Tony "Bayzo" Camilleri, born April 3, 1947, left an indelible mark on Maltese music. From his beginnings with The Malta Bums to solo ventures and international acclaim, his talent and passion continue to resonate, shaping a legacy cherished by fans worldwide. On February 1, 2018, the Maltese music scene lost one of its most iconic figures, Tony "Bayzo" Camilleri. Born on April 3, 1947, in the picturesque town of St. Paul's Bay, Bayzo's legacy extends far beyond his humble beginnings. With a career spanning over six decades, his influence on Maltese music is immeasurable, leaving an indelible mark that continues to resonate. Bayzo's journey into the world of music began in the 1960s, where he carved his path as the bass guitarist for the renowned pop group, The Malta Bums. It was during this time that his unique voice and magnetic stage presence captivated audiences both locally and abroad. One of the band's standout hits, "L-Ewwel Tfajla li Ħabbejt," penned by Alfred C. Sant and composed by Ray Agius, solidified Bayzo's reputation as a distinguished vocalist. The Malta Bums' international tour in 1966, which took them across the United States of America and Canada, showcased Bayzo's talent on a global stage. Their time in Germany resulted in the recording of the timeless anthem, "Viva Malta," a testament to Bayzo's pride in his Maltese heritage. Following Freddie Portelli's departure, Bayzo assumed the role of lead vocalist for The Malta Bums, further elevating his prominence in the music scene. Beyond his contributions to the band, Bayzo embarked on a solo career, captivating audiences with his soulful performances and distinctive style. Bayzo's involvement in various musical endeavors, including rock operas like "Dream?" and the acclaimed "Gensna," demonstrated his versatility as an artist. His portrayal of characters and his ability to convey emotion through music left a lasting impression on audiences and critics alike. Throughout his illustrious career, Bayzo represented Malta on the international stage, participating in prestigious song contests and festivals in Poland, Slovakia, and beyond. His accolades, including the coveted l-Midalja Ġieħ San Pawl il-Baħar, underscored his contributions to Maltese music and culture. Beyond his musical prowess, Bayzo was a beloved figure within the Maltese community, cherished by family, friends, and fans alike. From his early days with The Malta Bums to his solo endeavors and theatrical ventures, Bayzo's passion for music transcended borders, leaving an indelible imprint on the hearts of those who had the privilege of experiencing his talent. Though he may no longer grace the stage with his presence, Tony "Bayzo" Camilleri's spirit lives on through his music, continuing to inspire generations to come. As we bid farewell to a Maltese musical legend, let us remember Bayzo's legacy with gratitude and celebrate the enduring impact of his remarkable journey.

Aidan Somers Launches Fundraiser for Malta Arts Complex Following last week’s news about rehearsal spaces, many artists and bands voiced their opinions and justified complaints. However, a piece of news that should particularly interest any artist is Aidan Somers’ fundraising campaign to create the Malta Music & Performing Arts Complex. “We are launching this campaign to create a vibrant community of musicians and artists who will co-share facilities in artist residencies, memberships, and educational programs. Many musicians have recently been evicted from their current premises, leading to a high demand for practice spaces for creative practitioners of all forms," Somers explained. He continued, “All contributors to the project will enable us to gather the funding needed to rent an adequate space to host 20+ rooms, giving access to 60+ memberships for creative practitioners. Within two months, 40% of bands need a space ASAP, 30% by September 2024, and 30% by January 2025. Without any direct and immediate governmental support, there is a dire need for such a space, and we're actively seeking the community's help to build this project.” The funding breakdown is as follows: Rent: €150,000 (5-10 year agreement) Renovation and Furnishing: €50,000 Operational Costs (Utilities, Maintenance, Staff): €35,000 Marketing and Outreach: €15,000 “We are seeking to raise €250,000 to secure a rental space for a year, furnish it, and cover the operational costs. Transparency is key. Every euro you contribute will be meticulously allocated to ensure the maximum benefit for our creative community,” Somers stated on social media when introducing his campaign. "Waves" was the second track from Berne’s debut album "789," set for release in October 2024, following "Language," which was released in March 2024. The album is inspired by how humans interact with the planet, animals, and each other. "Waves" is a creative expression of creating change and driving collective action in a metaphorically confined space with limited resources. It presents feelings of frustration, anger, and hopelessness, while taking inspiration from the natural world. The song is accompanied by a DIY music video filmed on an iPhone by Berne in Malta. Berne explained: “'Waves' started off when a flock of birds gathered on a tree outside our kitchen window one morning - they must have been getting together about something important, much like many of us were doing. Over the course of a few months, we developed the track from a bass line and a vocal melody into what you hear today. It was recorded in our studio and at Hackney Road Studios with Mercury Prize winner and Music Producer’s Guild winner Shuta Shinoda and mastered by Music Producer’s Guild Mastering Engineer of the Year 2023 Cicely Balston.” Upcoming shows: London: Creature & Machine in London on May 30 Brighton: Linden in Brighton on June 5. “A duo addressing injustice through music and beyond.” BBC Introducing "'Language' is a firm reminder of just how awe-inspiring they can be. Their songs can take you to different moments in life and evoke a range of emotions. 'About You' was written by Kayati and recorded and produced at The Insynk Collective. Kayati explain: 'About you' was written unexpectedly and, funnily enough, inspired by an argument we had literally minutes before. At the time, one of us was learning how to play the ukulele and randomly created a sweet sound, which inspired us to write 'About You'. The playful sound brought out the lyrics based on us as sisters and how we drive each other crazy at times but wouldn't want to change a single thing about one another. ‘About you ‘is our way of saying to each other that no matter what, we will always have each other's back and as our mum always says, "There's nothing better than your family." The single is scheduled for release today May 23rd and will be available on major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Instagram Music, TikTok, Amazon Music, Pandora, Deezer, and more. Kayati is a sister singer-songwriter duo (Fatima and Mabs) with a Maltese/Arabic background that has been making music together for years and has honed its craft to create a unique blend of contemporary pop and soulful ballads. - Malta's Musical Evolution Part 1: From The Malta Bums to The Black Train
In the early 1960s, the seeds of Malta's musical revolution were sown as a young Freddie Portelli embarked on a quest to form a band. What began as a humble endeavor evolved into a remarkable journey marked by serendipitous encounters, international acclaim, and the birth of two iconic Maltese bands: The Malta Bums and The Black Train. From their origins in small gatherings to electrifying performances on German television, this is the story of how Freddie Portelli and his bands carved their names into the annals of Maltese music history. In nearly 1963, a young Freddie Portelli endeavored to assemble a band. Initially comprised of Mario Perrone, Paul Perrone, and Tony Camilleri, the lineup underwent changes due to various circumstances. Mario's relocation to Australia led to Tony Muscat, known as il-Maduwi, assuming his role on rhythm and lead guitar. Meanwhile, Paul's departure prompted Tony Bartolo Il-Gegu, recommended by Freddie's father, to take up drumming duties. Thus, the new formation of the renowned Maltese band emerged: Freddie Portelli (19), Tony Muscat (18), Tony Bartolo (17), and Tony Camilleri (Bayzo) (16). An interesting anecdote surrounds the band's name. Initially dubbed "THE BUMS" in jest due to their lack of employment, the name evolved to "MALTA BUMS" after their manager, Herr Otto Alf, coined it during their tour in Germany. This name was derived from a misinterpretation in Germany, where it was understood as "Malta’s Explosion." Their journey commenced in West Germany, traversing cities like Essen West, Dusseldorf, Duisbergwen, and Koln, where they performed live on radio and television. The band's opportunity to tour abroad materialized when a German couple, regular attendees of their rehearsals in St Paul’s Bay, offered to sponsor their trip to Germany. Herr Otto Alf facilitated the arrangements, covering expenses for a contracted 20-day tour, which extended to six months. Upon their return to Malta, they were inundated with performance requests, including a documentary feature by KOLN TV titled ‘Malta of the Malta Bums.’ Their distinct sound, characterized by musical proficiency and harmonious vocals from all four members, garnered attention. A pivotal moment arrived when they were invited to perform on Germany's esteemed TV show, following the success of their Maltese-language song "VIVA MALTA." This exposure propelled their popularity in Germany. Despite opportunities in Germany and England, conflicts arose, notably during negotiations with Apple, The Beatles' record company, over the release of their song "OLD OLIVE TREE." Disputes over copyright profits led to its cancellation. The journey of Freddie Portelli and The Malta Bums concluded in 1972 due to Freddie's burgeoning commitments. However, the band continued with new members, achieving success with hits like "L-Ewwel Tfalja Li Ħabbejt" in 1973. Eventually, The Malta Bums disbanded, with Bayzo pursuing a solo career and later forming "Bayzo u Klikka" with Anthony Bartolo (Gigu), Tony Muscat (Pempel), and Freddie Scicluna. Freddie Portelli established The Black Train in 1973. Initially, the lineup comprised Freddie Portelli on lead guitar and vocals, Freddie Calleja on drums and vocals, and George Baldacchino on bass and vocals. However, George later relocated to Australia, and Joe Vella took over as the bassist. The band's name, Black Train, originated from a spur-of-the-moment decision when a local promoter, Leli Saliba, urgently needed a name for publicity purposes. The band quickly gained prominence, consistently voted as Malta's best local band in popularity polls throughout its existence. The Black Train's regular gigs included performances at venues like the Phoenicia Ballroom and Palace Hall, supplemented by summer concerts across Malta and Gozo. They also received invitations for international performances, including concerts and TV appearances in Canada, the UK, and Italy, thanks to their hit records and popularity. During their tenure, The Black Train released two albums and approximately twelve successful vinyl records. However, as their popularity grew, so did their commitments, leading to more frequent gigs and appearances, which became challenging for Freddie Portelli to manage alongside his other endeavors, such as his profession as a draughtsman and his involvement in water polo. After twelve years, Freddie decided to take a hiatus, leading to the band's split in 1985. While Freddie Calleja briefly continued playing before retiring, Joe Vella remained active as a bassist, particularly with jazz bands like the Vinny Vella Jr. Band, until recent years. Sixteen years later, Freddie Portelli made a comeback, releasing his debut solo CD album, "Għall Dejjem," which featured old recordings he composed for both The Malta Bums and The Black Train. This album, issued by KTA Records, achieved tremendous success, undergoing multiple repressings and remaining popular to this day. "Għall Dejjem" marked the beginning of Freddie's ongoing solo career. Repercussions of Rehearsal Space Sales: A Call for Authorities' Attention After an article was published in a local newspaper on Tuesday, May 14th, concerning bands being asked to vacate their rehearsal spaces unless they purchase them, there was considerable commentary, especially from the musicians using these premises. Some of these spaces have already been sold to third parties. Melodija.eu previously addressed this issue in an article penned by Noel Mifsud titled 'Unraveling the Appreciation of Maltese Artists: A Local Perspective,' published on September 18th, 2023. While we acknowledge all media coverage regarding the matter, we believe Melodija.eu may not be in the best position to discuss this matter. Though we hold our own opinions, we strongly believe they should not be disclosed unless authorities or other relevant parties express a need for consultation. Our sympathies and support are with all artists during these challenging times in the local music scene, and we hope for prompt action from the concerned authorities! Drawn upon the obligations of daily life, adulthood experiences whilst facing the mundane and daily grind. The song is a journal entry that enhances the fact that there are moments where you feel you become only part of this existence and so you feel this is the time to really take a good look at yourself and question if this is how you want to be in this short but fast-paced life. ‘Teatime’ is a song about self-reflection & how one finds themselves navigating life and its challenges all with the introspection that comes with age. Life really happens when you are busy making other plans. Chasing Pandora welcome writer Ismael Azzopardi who has performed with them since their concept in 2006. Keith Anthony is the producer, recording engineer, writer & also vocalist on their new album. Melissa Portelli is the lead vocalist and writer. Whilst the songwriters hailing from Gozo have come a long way from their 1st release in 2006, where they had the successful single ‘Feel the Rain’ and later released the popular and timeless ‘Memories’, Chasing Pandora haven’t strayed much further from their original sound, where previously they were mentored, produced and managed by Steve Brown who also produced and managed Elton John for 20 years. - Resurrecting Sceptocrypt: An Odyssey Through Time and Sound
The initial incarnation of Sceptocrypt emerged in 1992 but took a hiatus in 1999 after putting out a demo and a rehearsal tape. Fast forward to 2022, the group's founder, Malcolm, began collaborating with various musicians, revisiting songs he penned in 2014 and exploring fresh ideas. Thus, Sceptocrypt made its return. Melodija.eu recently caught up with Malcolm for a chat about the band's revival. What inspired the formation of Sceptocrypt in 1992? In 1987, I, was turned onto metal at secondary school, and by 88 I was already avidly trying to get my hand on any obscure tape some underground figures (mostly older than me) had. This led to me starting tape trading as well as learning guitar sometime in 1989. Fast forward 1 or 2 years with some riffs under my belt, I started a band with some mates called Cruxicore, but it did not go anywhere, and only bass player Marco and I survived from that line-up. Along the way we merged into a 5-piece and changed to Sceptocrypt. How did Sceptocrypt aim to differentiate itself in the extreme metal scene of the 1990s? Vocalist Conrad & I ardently into the 90's underground scene running Rancid Soup zine & radio show, and the rest of the band listening to anything we were raving about, we were always listening to what is fresh in the scene. So in turn we tried to deliver fresh ideas of our own. Being music scholars, we pushed ourselves to deliver this with the highest form of technique we then mastered. With new members bringing in more ideas, we tried to forge an own sound, merging extreme metal (at a time where the tag was not yet penned to define bands cross-bordering death, doom, black metal and more) with other non-metal styles, yet not loosing our abrasive edge. Despite disbanding in 1999, what led to the release of your unreleased CD "!26 Hrs 72 mins...the need to differ" in 2014? When we disbanded, I moved away from Malta few years later, initially to Germany and later to England. Here I became active with a jazz-world music band EthnaMorte for about a decade, but when that went into hiatus I started Sceptocrypt again. So we released the CD only online to coincide with this rebirth. Maybe eventually we will also release it on physical CD, who knows? What prompted the revival of Sceptocrypt in 2022, leading to the release of "The Unwanted Requiem" and "The Wards Outside" in 2023 and 2024 respectively? Although Sceptocrypt initially resurfaced in 2014, as we could not complete a line-up, we all went our separate ways. But I personally cannot stay away from being musically creative, and in 2022 I finally met a drummer and bassist and got working on more songs. Although we were planning to release “The Wards Outside” first, “The Unwanted Requiem” came from out of nowhere. Basically I was called to Malta as my mom was unwell, she then passed away, and in my bitter feelings of loss, I borrowed a guitar and booked a studio, and that song was born. As I wanted to release it not far from her passing in Sept 2023, the song was released 2 months later. Eventually “The Wards Outside” was released in Feb 2024. And this is actually closer to the new direction to expect from us. Although we hold the right to surprise you howsoever. How does Sceptocrypt describe their new sound, Extreme Music Research? To quote our own manifesto from our bio - Extreme – undettered by trying different forms of experimentation, from over-the-top technical riffs to the lack of same in form of time & harmonic changes that flow seamlessly, an extremity measured in the myriad of influences recalled to shape the final aural palette. Music – in a time when visual media continually compliments the music industry, we aim to present you music that evokes you the more you close your eyes, aiding you to see colours with your ears, where colour has no limit set by your visual spectrum, and thus extreme! Research – we shall be free to research past effective music templates as we merge them with/as merchants to/for future sounds Could you kindly provide an introduction to the new band members, offering some insights into each of them? Sure, we got Dip on bass. He brings to the table a touch of jazz and funk. He also adds a lot of groove to balance my harmonic dissonance. And is a good producer for recording purposes. Then we got Andrea who brings in electronic sounds & sampling. He is into EBM & industrial, so ensures it all stays abrasive. I am currently singing, but this is more till we find a decent vocalist ready to front our avant-garde ship. I would prefer that live shows are accompanied by a vocalist completely free to engage with the audience and play with his voice, and myself completely focused on the guitar. We had a drummer, but now no more, so we are looking for one. Andrea is meanwhile setting some electronic beats to keep the flow going, but wether we introduce this live (in compliment to a drummer) or on record is still to be seen. It is good to have options, but our main aim is to find a drummer, so if anyone is London based reading this, contact us via band@sceptocrypt.com When and where will Sceptocrypt perform their first live gig in 27 years? We have been invited to play the 11th anniversary of Renaissance Alt Music Fest on 26th May 2024. This has been running yearly in London for a while now, but is the 1st time it will be open air. - Philip Vella OMM Tribute/Għanja lil Ġużi/Remembering Paul Mifsud/ Halcyon's new member!
Philip Vella's OMM: A Musical Tribute to Mothers Composer Philip Vella has recently unveiled a new track titled OMM, a heartfelt tribute to all mothers, released fittingly on Mother's Day. This piece holds particular significance for him as it honors his beloved mother Esther, who passed away on October 15, 2022, transitioning into eternity. Having been deeply ingrained in the local music scene for years, Philip Vella has garnered considerable acclaim with compositions such as X’Jimpurtani, securing second place at the L-Għanja tal-Poplu festival in 1995, and Kemm Jien Beżżul, which clinched the top spot at the same festival just three years later. Yet, OMM exudes a distinct vibe, albeit resonating closely with the stylistic essence he cherishes. This resonance is evident in his album 60+, featuring tracks like Għalfejn Tħobbni Daqshekk, Allura, Ġenna u Infern, and the deeply personal Pa, where Philip reflects on his relationship with his father. Music Video: Youtube Amber unveils the official music video for 'Għanja lil Ġużi In a whirlwind of passion and dedication, last January marked a pivotal moment in Amber's life. With the joy of new motherhood still fresh, she found herself right back in the spotlight, gracing the judge's panel for the live show of X Factor Malta. Yet, amidst the glitz and glam and the tension of the finale, she unveiled a deeply personal creation alongside her trusted collaborator, Elton Zarb: 'Għanja lil Guzi', a tender lullaby straight from the heart. Her performance was nothing short of magical, leaving an indelible mark on all who witnessed it. Soon after, the song resonated far beyond the confines of the stage, becoming a cherished anthem for parents across social media platforms. Fast forward to this weekend, Amber unveiled the official music video for 'Għanja lil Ġużi'. The response? Nothing short of spectacular. In a mere 24 hours, the video soared past 5,000 views, claiming its rightful place as the #1 trending music video on YouTube. Crafted by the team at tribe. with Olwyn Jo being the artistic director, the the music video is a story being told by visuals. Set against the backdrop of Amber's heartfelt lyrics, it features a number of real-life parents and their precious children, each frame brimming with raw emotion. And if you look closely, you might just catch a glimpse of some familiar faces and even Ġużi himself which adds an extra layer of connection to this deeply moving narrative. In this mesmerizing union of music and visuals, 'Għanja lil Guzi' transcends its status as a mere lullaby, emerging as a timeless ode to the joys and challenges of parenthood. He was widely recognized for his expertise and influence, particularly within the realms of the Record Centre, Exotique, and Music Club, where he became a fixture and a respected authority. Mifsud's impact extended beyond his roles in music venues. In 1991, he took to the airwaves to host the program "Xejn Ħlief Rock" on Radio 101, a show that left an indelible mark on listeners with its eclectic mix and deep dives into rock music. His contributions to various programs alongside notable figures like Eric Montfort and Alfie Fabri underscored his versatility and passion for sharing his musical knowledge. His expertise in popular music, especially classic rock, was unparalleled. Mifsud was a veritable font of knowledge and critical appraisal, often regarded on par with the most esteemed critics. His insights into the works of icons like Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones elevated the discourse surrounding these artists in Malta's music scene. Paul Mifsud's legacy as Malta's foremost expert on the music of Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones is undeniable. His profound impact on the local music community, through his contributions to venues, radio programs, and critical discourse, will be felt for years to come. In this time of mourning, heartfelt condolences go out to all who knew and respected Paul Mifsud. His presence will be deeply missed, but his influence will endure, leaving an indelible mark on Malta's musical landscape. - Zabbeth - press release
Zabbeth's debut rereleased on tape as an ultra-limited run via Chaos & Hell Productions To mark the one year anniversary of their highly acclaimed LP release, Zabbeth's self-titled debut album has been treated to a cassette tape re-release through Chaos & Hell Productions from Greece with a special run of only 66 copies! This time round, the album gets a new look featuring yellow cassette casing and a 5-panel gloss finished J-card printed on both sides. This 5 panel print allowed for a larger font to be used and every panel is dedicated to it's own song! Featuring 8 songs of relentless aggression sandwiched between two atmospheric instrumental intro/outro, the production was entirely taken care of by Sean "Chaos" Attard, from recording all the instruments and vocals, mixing, mastering to the artwork and layout of all pressings. Paul Formosa of Sonic Storm and Ascendor fame, played drums giving a powerfully solid performace throughout all the tracks. The mind behind this project, Sean "Chaos" Attard, stated "For those less familiar with Zabbeth, this project is pure Bathory worship, and in this specific release, Bathory's self titled release, trying to emulate that dark and evil feeling from the yellow goat album of 1984!" Zabbeth's self-titled debut was originally released in CD format on the 7th of August 2022 through Witches Brew, the renowned German underground label responsible for discovering important acts such as Toxic Holocaust, Gama Bomb, Insulter, Rapture and Deathhammer, amongst others (some of which will sound familiar as they have blessed our shores with their electrifying performances). The album was subsequently released in 2023 as a limited run of 50 cassette tapes via Rat Covenant from Germany, and later that year in LP format via Witches Brew. All formats are now available for sale from Zabbeth's Bandcamp portal alongside merchandise like T-shirts, Longsleeves and patches. - Drummers, Marriages & Other Stories!
The drummer of Divine Sinners ties the knot. The Melodija team extends heartfelt congratulations to Paul Saviour Spiteri, the drummer of Gozitan band Divine Sinners, and his longtime partner Matilde, on their marriage last Saturday, April 27th, in Xaghra, Gozo. The celebration was further enlivened by an impromptu performance from Paul Saviour, his bandmates and a couple of guest singers, much to the joy of all attendees. Additionally, it has been revealed that Divine Sinners are currently in the studio working on their forthcoming album, slated for release later this year. Valeriana: A Musical Journey from Past to Present Valeriana – The Titan’s Rock that started being written by the late Gozitan composer Joseph Vella, Maestro Vella did not manage to finish this work, as he passed away when he was about half-way through. The opera was concluded by Maestro Christopher Muscat, a former student of Maestro Vella, and will be performed or the first time at the Astra Theatre. It was intended to be his biggest ever work; unfortunately, he had only completed an abridged version up to half-way stage. The first two acts are the work of Maestro Vella, and the last two acts are my work. It is a great honour for me to continue a work by Professor Vella, and when I was preparing the orchestration, memories of his lessons came to mind. It was very emotional for me to be able to continue with this work. Christopher Muscat – Director and composer of Valeriana Valeriana is the story of Rosario, a Maltese fisherman who, after marrying a local girl, ends up on the tiny Italian island of Valeriana during World War II, an island then under the control of a fascist leader named Cirillo. This is a brand new piece in English set in 1943 on an Italian island right in the heart of World War II under Mussolini’s reign…..its historically very interesting as it resonates with the Maltese, that particular period the 40s was such a difficult time. The cast is amazing, a mixture of local and foreign artists who are just exceptional and taking it to new levels. Denise Mulholland The opera is a production of Festivals Malta, and will be presented at the Astra Theatre on 4 May, with the participation of the National Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Muscat. Chaotic Remains Welcomes Drummer Keiston Busuttil! In a recent announcement on their social network pages, Chaotic Remains eagerly introduced their newest member, drummer Keiston Busuttil. With a familiar presence in the Maltese metal scene, Keiston's arrival is met with excitement and anticipation. Demonstrating unwavering commitment to music, he has dedicated himself tirelessly in recent months. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned to the band's Facebook and Instagram pages for forthcoming updates on upcoming shows and new material. There, they'll have the opportunity to witness Keiston's talent in action firsthand. Prayer Of The Dying: New Logo and Upcoming Release Martin Ciapara, the mastermind behind the revived one-man band Prayer Of The Dying, recently unveiled the project's new logo on April 9th. Additionally, he recently announced that the upcoming release, which has been in progress since January, is nearing completion. Titled 'Falling,' the track features vocals by Simon Deguara and is both produced and mixed by Deguara himself. In 2006, Martin initiated this project and swiftly followed with his debut album, "Structures of a Dying Matter," released in April 2007. Since then, he has launched four additional full-length albums and six splits, in addition to various demos and EPs. His most recent release, "Banished from Death," came out on May 13th, 2017. Owen Leuellen Continues Momentum with Release of Latest Track 'Can't Be Stopped' Owen Leuellen, the dynamic and versatile artist, reaffirms his creative dynamics with the launch of his newest track 'Can't Be Stopped,' following the success of his recent album 'Out Of Darkness.' While 'Can't Be Stopped' may not boast the same commercial appeal as previous hits like 'Flavour' and 'Juice,' it shines a spotlight on Leuellen's unparalleled storytelling prowess and the authentic emotion woven into his delivery. Leuellen emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balance between commercial and less mainstream tracks, a strategy he believes resonates deeply with his dedicated fan base, keeping his artistry genuine and relatable. Shot during his time in Los Angeles last year, the accompanying music video adds another layer of depth to Leuellen's compelling storytelling. As Owen Leuellen continues to push creative boundaries, 'Can't Be Stopped' serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication to authentic expression and artistic integrity. - Reminiscing Dark Malta 2024
The Amazing Ms. Lia Hide An early start on Friday, 19th April 2024, at the first day of the Dark Malta Festival – 5th Anniversary, was awarded with a superb performance by Greek artist Lia Hide, accompanied by her band featuring Dennis Morfis on guitars, bassist Aki’ Base and George Rados on drums. Her virtuosity on the keyboard and the lyricism of her song writing shined through. With what seemed an effortless performance Hide transmitted her message and left the crowd waiting for more. For those not familiar, Lia Hide is an Athenian singer / songwriter, producer, music educator and performer. Her music can be described as dark, art, avant grade and a bit pop. After a prolific recording past in the Greek Electronica, with numerous releases, albums, collaborations, and compilations. She has collaborated and appeared with Tricky, KBHTA, Kovacs, Joseph van Wissem, Anneke van Giersberg, Keep Shelly, Molly Nilsson, Kadebostany, Robin Skouteris, Ida Nielsen, Lucy Woodward just to name a few. Lia Hide is constantly touring throughout Europe, USA and Canada to promote her music. To date Lia Hide has released 4 solo studio albums: “Home” [EMI-Universal, 2013], “Everyone Seems to Know Who I Am” [DontHideMe, 2017], “Tells no Fairytales” [DontHideMe, 2019 – vinyl by B-OtherSideRecords], “The Missing Fourth Guest” [Conch Town Records, 2022] a Remix album: “Fairytales Remixed” [Amour Records, 2019] and music for the Dance drama “ΓΕΝΟΚΤΟΝΙΑ” by Pavlos Kourtidis (2019) “GENOCIDE” by Idalgos Records. More information can be optioned from www.liahide.com and www.facebook.com/lia.hide How was your first experience in Malta? Did you manage to enjoy our island apart of performing at Dark Malta Festival? We absolutely loved it! We stayed at St. Paul's bay, and although at first it seemed like a ghost town, as we arrived really early on that Thursday, it didn't take long to realize that was not the case, not at all! We were also celebrating my birthday (all through the weekend..) so we made sure we wined and dined at every occasion and place (meaning pub, restaurant or our hotel room balcony!). We spent the last day in Valletta, which was beyond anything we could imagine, simply gorgeous, and Dennis had the chance to visit Mdina a little and reported how amazingly beautiful it was (I unfortunately had to stay at our merch table, but don't regret it a bit, met amazing people and made new friends, right there!) What is the first music you remember hearing whilst growing up and what where are your main influences? The very first music I heard (that I remember) was the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel and a specific album of Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis that was recorded in New York and produced by Quincy Jones, Joconda's Smile – we used to travel a lot in Europe with my family and most of the music I remember was the ones my dad chose for the road trips. Now, my main influences is a whole different chapter. There's a lot of the 90s grunge (and not only) scene in me, and I absolutely love Faith no More, Soundgarden and NIN, grew up when the Prodigy, Massive Attack and Rage Against the Machine emerged, but at the same time I've listened to a lot of Jazz, Classical, Film Music, especially Ennio Morricone, and then again, my first vinyl album I bought was Pet Shop Boys' Behavior while I adore Cindy Lauper, and not to forget : I call myself Kate Bush's daughter and Tori Amos' sister, so you understand it's all over the place! Does a classical background training help even when writing modern tunes and electronica?I can't say it does, on the contrary, a classical background may be tricky, as electronic music tends to be rather simple in structure and harmony, so I actually have to scold myself and go back again and again and edit and take out stuff, all the time. It does however help me in particular to formulate my personal musical character, so this is more or less why I choose avant pop as a genre, it seems to be embracing what I do, more accurately (check the wikipedia article on that, I love it!). My sound engineer in Athens used to say that us classically trained singers and vocal teachers are a pain in the a$s to record, as we never let go of what we've been taught, never sing freely, and I have to agree it took me some time to go back to being a punk soul as a singer! The biggest issue though, is that studying classical music you are sooner or later imposed with a burden, the notion that you continue the legacy and are obliged in a way to be as good as your predecessors, so that makes us our worse enemies, nothing is ever good enough. That is the bigger obstacle one has to overcome. How would you describe the style of the songs on your solo albums? Each album is a different story, both as a narrative in my lyrics, as well as in musical style. My first album HOME is toooo long, and far too complicated in production, but then again, that was me back then. I moved on to a more southern-nightmare, dark-folk second album with murder ballads, whereas my third album was more alternative with more aggressiveness and I started writing more social and political songs, let the guitar go distorted and used unusual song lengths and structures, which lead to the fourth album that is, to me, the most mature to date (seems natural I suppose). It's where I let go of all biases and insecurities (lockdown can do that to you) and released all my music influences and needs, so there's jazz and trip hop and post punk and progressive and spoken word and harder themes to talk about. All of them albums are concept albums, but I think I fully elaborated and expanded the fundamentals of the idea of the concept album on the Missing Fourth Guest. Tell us a bit about your musical journey between your first solo album ‘Home’ released in 2013 and ‘The Missing Fourth Guest’ (2022).I took me a while to release my second album, after a turbulent departure from EMI-Universal (that released my 1st album) and I deeply regret that. I lost way too much time, and way too much energy struggling with that bullying I suffered there, but bounced back eventually, and decided to work only with small indie labels from then on - until the label of my dreams will knock on the door (if you have any friends at Sargent House, please let them know..). The band around me stayed more or less the same, George Rados drums, has been my best friend since we were 14 years old, and I could not imagine this without him. Aki'Base bass, joined us a decade ago, just in time for the 2nd album, and this hugely effected our style, as he brought in all this amazing dark wave, melodic bass lines and post attitude, and Dennis Morfis has been by my side since my 1st album's presentation, took but a small hiatus to work on his own projects, only to be replaced by two of Greece's most amazing and prolific guitar players, the Godess of guitar that is Irene Ketikidi, and Panos Papazoglou, and now Dennis is back to stay. We decided to add a trumpet for the 4th album, the amazing Stelios Chatzikaleas, which you did not see at Dark Malta, alas, as it tends to be rather costly to fly a 5-piece bands overseas, but I promise we will have him with, next time! Apart from working with these amazing gentlemen I also took some time to study a bit more, finished another Master’s degree, this time in Songwriting, in Bath, and started writing music for the Theater and Dance Dramas, while in the meantime I took it fully upon me to be the tour and general manager of the band as no-one else could/would fill in those shoes. We started touring overseas after the 2nd album, as we realized that there is no scene for us in Greece, and if it were not for Covid, we'd have reached half a thousand shows by now, I figure, but then again, we wouldn't have written that unique 4th album – so no regrets! It's been busy, to say the least! Prior to releasing your solo albums, you collaborated frequently with other established artists. How did that help you in your career? When I was younger, I was always in bands, since really really young, like 13 years old. When my last teenage band broke up, I quit the idea of releasing music, as I had no band, and these two seemed inevitably bound together, to me. So, in a way, if it were not for all these collaborative projects, I would have probably have pursued an academic music career or be a musical theater performer (which doesn't sound that bad, come to think of it). Being in the recording industry kept me running so in a way I was always ready to embark on the 'Lia Hide' (Lia Hide is not my real name – it's a loooong Greek one (!) but I'd rather not share it) journey. I took the decision to start my 'solo' project however, when the producers I worked with wanted to do soulful music in Greek, and I hated that idea. I don't hate the idea of Greek as a language in music, I am actually about to release some myself. I do hate the idea of creating music aiming specifically and only for money and only that, like, cheesy, silly love songs. So, this is more or less the turning point, when I decided I was not in it for the money, rather, I wanted to make tomorrow better, I wanted to communicate and I wanted to meet other people and understand how the world turns. Apart from the fascinating soundscape your albums offer food for thought through the lyrics. What are the subjects covered on your songs and what message do you want to get through to your listeners? In the beginning there was love. Everyone feels safe discussing the romance and breakups and wounded heart. But to be honest, I have very few love songs and they are all about stupid ex's and their manipulative nature, so there's one subject, hurt and pain when my arm's twisted. Then there are a few songs on my family, and I need to ask them to forgive me, but have not been the most easy going and healthy of families, I have to admit, and they really messed me up. So, there's abuse, and sentimental bullying and then, my biggest fear, growing up to be a mean, old, sick in the head - woman, like my grandma. And a theme that always fascinated me, serial killers! So, there you have it, the theme of psychological disorders. There's songs about death (we lost loved ones in Covid) and there's songs about birth and children than never came. And then, there's social injustice, defending the weak and shouting out for the destruction of our planet, the capitalistic consumption of all that beautiful and healthy, just for the sick sake of profit. That's quite a range of themes, I have to say! But what I want to get through once the curtain falls and you leave our show to go home, is that it's ok if you're not ok, it's ok if you are strange, and it may be ugly and hard, but we'll make it, we just have to. The world, once again, is going through a turbulent period. Do you think that music can help by bringing people together?I honestly don't know. Music has changed into a very commercialized product more than ever. I don't know how when Tay-Tay and Queen B are flooding the information stream, other genres can survive – I feel like all others are shrunk into a niche. Yet, I realize that now, more than ever, there is a huge gap between American and European Music, and I have great faith in our culture (but not our politics) here, in Europe (90% of the American mainstream music I hear lately is really useless to me, and even worse, I've followed amazing artists that once they reach the more mainstream stats, their music quality starts to deteriorate ). It seems odd but I feel like for the first time in my life, the American market does not interest me at all. I find the Europeans more alert and thirsty for art and evolution and change, and that is optimistic – but of course, I am biased, as I have visited and performed in many showcases and festivals in Europe, post Covid, and none in the US – so I am not being very fair with them Americans, am I? Although I am a teacher and very close to the younger generation, I don't fully comprehend what young artists are doing at the moment, only in the electronica, avant-garde, experimental and jazz scenes can I follow up. Living in the Balkans, with all that Trap and Turbofolk music, you tend to lose hope, but then again there's amazing hip hop and dark wave and punk and of course Metal, and I see a huge rise of numbers in festivals and festival crowds, so maybe now, especially after the Covid lockdowns, people will be united through music, at least through live music! Any new projects in the pipeline? We are travelling to Bulgaria in the 1st of May 2024, funded by Culture Moves Europe to spend 2 weeks isolated in a house in a forest and record and create. We have sketches for 2 albums in the making, one in Greek and one in English, we will finish one of them, and in the meantime we hope we will find a new label that is more fit to what we do and who understand and love our musical identity. We love Conch Town Records and they have been treating us like royals, as all of the small indie labels we've worked with in the past, but we feel we need a big push now, so we need to find those people who understand we are magic, which kind of magic, and want the world to be charmed by our spells! Any message you may wish to impart, especially to artists struggling to make it through in the music industry?Tough question. What is there to say? Right now, as I am typing these words, I am sleepless for a week, my head's filled with ideas, and in the same time I have to work (I teach at a Conservatory, have 20+ very demanding students) to fund what we do, go through contracts and agreements and edit some videos, but will also go to a few much anticipated concerts these days (Electric Litany, Sevdaliza) in Athens. What I am trying to say is, work hard, but really hard, work as hard as you can, learn how to do more than just sing or play an instrument, be very good at your instrument, rehearse, study and listen and join other musicians, try to find the people to help you, but at the same time try not to wear yourself out, listen to new music, perform as much and as best as you can and go see other artists, be out there. And most importantly, respect others, be kind and be honest, be yourself – and take the time to figure out who you are. The audience will always tell a lie, always. Would you consider performing in Malta again if the opportunity arises?Of course I would (I already miss it.. it was WOW!) please let me know when!!!

- Feel the Magic of Orchestral Progressive Rock - press release
Chorus Urbanus Productions has announced its latest concert from the ‘Feel the Magic’ programme: ‘Feel the Magic of Orchestral Progressive Rock’. This concert will feature the première of Edward Mifsud’s concept album Raġġ, an orchestral work inspired by the progressive rock style that originated in the UK in the early 1970s, with lyrics derived from Maltese poetry from the same era, namely Oliver Friggieri, Marjanu Vella, Ġorġ Peresso, Achille Mizzi, Joe Friggieri, and Ġorġ Borg. Raġġ explores the dualities of hope and helplessness, secrecy and openness, individualism and collectivism, youth and old age, and life and death, which all fall within the work's overarching theme of light and darkness. These dichotomies are resolved in the work’s final piece, which discusses harmony and connectedness. Such themes echo the juxtaposition of “masculine” and “feminine” traits, a common characteristic of progressive rock music. The programme will also feature music by prominent progressive rock bands ELP, Yes, King Crimson, and Genesis, arranged and orchestrated by Edward Mifsud in the style of Raġġ. ‘Feel the Magic of Orchestral Progressive Rock’ will be held on Saturday 18 th May 2024 at Teatru Astra, featuring the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Dr Mro John Galea, and special guests Dorothy Bezzina and Chris Grech. - New releases by Morsrot & Tribali / Skorch unveils new member / Ritmu Roots festival
Morsrot's EP SEPTICEMIA out now Morsrot's EP "Septicemia" marks a significant evolution for the young death metal outfit. Born from the creative minds of four musicians, aged 15 to 17, this sophomore release reflects a period of growth and exploration for the band. Penned during the summer of 2021, "Septicemia" showcases a departure from Morsrot's earlier sound. While still rooted in the raw energy of old school death metal, the EP embraces a more technical and somewhat progressive approach. This shift in style demonstrates the band's willingness to push boundaries and expand their musical horizons. Despite this evolution, traces of the band's primal origins remain evident throughout the EP. The spirit of OSDM (old school death metal) still pulses strongly within the tracks, serving as a reminder of Morsrot's humble beginnings. "Septicemia" stands as a testament to Morsrot's journey as a young band finding their voice in the metal scene. With each track, they boldly carve out their place, proving themselves as a force to be reckoned with. - Philharmonic Founder Remembered, Dark Malta Schedule, Rock the South 11, Anecdotes Of Maltese Early Jazz
Passing of Joseph Sammut: Composer and Founder of Malta Philharmonic Orchestra Joseph Sammut, the esteemed composer credited with founding the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, has passed away. Aged 97, he was among the nation's foremost orchestra conductors in the post-war era, and he breathed his last at Mater Dei hospital on Wednesday. In one of his final artistic endeavors in 2020, amidst the peak of the pandemic, Sammut unveiled his composition "Adagio-Remembrance," a poignant piece dedicated to the memory of the countless lives lost. Born in Valletta in 1926, he commenced his musical education under the tutelage of his father, Vincenzo Sammut, a bassoonist at the Royal Opera House and a cellist with the Orchestra of the Commander in Chief of the Royal Navy. Following in his father’s footsteps, Sammut initially joined the orchestra as a bassoonist in 1942. However, the majority of his career was devoted to conducting and composing. For 16 years, he served as the conductor of the Orchestra of the Commander in Chief of the Royal Navy, until its disbandment in 1968 following the country's independence. Subsequently, he established the Manoel Theatre Orchestra, where he held the position of chief conductor until 1993. This orchestra later evolved into the National Symphony Orchestra and ultimately the esteemed Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1970 to 2006, Sammut served as the musical director of the Societa' Filarmonica La Vallette, and in 1970, he conducted the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra in Japan. His illustrious career also encompassed notable performances such as conducting the inaugural concert at the Aurora Opera House in Gozo in 1976, followed by the premiere opera performance in Gozo, "Madame Butterfly," in 1977. In 2023, Sammut was actively involved in and conducted the Foundation Day Concert with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Despite residing at the care home Casa Antonia in his later years and battling illness, those close to him attested that he continued to immerse himself in music, both listening and composing, until his final days. Sincere condolences to the Sammut family. - USHERING THE DARKNESS – DARK MALTA FESTIVAL 2024
From its humble beginnings in 2018, Dark Malta Festival continues to grow and flourish beyond expectation, drawing to the island international acts and many festival goers who have added this yearly event to their calendar. Malta’s only Gothic/Industrial/Metal Festival was born after DJ Hades and Aleera De Lune decided to organize a Gothic Festival. It started out with a one-day event in 2018 with Diary of Dreams and Gothminister as headliners. The response was good and 2019 the festival grew into a two day event with And One and Lord of the Lost as headliners and an array of good bands and artists performing. Covid hit and we had to wait until 2022 for the third edition. This was the first edition held at Gianpula Village Main Room. Three days with an incredible line up including Covenant, Moonspell, Combichrist and much more. 2023 was the biggest edition yet with And One, Deathstars, Project Pitchfork and many other acts and DJ’s keeping the crowd jumping form afternoon till the early hours of the morning. The weather was clement, and a 2-day pool party was also introduced. One must mention that apart of bringing foreign acts to Malta, this event serves also as an opportunity for local bands and talent to be introduced to an international crowd. 2024 – The 5th Anniversary Dark Malta Festival will be back with a bang between 19th and 21st April 2024, at the Gianpula Village Main Room for its 5th Anniversary. - A Lily 'Saru l-Qamar' - press release
James Vella returns as his musical alias A Lily with the new album ‘Saru l-Qamar’ - setting archival Maltese home recordings to new music for an album of trademark nostalgic quasi-ambiance. Phantom Limb / Kewn Records | PHNTM041 | LP, Digital | April 5th 2024 “Thanks to the Maltese language's old Arabic roots and Vella's ambient inclinations, the music [on Saru I-Oamar] evokes a crossroads between Saint Abdullah's grandiose, industrialised compositions of Shia orations and the cosy nostalgia of Ernest Hood's suburban neighbourhood field recordings.” - The Wire “Vella brings an impressionist response to his sources, lifting them into the evocative space of memory and dream on clouds of glowing hardware synthesis. Holding their mystery and humanity.” - The Quietus From the 60’s until the modern era, it was common for Maltese families to receive reel tapes from relatives abroad. Maltese emigrés resettled in Australia, the UK, Canada etc. would record their news onto cassette - often in the form of għana, traditional Maltese song - and mail the tapes back home. Amazingly, through the superlative archival work of Malta’s nonprofit heritage foundation Magna Żmien, many of these tapes still exist. A Lily (Phantom Limb boss and musician James Vella) - who is Maltese - was allowed access to Magna Żmien’s collection and in late 2022 began creating new musical works responding to these recordings. These works take up the oneiric bliss of new album Saru l-Qamar [Eng: They Became The Moon], his first release on his own label, and released in Malta under Kewn Records. Arranged alongside hardware synthesis and “minimal DAW intervention”, the recordings on Saru l-Qamar take on ghostly, spiritual new qualities. Simple storytelling and news-sharing (“there was a burglar in the house yesterday”, “I can’t tell you how much I miss Malta”, “do your utmost to spend all your money at the feast”) become plaintive and evocative elegies for friends and family lost to time. “This is the meaning of the album title,” Vella writes. “Though these people have left us, they can never be truly forgotten, as without them we would not be here. They become part of the fabric of our lives, remaining forever and inexorably within the makeup of every subsequent generation. They have become the moon - always present, but always out of reach.” James Vella’s A Lily project was most recently seen with twin releases Sleep Through the Storm and Nocturne Thunder, released on The Ransom Note’s Bytes label in 2020 and 2022 respectively. These two releases and Saru l-Qamar see Vella turn to synthesis and electronic instrumentation following his more band-orientated previous album of 2018. Vella is also a founding member of acclaimed act yndi halda, and has run the Phantom Limb label since its inception in 2017, releasing a range of eclectic records by Loraine James, Kevin Richard Martin (The Bug), Ami Dang, and more. ‘Saru l-Qamar’ Tracklist: 1. Żeżina Ddoqq is-Sħab 2. Kemm Nixtieq Li Qed 3. Flimkien Ngħaddu Mill-Bieb 4. Ħajti Kollha, Qalbi 5. Nitolbu Lil Dawk Li Lejlu 6. Tħallinix 7. Erba' Aħwa 8. Sirna l-Qamar 9. Issa, Kuljum, Għal Dejjem Żgħażagħ Saru l-Qamar is available now on limited coloured vinyl, digital and streaming platforms. Order a physical copy from Bandcamp HERE. Established in 2017, Kewn Records, led by Nick Morales with mentorship from James Vella (of Phantom Limb), fills a void in Malta's music scene. With a goal of elevating local talent professionally, the label, assisted by coordinator Nicholas Bonello, has since released alternative music from the likes of BILA, The Areola Treat, Krishna, Niket and more. With 6 albums, 8 EPs, and 12 singles, Kewn Records acts as a one-stop shop for musicians, amplifying Malta's musical impact globally. This project is supported by Arts Council Malta
