- Enzo Gusman: A Lifetime of Maltese Music and Broadcasting Excellence
Enzo Gusman, also known as Laurence Gusman, was a celebrated Maltese singer-songwriter and broadcaster, born on 9 August 1947 in Sliema, Malta. His career, spanning several decades, saw him achieve both national and international acclaim, particularly during the 1970s when he represented Malta in various song contests and festivals around the world. He passed away on 18 December 2021 at the age of 74. Gusman's talent was first discovered by the late comic actor Johnnie Navarro, who invited him to perform as a resident singer on the programme "TIC TAC" transmitted on the now-defunct Malta's Cable Radio system run by Rediffusion. He started his career at the young age of 13, singing as the lead vocalist with the all-Maltese band "The Boys" in the early 1960s. By 1968, he represented Malta in the Olympiade De La Chanson in Athens, Greece, where his romantic ballad performance was met with immediate success. Throughout his career, Gusman participated in numerous prestigious international song festivals, including the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, Japan; Festival Internacional De la Canción in Viña del Mar, Chile; Olympiad De La Chanson in Athens, Greece; Alexandria International Song Festival in Alexandria, Egypt; Castlebar International Song Festival in Castlebar, Ireland; Cavan International Song Festival in Cavan, Ireland; Istanbul International Song Festival in Istanbul, Turkey; Festival Menschen und Meer in Rostock, East Germany; and Festival Golden Orpheus in Slantchev Bryag, Bulgaria. His major achievement was winning the coveted ‘First Prize’ at the Golden Orpheus Festival in Bulgaria. He was also voted Best Foreign Artist at the Cavan International Song Festival in Ireland and declared Best Interpreter at the Istanbul International Song Festival in Turkey. Gusman wrote and composed many of his own songs, which remain popular in Malta and among the Maltese diaspora. He won the Malta Song Festival multiple times, with notable victories in 1974 with "Paċi fid-Dinja" (Peace on Earth) and in 1976 with "Sing Your Song Country Boy." Despite these successes, Malta withdrew from the Eurovision Song Contest on both occasions before he could perform internationally. He competed unsuccessfully in the Malta Song for Europe a further seven times but found success in over 20 international song festivals. In addition to his singing career, Gusman was a well-known radio and television personality. He began broadcasting with Rediffusion in 1969, presenting The Italian Hit Parade weekly, and later hosted the popular radio show "Bejn il-Ħbieb" (Between Friends). He emigrated to Canada in December 1979, continuing his banking career while also being a regular broadcaster on CHIN Radio Toronto. Returning to Malta in 1991, he resumed his work as a singer and broadcaster, performing in various entertainment venues and continuing his beloved radio show on different stations, including Xandir Malta, Bay Radio, PBS, Radio 101, Calypso Radio, and Radju Malta. Enzo Gusman was also an avid campaigner for blood donation, writing the song "Agħtini Pinta Oħra" (Give Another Pint) to promote the cause. He was passionate about the Maltese language and heritage, urging fellow broadcasters to uphold high standards of spoken Maltese on air. Additionally, he performed in local dramas and musicals, further cementing his status as a versatile entertainer. Enzo Gusman was awarded the Midalja Għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika in 2008 for his contributions to entertainment and broadcasting. In September 2021, he was honored with Gieħ l-Għanja during the year's edition of L-Għanja tal-Poplu. Gusman was married to another popular Maltese singer, Carmen Schembri, and they had two daughters, Johanna and Greta. He was a grandfather of four and managed to spend time with his family in Canada every January and during the summer months. Many tributes poured in after his passing, with friends and colleagues remembering him as a great artist and a person who truly loved his motherland. His legacy lives on through his music and the indelible mark he left on the Maltese cultural landscape.
- Historic D’Amato Records Sign Destroyed, Mużika Mod Ieħor Goes Radio, and KorMalta Seeks Singers, Weeping Silence update
Historic Shop Sign at D’Amato Records Destroyed by Construction Crew The iconic HMV sign at D’Amato Records, reputed as the world's oldest record shop located on St John’s Street in Valletta, was smashed overnight between the 3rd and 4th July. Co-owner Anthony D’Amato has attributed the damage to a nearby construction crew. Installed shortly after World War II, this historic sign has been a significant landmark, often cited as the most photographed in Valletta. The destruction occurred due to a crane used by construction workers across the street. The damaged sign, made of perspex, is feared to be irreplaceable. Despite the setback, the contractor, Antain Borg, clarified that the damage was caused by a subcontracted company’s concrete pump. Borg assured that a police report was filed and plans are underway to open an insurance claim to cover repair costs. D’Amato Records, established in 1885, boasts a resilient history, having operated throughout the wartime bombings of Malta. The recent incident is not the only loss of historical artifacts in Valletta; last month, a British-era telephone box was demolished by a delivery truck. The responsible company promptly took accountability, and the Culture Ministry has pledged its restoration. The community now hopes for similar prompt action to restore the beloved HMV sign, preserving a piece of the island’s cultural heritage. Mużika Mod Ieħor Ma' Toni Sant Expands to Radio Broadcast Toni Sant’s long-running podcast, "Mużika Mod Ieħor ma’ Toni Sant," is set to begin broadcasting on Campus 103.7 in Malta, marking a significant new phase for the show. This transition will start today, 4 July 2024. Sant has been producing radio shows on Campus 103.7 since October 2020. After a hiatus of more than 20 years, Sant returned to regular radio broadcasting during the second COVID-19 lockdown and has been on the air weekly since then. His first series, "Vjaġġi Enċiklopediċi," featured interviews with Wikipedians from Malta and other countries, as well as weekly meditations on Wikipedia articles. Following this, Sant produced the research-intensive series "Noti Memorabbli," which aimed to highlight the need for more historiographic sources for the performing arts in Malta. Each 60-minute episode required about 20 hours of research, making it unsustainable beyond one season. In the summer of 2021, Campus FM, as it was then known, broadcast an audiobook version of the award-winning book "Jien-Noti-Jien," co-authored by Sant and Immanuel Mifsud. In October 2021, Sant launched "Mużika 21," offering an hour each week dedicated to the latest releases from the local music scene, exploring oddities, and focusing on albums released in the 21st century. Both "Mużika 21" and "Mużika Mod Ieħor" featured similar playlists, with the podcast including videos for each track and the radio show focusing more on album tracks and oddities. As Sant took on more writing and art curation projects, the weekly podcast was reduced to a monthly offering. This led to the natural progression of bringing "Mużika Mod Ieħor" to the radio while continuing the podcast as an ongoing series. The podcast, which has evolved since its inception in November 2005, will now be broadcast on Campus 103.7. Sant hopes "Mużika Mod Ieħor ma’ Toni Sant" will continue to delight listeners worldwide, documenting the local music scene uniquely. Although the local broadcasting sector has improved in playing more Maltese music, Sant dreams of a time when local musicians no longer struggle for airplay. "Mużika Mod Ieħor ma’ Toni Sant" will be available on Campus 103.7 on Thursdays at 6 pm and 11 am, as well as Saturdays at 2 pm. The episodes are in Maltese, although some featured songs are not. more on Mużika Mod Ieħor ma’ Toni Sant and Toni Sant can be read here: Mużika Mod Ieħor: A Chronicle of Maltese Music and Digital Innovation Artwork: The Maltese Rock Band of the Mid-1980s more information can be found on https://www.tonisant.com/ KorMalta Seeks New Vocal Ensemble Members KorMalta, Malta's National Choir, is currently inviting applications for new vocal ensemble members. Weeping Silence Band Update: Some Bad News from the Rhythm Section Back in January, just three weeks after the launch of their 'Isles of Lore' album, Weeping Silence’s drummer Julian Mallia was diagnosed with a knee ligament injury following an unfortunate jogging incident. While the injury is not life-threatening, it has significantly impacted Julian’s ability to perform the intense, double-bass-drum-heavy drumming required by Weeping Silence’s songs. Despite being able to walk, drive, and maintain basic drum practice, Julian has had to take a step back from his full band duties. Earlier this year, as it became clear that the healing process would be lengthy, Julian made the difficult decision to step back temporarily to allow the band to find a replacement drummer. Julian has been making steady progress through physiotherapy sessions. Although the future remains uncertain, there is hope that he will be back on track in a few months if all goes well. In the meantime, Weeping Silence is actively working on new material and is in the process of searching for a replacement drummer who can take over the drumming duties during Julian’s recovery. The band will continue to provide updates on this developing situation. They wish their hardworking bandmate a speedy recovery and, in the meantime, have shared a compilation of Julian’s finest recorded drumming moments from the past few years with Weeping Silence and other music projects.
- Malta's Cultural Calendar Heats Up: Highlights from My Fair Lsdy, Mascarade Opera, MPO, Police Force, Gozo Youth, and Jazz Festival 2024
Berlin-Based Maltese Label My Fair Lsdy Releases Nostalgic Compilation 'Mother Sun' Berlin-based label My Fair Lsdy, founded by Luke Scerri (a.k.a Fake Ophelia) and Belgian Verta Hermov, has launched "Mother Sun," a mix of Maltese songs from the late 1960s and '70s. The compilation includes tracks from The Malta Bums, Vanni Pule & Mary Anne, The Pirates, The Jaywalkers, The Lost Sound, and more. The idea for "Mother Sun" emerged from a desire to create a centralized collection of Maltese pop songs from this era, which were previously scattered across various online and physical archives. Scerri and Hermov meticulously compiled this two-part collection to celebrate the dawn of Maltese pop music. Since the project is non-profit, they decided to release the music as a mix, offering listeners a seamless experience without the need to select individual songs. The duo focused on preserving the original spirit of the recordings, as many well-known tunes from that time were re-recorded in recent decades, losing their authentic essence. The mix also features rare tracks, including an untitled piece by Cinnamon Hades, possibly the first heavy band in Malta's pop scene. Notably, many of these songs are absent from modern streaming platforms, highlighting the significance of this compilation. Scerri emphasizes the importance of remembering and celebrating the artists who paved the way for future musicians, blending western influences with local Mediterranean flavors. The second volume of "Mother Sun" will be released on July 17. Fans can also look forward to Fake Ophelia’s second solo album, "Till I Can Gain Control Again," set to release with My Fair Lsdy in the coming months. Baritone Charles Buttigieg Joins Prestigious Mascarade Opera Programme In an exciting announcement on his Facebook page, baritone Charles Buttigieg shared that he will begin his journey as a Mascarade Artist this September. The Fondazione Mascarade Opera, an independent non-profit organization, offers a year-round programme designed for exceptionally talented young opera singers and répétiteurs. This programme incorporates the latest research in voice science and performance psychology to nurture emerging talent. Buttigieg expressed his gratitude for the experiences that have led him to this remarkable opportunity. He looks forward to starting this journey alongside other talented artists. Over the next two years, Buttigieg will be based in Florence, performing professionally in opera houses across Europe. In his heartfelt message, Buttigieg extended his thanks to everyone who has supported him throughout his career. He celebrated this success with his supporters in mind and heart, acknowledging their role in his achievements. - Joe Mizzi's Return to Roots: "Psychotic Tranquillity" Revisited!
Two years ago, the Fehl-Ritzhausen based Maltese singer Joe Mizzi made a triumphant return to the music scene with his fifth solo album, "Psychotic Tranquillity," released on July 1st. This album marks Mizzi's first original work since "Angels Fall" in 2010, signaling a significant comeback for the seasoned musician. Reflecting on the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mizzi shared his journey in a press release at the time. "The COVID years have not been kind to musicians all over the world," he remarked. "Live entertainment was literally banned for almost two years. Many musicians faced the dilemma of either giving up their profession and making a living through other means or facing the prospect of being inactive for a long time. I decided that no matter what, I was not giving up." During the pandemic-induced lockdowns, Mizzi, who had been working as a vocal coach and participating in various tribute projects, found himself with ample time to dedicate to his own music. This unexpected hiatus from live performances spurred a creative resurgence. "The last 10 years, I have been working as a vocal coach and singer in different Tribute Projects, without spending much time writing my own material. When the whole world locked down because of the pandemic, I found myself with a lot of time on my hands, which I spent mostly in my home studio. This is where the song ideas started sprouting again and after writing the first one, I was overloaded with new ones." The resulting album, "Psychotic Tranquillity," encapsulates the dichotomy of tranquility and chaos that characterized Mizzi's lockdown experience. "The album title describes the feeling I had being in lockdown and not being able to perform live. The strange tranquility of deserted streets, closed shops, empty bars, cafes. Just sitting in a room staring out of a window with a thousand thoughts and doubts shooting through your mind, not knowing what the future holds or whether things will ever be the same again. A psychotic unreal silence. And this is what got me to start writing again." "Psychotic Tranquillity" features ten tracks carefully selected from about fifteen initial compositions, each reflecting Mizzi's bluesy hard rock roots with a modern, hand-made touch. The album cover, showcasing Mizzi's unfiltered face, emphasizes the authenticity he aimed to bring to his music. "It's all about the music. The lyrics are about everyday things that influence people's lives, like greed, corrupt politics, social media, conspiracy theories, but also about personal things like depression and suicide with one or two more lighthearted themes." The album also includes notable collaborations, most prominently with Maltese guitarist Wayne Camilleri, whose prog style and versatility added a unique layer to the music. "I had followed Wayne Camilleri from Malta and kept contact on Facebook and I really wanted to work with a Maltese musician. I love his prog style and I think he's one of the most talented guitar players currently in Malta. His soloing on tracks like 'Poor Man's Hero,' 'Great Plan,' 'Rain or Shine,' and 'Skylight' is simply excellent." Guido Pyka, a long-time friend and collaborator of Mizzi, also contributed with a solo on "All or Nothing," enhancing the album's rich musical tapestry. The tracklist of "Psychotic Tranquillity" includes: Hands on the Wheel - A hard-rocking opener about regaining control of one's life. Bitch - A narrative of a broken soul from a bad relationship, featuring mysterious, spacey verses. Great Plan - A critique of greed and power in politics, highlighted by a solo from Wayne Camilleri. Rebel - A song about breaking free from misunderstanding and societal expectations. Skylight - Dominated by Wayne Camilleri's guitar work, inspired by a dream Mizzi had. All or Nothing - Discussing conspiracy theories and social media, with a bluesy solo by Guido Pyka. Rain or Shine - A ballad dedicated to Mizzi's wife, showcasing acoustic and solo guitar by Wayne Camilleri. Poor Man's Hero - A tribute to Mizzi's son, featuring another stellar solo from Wayne Camilleri. When You Call - A haunting exploration of self-reflection and inner turmoil. Can't Wait - The closing track, addressing depression and the contemplation of suicide, inspired by Chris Cornell. Joe Mizzi's "Psychotic Tranquillity" is available on all streaming platforms, presenting a heartfelt and authentic rock album born from a period of profound introspection and creativity.
- Malta mourns Vinnie Vella Sr. (1928 – 2024) - a leading musician, band leader and entertainer
melodija.eu wishes to pay it’s respect to the memory of Vinnie Vella Sr. who passed away on Tuesday, 26 June 2024, aged 96. Vincent was born in Valletta on 28 January 1928. From a young age he studied music on his own initiative and at a later stage received tuition from Fr. Vincent Caruana, Maestro Casapinta, famous clarinettist Wigi Bonnici, the American Guies Wilson and Maestro Carmelo Pace. Through a correspondence course he graduated and received a diploma, under the guide-ship of Leslie Evans. From a young age Vinnie excelled as a clarinettist and in 1947 he was invited to play clarinet solo at Villa Bellini in Catania, Sicily. A year later he formed Vinny’s Blue Jackets, a twelve-piece orchestra, together with his brothers Sunny (who passed away in 1979) on drums and Dominic on bass. His orchestra became a mainstay at the main entertainment hotspots between the 1950’s and the 1980’s, performing every Sunday at the Phoenicia Ballroom and other venues such as Cafe Premier, Strait Street and Chalet in Sliema, amongst others. Vinny’s Blue Jackets performed alongside foreign artists including Albano Carrisi, Bobby Solo, Wilma De Angelis and many more. In 1956, whilst travelling abroad with Xercarm (a renowned sax tenor who performed in Vinnie’s band) they met Billy Haley, who encouraged Vinny to introduce Rock ‘n Roll music to Malta. His musical career, in Malta and abroad, extended well into the 1990’s. In 1955 he married Josephine and they have three children, Antoinette, Carmen and Vinnie Jr., who followed in his father’s footsteps becoming a renowned pianist and forming his own band. Sincere condolences to the Vella family for the loss of Vinnie Vella Sr. one of Malta’s leading musicians, band leader and entertainer. Musical Based on Trevor Zahra's Book to be Staged This Month Sempreviva is set to premiere at the Msida Bastion Historical Gardens this month, brought to life by The Kettle Club. Founded in 2019, The Kettle Club aims to make musical theatre accessible to all and serve as a hub for new ideas in the genre. The club's latest production, Sempreviva l-Musical, marks a significant milestone as their first original show. The director, who has extensive experience in both performing and directing, takes on the dual role of producer-director for this fully-fledged musical. She has embraced a collaborative approach, developing the story and lyrics with the performers, and has found the experience deeply rewarding. Performed in Maltese, Sempreviva l-Musical is inspired by a book of short stories by the celebrated novelist Trevor Zahra, who received the National Book Prize Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature in 2020. The director was eager to produce an original musical in Maltese and chose Zahra’s Sempreviva, a collection of short stories that explore the role of flowers in Maltese culture. This choice reflects a patriotic desire to celebrate local flora and educate audiences about the beauty of Malta’s countryside. The book contains over 50 short stories, but only a select few could be included in the musical. After careful selection, four stories were woven into a central narrative based on the story "L-Anġlu tad-dlamijiet," which explores the beauty in both life and death. The musical’s title, Sempreviva, is inspired by a flower that lives forever, symbolizing the theme of eternal life. A recurring motif in the script poses the question, “X’tiswa fjura li ma tmut qatt?” (What is the worth of a flower that lives forever?). The production encourages audiences to embrace the present, moving beyond past regrets. Clint Chircop stars as Orren, the main protagonist, making his musical theatre debut. He is supported by seasoned performers Karl Bartolo, Charlotte Formosa, Sean Borg, and Lara Agius, who portray multiple characters, including Orren’s deceased wife Cara, the love of his life; gossipy family members Bianca and Albert; and Riza, a girl who reminds Orren of Cara and gives him a renewed sense of purpose. The show also features personified flowers such as a daisy, rose, and sempreviva, who help narrate the story. - Artwork: The Maltese Rock Band of the Mid-1980s
Toni Sant, known for his influential podcast series Mużika Mod Ieħor and his significant contributions to Maltese culture, was also a member of the mid-1980s rock band Artwork. This popular Maltese band, active from 1985, was a prominent feature in the local music scene and even had the opportunity to open for international acts such as Nazareth and play on the same stage in Frankfurt with X-tend in a festival headlined by Wet Wet Wet. Formation and Early Days Artwork emerged from the Rokarja AST community in Tigne, a hub for budding musicians. The original lineup included drummer Ferdinand Grima (known as Grimly Ferry), bassist Michael Harrison, keyboardist Mark Attard, singer Toni Sant, and guitarist Twanny Mifsud iċ-Ċimbillai (known as Tony Chamberlaine). This initial formation played at various local venues, gaining a reputation for their energetic performances and unique sound. Within a few months of their formation, significant changes occurred. The band parted ways with the Rokarja AST scene, and Toni Sant transitioned from vocalist to guitarist, replacing Mifsud. This shift marked a new phase for Artwork, setting the stage for their subsequent success. Music and Releases In 1986, Artwork released a double A-sided 45 rpm single, "Girls Will Be Girls/It's All Over Now." This release captured the essence of their musical style, blending rock influences with distinct melodic elements. The single gained traction and helped solidify their presence in the Maltese rock music landscape. Over the four years of their activity, Artwork saw several changes in their lineup. Notable members who joined the band included Manoel Pirotta and Paul Borg. Despite these changes, the core of the band, anchored by Grimly Ferry and Michael Harrison, remained consistent, ensuring a stable and evolving sound. Performances and Legacy Artwork's live performances were a significant aspect of their appeal. They opened for renowned international acts, providing them with broader exposure and a chance to showcase their talent to diverse audiences. Notably, they opened for Nazareth in Malta and Wet Wet Wet in Frankfurt, experiences that highlighted their capability to hold their own alongside established bands. Despite their relatively short existence, Artwork left an indelible mark on the Maltese music scene of the mid-1980s. Their music, performances, and the dynamic changes within the band contributed to their lasting legacy. Toni Sant's Continued Influence While Toni Sant's tenure with Artwork was a significant chapter in his musical journey, his contributions to Maltese culture extend far beyond. His role in Mużika Mod Ieħor, along with his work in academia and digital media, demonstrates a lifelong commitment to promoting and preserving Maltese music and arts. Sant's experience with Artwork undoubtedly influenced his later endeavors, providing him with a foundation in the collaborative and creative processes essential to music production and broadcasting. Artwork remains a memorable part of Malta's rock history, remembered for their dynamic music, evolving lineup, and significant performances. The band's journey, marked by collaboration and transformation, reflects the vibrant and diverse nature of the Maltese music scene during the 1980s. Through the legacy of Artwork and the ongoing work of individuals like Toni Sant, the rich tapestry of Maltese music continues to thrive and inspire.
- Earth Garden 2024 Closes with the Triumphant Return of Xtruppaw
Sunday, June 9th marked the closing of this year’s edition of Earth Garden, a festival that surely needs no introduction. Since its inception in 2007, Earth Garden has stealthily gained a reputation as one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, basking in the radiant allure of the sun-soaked island of Malta. Garnering recognition as one of the top 20 festivals in Europe on two occasions, Earth Garden stands as a testament to its unparalleled charm and magnetic appeal. But the day will remain special for the return on stage, after five years, of one of Malta’s iconic bands, ‘Xtruppaw’. The rumours that this might happen started during last year’s edition of Rock The South, but none of the band members or any of the organisers from both festivals ever confirmed any of the rumours until announcing them earlier this year. Although they were not billed as the headliner (Kula Shaker headlined Sunday), the news caused a furore amongst music lovers from all genres. Of course, putting on a show after years of hibernation is no small feat. Once this was confirmed, the band started planning, but rehearsals came first. This was not as easy as one might think, with two members of the band living abroad, Rex in Saudi Arabia and Jeffrey in Spain. The time when the individual members started practicing varied, but they began a few months earlier. The members in Malta started rehearsing one month and a half months before Earth Garden. Rex joined them three weeks before the concert. As for "full band rehearsals," all the members were in Malta two weeks before the gig, rehearsing almost every day. Rehearsals with the session musicians were conducted separately. Although the buzz that Xtruppaw was playing live again had been stirred months before, the festival grounds had a certain atmosphere since early Sunday afternoon. The build-up for Xtruppaw actually, commenced a few days before when a hilarious advert popped up on Facebook. Most of the metalheads were spotted mostly at the Music Playground, where some of the best jams took place during the four days of the festival. They made their way towards the Roots Stage, where preparations were underway by a numerous group of hazmat suit-covered stagehands, plus the band members in incognito, hurrying to set up the stage. Once done, it was time for the show. Of course, an explanation of why Xtruppaw were not seen around was necessary, and a small docu-film was presented on the big screen on stage. In short, the narrator asked about the band members, ultimately showing that they had been cryogenically frozen for five years. A lab assistant searching for a wall socket to charge his Nokia 3310 accidentally unplugged the one giving power to the cryogen units, thus five thawing guys were assisted on stage with a ‘Sci-Fi Opening Theme Song’ in the background, prompting the band into one of their most famous songs, ‘Diska Cool Għar-Radio’. We asked the band whose idea was the intro and choreography during the concert. They replied, “We wanted to come up with a funny concept of why Xtruppaw 'vanished.' During group chats and calls that we made regularly for the preparation of the concert, we came up with various ideas, but the idea that we were cryogenically frozen stuck the most. Then we started trying to come up with ideas of how we could present ourselves during the concert. Jeffrey had the idea to make it a form of a television program. But the other pieces, such as the mobile phone and someone cutting the light of the tanks where we were frozen, etc., which together created the opening of the concert, came from brainstorming and collective ideas from all members of the band.” From the first notes of the first song, it was clear that this was not going to be just another Xtruppaw gig. Maybe the long wait to see them perform again, maybe the alcohol, or the heat of that afternoon, but the energy shown by the crowd was amazing, and I have not witnessed it for a long time at any concert on the island. The crowd (probably in thousands) danced, crowd surfed, jumped, cheered, and sang every lyric with every song the band performed on stage. The setlist was as follows: Diska Cool Għar-Radio, Ħabbtu ma’ Rizza, Min Ħexa Mexa, L-Avventuri Meraviljużi ta’ Żaren Elvis Ciappara u Ħrejjef Simili, Rajt ma Rajtx, Frutsalad, El Cupa Hangue, Dear Poni, (Ewro) Viżjoni ta’ Mħabba, Hot Rock, Ġibtha B’Idejja, Dlam Cappa u Riħa ta’ Ħara, Għanja ta’ l-iXtruppaw, Il-Puberta’, Pudina, Iċ-Ċawl Iċul, Glorja Tonna, Għana, Malta, Innu Marċ (Viva l-Kbir San Ċipress), Ġenerazzjoni ta’ Meqrudin: basically the best from their releases: ‘Is-CD Ta' L-iXtruppaw’ (2006) and ‘Xtruppozitorju’ (2013). We again asked the band, “Surely you expected the people in front of you, but did you expect how you were welcomed?” to which they replied, “Although people's comments in the weeks and days before the concert were very positive, we were not expecting the crowd participation and buzz to be so great. Of course, we are very honoured, and we greatly appreciate the support we have had.” Unfortunately, the time allocated for the band ran out, and they had to vacate the stage for Kula Shaker. They surely were a hard act to follow. Everybody was left with the same impressions after that ecstatic show, and not even one from the crowd was disillusioned. The band gave their best, and the crowd reacted to both the show and the music, making it an evening to remember. Hopefully, the show was recorded for the future. It would be nice for the fans to have a memento of the night, maybe on DVD or just a CD (double probably) to remember the evening when Xtruppaw returned from the depths of the cryogenic abyss. As mentioned before, two members work and live abroad, thus making it very difficult for us to get another performance soon, hence a memento of the gig would be very appropriate.
- Malta's Cultural Highlights: Exciting New Music Releases and Spectacular Events
Zabbeth and Vaulderie Set to Release Split Album In an exciting development for metal fans, Zabbeth will be returning with a new split album featuring American band Vaulderie. This collaboration promises to deliver a powerful and darkly atmospheric experience, drawing heavily on the influences of iconic metal bands like Bathory, Sabbat, and Venom. Hailing from Tacoma, Washington, Vaulderie is a formidable presence in the metal scene. The band comprises of Archfiend Vukodlak on bass and vocals, Nostenebris on drums, and guitarists Draconoth and Khamazotz. Their debut, self-produced EP, "Fiends of the Night," written in 2022, marked their entry into the metal world with a bang. Initially a three-piece, Vaulderie's first performance took place at the legendary Central Saloon in Seattle, where they played alongside Kömmand in support of Ares Kingdom. Following this, Khamazotz joined the band, and they began recording as a four-piece, self-releasing the EP in December 2022. Three months later, they signed with Witches Brew for an official release. Vaulderie's sound is deeply influenced by the legendary Bathory, as well as Sabbat and Venom. Their live performances have seen them share the stage with notable acts such as The Accüsed A.D., Spiter, Desolus, Mortiferum, Physique, Funeral Chant, and Aberration. In 2023, their band shirt even made a cameo in the Skeletal Remains music video for "Relentless Appetite," underscoring their growing influence in the metal community. This latest release came about when Cheryl from Witches Brew approached Zabbeth about a split album with Vaulderie. Zabbeth enthusiastically agreed, and the collaboration began. Both bands drew inspiration from Bathory's early works, with Zabbeth focusing on unreleased demos recorded before Bathory's yellow goat album, while Vaulderie added their own vampiric twist to the classic sound. Vaulderie recorded their tracks at The Blood Shed in Tacoma, Washington, and sent them to Chaos (Zabbeth) for mixing and mastering at Subterranea Studios. The album’s artwork was a collaborative effort between Chaos and Vukodlak, brought to life by Shaun Farrugia, guitarist of Rankin and Mur.Doc 104. For this recording, Chaos recruited Zain Gauci, from Halcyon, Pilgrimage, Saint Vermin and Horned Majesty on drums. The split album is set to be released on CD and 10” Vinyl formats, with editions available in Black and White splatter, Translucent Red, and Black. The release dates are scheduled for June 24th and July 24th, respectively. Singles from each band, “Iblis” and “Necrobeast,” are currently streaming on all major platforms, and preorders are available from Witches Brew’s webshop on Bandcamp. About Witches Brew Founded in 2002 by Cheryl, Witches Brew has its roots deeply embedded in the underground metal scene. Inspired by her husband’s label, Barbarian Wrath, Cheryl launched Witches Brew to focus on Thrash and Death Metal. The label’s name was inspired by Manilla Road's "Open The Gates," and since its inception, Witches Brew has been dedicated to helping underground bands achieve greater recognition and professionally produced CDs. 13 Years Later Releases Poignant New Single "John Doe" In a heartfelt return to the music scene, the band 13 Years Later has unveiled their latest single, "John Doe." This release holds profound significance for the band, encapsulating a journey marked by personal struggles and a powerful message of hope. A year ago, Jeanelle, the band's front-woman, and her family faced a series of deeply challenging events. During this period of turmoil, band members Gianni and Dru found themselves in the garage, devoid of any plans or even the desire to play. However, amidst this raw and unplanned session, a unique piece of music began to take shape, driven by the intensity of their emotions. When Jeanelle heard the nascent tune, it resonated deeply with her, and the band collectively felt compelled to develop it further. Over the past year, they poured their hearts into refining this song, dedicating it to those battling mental health issues. "John Doe" serves as a tribute to individuals navigating their darkest moments, a reminder that even in the most challenging times, there is always a flicker of light ahead. The song is a powerful message of courage and hope, meant to resonate with and support those in need. 13 Years Later invites everyone to join them in spreading this important message. Together, they aim to shine a light on mental health, offering support and solidarity to those who need it most. - Mużika Mod Ieħor: A Chronicle of Maltese Music and Digital Innovation
Since its inception on Saturday, November 19, 2005, Mużika Mod Ieħor (MMI) has carved out a unique niche in the digital landscape, serving as a vibrant showcase for music by performers in or from Malta. Created by the multifaceted Toni Sant, this podcast series stands as a testament to Malta's rich musical tapestry and the evolving realm of digital media. Each weekly episode typically features a diverse selection of four or five tracks, introducing listeners to a broad spectrum of Maltese musical talent. Occasionally, special editions deviate from this format, either focusing on fewer tracks or exploring specific themes in depth. Such variety has kept the series fresh and engaging, continually drawing in audiences with its eclectic offerings. The Evolution of a Digital Pioneer In the early days of the series, Toni Sant coined the term poddata (plural: poddati), establishing the Maltese lexicon for podcasts. This term has since become integral to the local dialogue about digital media. Initially, the podcast featured the voice of American comedian George Carlin, who humorously critiqued people's musical tastes and radio airplay in the era of MP3 players and file sharing. This was temporarily replaced by Robert J. Safuto's Pop Culture Rant #43 from Podcast NYC. By the end of its first year, in November 2006, Mużika Mod Ieħor adopted its current introduction style, which has since seen occasional variations in special editions. A significant milestone occurred with MMI0070, released on June 9, 2007, marking the podcast's transition to the Internet Archive from the MaltaMedia Online Network. This move ensured better long-term preservation of the mp3 files and a more reliable download experience for listeners. This decision proved crucial when a hard drive failure resulted in the loss of working files for podcasts MMI0051 to MMI0159, with only the Internet Archive backups preserving these episodes. By its 100th edition on February 2, 2008, Mużika Mod Ieħor had already garnered substantial acclaim, even being featured in an article by Michael Bugeja in the Sunday Times of Malta. Expanding Horizons Between October 2009 and November 2010, the podcast series enjoyed sponsorship from Vodafone, further bolstering its presence. Another significant development occurred on August 7, 2013, when the podcasts began streaming on Mixcloud, starting from the very first edition. This move enhanced accessibility and broadened the listener base. On March 26, 2016, MMI0444 introduced regular video editions published on YouTube, making Mużika Mod Ieħor the world's first regular video podcast in Maltese. The video format was later adopted by MVTV for its IPTV transmissions, including it in their regular schedule until the channel's phase-out three years later. In October 2020, the audio editions became available on Spotify, although they were taken down 13 months later due to restrictive rights management policies. Today, the podcast is accessible via its Facebook page and Toni Sant's official website. Toni Sant: The Visionary Behind the Podcast Toni Sant, a Maltese award-winning writer, broadcaster, and academic based in the UK, is the driving force behind Mużika Mod Ieħor. He serves as an Associate Professor and Director of the Digital Curation Lab at MediaCityUK with the University of Salford and is the former Artistic Director of Spazju Kreattiv, Malta’s national center for creativity in Valletta. Sant's broadcasting career began in the 1980s with Radio Malta, where he produced music and drama content. He later transitioned to television, hosting popular music and entertainment shows on TVM. In 1994, he moved to the USA for postgraduate studies, earning an MA from the Tisch School of Arts and a PhD in Performance Studies at New York University. He also formed part of 80’s rock bands Time, Ateatru, Structure and Artwork. Despite relocating, Sant continued his broadcasting efforts, eventually founding the MaltaMedia Online Network in the late 1990s, which produced pioneering Maltese-language multimedia content. This endeavor laid the groundwork for Mużika Mod Ieħor, his flagship production since 2005. Contributions and Legacy Beyond Mużika Mod Ieħor, Sant has significantly contributed to Maltese culture and digital media. In 2010, he co-founded the Malta Music Memory Project (M3P), a collaborative database of Maltese music and associated arts. His work with Wikimedia UK and as a founding member of Wikimedia Community Malta has promoted open knowledge resources both locally and globally. Sant's accolades include a Career Recognition Award at the 2020 Malta Music Awards. His academic and literary contributions are extensive, including several published books and articles in peer-reviewed journals and the popular press. Mużika Mod Ieħor continues to be a vital platform for Maltese music, reflecting Toni Sant's enduring commitment to cultural preservation and innovation in digital media.
- Press Release - Manatapu
Manatapu and online attacks "Manatapu is committed to creating exceptional music and delivering unforgettable shows across Malta, Europe, and the world. Last week while celebrating a fantastic performance at one of our favourite Maltese festivals, Earth Garden, we were informed by the organizers that all their social media channels were down, potentially for reasons connected to our band. Upon investigation, we discovered that this disruption was caused by Jogy Bo Smid, a former member who was officially dismissed from the band in 2019 due to misconduct, violence, theft and misappropriation of band funds. Since his departure, Jogy Bo Smid has engaged in a series of malicious actions aimed at sabotaging our online presence on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Spotify. He is fully aware that Manatapu holds a pre-existing trademark in Malta, and holds rights under Maltese and European law to use the name Manatapu for our music distribution and live performances. Despite this knowledge, he continues to file unfounded and bad faith content takedown requests to undermine our presence. We want to make it clear that Jogy Bo Smid's attempts to register multiple trademarks under the name "Manatapu" are invalid and in bad faith - aimed only at causing disruption, by abusing of the trademark registration system. Our original and Malta-registered trademark holds precedence, and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has confirmed this and ruled against his claims on classes and services related to music, particularly with the trademark number 018093527, which he frequently references. His actions appear to be driven by an intent to mislead and damage our band's reputation and commercial interests. After failing to impact us directly, he has now targeted our trusted partners, including some of Malta’s largest festivals and most prominent organizers in the local music industry. This escalation to a direct attack on the Maltese music scene has prompted us to file multiple police reports. His attempts appear to be not only vindictive and maliccious, but are now also allegedly criminal in nature. We are prepared to take all necessary legal measures to prevent further damage to Manatapu and our partners. We want to reassure our fans that despite our current Facebook page being down, Manatapu remains strong. We will continue to release new music and deliver exceptional performances. Stay tuned for our upcoming shows! Thank you for your unwavering support." - Manatapu https://www.manatapu.com https://www.facebook.com/manatapu/
- 'The Collector’ Honoured, William Smith’s Mastery, Explicit’s New Drummer, & Young Prodigy Ilyas Ige Sultana.
‘The Collector’ Music Video Receives “Honorable Mention” at the Berlin Music Video Awards In a thrilling achievement for the band Weeping Silence, the music video for ‘The Collector’ from their latest album 𝗜𝗦𝗟𝗘𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗟𝗢𝗥𝗘 has been awarded an “Honorable Mention” at the prestigious Berlin Music Video Awards 2024. This captivating video draws inspiration from the Maltese folklore character “Ċensa l-Mewt” - a spectral female entity cloaked in an “ghonnella” who gathers souls at life’s end. The band’s drummer, Julian Mallia, not only directed but also conceptualized and storyboarded this visually arresting narrative. His creative vision was brought to life with the expertise of seasoned video creator Cedric Vella (Ched Rick), who managed the filming, editing, and visual effects. This collaborative effort also featured the talent of veteran Maltese actors Mikhail Basmadjian as the male protagonist and Sandra Davis embodying Death (Ċensa l-Mewt). The stunning makeup was crafted by Violet Vella. Despite being produced on a shoestring budget, ‘The Collector’ was a labor of love, with all band members and collaborators maximizing the limited resources at their disposal. The recognition at the Berlin Music Video Awards is a modest yet significant validation from impartial judges who acknowledged the value of this intensive creative endeavor. “We’re incredibly grateful for the support from our record label, ViciSolum Productions, the Ministry for the National Heritage, The Arts & Local Government, and everyone who contributed to bringing this narrative to life,” the band commented. “Despite many challenges, we’re proud to export a piece of Maltese metal and stylized folklore overseas.” For those eager to experience this artistic fusion of music and folklore, the music video and full credits can be viewed here. Additionally, behind-the-scenes photos by Ġużè Camilleri offer a glimpse into the making of this remarkable project. William Smith Earns Master of Music in Jazz Drums from Manhattan School of Music William Smith, has recently graduated with a Master of Music degree in jazz drums from the renowned Manhattan School of Music in New York. During his studies, Smith had the privilege of learning from esteemed musicians and educators such as Kendrick Scott, John Riley, Buster Williams, Marc Cary, and Christopher Rosenberg. Throughout his time at the Manhattan School of Music, Smith showcased his skills in various high-profile performances. Notably, he played at Dizzy’s Club with the MSM Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Darcy James Argue, sharing the stage with acclaimed trumpet player Ingrid Jensen and saxophonist Melissa Aldana. Smith also performed alongside emerging talents in the New York jazz scene, including the exceptional trombonist Marty Scott. Smith's graduate recital was a significant milestone, featuring mostly new original compositions as well as pieces from his debut album, "Nomad," and a work by his musical idol, Thelonious Monk. His recital ensemble included Joey Curreri on trumpet, Conway Campbell Jr. on bass, and David Van Der Grinten on piano. Released in July 2022, Smith's debut album "Nomad" is a collection of six original compositions crafted during his bachelor’s degree studies in jazz drums in the Netherlands from 2017 to 2021. The album serves as an auditory journal, capturing the experiences of a young man from a Mediterranean island navigating his journey abroad to pursue his musical aspirations. "Nomad" reflects Smith's feelings of loneliness, self-doubt, and homesickness, as well as his opportunities for personal and artistic growth. Smith’s decision to produce "Nomad" was influenced by the positive reception of his compositions during his final recital at the HKU Conservatory in Utrecht. Encouraged by his tutors' praise, he decided to turn these pieces into a recorded album. The album features performances by three musicians and friends he met in the Netherlands: Prashant Samlal on electric guitar, Murat Ali Cengiz on piano, and Jonathan Ho Chin Kiat on double bass. Ongoing Rehearsal Space Saga in Birkirkara: Aidan Somers Provides Update Amidst the ongoing saga surrounding the availability of rehearsal spaces in Birkirkara, Aidan Somers has provided an update via his social media pages, shedding light on the efforts being made to resolve this pressing issue. Somers stated, “We have been in discussion with government representatives and have put forward a proposal in aid of supporting this issue of creative spaces. We are not at liberty to discuss who specifically at this stage, though we are hopeful after having several meetings this week from both the public and private sectors.” The statement emphasizes the importance of community involvement in driving change. Somers urged, “As a community, we need to keep pushing in order to make our voices heard and address the current situation. Engage Organizations: Encourage organizations interested in joining a creative hub to participate. Submit Testimonials: Send a 1-minute video testimonial explaining your need for creative space. Offer Skills: Contribute creative skills to the campaign to aid in spreading the message. Donate: Support the fundraiser through the provided Indiegogo link: Indiegogo Fundraiser. - Rokarja AST: The Heartbeat of Malta's Rock Revolution
In the early 1980s, a cultural renaissance began on the Tigne' promontory in Sliema, Malta, with the formation of Rokarja AST. This organization, spearheaded by Philip Pace, aimed to encourage, and support various cultural initiatives, most prominently establishing a vibrant music commune in the former British Army barracks. These barracks, with their thick, historical walls, soon resonated with the sounds of rock, punk, and metal, becoming a haven for musicians and fans alike. Fort Tigné, located at Tigné Point in Sliema, Malta, is a polygonal fort constructed by the Order of Saint John between 1793 and 1795 to defend the entrance to Marsamxett Harbour. As one of the oldest polygonal forts worldwide, it underwent significant modifications by the British in the 19th century and continued to serve military purposes until 1979. Rokarja AST's journey began with the transformation of the ex-ammunition depot in the fort into a rehearsal space. The first band to occupy this space was the punk outfit Abstrass, followed swiftly by the hard rock band Acid. These initial occupants set the tone for the diverse musical experimentation that would define the community. The bands forming part of the AST community were given numerous opportunities to perform live. The former St. Luke's Chapel, situated on the edge of the barracks, was renamed Ċentru Ħin Ħieles (Free Time Centre). This venue, along with other spaces within the barracks, including a stretch of land large enough for outdoor concerts overlooking Marsamxett Harbour, became central to the AST experience. The chapel and the outdoor concert area hosted a variety of events, from intimate performances to large gatherings, drawing crowds who came to experience the energetic and eclectic music scene. The AST community played a vital role in the Maltese music scene, spawning numerous bands that would go on to become staples of the local music landscape. Some of the bands that were part of Rokarja AST at various points include 43 Ltd, Abstrass, Access, Acid, Artwork, Asgard, Atlam, B3, Blind Distress, Chi-2, Dance The Ghost, Davy Jones Band, Export, Fluid, General Lee, Gone Bonkers, Hangover, Kraken, Man and White, Members Only, Overdose, Passion Blade, Prinz Eugene, Red Led, Resumb, Rough Trade, Sphinx, Shaktonyx, Something In Ash, Structure, Subverts, Talisman, The Faith, The Joy Circuit, The Ophidian Twin, The Rifffs, Valdacry and Witchcraft. The community orchestrated a series of unforgettable events that have achieved legendary status among attendees. Among the most notable were three concerts: the performance by Subverts and Hangover on Friday, 18 March 1983; the show featuring Overdose and Acid on Saturday, 28 May 1983; and the triple bill with Davy Jones, Tony Grimaud, and Atlam at Tigne Chapel on Saturday, 9 July 1983. Tigné also hosted one of the most attended gigs on the island during Maltafest on August 9 and 10, 1985. Headlined by Nazareth, the festival featured performances by Acid, Prinz Eugen, Fluid, Witchcraft, Spectres, Structure, and Subverts. In 1986 Gloria Gaynor attracted the same amount when she headlined that year’s edition. The decline of the association began when rehearsal spaces were frequently broken into and equipment was stolen or set on fire, leading some bands to seek more secure locations. This disruption caused some bands to split up or go on hiatus, which may have also contributed to the downturn of the rock and metal music scene experienced in the late 90s. During the early 2000s, the area underwent redevelopment that transformed it beyond recognition, becoming yet another casualty of modernization and so-called 'progress.' Decades after its inception, Rokarja AST's legacy was celebrated with a reunion. On Saturday, 31 March 2012, former band members, roadies, relatives, and friends gathered at the Black Pearl in Ta' Xbiex. Coordinated by Philip Pace, Mark Mallia, Joe Paris, Sonya Tanti, and Paul Spiteri, this event marked 30 years of AST. Michael Bugeja and Michelle Sullivan provided playlists throughout the evening, and 12th Ode, including some former Rokarja musicians, played a live set of classic rock covers. Following the reunion, Philip Pace and Mark Mallia were interviewed by Noel Mifsud on his One Radio show "Rock Moods" on Thursday, 12 April 2012. They revealed that a second reunion event took place on Monday, 30 April 2012, featuring the band Colourblind. During its heyday, the Tigne Barracks were more than just a collection of rehearsal spaces; they were a bustling rock village. Musicians and fans practically lived there, immersed in a mix of rock, punk, new wave, goth, metal, and alternative music. Entering the village, one could hear a symphony of different sounds and feel the powerful, positive energy. The community's concerts, both indoor at the old chapel and outdoor with the stunning backdrop of the port and open sea, were mind-blowing experiences that left a lasting impression on all who attended. Rokarja AST's influence on the Maltese music scene in the 1980s was profound and far-reaching. Its creation of a supportive and dynamic environment for musicians fostered a sense of community and artistic freedom that continues to be remembered and celebrated. Through its unique blend of historical setting and innovative spirit, Rokarja AST remains a shining example of cultural and musical collaboration.

Decline The Fall Announces Disbandment After Nearly a Decade In a heartfelt post on their social media pages, Decline The Fall has announced their decision to disband after nearly a decade of making music. The announcement, penned by band members John and Ehren, conveyed the emotional difficulty of this decision. "Time to break the silence... It's hard to put everything we're feeling into words, especially into this one post, but it's been a long time coming. There's no easy way to say this, but after a lot of thought and consideration, we've decided to put the band to rest," the post began. The band expressed that the intense effort poured into their music over the past ten years had, over the last year, begun to feel burdensome. Despite their pride in their achievements, the harsh realities of the music industry took a toll on their personal lives, prompting them to reconsider their priorities. "We feel like we were still far away from what we dreamed of achieving as the more we worked, the more we learned about the problems in the music industry and how ruthless it really is. Though we are proud of our accomplishments, we were slowly realizing that this was leaving a negative impact on our personal lives which helped us understand the need to shift our priorities," the post continued. Decline The Fall also expressed gratitude for the opportunities they had to share the stage with talented musicians, forge new friendships, and travel extensively. They thanked their supporters, stating, "We truly appreciate everyone who kept pushing and supporting us as without you, we couldn't have made it this far. We thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts and hope you understand that this was the hardest decision we've ever had to make." The band concluded with a shout-out to everyone who has been part of their journey, saying they will cherish the music and memories forever. "We hope that following us was worthwhile and that you will never forget us, as we will surely never forget you and the amazing memories you were all part of." Fans are left with a poignant farewell from John and Ehren, who signed off with "Goodbye for now." Decline The Fall's disbandment marks the end of an era for the band and their fans, leaving behind a legacy of music and cherished memories. Arts Council Malta to Provide Financial Aid to Displaced Musicians in Birkirkara In response to the recent displacement of musicians from their rehearsal spaces in Birkirkara, Arts Council Malta (ACM) has announced a comprehensive support initiative. The council confirmed that it will provide financial assistance to all affected musicians following extensive discussions with officials from the Ministry for Cultural Heritage, the Arts and Local Government (MHAL), and representatives of the displaced bands. ACM’s commitment to supporting Malta's musicians and bands is evident in its proactive approach to this crisis. The eviction from privately owned spaces in ex-Rampol, Birkirkara has disrupted rehearsal routines and imposed significant financial burdens on the musicians. Addressing these issues promptly is crucial to prevent long-term negative impacts on their careers. To alleviate immediate financial hardships, ACM will offer subsidies amounting to €1,500 for the first year, followed by an additional €600 for each of the next two years. This support package, totaling €2,700 per unit over three years, is designed to offset the increased costs associated with securing new rehearsal spaces, including rent, utilities, soundproofing, and maintenance. By reducing these financial strains, the support will enable bands to concentrate on their music, ensuring a smoother and more stable transition. ACM Executive Chairman Albert Marshall emphasized the council's swift response to the crisis, stating: “Arts Council Malta understands the importance of investing in the alternative music sector and believes that musicians in this sector should benefit from public funding schemes. Their experimentation and creativity significantly contribute to the growth of the alternative Maltese and Gozitan music scene.” The displacement has affected a substantial number of artists, with 25 bands and musicians either having received eviction notices or already vacated their spaces. The government’s decision to subsidize all affected bands is a crucial step. This financial assistance will cover the new costs for those who have found alternative spaces and ease the relocation process for those soon to be displaced. Given that bands previously paid €800-€900 per year, a €1,500 subsidy represents significant support, covering approximately two years of their original expenses. The assistance will be provided through a strategic initiative titled the Ex-Rampol, Birkirkara Bands (One-Time) Support Scheme, with two scheduled calls in June and September 2024. This support will be awarded based on eligibility, ensuring that all current space users benefit. A consultation process will also be conducted with the affected musicians in line with the principles of participatory governance outlined in Strategy 2025. An evaluation research process will follow the pilot program's release to assess its effectiveness. This initiative underscores ACM’s dedication to ensuring the longevity and sustainability of Malta’s vibrant music scene, providing much-needed stability and confidence to the displaced musicians during this challenging period.
- Malta's Musical Evolution Part 3: The legacy of a true icon, Freddie Portelli
Freddie Portelli was born on the 5th of May 1944 at St. Paul's Bay and took his education in St Paul’s Bay Primary School, and the Technical Institute(later), where Freddie got the City & Guilds of the London Institute Standard. Throughout the years, Freddie's primary occupation was as a draughtsman. Portelli's career has spanned over 40 years and began as a member and chief songwriter of the group, The Malta Bums. He toured America, Canada, and Germany with the group for 5 months, and after returning to Malta in 1966, wrote the song "Viva Malta", and later, "Mur Hallini". His recordings have been released in Australia, Canada, America, and England. Freddie was also the leader of the legendary band "Black Train" with whom he released self-penned hit records. Freddie was a national waterpolo player, involved with his hometown’s Sirens waterpolo team as well as with Neptunes and Valletta with whom he won the premier championship. He was an effective player with Malta's national team with whom he won the International Independence Tournament cup in 1964, the same year he won the premier championship with Neptunes. It was his father who encouraged him to learn the guitar, and that's where Freddie's musical journey began. He took a few lessons from Carmelo Muscat, a laid-back, happy-go-lucky genius nicknamed "Il-Kaptan." Muscat, a friend of Freddie's father from Mellieħa and a fellow music enthusiast who played the guitar and mandolin, became Freddie's first music teacher. Freddie began playing with various bands at a very young age, around 13 years old. In the early sixties he formed The Malta Bums and shared his knowledge with each member of the group. First members where two (Perronis) Mario Perrone and Paul Perrone {both passed away some years ago}, then he met Tony Camilleri, known as il-Bayzo and showed him something on bass playing and they started doing harmonies together. When Mario emigrated to Australia, he was replaced by Tony Muscat, then known as il Maduwi, who started playing rhythm guitar and at times even lead guitar. Later, Paul Perrone could not continue and was replaced by Tony Bartolo Il-Gegu, who was suggested to Freddie by his father, to play drums and that was the final lineup of the ‘originals’ known as The Malta Bums. As a singer, Freddie was initially opposed to participating in song contests of the era. However, with his band, then known simply as The Bums, they decided to enter one. Despite being the least equipped band, they made it to the finals. On the final day, after the curtain rose, one of their amps started distorting, prompting them to walk off the stage. The Boys won the festival, and the two bands celebrated together the next day. Freddie Portelli founded The Black Train in 1973 after he left The Malta Bums. The initial lineup included Freddie Portelli on lead guitar and vocals, Freddie Calleja on drums and vocals, and George Baldacchino on bass and vocals. After George moved to Australia, Joe Vella took over as the bassist. The band's name, Black Train, was chosen spontaneously when local promoter Leli Saliba urgently needed a name for publicity. The band quickly rose to prominence, consistently being voted Malta's best local band in popularity polls. The Black Train performed regularly at venues such as the Phoenicia Ballroom and Palace Hall, and they also held summer concerts across Malta and Gozo. Their hit records and rising popularity led to international invitations for concerts and TV appearances in Canada, the UK, and Italy. During their career, The Black Train released two albums and around twelve successful vinyl records. However, as their commitments increased, managing frequent gigs and appearances became challenging for Freddie Portelli, who was also still working as a draughtsman and involved in water polo, and he decided to put his career on hold. In an interview at the time, he said: “…we were singing every night beside the weekend and was preparing to get married …… so I took a few weeks off!” He found this period of respite quite pleasant as he noticed that people were beginning to pay less attention to him wherever he went. A few weeks turned into years, but music was in Freddie's veins. In 2001, he was strongly urged to make a comeback, particularly by Martin Schembri, known as Ir-Reġin, and Godwin and Mario Difesa of KTA Records. Reluctantly, Freddie began his solo comeback, performing Saturday nights at a venue in St. Paul’s Bay. The outcome exceeded all expectations, leading to the release of the double album "Ghall Dejjem," which included a new recording of the monumental "Viva Malta" and once again broke all sales records in the nation. He participated in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest three times with "Don’t Be Gone Away" (1994), "There’s a Song" (1996), and "Summer Again" (1997). All three songs were later featured on the Hospice Movement CD album released in the summer of 2015. This comeback also led him to perform abroad, with a notable concert alongside Demis Roussos, where each artist performed for an hour and fifteen minutes. Freddie continued to release numerous CD singles and albums, producing around 24 in total, including a triple album titled "Reaching Out." Over his career, he wrote approximately 400 songs. In Freddie’s words: “As long as people kept buying my releases, thus elevating my morale, I’ll keep writing and composing.” He performed internationally many times, visiting countries such as Germany, the USA, Canada, Australia, England, Italy, Greece, North Africa, and even performing on luxury ships. Freddie married Carmen (née Darmanin) on December 5, 1972, and they have two daughters. Claudette, who became a specialist in clinical psychology, recorded some songs as a little girl, including the hit single "Claudette." His other daughter, Yvette, was a presenter on television and radio before moving to Italy. “I can’t imagine what else I could have done. I’ve sold out concerts both abroad and in Malta, appeared on major international TV stations in England, the USA, Canada, Australia, and more, mainly performing live and always mentioning Malta. I’ve released many successful records and been very successful in water polo. I also achieved my wish of becoming a draughtsman and was a principal on various projects around Malta. I can’t imagine achieving more. One regret I have is missing opportunities to meet legendary people, like Elvis Presley, due to my forgetfulness.” In 2019 a smash-hit jukebox musical Il-Kbir Għadu Ġej was staged, making a return in 2022 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre with a bigger and better spectacle than the original show staged in 2019.
