  • Resurrecting Sceptocrypt: An Odyssey Through Time and Sound

The initial incarnation of Sceptocrypt emerged in 1992 but took a hiatus in 1999 after putting out a demo and a rehearsal tape. Fast forward to 2022, the group's founder, Malcolm, began collaborating with various musicians, revisiting songs he penned in 2014 and exploring fresh ideas. Thus, Sceptocrypt made its return. Melodija.eu recently caught up with Malcolm for a chat about the band's revival. What inspired the formation of Sceptocrypt in 1992? In 1987, I, was turned onto metal at secondary school, and by 88 I was already avidly trying to get my hand on any obscure tape some underground figures (mostly older than me) had. This led to me starting tape trading as well as learning guitar sometime in 1989. Fast forward 1 or 2 years with some riffs under my belt, I started a band with some mates called Cruxicore, but it did not go anywhere, and only bass player Marco and I survived from that line-up. Along the way we merged into a 5-piece and changed to Sceptocrypt. How did Sceptocrypt aim to differentiate itself in the extreme metal scene of the 1990s? Vocalist Conrad & I ardently into the 90's underground scene running Rancid Soup zine & radio show, and the rest of the band listening to anything we were raving about, we were always listening to what is fresh in the scene. So in turn we tried to deliver fresh ideas of our own. Being music scholars, we pushed ourselves to deliver this with the highest form of technique we then mastered. With new members bringing in more ideas, we tried to forge an own sound, merging extreme metal (at a time where the tag was not yet penned to define bands cross-bordering death, doom, black metal and more) with other non-metal styles, yet not loosing our abrasive edge. Despite disbanding in 1999, what led to the release of your unreleased CD "!26 Hrs 72 mins...the need to differ" in 2014? When we disbanded, I moved away from Malta few years later, initially to Germany and later to England. Here I became active with a jazz-world music band EthnaMorte for about a decade, but when that went into hiatus I started Sceptocrypt again. So we released the CD only online to coincide with this rebirth. Maybe eventually we will also release it on physical CD, who knows? What prompted the revival of Sceptocrypt in 2022, leading to the release of "The Unwanted Requiem" and "The Wards Outside" in 2023 and 2024 respectively? Although Sceptocrypt initially resurfaced in 2014, as we could not complete a line-up, we all went our separate ways. But I personally cannot stay away from being musically creative, and in 2022 I finally met a drummer and bassist and got working on more songs. Although we were planning to release “The Wards Outside” first, “The Unwanted Requiem” came from out of nowhere. Basically I was called to Malta as my mom was unwell, she then passed away, and in my bitter feelings of loss, I borrowed a guitar and booked a studio, and that song was born. As I wanted to release it not far from her passing in Sept 2023, the song was released 2 months later. Eventually “The Wards Outside” was released in Feb 2024. And this is actually closer to the new direction to expect from us. Although we hold the right to surprise you howsoever. How does Sceptocrypt describe their new sound, Extreme Music Research? To quote our own manifesto from our bio - Extreme – undettered by trying different forms of experimentation, from over-the-top technical riffs to the lack of same in form of time & harmonic changes that flow seamlessly, an extremity measured in the myriad of influences recalled to shape the final aural palette. Music – in a time when visual media continually compliments the music industry, we aim to present you music that evokes you the more you close your eyes, aiding you to see colours with your ears, where colour has no limit set by your visual spectrum, and thus extreme! Research – we shall be free to research past effective music templates as we merge them with/as merchants to/for future sounds Could you kindly provide an introduction to the new band members, offering some insights into each of them? Sure, we got Dip on bass. He brings to the table a touch of jazz and funk. He also adds a lot of groove to balance my harmonic dissonance. And is a good producer for recording purposes. Then we got Andrea who brings in electronic sounds & sampling. He is into EBM & industrial, so ensures it all stays abrasive. I am currently singing, but this is more till we find a decent vocalist ready to front our avant-garde ship. I would prefer that live shows are accompanied by a vocalist completely free to engage with the audience and play with his voice, and myself completely focused on the guitar. We had a drummer, but now no more, so we are looking for one. Andrea is meanwhile setting some electronic beats to keep the flow going, but wether we introduce this live (in compliment to a drummer) or on record is still to be seen. It is good to have options, but our main aim is to find a drummer, so if anyone is London based reading this, contact us via band@sceptocrypt.com When and where will Sceptocrypt perform their first live gig in 27 years? We have been invited to play the 11th anniversary of Renaissance Alt Music Fest on 26th May 2024. This has been running yearly in London for a while now, but is the 1st time it will be open air. The bands' line-up is very diverse – have a look at https://www.facebook.com/events/1071516140643831 As we still have no drummer, we have decided to do something we never done before – to present Sceptocrypt in a completely acoustic format. Probably this will be the 1st and only time we do so (our intention is to find a drummer), so be there! Where can interested individuals find more information about Sceptocrypt's biography, interviews, reviews, and contact details? At www.sceptocrypt.com, which includes links to all our socials, going by the handle of @sceptocrypt. Any famous last words? Yes. Firstly, thanks to your readers for the time to read what we have to say. And to you for crafting the questions and giving us space on Melodija.eu. All our music from the 90s to now, can be heard at www.sceptocrypt.com/lyrics-songs, and if anyone reading runs a mag you can also review any of the works. • Philip Vella OMM Tribute/Għanja lil Ġużi/Remembering Paul Mifsud/ Halcyon's new member!

Philip Vella's OMM: A Musical Tribute to Mothers Composer Philip Vella has recently unveiled a new track titled OMM, a heartfelt tribute to all mothers, released fittingly on Mother's Day. This piece holds particular significance for him as it honors his beloved mother Esther, who passed away on October 15, 2022, transitioning into eternity. Having been deeply ingrained in the local music scene for years, Philip Vella has garnered considerable acclaim with compositions such as X’Jimpurtani, securing second place at the L-Għanja tal-Poplu festival in 1995, and Kemm Jien Beżżul, which clinched the top spot at the same festival just three years later. Yet, OMM exudes a distinct vibe, albeit resonating closely with the stylistic essence he cherishes. This resonance is evident in his album 60+, featuring tracks like Għalfejn Tħobbni Daqshekk, Allura, Ġenna u Infern, and the deeply personal Pa, where Philip reflects on his relationship with his father. Music Video: Youtube Amber unveils the official music video for 'Għanja lil Ġużi In a whirlwind of passion and dedication, last January marked a pivotal moment in Amber's life. With the joy of new motherhood still fresh, she found herself right back in the spotlight, gracing the judge's panel for the live show of X Factor Malta. Yet, amidst the glitz and glam and the tension of the finale, she unveiled a deeply personal creation alongside her trusted collaborator, Elton Zarb: 'Għanja lil Guzi', a tender lullaby straight from the heart. Her performance was nothing short of magical, leaving an indelible mark on all who witnessed it. Soon after, the song resonated far beyond the confines of the stage, becoming a cherished anthem for parents across social media platforms. Fast forward to this weekend, Amber unveiled the official music video for 'Għanja lil Ġużi'. The response? Nothing short of spectacular. In a mere 24 hours, the video soared past 5,000 views, claiming its rightful place as the #1 trending music video on YouTube. Crafted by the team at tribe. with Olwyn Jo being the artistic director, the the music video is a story being told by visuals. Set against the backdrop of Amber's heartfelt lyrics, it features a number of real-life parents and their precious children, each frame brimming with raw emotion. And if you look closely, you might just catch a glimpse of some familiar faces and even Ġużi himself which adds an extra layer of connection to this deeply moving narrative. In this mesmerizing union of music and visuals, 'Għanja lil Guzi' transcends its status as a mere lullaby, emerging as a timeless ode to the joys and challenges of parenthood. He was widely recognized for his expertise and influence, particularly within the realms of the Record Centre, Exotique, and Music Club, where he became a fixture and a respected authority. Mifsud's impact extended beyond his roles in music venues. In 1991, he took to the airwaves to host the program "Xejn Ħlief Rock" on Radio 101, a show that left an indelible mark on listeners with its eclectic mix and deep dives into rock music. His contributions to various programs alongside notable figures like Eric Montfort and Alfie Fabri underscored his versatility and passion for sharing his musical knowledge. His expertise in popular music, especially classic rock, was unparalleled. Mifsud was a veritable font of knowledge and critical appraisal, often regarded on par with the most esteemed critics. His insights into the works of icons like Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones elevated the discourse surrounding these artists in Malta's music scene. Paul Mifsud's legacy as Malta's foremost expert on the music of Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones is undeniable. His profound impact on the local music community, through his contributions to venues, radio programs, and critical discourse, will be felt for years to come. In this time of mourning, heartfelt condolences go out to all who knew and respected Paul Mifsud. His presence will be deeply missed, but his influence will endure, leaving an indelible mark on Malta's musical landscape. Zabbeth's debut rereleased on tape as an ultra-limited run via Chaos & Hell Productions To mark the one year anniversary of their highly acclaimed LP release, Zabbeth's self-titled debut album has been treated to a cassette tape re-release through Chaos & Hell Productions from Greece with a special run of only 66 copies! This time round, the album gets a new look featuring yellow cassette casing and a 5-panel gloss finished J-card printed on both sides. This 5 panel print allowed for a larger font to be used and every panel is dedicated to it's own song! Paul Formosa of Sonic Storm and Ascendor fame, played drums giving a powerfully solid performace throughout all the tracks. The mind behind this project, Sean "Chaos" Attard, stated "For those less familiar with Zabbeth, this project is pure Bathory worship, and in this specific release, Bathory's self titled release, trying to emulate that dark and evil feeling from the yellow goat album of 1984!" Zabbeth's self-titled debut was originally released in CD format on the 7th of August 2022 through Witches Brew, the renowned German underground label responsible for discovering important acts such as Toxic Holocaust, Gama Bomb, Insulter, Rapture and Deathhammer, amongst others (some of which will sound familiar as they have blessed our shores with their electrifying performances). • Drummers, Marriages & Other Stories!

The drummer of Divine Sinners ties the knot. The Melodija team extends heartfelt congratulations to Paul Saviour Spiteri, the drummer of Gozitan band Divine Sinners, and his longtime partner Matilde, on their marriage last Saturday, April 27th, in Xaghra, Gozo. The celebration was further enlivened by an impromptu performance from Paul Saviour, his bandmates and a couple of guest singers, much to the joy of all attendees. Additionally, it has been revealed that Divine Sinners are currently in the studio working on their forthcoming album, slated for release later this year. Valeriana: A Musical Journey from Past to Present Valeriana – The Titan’s Rock that started being written by the late Gozitan composer Joseph Vella, Maestro Vella did not manage to finish this work, as he passed away when he was about half-way through. The opera was concluded by Maestro Christopher Muscat, a former student of Maestro Vella, and will be performed or the first time at the Astra Theatre. It was intended to be his biggest ever work; unfortunately, he had only completed an abridged version up to half-way stage. The first two acts are the work of Maestro Vella, and the last two acts are my work. It is a great honour for me to continue a work by Professor Vella, and when I was preparing the orchestration, memories of his lessons came to mind. It was very emotional for me to be able to continue with this work. Christopher Muscat – Director and composer of Valeriana Valeriana is the story of Rosario, a Maltese fisherman who, after marrying a local girl, ends up on the tiny Italian island of Valeriana during World War II, an island then under the control of a fascist leader named Cirillo. This is a brand new piece in English set in 1943 on an Italian island right in the heart of World War II under Mussolini’s reign…..its historically very interesting as it resonates with the Maltese, that particular period the 40s was such a difficult time. The cast is amazing, a mixture of local and foreign artists who are just exceptional and taking it to new levels. Denise Mulholland The opera is a production of Festivals Malta, and will be presented at the Astra Theatre on 4 May, with the participation of the National Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Muscat. Chaotic Remains Welcomes Drummer Keiston Busuttil! In a recent announcement on their social network pages, Chaotic Remains eagerly introduced their newest member, drummer Keiston Busuttil. With a familiar presence in the Maltese metal scene, Keiston's arrival is met with excitement and anticipation. Demonstrating unwavering commitment to music, he has dedicated himself tirelessly in recent months. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned to the band's Facebook and Instagram pages for forthcoming updates on upcoming shows and new material. There, they'll have the opportunity to witness Keiston's talent in action firsthand. Prayer Of The Dying: New Logo and Upcoming Release Martin Ciapara, the mastermind behind the revived one-man band Prayer Of The Dying, recently unveiled the project's new logo on April 9th. Additionally, he recently announced that the upcoming release, which has been in progress since January, is nearing completion. Titled 'Falling,' the track features vocals by Simon Deguara and is both produced and mixed by Deguara himself. In 2006, Martin initiated this project and swiftly followed with his debut album, "Structures of a Dying Matter," released in April 2007. Since then, he has launched four additional full-length albums and six splits, in addition to various demos and EPs. His most recent release, "Banished from Death," came out on May 13th, 2017. Owen Leuellen Continues Momentum with Release of Latest Track 'Can't Be Stopped' Owen Leuellen, the dynamic and versatile artist, reaffirms his creative dynamics with the launch of his newest track 'Can't Be Stopped,' following the success of his recent album 'Out Of Darkness.' While 'Can't Be Stopped' may not boast the same commercial appeal as previous hits like 'Flavour' and 'Juice,' it shines a spotlight on Leuellen's unparalleled storytelling prowess and the authentic emotion woven into his delivery. Leuellen emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balance between commercial and less mainstream tracks, a strategy he believes resonates deeply with his dedicated fan base, keeping his artistry genuine and relatable. Shot during his time in Los Angeles last year, the accompanying music video adds another layer of depth to Leuellen's compelling storytelling. As Owen Leuellen continues to push creative boundaries, 'Can't Be Stopped' serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication to authentic expression and artistic integrity. • Reminiscing Dark Malta 2024

The Amazing Ms. Lia Hide An early start on Friday, 19th April 2024, at the first day of the Dark Malta Festival – 5th Anniversary, was awarded with a superb performance by Greek artist Lia Hide, accompanied by her band featuring Dennis Morfis on guitars, bassist Aki’ Base and George Rados on drums.  Her virtuosity on the keyboard and the lyricism of her song writing shined through.  With what seemed an effortless performance Hide transmitted her message and left the crowd waiting for more. For those not familiar, Lia Hide is an Athenian singer / songwriter, producer, music educator and performer.  Her music can be described as dark, art, avant grade and a bit pop.  After a prolific recording past in the Greek Electronica, with numerous releases, albums, collaborations, and compilations.   She has collaborated and appeared with Tricky, KBHTA, Kovacs, Joseph van Wissem, Anneke van Giersberg, Keep Shelly, Molly Nilsson, Kadebostany, Robin Skouteris, Ida Nielsen, Lucy Woodward just to name a few. Lia Hide is constantly touring throughout Europe, USA and Canada to promote her music. To date Lia Hide has released 4 solo studio albums: “Home” [EMI-Universal, 2013], “Everyone Seems to Know Who I Am” [DontHideMe, 2017], “Tells no Fairytales” [DontHideMe, 2019 – vinyl by B-OtherSideRecords], “The Missing Fourth Guest” [Conch Town Records, 2022] a Remix album: “Fairytales Remixed” [Amour Records, 2019] and music for the Dance drama “ΓΕΝΟΚΤΟΝΙΑ” by Pavlos Kourtidis (2019) “GENOCIDE” by Idalgos Records. More information can be optioned from  www.liahide.com and www.facebook.com/lia.hide How was your first experience in Malta?  Did you manage to enjoy our island apart of performing at Dark Malta Festival? We absolutely loved it! We stayed at St. Paul's bay, and although at first it seemed like a ghost town, as we arrived really early on that Thursday, it didn't take long to realize that was not the case, not at all! We were also celebrating my birthday (all through the weekend..) so we made sure we wined and dined at every occasion and place (meaning pub, restaurant or our hotel room balcony!). We spent the last day in Valletta, which was beyond anything we could imagine, simply gorgeous, and Dennis had the chance to visit Mdina a little and reported how amazingly beautiful it was (I unfortunately had to stay at our merch table, but don't regret it a bit, met amazing people and made new friends, right there!) What is the first music you remember hearing whilst growing up and what where are your main influences? The very first music I heard (that I remember) was the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel and a specific album of Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis that was recorded in New York and produced by Quincy Jones, Joconda's Smile – we used to travel a lot in Europe with my family and most of the music I remember was the ones my dad chose for the road trips. Now, my main influences is a whole different chapter. There's a lot of the 90s grunge (and not only) scene in me, and I absolutely love Faith no More, Soundgarden and NIN, grew up when the Prodigy, Massive Attack and Rage Against the Machine emerged, but at the same time I've listened to a lot of Jazz, Classical, Film Music, especially Ennio Morricone, and then again, my first vinyl album I bought was Pet Shop Boys' Behavior while I adore Cindy Lauper, and not to forget : I call myself Kate Bush's daughter and Tori Amos' sister, so you understand it's all over the place! Does a classical background training help even when writing modern tunes and electronica?I can't say it does, on the contrary, a classical background may be tricky, as electronic music tends to be rather simple in structure and harmony, so I actually have to scold myself and go back again and again and edit and take out stuff, all the time. It does however help me in particular to formulate my personal musical character, so this is more or less why I choose avant pop as a genre, it seems to be embracing what I do, more accurately (check the wikipedia article on that, I love it!). My sound engineer in Athens used to say that us classically trained singers and vocal teachers are a pain in the a$s to record, as we never let go of what we've been taught, never sing freely, and I have to agree it took me some time to go back to being a punk soul as a singer! The biggest issue though, is that studying classical music you are sooner or later imposed with a burden, the notion that you continue the legacy and are obliged in a way to be as good as your predecessors, so that makes us our worse enemies, nothing is ever good enough. That is the bigger obstacle one has to overcome. How would you describe the style of the songs on your solo albums? Each album is a different story, both as a narrative in my lyrics, as well as in musical style. My first album HOME is toooo long, and far too complicated in production, but then again, that was me back then. I moved on to a more southern-nightmare, dark-folk second album with murder ballads, whereas my third album was more alternative with more aggressiveness and I started writing more social and political songs, let the guitar go distorted and used unusual song lengths and structures, which lead to the fourth album that is, to me, the most mature to date (seems natural I suppose). It's where I let go of all biases and insecurities (lockdown can do that to you) and released all my music influences and needs, so there's jazz and trip hop and post punk and progressive and spoken word and harder themes to talk about. All of them albums are concept albums, but I think I fully elaborated and expanded the fundamentals of the idea of the concept album on the Missing Fourth Guest. Tell us a bit about your musical journey between your first solo album ‘Home’ released in 2013 and ‘The Missing Fourth Guest’ (2022).I took me a while to release my second album, after a turbulent departure from EMI-Universal (that released my 1st album) and I deeply regret that. I lost way too much time, and way too much energy struggling with that bullying I suffered there, but bounced back eventually, and decided to work only with small indie labels from then on - until the label of my dreams will knock on the door (if you have any friends at Sargent House, please let them know..). The band around me stayed more or less the same, George Rados drums, has been my best friend since we were 14 years old, and I could not imagine this without him. Aki'Base bass, joined us a decade ago, just in time for the 2nd album, and this hugely effected our style, as he brought in all this amazing dark wave, melodic bass lines and post attitude, and Dennis Morfis has been by my side since my 1st album's presentation, took but a small hiatus to work on his own projects, only to be replaced by two of Greece's most amazing and prolific guitar players, the Godess of guitar that is Irene Ketikidi, and Panos Papazoglou, and now Dennis is back to stay. We decided to add a trumpet for the 4th album, the amazing Stelios Chatzikaleas, which you did not see at Dark Malta, alas, as it tends to be rather costly to fly a 5-piece bands overseas, but I promise we will have him with, next time! Apart from working with these amazing gentlemen I also took some time to study a bit more, finished another Master’s degree, this time in Songwriting, in Bath, and started writing music for the Theater and Dance Dramas, while in the meantime I took it fully upon me to be the tour and general manager of the band as no-one else could/would fill in those shoes. We started touring overseas after the 2nd album, as we realized that there is no scene for us in Greece, and if it were not for Covid, we'd have reached half a thousand shows by now, I figure, but then again, we wouldn't have written that unique 4th album – so no regrets! It's been busy, to say the least! Prior to releasing your solo albums, you collaborated frequently with other established artists.  How did that help you in your career? When I was younger, I was always in bands, since really really young, like 13 years old. When my last teenage band broke up, I quit the idea of releasing music, as I had no band, and these two seemed inevitably bound together, to me. So, in a way, if it were not for all these collaborative projects, I would have probably have pursued an academic music career or be a musical theater performer (which doesn't sound that bad, come to think of it). Being in the recording industry kept me running so in a way I was always ready to embark on the 'Lia Hide' (Lia Hide is not my real name – it's a loooong Greek one (!) but I'd rather not share it) journey. I took the decision to start my 'solo' project however, when the producers I worked with wanted to do soulful music in Greek, and I hated that idea. I don't hate the idea of Greek as a language in music, I am actually about to release some myself. I do hate the idea of creating music aiming specifically and only for money and only that, like, cheesy, silly love songs. So, this is more or less the turning point, when I decided I was not in it for the money, rather, I wanted to make tomorrow better, I wanted to communicate and I wanted to meet other people and understand how the world turns. Apart from the fascinating soundscape your albums offer food for thought through the lyrics.  What are the subjects covered on your songs and what message do you want to get through to your listeners? In the beginning there was love. Everyone feels safe discussing the romance and breakups and wounded heart. But to be honest, I have very few love songs and they are all about stupid ex's and their manipulative nature, so there's one subject, hurt and pain when my arm's twisted. Then there are a few songs on my family, and I need to ask them to forgive me, but have not been the most easy going and healthy of families, I have to admit, and they really messed me up. So, there's abuse, and sentimental bullying and then, my biggest fear, growing up to be a mean, old, sick in the head - woman, like my grandma. And a theme that always fascinated me, serial killers! So, there you have it, the theme of psychological disorders. There's songs about death (we lost loved ones in Covid) and there's songs about birth and children than never came. And then, there's social injustice, defending the weak and shouting out for the destruction of our planet, the capitalistic consumption of all that beautiful and healthy, just for the sick sake of profit. That's quite a range of themes, I have to say! But what I want to get through once the curtain falls and you leave our show to go home, is that it's ok if you're not ok, it's ok if you are strange, and it may be ugly and hard, but we'll make it, we just have to. The world, once again, is going through a turbulent period.  Do you think that music can help by bringing people together?I honestly don't know. Music has changed into a very commercialized product more than ever. I don't know how when Tay-Tay and Queen B are flooding the information stream, other genres can survive – I feel like all others are shrunk into a niche. Yet, I realize that now, more than ever, there is a huge gap between American and European Music, and I have great faith in our culture (but not our politics) here, in Europe (90% of the American mainstream music I hear lately is really useless to me, and even worse, I've followed amazing artists that once they reach the more mainstream stats, their music quality starts to deteriorate ). It seems odd but I feel like for the first time in my life, the American market does not interest me at all. I find the Europeans more alert and thirsty for art and evolution and change, and that is optimistic – but of course, I am biased, as I have visited and performed in many showcases and festivals in Europe, post Covid, and none in the US – so I am not being very fair with them Americans, am I? Although I am a teacher and very close to the younger generation, I don't fully comprehend what young artists are doing at the moment, only in the electronica, avant-garde, experimental and jazz scenes can I follow up. Living in the Balkans, with all that Trap and Turbofolk music, you tend to lose hope, but then again there's amazing hip hop and dark wave and punk and of course Metal, and I see a huge rise of numbers in festivals and festival crowds, so maybe now, especially after the Covid lockdowns, people will be united through music, at least through live music! Any new projects in the pipeline? We are travelling to Bulgaria in the 1st of May 2024, funded by Culture Moves Europe to spend 2 weeks isolated in a house in a forest and record and create. We have sketches for 2 albums in the making, one in Greek and one in English, we will finish one of them, and in the meantime we hope we will find a new label that is more fit to what we do and who understand and love our musical identity. We love Conch Town Records and they have been treating us like royals, as all of the small indie labels we've worked with in the past, but we feel we need a big push now, so we need to find those people who understand we are magic, which kind of magic, and want the world to be charmed by our spells! Any message you may wish to impart, especially to artists struggling to make it through in the music industry?Tough question. What is there to say? Right now, as I am typing these words, I am sleepless for a week, my head's filled with ideas, and in the same time I have to work (I teach at a Conservatory, have 20+ very demanding students) to fund what we do, go through contracts and agreements and edit some videos, but will also go to a few much anticipated concerts these days (Electric Litany, Sevdaliza) in Athens. What I am trying to say is, work hard, but really hard, work as hard as you can, learn how to do more than just sing or play an instrument, be very good at your instrument, rehearse, study and listen and join other musicians, try to find the people to help you, but at the same time try not to wear yourself out, listen to new music, perform as much and as best as you can and go see other artists, be out there. And most importantly, respect others, be kind and be honest, be yourself – and take the time to figure out who you are. The audience will always tell a lie, always. Would you consider performing in Malta again if the opportunity arises?Of course I would (I already miss it.. it was WOW!) please let me know when!!!

  • Feel the Magic of Orchestral Progressive Rock - press release

Chorus Urbanus Productions has announced its latest concert from the ‘Feel the Magic’ programme: ‘Feel the Magic of Orchestral Progressive Rock’. This concert will feature the première of Edward Mifsud’s concept album Raġġ, an orchestral work inspired by the progressive rock style that originated in the UK in the early 1970s, with lyrics derived from Maltese poetry from the same era, namely Oliver Friggieri, Marjanu Vella, Ġorġ Peresso, Achille Mizzi, Joe Friggieri, and Ġorġ Borg. Raġġ explores the dualities of hope and helplessness, secrecy and openness, individualism and collectivism, youth and old age, and life and death, which all fall within the work's overarching theme of light and darkness. These dichotomies are resolved in the work’s final piece, which discusses harmony and connectedness. Such themes echo the juxtaposition of “masculine” and “feminine” traits, a common characteristic of progressive rock music. The programme will also feature music by prominent progressive rock bands ELP, Yes, King Crimson, and Genesis, arranged and orchestrated by Edward Mifsud in the style of Raġġ. ‘Feel the Magic of Orchestral Progressive Rock’ will be held on Saturday 18 th May 2024 at Teatru Astra, featuring the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Dr Mro John Galea, and special guests Dorothy Bezzina and Chris Grech. Tickets are available online from teatruastra.org.mt. This project is generously supported by Arts Council Malta, the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, the Cultural Heritage Directorate, Melita Foundation, APS Bank, and Teatru Astra.

  • New releases by Morsrot & Tribali / Skorch unveils new member / Ritmu Roots festival

Morsrot's EP SEPTICEMIA out now Morsrot's EP "Septicemia" marks a significant evolution for the young death metal outfit. Born from the creative minds of four musicians, aged 15 to 17, this sophomore release reflects a period of growth and exploration for the band. • Philharmonic Founder Remembered, Dark Malta Schedule, Rock the South 11, Anecdotes Of Maltese Early Jazz

Passing of Joseph Sammut: Composer and Founder of Malta Philharmonic Orchestra Joseph Sammut, the esteemed composer credited with founding the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, has passed away. Aged 97, he was among the nation's foremost orchestra conductors in the post-war era, and he breathed his last at Mater Dei hospital on Wednesday. In one of his final artistic endeavors in 2020, amidst the peak of the pandemic, Sammut unveiled his composition "Adagio-Remembrance," a poignant piece dedicated to the memory of the countless lives lost. Born in Valletta in 1926, he commenced his musical education under the tutelage of his father, Vincenzo Sammut, a bassoonist at the Royal Opera House and a cellist with the Orchestra of the Commander in Chief of the Royal Navy. Following in his father’s footsteps, Sammut initially joined the orchestra as a bassoonist in 1942. However, the majority of his career was devoted to conducting and composing. For 16 years, he served as the conductor of the Orchestra of the Commander in Chief of the Royal Navy, until its disbandment in 1968 following the country's independence. Subsequently, he established the Manoel Theatre Orchestra, where he held the position of chief conductor until 1993. This orchestra later evolved into the National Symphony Orchestra and ultimately the esteemed Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1970 to 2006, Sammut served as the musical director of the Societa' Filarmonica La Vallette, and in 1970, he conducted the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra in Japan. His illustrious career also encompassed notable performances such as conducting the inaugural concert at the Aurora Opera House in Gozo in 1976, followed by the premiere opera performance in Gozo, "Madame Butterfly," in 1977. In 2023, Sammut was actively involved in and conducted the Foundation Day Concert with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Despite residing at the care home Casa Antonia in his later years and battling illness, those close to him attested that he continued to immerse himself in music, both listening and composing, until his final days. Sincere condolences to the Sammut family. • USHERING THE DARKNESS – DARK MALTA FESTIVAL 2024

From its humble beginnings in 2018, Dark Malta Festival continues to grow and flourish beyond expectation, drawing to the island international acts and many festival goers who have added this yearly event to their calendar. Malta’s only Gothic/Industrial/Metal Festival was born after DJ Hades and Aleera De Lune decided to organize a Gothic Festival. It started out with a one-day event in 2018 with Diary of Dreams and Gothminister as headliners. The response was good and 2019 the festival grew into a two day event with And One and Lord of the Lost as headliners and an array of good bands and artists performing. Covid hit and we had to wait until 2022 for the third edition. This was the first edition held at Gianpula Village Main Room. Three days with an incredible line up including Covenant, Moonspell, Combichrist and much more. 2023 was the biggest edition yet with And One, Deathstars, Project Pitchfork and many other acts and DJ’s keeping the crowd jumping form afternoon till the early hours of the morning. The weather was clement, and a 2-day pool party was also introduced. One must mention that apart of bringing foreign acts to Malta, this event serves also as an opportunity for local bands and talent to be introduced to an international crowd. 2024 – The 5th Anniversary Dark Malta Festival will be back with a bang between 19th and 21st April 2024, at the Gianpula Village Main Room for its 5th Anniversary.  Apart from the bands and DJ’s this year’s event will once more include the Rooftop Pool Party on Saturday and Sunday and an after party on Saturday night. • A Lily 'Saru l-Qamar' - press release

James Vella returns as his musical alias A Lily with the new album ‘Saru l-Qamar’ - setting archival Maltese home recordings to new music for an album of trademark nostalgic quasi-ambiance. Phantom Limb / Kewn Records | PHNTM041 | LP, Digital | April 5th 2024 “Thanks to the Maltese language's old Arabic roots and Vella's ambient inclinations, the music [on Saru I-Oamar] evokes a crossroads between Saint Abdullah's grandiose, industrialised compositions of Shia orations and the cosy nostalgia of Ernest Hood's suburban neighbourhood field recordings.” - The Wire “Vella brings an impressionist response to his sources, lifting them into the evocative space of memory and dream on clouds of glowing hardware synthesis. Holding their mystery and humanity.” - The Quietus From the 60’s until the modern era, it was common for Maltese families to receive reel tapes from relatives abroad. Maltese emigrés resettled in Australia, the UK, Canada etc. would record their news onto cassette - often in the form of għana, traditional Maltese song - and mail the tapes back home. Amazingly, through the superlative archival work of Malta’s nonprofit heritage foundation Magna Żmien, many of these tapes still exist. A Lily (Phantom Limb boss and musician James Vella) - who is Maltese - was allowed access to Magna Żmien’s collection and in late 2022 began creating new musical works responding to these recordings. These works take up the oneiric bliss of new album Saru l-Qamar [Eng: They Became The Moon], his first release on his own label, and released in Malta under Kewn Records. Arranged alongside hardware synthesis and “minimal DAW intervention”, the recordings on Saru l-Qamar take on ghostly, spiritual new qualities. Simple storytelling and news-sharing (“there was a burglar in the house yesterday”, “I can’t tell you how much I miss Malta”, “do your utmost to spend all your money at the feast”) become plaintive and evocative elegies for friends and family lost to time. “This is the meaning of the album title,” Vella writes. “Though these people have left us, they can never be truly forgotten, as without them we would not be here. They become part of the fabric of our lives, remaining forever and inexorably within the makeup of every subsequent generation. They have become the moon - always present, but always out of reach.” James Vella’s A Lily project was most recently seen with twin releases Sleep Through the Storm and Nocturne Thunder, released on The Ransom Note’s Bytes label in 2020 and 2022 respectively. These two releases and Saru l-Qamar see Vella turn to synthesis and electronic instrumentation following his more band-orientated previous album of 2018. Vella is also a founding member of acclaimed act yndi halda, and has run the Phantom Limb label since its inception in 2017, releasing a range of eclectic records by Loraine James, Kevin Richard Martin (The Bug), Ami Dang, and more. ‘Saru l-Qamar’ Tracklist: 1. Żeżina Ddoqq is-Sħab 2. Kemm Nixtieq Li Qed 3. Flimkien Ngħaddu Mill-Bieb 4. Ħajti Kollha, Qalbi 5. Nitolbu Lil Dawk Li Lejlu 6. Tħallinix 7. Erba' Aħwa 8. Sirna l-Qamar 9. Issa, Kuljum, Għal Dejjem Żgħażagħ Saru l-Qamar is available now on limited coloured vinyl, digital and streaming platforms. Order a physical copy from Bandcamp HERE. Established in 2017, Kewn Records, led by Nick Morales with mentorship from James Vella (of Phantom Limb), fills a void in Malta's music scene. With a goal of elevating local talent professionally, the label, assisted by coordinator Nicholas Bonello, has since released alternative music from the  likes of BILA, The Areola Treat, Krishna, Niket and more. With 6 albums, 8 EPs, and 12 singles, Kewn Records acts as a one-stop shop for musicians, amplifying Malta's musical impact globally. This project is supported by Arts Council Malta

This track encapsulates the essence of the album, which intertwines archival Maltese home recordings with new music, resulting in a captivating blend of nostalgic quasi-ambience and cross-generational dialogue. Set to be released on April 5th, 2024, via Phantom Limb / Kewn Records, "Saru l-Qamar" marks a significant departure for Vella, who delves into the rich tapestry of Maltese cultural heritage to craft a unique musical experience. The album's title, meaning "They Became The Moon" in English, hints at its thematic exploration of memory, loss, and the enduring presence of those who came before us. 'Tħallinix' emerges as a pivotal track within the album, with Vella explaining its profound significance: "The singer in the recording is expressing so much anguish that my contribution as arranger fell into place almost in real time." The poignant piano lines and haunting melodies serve as a response to the raw emotions conveyed in the original recording, creating a deeply moving musical dialogue that resonates long after the song concludes. The creation of "Saru l-Qamar" was inspired by the archival work of Malta’s nonprofit heritage foundation, Magna Żmien, which preserves reel tapes containing traditional Maltese songs and familial messages sent by emigrants to their homeland. Through access to these recordings, Vella embarked on a journey of musical reinterpretation, breathing new life into age-old sentiments and stories. Accompanied by minimal DAW intervention and hardware synthesis, the tracks on "Saru l-Qamar" exude a ghostly, ethereal quality, transforming simple narratives into poignant elegies. As Vella aptly describes, "Though these people have left us, they can never be truly forgotten, as without them we would not be here." "Saru l-Qamar" follows A Lily's previous releases, including "Sleep Through the Storm" and "Nocturne Thunder," showcasing Vella's versatility as a musician and his ability to craft evocative sonic landscapes. With this latest offering, Vella invites listeners to embark on a transcendent journey through time and memory, where the past intertwines with the present to create something truly timeless. The album will be available on limited colored vinyl, digital, and streaming platforms on April 5th, with pre-orders currently open on Bandcamp. • Time Lord: A Historic Night of Musical Tribute

Leo Stivala Leads Pagan Altar Homage in Iconic Performance at The Garage, Zebbug Many might not be aware, but on Saturday night 16th March history was being written at The Garage in Zebbug when a group of iconic musicians and a legend singer came together to perform under the moniker of Time Lord. The musicians were Andy Green on drums, Diccon Harper on bass, Denis Schneider and Alan Jones, both on guitars. Collectively, together with Brendan Radigan on vocals they are the latest reincarnation of Pagan Altar. On the night these fine bunch of gentlemen were fronted by Maltese legend Leo Stivala, the reason being that they could not appear as Pagan Altar due to the fact that it was not possible for Brendan to travel from the US. But before we go into the ‘history has been made’ bit, let’s get to know the protagonists a little bit better. Formed in 1978 amidst the vibrant borough of Brockley in London, Pagan Altar stands as a cornerstone of English doom metal, crafted by the hands of Terry Jones and his son Alan. Alongside Witchfinder General, they epitomize the fusion of doom metal within the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement. Their live performances are a tapestry of moody, epic melodies intertwined with heavy rhythms, accentuated by stage effects that delve into their fascination with occult themes. During the NWOBHM epoch, Pagan Altar unveiled their musical prowess through an independent, self-released demo album, aptly titled "Pagan Altar." Despite facing rampant bootlegging in subsequent years, this seminal work found its rightful place in metal history when it was officially reissued as "Volume 1" by Oracle Records in 1998. The band's journey saw a resurgence in 2004 when they reunited with a mission to resurrect previously unreleased material from their early days. The result was the acclaimed album "Lords of Hypocrisy," which resonated deeply with fans. This success paved the path for their third full-length album, "Mythical and Magical," released in 2006, further solidifying their place in the annals of doom metal. Pagan Altar's impact extended beyond the studio, as evidenced by their co-headlining slot at the esteemed "Metal Brew" Festival in Mill Hill in 2008, alongside Cloven Hoof. Their presence reverberated through metal circles, with notable performances at the "British Steel IV" Festival in 2009 and headlining the "British Steel V" Festival in April 2011, followed by a captivating display at the "Live Evil" Festival later that year. In 2012, the band embarked on their next musical odyssey, crafting "Never Quite Dead" in a purpose-built recording studio nestled in the back garden of vocalist Terry Jones's home. Despite facing adversity, including the tragic loss of Terry Jones to cancer in 2015, the band pressed on, with Alan Jones later revealing plans for a partial re-recording of their upcoming album, driven by a quest for perfection. Their discography stands as a testament to their enduring legacy within the metal realm, featuring a plethora of albums, EPs, singles, and demos. The band played during the fourth edition of the Malta Doom Metal Festival held at Buskett Roadhouse (since then renamed to Chateau Buskett) between the 4th and 5th November 2011. Also, on the bill were Forsaken fronted by the mighty Leo Stivala. This was not the first time both bands shared the same bill (as can be heard during the interview Alan Jones, Leo and Glen Gauci did building up to this event and which can be listened here) and a strong friendship grew between them, in fact it was around this time that Terry affectionately nicknamed Leo ‘The Human Dynamo’. Locally he is known as a devoted aficionado of classic traditional heavy metal and pure epic heavy doom. He emerged as a prominent figure in the music scene, in the latter half of the 1980s, when fueled by his passion, he embarked on a journey into the realm of music, initially picking up the guitar and founding a short-lived band named North Winds. Despite its brief existence, this endeavor laid the foundation for Leo's musical aspirations. Subsequently, Leo ventured into bass guitar duties with another band, drawing inspiration from the likes of Mercyful Fate and King Diamond, under the provisional name Nightfall. Regrettably, this endeavor too was short-lived, ending prematurely after a few months. In 1989, an opportunity arose when Kevin Azzopardi invited Leo to lend his vocals to his nascent band, Blind Alley. Leo embraced the chance, and as fate would have it, the collaboration proved fruitful. Over time, Blind Alley underwent transformations, culminating in the inclusion of Albert Bell on bass guitar and a change in name to Forsaken. Leo continued to helm vocal duties in Forsaken, also contributing musically and lyrically to the band's repertoire. As the years unfolded, Forsaken flourished, both in their musical prowess and in Leo's development as a frontman, honing his skills through studio recordings and live performances both locally and internationally. In 2006, Leo's journey took an intriguing turn when he was recruited by the Greek Epic Metal outfit Reflection to assume vocal responsibilities. Leo's inaugural performance with Reflection, supporting the legendary Solitude Aeturnus, marked a triumphant beginning. His tenure with Reflection saw him grace stages across Greece and beyond, including contributing vocals to Reflection's acclaimed third album, "When Shadows Fall," released by Cruz del Sur Records in 2008. Though Leo bid farewell to Reflection in 2012, his dedication to music persisted. He continued his vocal endeavors with Forsaken, while also lending his talents to various other projects. Leo's collaborations extended globally, as he contributed vocals to releases by bands such as Lucid Dreaming (Germany), Martyrium (Malta), Arkham Witch (UK), Vestal Claret (USA), Monasterium (Poland), Void Moon (Sweden), Draugul (Sweden) and The Cross (Brazil). Presently, Leo's sonic odyssey continues with Anchorite, a new Epic Doom venture he co-founded with Void Moon bassist Peter Svensson. The band debuted with their album "Further From Eternity," released on GMR Records in November 2020. As they forge ahead, Leo and Anchorite are already crafting new material for their eagerly anticipated follow-up release, poised to captivate audiences with their distinctive blend of epic doom metal. The night in focus owed its existence to the unwavering commitment of Iron Horde Promotions, spearheaded by the dynamic duo, husband and wife Glen and Chiara Grima. Both stalwarts emerged from the illustrious production history of the Malta Doom Metal Festival, contributing significantly to its success over the years. With the festival on hiatus since 2019, Glen and Chiara pivoted to establish Iron Horde Promotions, channeling their expertise to orchestrate events that have left an indelible imprint on the metal landscape of the island. Glen had been contemplating Pagan Altar's return for a while before sharing his vision with Alan Jones. However, with Brendan unavailable, Alan promptly proposed Leo Stivala as the vocalist for the occasion. Interestingly, this wasn't the first instance of Alan considering Leo for the role, but previous commitments had prevented Leo from fulfilling this dream. Leo took approximately 30 seconds to process the request and of course accept. Although this meant that Leo had to learn at least thirteen songs it did not deter his determination and his commitment was shown on the night with a majestic performance only Leo can give. The band arrived on the island a few days before and thanks to Leo’s other band Speed Pony’s offer for a rehearsal space, the band managed to do two rehearsals, one on Thursday another on Friday, both in the evening although Leo has done a considerable number of rehearsals on his own during the previous weeks. Both bands completed their sound checks early in the afternoon. When questioned about his thoughts between the sound check and the concert, Leo confessed, "I felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety. Not only am I a dedicated fan of Pagan Altar, but they are also my friends, and I didn't want to disappoint them. My mind was entirely focused on the upcoming performance. Once we hit the stage and played the first note, everything exploded with energy, and we had an incredible time performing." The doors opened at 8:30 on the night, with the first band taking the stage approximately thirty minutes later. Atomic Flame, a heavy metal ensemble born in 2022 amidst the aftermath of other bands and the upheaval of the CoVid-19 pandemic, comprises four members: Lawrence Baldacchino, Nigel Buttigieg, Charles Buttigieg, and Marco Mule. In 2021, Lawrence Baldacchino, a seasoned drummer, and Campos Gellel, a skilled guitarist, convened with the aim of forming a heavy metal band, drawing from their previous experiences in groups like Fire and 12th Ode for Lawrence, and Angelcrypt and Blind Saviour for Campos. The disbandment of Noogie's Crew in October 2021 provided an opportunity for Lawrence to approach Nigel "Noogie" Buttigieg, who accepted the invitation. However, with the lineup still incomplete, the quest for a bassist began, leading to Charles Buttigieg joining the band in December 2021. Charles brought along his lyrical prowess, complementing the band's musical concepts, and shaping them into cohesive songs. In July 2022, Campos Gellel departed from the band, prompting a renaming to Atomic Flame. The vacancy was swiftly filled by Marco Mule, hailing from Sicily, and boasting experience with bands such as Ricercados. On January 21st, 2023, Atomic Flame made their debut at The Garage in Zebbug, unveiling their debut single 'Innocence Becomes Prey' in May, followed by 'Hunter' in December of the same year. The performance of "Time Lord" served as a heartfelt homage to the brilliance of Terry Jones, both in his lyrical mastery and musical compositions. Delving into the setlist, one readily recognizes this tribute, yet it's imperative not to overlook Alan's significant contribution to the creation of these songs, making it equally a tribute to his musical talent. The band delivered a stellar performance, with Andy Green's energetic drumming, complemented by Diccon and Denis maintaining the rhythm to accentuate Alan Jones's splendid guitar work, all in support of the charismatic 'Human Dynamo'. For those unacquainted with Leo, he embodies one of those rare vocalists who transcend the ordinary to become a mythical figure onstage, captivating audiences with both his voice and performance. The sole drawback of the show was its inevitable conclusion, supposedly marked by the band's rendition of the epic 'The Black Mass' as the final song on the setlist. However, the crowd's enthusiasm persisted, prompting the band to oblige with an additional performance of 'Pagan Altar', the song they opened the night with. Despite the music coming to a halt, the night remained vibrant as the band took the time to interact and converse with music enthusiasts who had gathered for this memorable occasion, including some who had traveled from abroad, a fact that was acknowledged during the performance. Returning to the significance of this event, it stands out as a historic moment. Rarely do bands with an established lead vocalist make a one-time appearance with another singer. Such occurrences are few and far between, with one notable example being Black Sabbath, fronted by Judas Priest's Rob Halford, stepping in for Ronnie James Dio for two nights in November 1992, when Dio declined to open a show for Ozzy Osbourne. Following the event, reflections from those involved began to surface. Alan Jones shared his thoughts, expressing, "Malta, for me, this was quite an experience, more than just another show. Although my dad is always with us on stage for all our shows, the Time Lord performances are about remembering him and keeping his memory alive." He continued, praising Leo's performance, stating, "Leo did a fantastic job remembering the lyrics to the songs and delivered them excellently, as I knew he would. It's like learning three or four sets of lyrics for one song, and I truly commend all the effort that went into that." Leo expressed, "I've been preparing for this moment for months, and I'm still overwhelmed by the outcome. What an incredible weekend it was. A heartfelt thank you to the audience for their unwavering support throughout our performance. I'm at a loss for words seeing people travel from abroad to attend the event. I'm grateful to both the Maltese attendees and those from abroad for recognizing the true greatness of Pagan Altar." In a poignant conclusion, Leo addressed Terry Jones, saying, "Terry Jones, my dear friend, I'm certain you would have enjoyed last Saturday's show. Every note I sang was in your honor. Though deeply missed, your memory lives on through this magical and mythical band. The Human Dynamo salutes you!" A week later, the excitement about that remarkable evening persisted among many, and as Leo mentioned, the event was impeccably organized from every angle. Even the band members themselves affirmed this. Perhaps a larger audience would have been appreciated, given Pagan Altar's merit. Nevertheless, it was a superb performance, and he cherished every moment on stage.

  • New Forces update / Tact's new tune / Muzika Muzika 2024 / "Intimate Żfin"

Malta joins the Wacken Metal Battle As mentioned briefly in the first part of the New Forces article, which was posted on Tuesday 18th, and with the second part following on Wednesday, it was announced just a few hours before the doors opened that the winners would represent Malta at the Wacken Metal Battle as well apart from Metaldays New Forces. This unexpected news has taken many by surprise, including us at melodija.eu, so an update is appropriate. The Wacken Metal Battle, initiated in 2004, is a global band competition aimed at uncovering fresh talent and bolstering the metal scene worldwide. The inaugural victors were the German Thrash Metal ensemble Reckless Tide. This event offers a platform for up-and-coming artists on an international scale, providing both resources and stages for their advancement. Since its inception, the Metal Battle has expanded to encompass over 60 countries, each hosting national heats to determine representatives for the Wacken finals. A panel of international judges evaluates performances, with winning groups receiving financial backing from the Wacken Foundation, as well as instruments and equipment from Metal Battle's partners. Moreover, participants gain valuable networking opportunities within the global music industry. Over the years, the competition has propelled numerous bands to prominence, including Drone, Torture Squad, Battle Beast, and Hammercult, among others. This year, Malta joined the ranks, with Morsrot earning their ticket to Wacken 2025. "Catharsis" new single from Tact Since its formation in November 2009 by bandleader Franco Tartaglia, Tact (Tartaglia's Act) has been crafting music that resonates with every mood and season. Their style, rooted in introspective music, blends influence from Classical, Jazz, Rock, and Soundtrack genres. Initially driven by Tartaglia's compositions, Tact's sound evolves through collaborative efforts, with each band member adding their own creative touch. The lineup includes Charles Cassar on bass guitars, Paul Torpiano on piano and vocals, and Carl Matthew Camilleri on drums and percussion. Tact's journey has been marked by milestones, including the release of their debut album "Brushworks" in 2015 and a music video for the track "All Is True" in 2017. In 2019, they recorded three compositions at the Church of St Ubaldeska, which were released as music videos. The band has also showcased their talent through various performances and collaborations, including supporting acts and multimedia projects. In 2023, Tact recorded tracks at Temple Studios, with the first release "Catharsis" accompanied by a video in March 2024 and can be viewed here. When dance and song collide! Alexandra Alden and her band recently collaborated with Żfin Malta for the celebrated production "Intimate Żfin", featured in Maltabiennale.art 2024, held at the National Archaeology Museum in Valletta. "Intimate Żfin" marks the convergence of music and dance in unconventional, intimate settings. This unique collaboration at the museum saw artists and dancers perform amidst an engaged audience, redefining traditional notions of choreography and dance within the museum's space. Similar to their collaboration two years prior at Palazzo Parisio, Alexandra Alden and her band, including members from the Netherlands, delivered excerpts from her albums. The performance was complemented by choreography from Paolo Mangiola, the artistic director of Żfin Malta. Exploring the theme of home and private spaces, the production delved into collective and individual satisfaction, as well as the resilience required to navigate life's challenges. Alden's renditions from her albums "Wild Honey" (2018) and "Leads to Love" (2021), along with previews from her forthcoming album, formed the musical backdrop for "Intimate Żfin." The audience was treated to a captivating series of dances, where choreography, music, and the museum's iconic architecture engaged in a dynamic dialogue, captivating all in attendance. Maxine Pace wins Muzika Muzika with "Mhux tal-Aħħar," The winning song at this year's "Mużika Mużika" Festival drew inspiration from the loss of two mothers, Maxine Pace’s , and the mother of songwriter Emil Calleja Bayliss, who collaborated with composer Cyprian Cassar on the song. Titled "Mhux tal-Aħħar", the song resonated deeply with both the jury and the public, earning 106 points through their combined votes. Maxine, reflecting on the song's emotional depth, expressed how it connected with her own experiences, making it a perfect fit for her. This marked Maxine's debut in the festival, where she made history by performing entirely in Maltese. Second place was awarded to the group with the song "Vjaġġ Sabiħ," earning 90 points, while third place went to Cliff Zammit Stevens with "Fil-Qrib," securing 83 votes. The tension during the announcement of results was palpable, with participants anxiously awaiting the outcome in the Green Room, positioned in front of the stage for the first time. Maxine recalled the intense week of preparations and rehearsals leading up to the event, filled with excitement and nerves. Despite the nerves, Maxine described the festival as prestigious, with an atmosphere that kept everyone on edge. After the event, Maxine chose to watch the recorded show with her family, free from the stress of the previous day's competition. Maxine, aged 24, discovered her passion for singing at a young age. She honed her skills by participating in various singing competitions locally and internationally. At just 13, Maxine began collaborating with artists, composers, and writers, crafting music that gained recognition on Maltese radio. She also joined her Italian band for appearances on shows like Una Stella Sta Nascendo and Io Canto on Canale 5. The first ever edition of New Forces Malta by Metaldays was held over the second weekend of March at The Garage, with twelve bands playing their hearts out for a chance to play at this prestigious European festival. Day 2 was set off by a blend of Death Doom and Experimental Progressive Metal from the most veteran band to play over the weekend. Oblique Visions were formed in 1991, and after releasing a much-acclaimed demo, ‘The Fallen’ four years later (and a collector’s item today) they released an opus in Malta’s metal scene ‘Seas Of Serenity’ in 1995. A follow-up to "Seas of Serenity" was being written prior to the band's hiatus till Oblique were revived in 2006 with a string of live performances. Circa 2020, original members Brian 'Fusa' Sammut, Conrad "Twister" Attard and Jeffrey Bugeja were joined by Frank Pizzo on guitar and ex Sceptocrypt and ex Martyrium singer Conrad Borg, with their first appearance on stage being during Sanguis Noctem on the 18th December 2021. Since then, the band released their second full length album ‘Out Of Darkness’ in February 2023. Saturday’s set was mainly composed of songs from this release except for the track the band opened their set with ‘Deranged’ (from ‘Seas Of Serenity’) and ‘Darkness Has Fallen’, one of the new songs the band are working on for their next album and which was unleased to the public the first time during Peccatorum last September. One could not ask for a better start for the day, especially when the second band for the evening was Damaged & Co. offering their blend of Metalcore and Alternative Metal. Starting off their set with their first single from 2018 ‘Here To Stay’ the band changed their attention to music from their debut full length album ‘Life's Grand Delusion’ which was released around a year ago in February 2023. Their excellent performance came to an end with two of my favourite tracks off the album: ‘Carpe Diem’ and ‘Reflections’. After a quick change over, to which one must compliment all those involved as stagehands throughout all the festival for their timekeeping, it was time to get doomier, and sludgier with Lady Lizard who gave us one of the slowest and heaviest sets over the two days. With a set comprising of four tracks which have not yet been released officially except for ‘Bloat Drone’ (released 8th January 2024) they astounded all those present. The other three songs making up their set and which I for one am looking forward to seeing them released were: ‘Far Too Long’, ‘Solitary Planet’ and ‘Statues Of Bone’. Rankin is a band that just showed up on the scene out of nowhere with an immediate impact. They released their debut album ‘Chrysalis’ in 2022 (April if not mistaken) only in digital format and started tiptoeing their way into the local live scene only to become one the favourite bands to watch perform. Probably the British humour and banter of their main singer James Byrne is one of the main factors that the band became a people’s favourite but it surely doesn’t reduce any merit the guys around him deserve. They opened Saturday’s show with a new song ‘Rage’ which James promised it shall be on their second album to be recorded later on this year and continued with three more tracks from their debut. As if it wasn’t already burdensome on Micheal Berberian to judge the bands so far, things were going to get much more heavier with the two remaining bands. First up was Repugnance, who ultimately finished runners up to Morsrot. Their first two songs for the night were taken from ‘Shrouds Of Deceit’, the band’s debut full length album released in 2019, before playing a new song titled ’A Fading Breed’, then back again to another song from the album before ending their set with ‘Priest Of Impurity’ taken from the band’s first EP ‘Seeds Of Opression’ released in 2014. Without diminishing the musical accomplishment of the band, personally, this was the best ever I heard the band, probably since their induction in 2011 and all this merit to the amazing capabilities of Steve Lombardo on sound, which he managed to define exceptionally to the listener, not an easy job in Brutal Death Metal. One thought that kept lingering in my mind after each band was “they’re going to be tough to follow” only to be proven wrong time and time again. All the bands performed exceptionally and the last band for Saturday did just that as well. Haine were formed in 2017 making an immediate impact on the metal scene with their Deathcore grooves. I consider them one of the tightest band on the island and it’s always a pleasure to see them perform, and I believe this was not just my opinion especially when the mosh pit in front of them was as wild as ever. Their set commenced by ‘This Darkness’ which is a non-album single from 2018 and continued with four songs from their debut self-titled EP released in 2021. A mammoth of an act to close the night and the festival, but all good things must come to an end. It was one hell of a weekend, one which many hope there’ll be a repeat soon. The organization was impeccable, and sound was immaculate, but one must also thank Philip and Jim for taking care of the lights and backline. They are rarely shown the gratitude they deserve. On a closing note: I would like to congratulate all the participating bands, all were outstanding making this weekend an exciting one to all those who attended from early hours and stayed till the last band, on each night, said their goodbyes. A massive congratulations goes out to Morsrot: “We’re all proud of you and we know you’ll be making us proud in Slovenia and Germany in 2025”. Of course, one must not forget the organization of Nick Grima MGT and all those who in one way or another were there to make sure the festival is a successful one – thank you. This was the first edition and it surely won’t be the last!

  • New Forces Malta: Inaugural Showcase Recap - Day One

The first ever edition of New Forces Malta by Metaldays was held over the second weekend of March at The Garage, with twelve bands playing their hearts out for a chance to play at this prestigious European festival. Unfortunately, on the 29TH January it was announced by the festival organisers, that MetalDays will not be held in 2024, and instead shifted their focus to MetalDays 2025, scheduled to take place from July 27th to August 2nd, 2025. Altghough this was bad news, the organization for the local New Forces event Nick Grima MGT ascertained that the winner shall in fact play in Metaldays 2025. Not only that but, literally a hours before the doors opened on Friday, Nick announced that the victorious band shall also travel to Germany for the Metal Battle at Wacken Open Air, making it the first Maltese band to ever play in this huge festival. The winners, Morsrot, were announced on Sunday 10th at 7pm during an after-party held at Kickstart. Runners-up Repugnance will replace Morsrot should they not be able to make it to any of the festivals. Voting for all twelve bands was done via three processes: the online poll during the days building up to the festival, in which Morsrot edged past Luciferi Regnum to take the lead, ballot voting on each day of the festival where each attendee was given a chance to vote once for any of the six bands playing on the day, and the judges’ votes. The judges panel was originally made up of Gunnar Sauermann from Prophecy Productions and Metal Hammer, Micheal Berberian (Season of Mist an independent record label and record distributor with subsidiaries in France and the United States, founded in 1996 by Michael in Marseille, France), Thomas Strater from Testimony Records and Metal Hammer and Roman Hilser from Summer Breeze Festival. Unfortunately, due to an airline strike in Germany only Micheal Berberian was able to arrive and attend making his task more arduous and exhausting at times. Doors opened at 6pm on Friday 8th March with the first band taking the stage 30 minutes later. The bands slots and times of playing were defined on the 21st January during an event meeting between the oganisers and members from the bands participating. A member from each band was asked to pull a ticket from a hat uncovering the date, time and slot his band will play in during the event. First out of the hat were Mur.doc 104 and they were the first band on stage on Friday. To be honest I was a bit sceptic that there would be anyone in front of them at that ungodly hour, and minutes before the doors open, I could only count a score of metaheads waiting for the door shutters to go up. But anyone thinking the same as myself were proven wrong once the time arrived for Mur.doc 104 to start their 30 minutes set. There are of course pros and cons of playing a short set, and it is burden on the band to choose the songs to put on their set list. I have to say before we endeavor into more details about the bands’ performances, the songs each band choose for their allocated time did not seem to be much of a bother as all sets were solid. But back to Mur.doc 104, their set comprised of six songs with a mix of tunes from their debut EP ‘The Undying’ which was released independently last year on the 3rd March. Apart from the title track, they included ‘Ignorant Masses’ and the eponymous ‘Mur.doc 104’. The other three tracks are songs which should be on their next release (hopefully to see daylight soon). These are, ‘Condemned To Rot’ which the band opened the evening with, followed by ‘Thrashgauge’ and ‘Curtain Falls’. Before hitting the stage, I could see that I was not the only one troubled with attendance, any worries were crushed with the first couple of notes and Mur.doc 104 delivered a strong thrash metal set awing the audience in front of them. Next up was the band who eventually won the right to play at Metaldays and Wacken, Morsrot. The band was formed in 2021 amidst a dark time on the world and their debut show arrived a few months later during the first festival after covid, Metal City Rock City which took place between the 15th and 20th March 2022. Since then, the band not only matured musically but managed to build a good following of young metalheads most of them fresh out of school, just as the band members were. A demo titled ‘Carnal Enslavement’ quickly followed and was released on 7th July 2022. Since then, the band played numerous live gigs many times introducing new songs the band developed with the aim of a debut album very soon. Their setlist on Friday comprised of nine songs, two of which were taken from their 2022 demo. The set also featured their recently released singles, ‘Masochist’ which got the crowd singing along to it and ‘Sloth’. One thing that this festival offered was the diversity in styles and the third band that played on Friday is a witness to this, as it was time for Align The Tide. Fresh from their gig in London last February, sharing the stage with Suicide Silence and Glower and the introduction of a new singer a few weeks earlier, the band returned to the local stage with a grit and determination to show that the band is still strong, and their blend of heavy fast thrash chords mixed outstandingly with the band’s trade of metalcore did just that. ATT delighted us with six songs, three from each album, the 2017 debut ‘Dead Religion’ and ‘Hollow’ released in 2022. Nowadays the band boasts two prime guitarists since James Horton joined in 2023. Next on the bill was, what I believe were the outsiders for both nights, but Krishna managed to deliver a haunting piece of music, rendering their show one of my favourites for the night. As in their tradition whenever they have a short slot, they played just one song entitled ‘Abaddon’, through which both Tim and Alan played as if there was no tomorrow. As always this was a unique version as although the band might play it again sometime it would definitely be a different rendition of the song, as it can be heard on previous songs on their multiple live recordings the band has online. ‘Abaddon’ is the second new song the band put forward since the album Headless was released on March 24, 2023, although ‘Despondent’ was released a few days prior to the album launch. The band’s next stop is Bucharest where the band shall be performing for the first time abroad at the Soundart Festival. With four bands over and only two bands left one would think it was getting late (for the Maltese scene) and people will start getting tired, but it was certainly not the case on Friday. The next act was one of the two veteran artists taking part. SaHHar has been around since 2006, releasing his debut full length album ‘Magija Sewda’ a year later. Since then, there were 18 releases. Recently he also released a couple of singles online and is working on his new full length, hopefully to be released soon. Anyone who has never seen SaHHar live might raise some eyebrows when you see him walking out on stage all alone with his guitar, but right from the first note (usually after an intro) one knows he is in for a show from the man. Starting his set with a song from 2007, ‘Nar Li Jsaffi’ he soon took all present on a journey through the years covering some of the most important work he produced during his 18-year career. Last band for the night, was more or less on the same wave as SaHHar but more melodic. Luciferi Regnum is another band that popped up right after covid and in a few months took the scene by storm. Their blend of Gothic metal with melodic Black together with the stage antics of their frontwoman Lilith Macabre, who was also unveiled as the new Martyrium singer in December, bestow a unique ambiance congregating a following from all genres and ages. Their set was made up of 5 songs including Banshee – the band’s first single released in November 2022. The band is currently working on their debut release. And that was the end of Day 1, which shall definitely be immortalized as one of the best days any metalhead experienced at The Garage and got everyone eager for the next day. Melodija.eu footnote: New Forces Malta: Inaugural Showcase Recap - Day Two shall feature tomorrow at 6pm
