- Dark Malta announces new headliner / Halcyon debuts on stage / Rock The South statement
Official Announcement by Dark Malta organisation on Friday 18th March: Unfortunately in the Last Days we had been informed by the Blutengel Management that their show at Dark Malta Festival 2023 is going to be cancelled for Medical Reasons. With Only 5 Weekends to Go, this couple of Days had been a race against time to find another Headliner for Saturday. While the Dark Malta crew wishes a speedy recovery to the Band Member, we are sure that the band that is replacing Blutengel, for the Saturday Headline Spot will rock Dark Malta Festival ... This was quickly followed by another post announcing the new headliners for Saturday 22nd April: This 2 days were a race against time, but now We Are Very Happy to Announce AND ONE as the Headliners for Saturday 22nd April at Dark Malta Festival 2023 ... A Big Thanks and Lots of Gratitude goes to AND ONE and Kai for making this possible in such short notice ... Are you ready for a Military Fashion Show? Friday 18th march witnessed the debut live appearance of yet another band, a trio, who are still in their early youths. Halcyon is formed by Zain Gauci (Saint Vermin, Chaotic Remains) on guitar and vocals, Alexander James (Damaged & Co.) on bass and vocals and Venezuelan, Victor Hugo Rivera Barreiro on drums. Originally their debut was supposed to happen some weeks ago in Valletta with the superb lighted city as a backdrop, but due to weather conditions it was postponed. Maybe this accident was in a way a blessing because the sheer brutality they showed on stage at The Garage left the crowd want more, and if there weren’t any bands following the audience would have got more. But Halcyon’s debut marked also the commencement of Club Murder’s Double Murder occasion (with A Broken Design and Club Murder on Friday’s bill and Luciferi Regnum, Morsrot, Lady lizard and a different set by Club Murder on Saturday) Halcyon project themselves as technical death metal, but the influence of the old school establishment is highly visible, (in fact they performed covers of songs by Death and Sepultura). What is sure about this band is the sense of humour Zain possesses. Definitely a band to look out for and after this performance I’m sure many are eagerly awaiting their debut recordings, hopefully in a very near future. Influenced by classica Doom/Death metal bands of the 90's their sound is based on melancholy, a desperate and devoted attempt to establish a sound that cries for the deepest, most arcane and saddest feelings in humans. In 2004 the band released its debut demo 'In Bitterness Of Our Souls'. The demo is currently sold out after selling all 1000 copies issued. Niket's show at RTS, in fact is the band's stage debut. In a post on his Facebook page David expressed: " It's been nearly 4 years since I performed Live with Loathe, unfortunately we're going thru a neverending Hiatus at the moment but we ain't gone yet expect some Good news soon... Meanwhile a few years ago a very extraordinary and wonderful Individual contacted me telling me he had this Dream he wanted to fulfill and wanted me to do vocals... He told me something that I'll never forget and brought tears to my eyes plus flattery and appreciation - He said till now you are the most Painful and Desperate Voice I have ever heard in the Maltese Scene and that's why I want you in this... With this I felt that all I ever wanted to achieve as a vocalist with Loathe was reached thus becoming the Birth of Niket 🖤 So finally after our Debut EP self titled Niket we're performing for the first time Live at Rock The South Malta and since were beginners (LOL!) were playing a bit early in the afternoon so it would be lovely to see a lot of you Guys and Girls catch us Live and Enjoy our Show. Juan Xerri to fill for Mark Spiteri on vocal duties at The Garage this weekend At noon on Friday 14th April the following statement was released by Lord Adder on the band's page on Facebook: "Earlier this week, our frontman and bassist - Mark (Crusher) was hit with a really mean throat allergy which had a severe (temporary) effect on his voice making him unable to reach certain notes. Given that the concert was to happen in a few days' time, there was no way we would cancel this gig after months of preparation from both us and Soul. At the same time, though, we truly value your experience more than anything, and anyone who's been following us through the years can (hopefully) vouch for that. In comes Juan Xerri, most of you may know him either from previous guest appearances with us or as the frontman of great bands such as Animamortua and previously Relicuia. Yesterday's rehearsal was great and we look forward to sharing with you the final result tomorrow. Join us in welcoming Juan as part of The Gut's lineup!" Whilst all of us from Melodija.eu yearn a speedy recovery to Mark, we are sure that Juan shall rise to the occasion and deliver, as he always did. The Gut is happening on Saturday 15th April at The Garage
- Night(s) of debuts/Aaron comes out of hibernation/Dark Malta latest/Ġenn new single out
Night(s) of debuts Last weekend The Garage witnessed three debuts (not counting the Hawaiian attire The Drowning Sorrow came out on stage in). They were part of the lineup making up Realm Of The Forgotten with Sahhar and Weeping Silence. Attire apart, The Drowning Sorrow delivered one hell of a set, followed by an excellent performance by Sahhar. But as the title of this piece suggests, let's take a look at the debuts we had during this weekend. The first was delivered by Weeping Silence.... The band's set was made up of new songs (set list in photo) that should see the light of day physically by the end of 2023, unleashing a 16 minute prog metal epic titled "The Legend Of Matteo Falzon" (debuted live for the first time). It tells the story/legend of a Maltese sorcerer named Matteo Falzon, who was judged by the Inquisition. He managed to escape, some even saying he vanished into thin air in front of the Inquisitor. He fled to Sicily, where he instructed a slave to kill him and cut his body into pieces, burying them so that he would be able to reincarnate later on. The servant obeyed but was caught by the Inquisition and revealed the place he had buried the sorcerer after he was tortured. When they opened the tomb, legend goes that the body and bones had started reuniting, so they burned them immediately, destroying the magical powers off completely. As the remaining songs in the band's set list shows, the new songs have the Maltese folklore and legends as their topic. But we were not done of debuts for the weekend..... Saturday evening saw the debut gig of newcomers 'Soul' a band formed by teens, playing music their parents used to listen to in rock bars in Paceville in the 90's. Soul has been together for not more than four months, although the energy they showed on Saturday one would think they have been playing together for years. They also debuted an original song called Dirt, a song written in the same vein as the covers they performed on the night. Soul supported veteran band Lord Adder who organised the event titled The Gut (a Lord adder song about past life in Strait Street, and which was given a new aspect some days ago when the band released it with Maltese lyrics. As we mentioned last week, Lord Adder's frontman Mark Spiteri was unable to sing due to a mean throat allergy. As was also mentioned Juan Xerri filled in for Mark on vocals duties, with Mark playing bass and (sometimes) backing vocals. We all know the capabilities of Juan, but Saturday he exceeded all expectations with a brilliant performance which truly showed the professionalism of Animamortua's singer. Aaron comes out of hibernation A short post by guitarist/bassist Aaron Dimech on his Facebook page and a music video on Youtube announced his 'retirement' is over. As Aaron put it himself: "I've been absent from the music scene for quite some time, as the most of you are aware. I quit performing music altogether since I was feeling a little burnt out. Since then, I have avoided playing an instrument and averting any musical activities in favour of concentrating on other things. However, I've been attempting to get back to it lately by beginning to just play in private, but for some reason it is challenging for me to stand up again. So, I bought a new 8 string (an Ibanez RG8-WH). Nothing pricey or extravagant. Just something to get me motivated to start writing again. So I wrote this piece of music and I wanted to share with all of you." 'Cordyceps' was inspired by 'The Last of Us', a videogame & now also a television series and the video can be seen here. Dark Malta latest news Dark Malta is set to lift up its curtains on Friday afternoon. This honour falls on locals Damaged & Co. who are part of a lineup made up of another twenty three acts. Our latest news comes from the other two locals on the bill. Ancient Remains announced earlier this week that their show is set to be enhanced: "For this special live show we will be joined by 10PAH who will be travelling to Malta to accompany the set with a live stage performance art and prose. Additionally we are pleased to announce that the visual artist Damian Daly, who will also be present, has prepared a 40 minute projection to compliment the live set. Below you can read comments on Mr Dalys work. Ethereal, fractured, collage like Drawings, made up of a network of delicate and intricate lines and marks, a mix of fluid and subconscious versus detailed deliberate and disjointed. Sometimes uncomfortable and sometimes forming a sublime, pleasurable order. People as constructs, pieced together by inner or outside forces or agencies. Complex emotional and psychic states battle and coexist within a kind of meta/physical body or meta body. Imagery and inspiration taken from anywhere and everywhere, built around personal or projected unconscious desires, deliberate intentions and exploratory psychic excavations. Marvel meets Renaissance. Fractured sensuality. Damian Daly's work draws from the fashion and symbolism of various cultures, yet he slashes them up and presents them in fractured, broken poses like great fleshy cyborgs, beautiful and incomplete". Ancient Remains hit the stage on Sunday 15.30, followed by Xitan at 16.30, who announced that he'll be accompanied on stage by Veronique Meeuwsen (stage name La Vero) as guest. Ġenn new single out As befitting a band who take their name from the Maltese word for frenzy, ĠENN thrive amongst chaos. It's this unique outlook and tight-knit gang mentality that make ĠENN such a thrilling proposition musically, as evidenced on Liminal EP released March 2021. A Reprise (That Girl) - 18 April Release Now the band have just released a new single tilted 'A Reprise (That Girl)' on social media platforms. Video can be seen here.
- Maleth Crucis & Atomic Flame debuts/Vince Farrugia passes away/Beer Fest dates
Maleth Crucis finalising debut Maleth Crucis have announced that work on their debut EP is well under way and the band has got five out of six songs ready, while also working on the artwork. Maleth Crucis (death metal) was formed in June 2020 by Carlo Calamatta (song writer & guitarist) and Michael Grech Sammut (vocals). Beesqueeze is a Maltese high-power indie pop rock trio, consisting of Kriz Haze (guitar, synth and vox) & Chris Lee (drums, vox, guitar and fx) & Erick Saliba (bass) who joined the band later - three individuals full of energy! Beesqueeze describe their music as 'Alterdelic' (alternative / psychedelic) rock, and rightly so, as their sound is a pumpy and vibrant combination of alternative rock mixed with psychedelic pop influenced by acts such as The Strokes, MGMT, Tame Impala, Gorillaz, Arcade Fire and The Pixies. Their first EP 'Crowd Control' was released in 2017 and showed the band's take on finding a crispy sound. In 2020 recording sessions for their first album started in their tiny home studio. The band is experimenting with a variety of electronic sounds, beats and rhythms on these tracks, whilst maintaining a warm rawness to it. In 2020 they've released 3 tracks all accompanied with a music video shot, directed and edited by the band itself. The Bees are finishing the last few songs to be released with Kewn Records later this year! Beesqueeze is an explosive live band worth watching and being part of their energetic shows!" Devil’s Breath in collaboration with Russian producer Massiath has had a song included in Dark Ambient Volume 25 compilation released by Sombre Soniks on bandcamp. The band work in partnership with Massiath on a label entitled Music Analysis Discussions Records. The third edition of Muzika Muzika takes place this coming weekend commencing on Thursday 23rd till the 25th March at the MFCC Ta’ Qali. The twenty songs participating, celebrates, as does the festival, the Maltese song in its native language. Although this is the third edition, the 'Malta Song Festival' knows a humble beginning when a small group, Żgħażagħ Ħaddiema Nsara (ŻĦN) organized the first music festival on the island in 1960. The 'Festival Internazzjonali tal-Kanzunetta Maltija’ was officially initiated in 1981, with the idea that Maltese music, together with local singers, authors and composers, would reach international recognition. Unfortunately, it was abruptly stopped in 2002 after twenty years, to the astonishment of festival fans and musicians. After eleven years this festival returned in 2013, but did not continue after that year, except once in July 2016 under the name of 'The Song of the People - Festival of the Maltese Song'. In 2021, the festival returned with a bang, under the umbrella of Festivals Malta, with the new name of 'Mużika Mużika - Festival Kanzunetta Maltija' and is finally being given the prestige it so deserves. - Zero Infinity launched / Gozitan band info / Ghanja tal-Poplu finalists / News In Brief...
Kill The Action pre-saved single now available Kill The Action is an electronic rock band, famous for their energetic live shows. While the band is in full preparation for their EP launch in the coming weeks, the band released a new single (previously on pre-save) titled 'Zero Infinity' which can be viewed here. New face on the three hills Unfortunately today's debut EP launch of this Gozitan band had to be postponed due to bad weather and whilst we wait for a new date here's some information about Krejon: Mario and Manuel, brothers and guitarists, are the original members and founders of the band. They drew inspiration from instrumental guitar music and embarked on a journey of writing instrumental pieces and songs together. As their repertoire grew, Christopher became a valuable addition to the band, initially as a percussionist and later as the drummer. Subsequently, Alan joined the group, filling the role of the bassist. Thus, in mid-2021, the band solidified into a four-piece ensemble. Their inaugural performance took place in December of the same year. Following a series of successful gigs, the band contemplated diversifying their sound by incorporating additional instruments. Several months later, keyboardist Steve joined Krejon, completing the lineup. The Travellers sings about 'is-Sindikajr Malti' The Travellers have unveiled their upcoming single, "Jum Ġdid," along with its accompanying music video. This fresh and uplifting track is featured on their latest album, "Inżul u Tlajja'," and sheds light on the Sindikajr Malti, a prevalent presence in Malta known for their incessant curiosity. In every neighborhood, there's that one nosy neighbor who possesses an uncanny knowledge of everyone's lives. They lurk in the shadows, their eyes prying, eagerly seeking to uncover every detail. This song encapsulates the essence of these inquisitive individuals, who go to great lengths to master their snooping skills, considering it an art form, and perhaps even believing they are indispensable to their community.
