Weeping Silence is actively working on new material and is in the process of searching for a replacement drummer who can take over the drumming duties during Julian’s recovery. The band will continue to provide updates on this developing situation. They wish their hardworking bandmate a speedy recovery and, in the meantime, have shared a compilation of Julian’s finest recorded drumming moments from the past few years with Weeping Silence and other music projects.

Berlin-Based Maltese Label My Fair Lsdy Releases Nostalgic Compilation 'Mother Sun' Berlin-based label My Fair Lsdy, founded by Luke Scerri (a.k.a Fake Ophelia) and Belgian Verta Hermov, has launched "Mother Sun," a mix of Maltese songs from the late 1960s and '70s. The compilation includes tracks from The Malta Bums, Vanni Pule & Mary Anne, The Pirates, The Jaywalkers, The Lost Sound, and more. The idea for "Mother Sun" emerged from a desire to create a centralized collection of Maltese pop songs from this era, which were previously scattered across various online and physical archives. Scerri and Hermov meticulously compiled this two-part collection to celebrate the dawn of Maltese pop music. Since the project is non-profit, they decided to release the music as a mix, offering listeners a seamless experience without the need to select individual songs. The duo focused on preserving the original spirit of the recordings, as many well-known tunes from that time were re-recorded in recent decades, losing their authentic essence. The mix also features rare tracks, including an untitled piece by Cinnamon Hades, possibly the first heavy band in Malta's pop scene. Notably, many of these songs are absent from modern streaming platforms, highlighting the significance of this compilation. Scerri emphasizes the importance of remembering and celebrating the artists who paved the way for future musicians, blending western influences with local Mediterranean flavors. The second volume of "Mother Sun" will be released on July 17. Fans can also look forward to Fake Ophelia’s second solo album, "Till I Can Gain Control Again," set to release with My Fair Lsdy in the coming months. Two years ago, the Fehl-Ritzhausen based Maltese singer Joe Mizzi made a triumphant return to the music scene with his fifth solo album, "Psychotic Tranquillity," released on July 1st. This album marks Mizzi's first original work since "Angels Fall" in 2010, signaling a significant comeback for the seasoned musician. Reflecting on the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mizzi shared his journey in a press release at the time. "The COVID years have not been kind to musicians all over the world," he remarked. "Live entertainment was literally banned for almost two years. Many musicians faced the dilemma of either giving up their profession and making a living through other means or facing the prospect of being inactive for a long time. I decided that no matter what, I was not giving up." During the pandemic-induced lockdowns, Mizzi, who had been working as a vocal coach and participating in various tribute projects, found himself with ample time to dedicate to his own music. This unexpected hiatus from live performances spurred a creative resurgence. "The last 10 years, I have been working as a vocal coach and singer in different Tribute Projects, without spending much time writing my own material. When the whole world locked down because of the pandemic, I found myself with a lot of time on my hands, which I spent mostly in my home studio. This is where the song ideas started sprouting again and after writing the first one, I was overloaded with new ones." The resulting album, "Psychotic Tranquillity," encapsulates the dichotomy of tranquility and chaos that characterized Mizzi's lockdown experience. "The album title describes the feeling I had being in lockdown and not being able to perform live. The strange tranquility of deserted streets, closed shops, empty bars, cafes. Just sitting in a room staring out of a window with a thousand thoughts and doubts shooting through your mind, not knowing what the future holds or whether things will ever be the same again. A psychotic unreal silence. And this is what got me to start writing again." "Psychotic Tranquillity" features ten tracks carefully selected from about fifteen initial compositions, each reflecting Mizzi's bluesy hard rock roots with a modern, hand-made touch. The album cover, showcasing Mizzi's unfiltered face, emphasizes the authenticity he aimed to bring to his music. "It's all about the music. The lyrics are about everyday things that influence people's lives, like greed, corrupt politics, social media, conspiracy theories, but also about personal things like depression and suicide with one or two more lighthearted themes." The album also includes notable collaborations, most prominently with Maltese guitarist Wayne Camilleri, whose prog style and versatility added a unique layer to the music. "I had followed Wayne Camilleri from Malta and kept contact on Facebook and I really wanted to work with a Maltese musician. I love his prog style and I think he's one of the most talented guitar players currently in Malta. His soloing on tracks like 'Poor Man's Hero,' 'Great Plan,' 'Rain or Shine,' and 'Skylight' is simply excellent." Guido Pyka, a long-time friend and collaborator of Mizzi, also contributed with a solo on "All or Nothing," enhancing the album's rich musical tapestry. From a young age he studied music on his own initiative and at a later stage received tuition from Fr. Vincent Caruana, Maestro Casapinta, famous clarinettist Wigi Bonnici, the American Guies Wilson and Maestro Carmelo Pace. Through a correspondence course he graduated and received a diploma, under the guide-ship of Leslie Evans. From a young age Vinnie excelled as a clarinettist and in 1947 he was invited to play clarinet solo at Villa Bellini in Catania, Sicily. A year later he formed Vinny’s Blue Jackets, a twelve-piece orchestra, together with his brothers Sunny (who passed away in 1979) on drums and Dominic on bass. His orchestra became a mainstay at the main entertainment hotspots between the 1950’s and the 1980’s, performing every Sunday at the Phoenicia Ballroom and other venues such as Cafe Premier, Strait Street and Chalet in Sliema, amongst others. Vinny’s Blue Jackets performed alongside foreign artists including Albano Carrisi, Bobby Solo, Wilma De Angelis and many more. In 1956, whilst travelling abroad with Xercarm (a renowned sax tenor who performed in Vinnie’s band) they met Billy Haley, who encouraged Vinny to introduce Rock ‘n Roll music to Malta. His musical career, in Malta and abroad, extended well into the 1990’s. In 1955 he married Josephine and they have three children, Antoinette, Carmen and Vinnie Jr., who followed in his father’s footsteps becoming a renowned pianist and forming his own band. Founded in 2019, The Kettle Club aims to make musical theatre accessible to all and serve as a hub for new ideas in the genre. The club's latest production, Sempreviva l-Musical, marks a significant milestone as their first original show. The director, who has extensive experience in both performing and directing, takes on the dual role of producer-director for this fully-fledged musical. She has embraced a collaborative approach, developing the story and lyrics with the performers, and has found the experience deeply rewarding. Performed in Maltese, Sempreviva l-Musical is inspired by a book of short stories by the celebrated novelist Trevor Zahra, who received the National Book Prize Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature in 2020. The director was eager to produce an original musical in Maltese and chose Zahra’s Sempreviva, a collection of short stories that explore the role of flowers in Maltese culture. This choice reflects a patriotic desire to celebrate local flora and educate audiences about the beauty of Malta’s countryside. The book contains over 50 short stories, but only a select few could be included in the musical. After careful selection, four stories were woven into a central narrative based on the story "L-Anġlu tad-dlamijiet," which explores the beauty in both life and death. The musical’s title, Sempreviva, is inspired by a flower that lives forever, symbolizing the theme of eternal life. A recurring motif in the script poses the question, “X’tiswa fjura li ma tmut qatt?” (What is the worth of a flower that lives forever?). The production encourages audiences to embrace the present, moving beyond past regrets. Clint Chircop stars as Orren, the main protagonist, making his musical theatre debut. He is supported by seasoned performers Karl Bartolo, Charlotte Formosa, Sean Borg, and Lara Agius, who portray multiple characters, including Orren’s deceased wife Cara, the love of his life; gossipy family members Bianca and Albert; and Riza, a girl who reminds Orren of Cara and gives him a renewed sense of purpose.
